Nate is so freaking underrated....he's a drummers dream! Solid and locked so damn deep in the pocket it's incredible. Those talking crap have no clue. He is dead on, comes up with original parts and his tone is exactly what is needed..the man serves the song.
His parallel distortion pedal made by ashdown is absolutely amazing and shows how much he knows about what makes a rock bass tone work. Some of the weirdest basslines in rock at times, but it's totally melodic and fluid. He's great
I’ve read that comment so many times and I think most people enjoy the process as opposed to the history lesson. I suppose there’s room for both, but maybe the process should overshadow the history.
The most difficult and thankless job is that of a bass player. They're bridging the gap between the drums and the guitars and this guy really does a good job
It's nice to hear/see Dave singing sober and without the exhaustion of a three hour show every once in a while. He has some amazing overtones in his voice that kind of get lost when he's all messed up. Oh and to me it seemed Nate didn't like the take but didn't want to bother the others with recording it again..:D
@@johnnynbk yeah back in the day it was bad. Not his playing just his presence on stage occasionally. Hyde Park to me is the best live performance ever recorded of theirs and he is hammerrrrrrrreeeddddd.
The whole band is awesome, I love that they are 3 guitar players, it’s such a rich sound, unique to foo fighters, Nate is my favorite bass player of all time, such tasty bass lines, he is responsible for foo fighters sound more than one might realize, I’ve recorded many foo fighters songs myself playing all instruments, and the hardest to emulate is Nate’s bass parts, his sense of melodic playing is incredible. Miss you Taylor ❤
pretty sure he's vaping LOL....I know it's a documentary but they wouldn't be smoking something illegal unless that's what the documentary was about haha!!
in 1998 dave grohl and pat smear came to our music shop in fowler, indiana and they were the most disrespectful customers we ever had, they made fun of our selection of electric guitars and called Ritchie Blackmore a very very bad word.
would be cool if the foo fighters played in different tunings and went back to having a little more balls. All their songs now have exactly the same sound which is standard and major same chords same structure. It's hard to evolve and change up when you use the same ingredients and approach to every single song. Love the first record 1995, it's amazing.
Its the modern technique of recording. The live part is called a 'session,' where they record the song as it would probably be played live. Then they go back and overdub the instruments to get the best possible performance. This technique also allows lots of harmony guitars and miscellaneous instruments, giving a lot more freedom to make the song exactly how you want it without having to have a million people in the studio at the same time.
The full session is usually to lock down the drums, and it's *much* easier for the drummer to give a good performance if he can play with the rest of the band. They'll then keep the drums from that session, and layer in the individual performances from everyone else.
Eric Lopez it a way its for fun as well, cuz in order the to get a great performance out of the drummer he needs to feel the energy of jamming with the band. and jamming with the band is fun.
I love the way Taylor played with the same intensity in the studio as on the stage. Greatly missed. And I didn't even know him
Love Taylor and respect the sentiment in what you’re saying, but he definitely turned the intensity up a notch or 2 live. Dude was a MACHINE
Nate is so freaking underrated....he's a drummers dream! Solid and locked so damn deep in the pocket it's incredible. Those talking crap have no clue. He is dead on, comes up with original parts and his tone is exactly what is needed..the man serves the song.
Easy white knight lol, he ain't Pino Palladino. Nate's solid, that's it.
drumtravelfun, he's a bit more than solid.
His parallel distortion pedal made by ashdown is absolutely amazing and shows how much he knows about what makes a rock bass tone work.
Some of the weirdest basslines in rock at times, but it's totally melodic and fluid. He's great
You are alright man
i know im hella late to the party but I totally agree. I don't understand why bassist, especially bass UA-camrs, do not talk about nates playing
I think that Pat Smear must be one of the coolest rocker out there!! Always smiling : )))
Dude he really is always smiling. What a national treasure that guy is.
Dude is enjoying life like no one else does.
Butch - "It's cool right?"
Nate - "k"

Seeing how dave does vocals is great
Yeah. I always assumed he did it while he was on the toilet. Not standing in front of a mic.
That half-step silent stop is in almost every foo fighter song i ever heard.
Nate is one of the greatest bass players around. Love him.
I wanted Sonic Highways to be a lot more of this and a lot less of the interviews. These vids are great.
I’ve read that comment so many times and I think most people enjoy the process as opposed to the history lesson. I suppose there’s room for both, but maybe the process should overshadow the history.
always a big talker Nate, hahaha
The most difficult and thankless job is that of a bass player. They're bridging the gap between the drums and the guitars and this guy really does a good job
Butch: It's cool Right ?!? ......... Nate: Ok 😅

3:20 to 3:50 shows why Taylor is so special. RIP legend
I could watch this documentary a thousand times and still see or hear something new. By far my favorite album by them. ❤
Makes me smile to see what an outstanding rock vocalist Dave Grohl has become. Seems a long way from just BV's in Nirvana Unplugged.

@@Fire_Marshall_Bill he didn’t look hammered now he was probably just buzzed
Was that singing. He was just " marking" the vocals
You’re an idiot
Easily one of my favorite tracks from Sonic Highways. Great video.
R.I.P Taylor. What a legend
Butch: It sounds awesome man!
Dave: thanks.. (he's gonna make me do it a thousand times) 😅
11:35
One of my favorite songs on the album
The ones saying bullshit about Nate, watch Back and Forth.
God damn, I want Pat's white SG!!
I know right? He's been using that thing since 1995 and its killer
Dave's voice so melodic... like salve on my ears😁🥰🥰🥰

I love this song...
That instrumental had me tears

I keep repeating that part again and again and again only god knows how many times I have listened to that part

My favorite band!
6:33 not everyone can play guitar while flipping everyone else off
Love Taylor hawkins ❤ RIP
Hermosoooooo !!!
El proceso de creación musical es magnífico !!
Foto fighters es mi grupo favorito !!!! Woooooo hell yeahh !!
Taylor Hawkins got more teeth than a dog fight .. but great drummer no doubt..
It’s like watching Skeletor play the drums
When they finished playing the song together, I could only think when Anchorman finishes “Afternoon Delight”
I can watch these guys play all day, and have!
This is so interesting to watch
1:04 that arrangement Chris does is beautiful. Would have been nice to have it a couple times
interviewer: so what is the process of creating music like?
band: 6:21
I love how you can hear how hard Taylor is playing when they isolated his track
9:23 I did not know that Oz from American Pie played the sax. Guess he gave up lacrosse to pursue his dreams in music.
Song changed my life.
Só "My hero" supera essa música... Quanto mais ouço "In the clear" melhor ela fica!
10:40 dude, that's fucking awesome. As I singer myself, I wish I sounded this good pre processing! Holy shit! That's fucking hard!
Taylor Hawkins looks like Tom Petty.
Just the Necronomicon chilling on the floor. No big deal.
Sounds so good!
no one really wants to bro fist that assistant dude... :(
archi baldikowski he's an engineer, one of the best in the biz, calling him an assistant dude is beyond offensive.
was just kidding, dont know the guy. ;)

They all look like brothers

9:46 lololo New Orleans Misfits
As in the beyond-legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band...
6:49 Pat is too cool lol
Nate, i think we need to talk about your flair
The guitars isolated from rest of track sound so amazing. Great Marshall sound to my ears but Im sure mix of amps
Whats the drum fill Hawkins puts at the count of 3, at the very beginning? It's very familiar... Is that why Dave laughs? (RIP Taylor)
6:48 Pat Moment
so pissed I missed the surprise show
Rip Taylor
I hear wings,, JET.....
This song sounds exactly like the middle 8 from Coma by American HiFi

11:39 lol it reminds me something...
12:15 Fuck yea! All the face on the antipop. What can go wrong?
Poor Nate looks so bored. Shame Uncle Dave told him to stick to the root notes all the time.
At first recorded a demo, then rewrote each instrument?? or just then separately still parts added?
They recorded a demo of the song at first and kept the drums from that. Then they redid all the other tracks.
Who is the guy sitting with Butch? The guy was trying to give Chris a fist pump and Chris left him hanging until he tapped him.
he's their audio engineer, don't know his name though
I found out. His name is James Brown.
Cool, thanks :)
He looks like h3h3
who`s the guy with the SLINT t-shirt?
I don't know his real role name, and I hate to call him such but, who exactly is Butch Vig's 'assistant'?
Chris Norris James Brown he’s worked with the foo’s for a while in studio 606 and places like that

I agree. The 1st, colour and the Shape and wasting light are all you need.
When does he make the vocal melody?
he wrote the lyrics at the end of the recording process.
I wonder how much of the live track is used for everyone minus the drums. I'm thinking that they're just doubling guitar tracks who knows
Seems all was recut but the drums.

why they always record live band band first then record individually ?

well, i got it. so they make the record fun and no need feel the presure when record it individualy

Kazoo 😆😆
Kinda sounds 80'ish
were they using pro tools to record this album?not totally analog?
dharutrhmj Nope, totally analog.
+Fernando Callo probably some digital mastering at the final stages tho.
+Skunky Vibes probably only volumes and location of sound
Original
why are they using headphones what are they listening to?
Metronome, eachother, themselves. All of that and the news.
+rootsroots25 To hear the mix as they are playing.
+Roots Studio you call yourself "Roots Studio" and you don't know about monitoring?
Why are they holding those instruments?
Brilliant!
