Panoramic head tutorial (Nodal Ninja or any): 360 photos with DSLR or any camera for virtual tours

  • Virtual tours are HOT! Stand out from the competition by taking very high quality 360 photos -- with almost any camera! The secret is to use a panoramic head -- a tool previously reserved for experts and specialists. But in this panoramic head tutorial, I will show the complete process -- everything you need to know to start using a pano head for 360 photos, from shooting through stitching. (In the tutorial, I used the Nodal Ninja 3, but the techniques I showed can be used for any multi-row pano head).
    I will discuss:
    - 6 advantages of using a DSLR / panohead for 360 photos instead of a 360 camera
    - How to setup the panoramic head
    - What kinds of camera and lens combinations work best for 360 photos
    - What kinds of settings to use
    - What is the no parallax point (NPP or "nodal point") to minimize stitching errors.
    - A simple but effective way for finding the nodal point -- yes you can do it even with a fisheye lens
    - How to shoot the spherical panorama
    - How to stitch the panorama
    Here are sample photos, comparing 360 photos with a panoramic head vs. popular 360 cameras:

    Thank you for this! I am just getting started with DSLR panorama photography, and this video is the best I have found out of dozens that I have watched so far. Thanks to your information and presentation, even my first shots are coming out great. There were just a few issues with my learning curve in PTGui, but even for that, having well-shot photos makes a huge difference.

    So funny. I watched that video in 2018. I was unsure if I should buy a 360 camera, but then stumbled upon this video. So I bought a pano-head and a good fisheye for the DSLR I already had.
    Now 2020, I still watch your videos. And no actual consumer 360 cam produces as sharp and detail-richt spheres as my setup. Sure, it's tedious to carry around a DSLR setup, and the workflow is a pain in the ass. But the quality is still unbeatable.

    Hello Mic! First, congratulations, all of your videos are awesome! and I bough a Xiaomi Mijia 360 because of you and I'm vaery happy :) I have a question, do you think I'll have good results using a panoramic head like Nodal Ninja with a 17-40mm F4 lens with a 6D Full Frame? or I need to buy a 8mm fisheye lens?

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Adriano! And thank you very much for buying the xiaomi! About the 17-40L, yes you can take a panoramic shot with it, although I don't know how many shots it will take. At 24mm, it takes around 22 shots. I also don't know if Nodal Ninja 3 will fit. Here's how you can check: measure the distance from the tripod hole to the front of the lens. If the distance is 12cm or less, then you can use nodal ninja 3. If not, then you need Nodal Ninja 6 (up to 16cm) or M series (up to 20cm). If you want to buy a fisheye lens, the 8-15 is what the pros use :D

    Thanks for this very good video. One question still: how do you chose the number of frames. Is there a calculation you need to do? For example you want 360 degrees with 50mm full frame, how many shot and how many increment for the inckinaison?
    Do you need to change nodal point for every lens?

    Dude! This is the best 360 video out there. I have watched a bunch. Seriously! Great job! Its just the right length. You produced solid information throughout the whole thing. (the beginning could be tighter) A seriously amazing job. When I was watching the opening I thought you were trying to sell me a three week course by listing the objectives. Then you cut to advertising. The only reason I stuck around was because the Sigma Lense content was intriguing and I was folding my clothes.Fortunately I was still around for the real information. Move that break somewhere more annoying in the middle of something. For retention. I am not complaining about the advertising. I have no problem watching an ad to the end so you get paid for your knowledge. So back at you!. This is the whole thing.

    Hi Great videos you make. I just wanted to come back to this specific video to ask this since you're using the DSLR & the Fisheye: I can see that as you rotate/pan the camera you're take 6 horizontal shots (instead of the usual 4 horizontal, which would be at 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees). Could you please explain:
    1-How do you assess how many horizontal shots you should capture?
    2-How do you determine, by how many degrees you should rotate the Nodal Ninja horizontally, as you're taking the 6 horizontal shots?
    3-Is the choice of Fisheye's Focal Length (example, 12 mm Wide vs 15mm Wide) the reason why you choose to take 6 instead of the typical 4 horizontal shots?
    I know I asked too many questions... but I got to say THANK YOU, as you're the most informative educator concerning these virtual tours sir!!

      @@360vroomers That is awesom and I am looking forward to your book. In the meanwhile, may I ask you one question, since I want to start shooting 360 virtual tours and need to buy a Fisheye now:
      I shoot in M/43 format (Panasonic/Oly cameras) which is crop sensor. I noticed the 8mm Samyang lens you're using in the video is equivalent to 12mm focal length of Full Frame sensor (35mm Equivalent).
      1-I am wondering if picking up a Fisheye that say has a focal length of 16mm as opposed to 12mm (Full Frame equivalent), would put you at a disadvantage?
      2- What MFT Fisheye (Focal length) mm, would you recommend?

    Hello Mic. Thanks for this. Just few questions. Will my Sony a7ii with 28-70mm lens fit on the ninja nodal mark ii? And the second question is how do I take photos with just a normal kit lens? 5 shots at 0 degree angle? 5 shots at 35 degree angle? I know I will have to take a lot of shots because I won't be using fish eye lens but it's okay as long I get high qulity result. Thanks

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  5 років тому

      hi Janus. No you'll need a nodal ninja 6 for a 28-70 lens. You can use a kit lens but it will take many shots. Basically, you need 25 to 50% overlap. So just move until there is around 25 to 50% overlap, then move it again, etc.

    I have a question. With that same set up, would it have been possible to just shoot 4 horizontal (perhaps tilted slightly downwards), plus one zenith shot?
    I just got my multirow pano head, but in a big dilemma to go for a APSC Sony A6000 or a full frame.
    The A6000 seems to be the lowest price camera with all the features I require (AEB, remote shutter). Problem is the lack of native E-mount lenses that will provide a cropped fisheye (4shots). Was thinking of just getting a Samyang 8mm instead, and take 4 horizontal, with just 1 additional zenith.
    By going for a full frame camera, it solves this problem... Although, the price is a bit strep for me at the moment.

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  6 років тому

      Hi Emilio. Yes, if you use a circular fisheye or cropped circular fisheye, you can get a fully spherical photo with 4 shots and 1 nadir shot to patch the nadir if you want. You can get Samyang 7.5 with shaved hood and converted to E-mount (Nodal Ninja sells a conversion kit), or Sigma 8mm. You can see samples of both lenses here: 360rumors.com/360-camera-comparison-tool#dslr

    Hello again, I have a really old (about 22 years old) pano head that I bought to use with Quicktime VR and had an old stitching program from that era as well (which of course wont load on newer computers) So, I am inspired to use the pano head again (not so sophisticated as the Ninja, as it does not have detents it just has degree marks ( 0 to 360) which should work... My question is you are using an 8mm fisheye, I have a Canon xsi 12mp DSLR, is there a reason you pick that lens? I started shooting at an office today for a virtual tour when my Yi 360 decided to stop functioning! UG! So, I would like to try my hand at taking 360 like I did in the old days (sort of), and I will be using a new stitching program though. Any suggestion for the fisheye I should use. When shooting in the old days I shot 18 images for one rotation, I see you get away with 6 because of the fish eye.

      The best setting for HDR depends on the camera and the ambient light. A good starting point is 3 shots +/- 2EV . You can adjust that depending on the dynamic range of the room, and your camera's own dynamic range. In post processing, you need a good HDR software. The one I use is photomatix. i'll post a sample

      More expensive rotators can be adjusted so that you can change the number of click stops without having to dismantle the rotator.

    Mr. 360, I am setting up for pano with a DSLR and I do have a choice of lenses. Primary purpose is landscapes. You mention to go wider and you demo a fisheye. I thought that too wide, say less than 35mm would show a lot of distortion. I was wondering whether 35mm or 50mm would be better.
    Please explain.
    I haven't watched your nodal point discussion yet. But, I do have the Induro 5 way panhead and all I'm missing is nodal point technique.

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  5 років тому

      Hi Michael. Great questions. First, the distortion on fisheye has no effect on shooting 360. The distortion is negated during the stitching process.
      Yes you can use 35, 50 or even telephoto. The longer the lens, the more detailed the shot will be, but the more shots you will need to take a 360 photo. On full frame, 35mm requires 62 shots. 50mm requires 128 shots. With more shots, there is greater chance for error.
      No you cannot use your induro panhead to take a spherical photo. The video explains what is nodal point and why you need a panoramic head.

    Hi, thank you for the video. It was very helpful. I have now watched a few videos about how to create virtual tours. All the videos show taking pictures and then stitching them in special software to create panoramas. You mentioned ptgui and other software. However, my camera (Nikon D3300) has a feature called Easy Panoramas. So it let's you create the panorama IN CAMERA. So IN THAT CASE do I still need to take INDIVIDUAL pictures and then stitch them in special software or can I simply create my panoramas IN CAMERA and then skip the stitching step and start creating virtual tours with THOSE panoramas right away. • @360vroomers

      Hi Chris! For dynamic range, it's about the sensor. If you look at DXO, the top sensors are either Sony, or Nikon (most Nikon sensors are by Sony). For sharpness, Nikon and Canon tend to have the best lenses, but Samyang is also well regarded.
      If you consider both the dynamic range and sharpness, then in my opinion the most logical choice is Sony because they have excellent sensors and because of its short flange distance, sony e-mount can use lenses from almost any manufacturer, incuding Canon, Nikon and Samyang (both DSLR and mirrorless lenses).
      When you use adapted lenses, you usually don't have native compatibility so you lose things like autofocus and auto exposure but those aren't so important for panoramas anyway :) 360rumors.com/2018/07/dslr-vs-mirrorless-full-frame-vs-aps-c-best-camera-360-panoramic-photos.html

    I am going to buy a Panohead.
    My thoughts are between the R20 Google and the Panohead NN6.
    I must make virtual tour of rooms inside an office building for my firm, not to sell.
    Is the R20 goog enough? I would like it to be easy to shoot and the I have to stitch it later. I Understand that the R20 can not shoot downwards, but is this needed? Just to show an office building for clients?

    Could you do tutorial on the cheapest set-up to create photo spheres with a smartphone and tripod? - using google street view on android phone.

      Hi Edward. Yes the Samyang 8mm 2.8 II can work on a7 III. On FF, you need to shave off the hood. Then you'll be able to take 4 photos, single row, with better resolution than a circular fisheye. Alternatively, you can try the Samyang 8mm f/3.5 with removable hood. Hi Mike, I have a Nikon D7100 crop sensor camera body with a Nikon 10-24mm series G lens. Can I shoot high quality 360 degree pano photos with this equipment or do I have to purchase a 8mm fisheye lens? I am a relatively new real estate photographer and want to get into 360 pano photography. Which Nodal Ninja do you recommend? (to save money: what are your thoughts on alternative pano heads such as Neewer, Cowboy Studio, DSLRKIT 360° and Sunwayfoto 360?)

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  5 років тому

      Hey there Lenny. Re 10-24, it can work, as can almost any lens. In fact it will provide higher 360 resolution than the fisheye lens I used. But compared to a fisheye lens, it will take more shots, and the shooting pattern will be a bit more complicated. For that reason I recommend getting the Samyang 8mm 3.5 instead. amzn.to/2I6yXlg
      I recommend nodal ninja 3 (use the code 360r10 to get a 10% discount). you can get other brands. my first one was sunwayfoto. but after i tried nodal ninja, i found nodal ninja is more repeatable.

I took your advice and I purchased the Samyang SYHD8M-N 8mm f/3.5 HD Fisheye Fixed Lens with Removable Hood for Nikon online today and waiting for the delivery. I have been using my 10-24mm lens up to now. I have had some stitching problems with the 10-24, especially in empty homes. I guess the blank walls and the empty floors confuses PTGui. Hopefully, the 180-degree angle of view of the Samyang will resolve that problem. My new lens is the CS2 version. Will my camera recognize the new lens or do I have to set it up as a Non-CPU lens? Do I have to change any settings in PTGui to recognize this lens? Please answer these questions and any other advice will be appreciated.

For the number of shots, i dont know with those focal lengths but ensure 30 to 50% overlap between each shot. Have fun and welcome to the club 😉

      Thanks Mic for the advice. Please explain "that you need to find the nodal point for each focal length that you use" I would love to understand this a little more. • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  6 років тому

      Hi Michael. That means that if you use an 8-15 zoom and you use it at 8mm, it has a certain nodal point. If you use it at 15mm it has another nodal point. But if you use the same lens at the same focal length all the time, then you don't need to worry about it.
      Re output, do you mean that there are stitching errors? If that's the case, maybe you could try to be more precise with finding the nodal point.
      Also, are you rendering? The preview will look rough so you need to actually render it.
      Best regards,
      Mic

Yes there are stitching errors. And yes i do render the pictures. May be I have missed out on finding the Nodal point.
