Making the "MAKO" EDC Knife

- Designed this knife for a buddy who wanted a sleek knife that he could carry around and use for a variety of outdoor tasks. I used micarta scales that were slightly thicker than what I usually work with but they allowed me to make a very comfortable ergonomic handle. For the next one, I'll work on the blade shape to get a razor-sharp edge. Let me know what you think of the design!
Thanks for watching! My last video of the Outdoor Chef Knife blew up and is helping my channel get some traction. To all my new subscribers, I can't thank you enough for joining me on this knifemaking journey. Your support will help me take on bigger and crazier projects. I always appreciate any feedback on ways you think I can improve my knives AND my videos. I'll also answer any questions in the comment section below.

Welcome to my channel!
I am a weekend warrior knife maker diving headfirst into this amazing craft. Join me as I create one of a kind knives, restore old and forgotten tools, and share fast-paced build videos of my newly acquired skills. My goal is to entertain but also to educate and share the specific steps I take to create something. I'm by no means an expert and I don't use fancy grinders or heat treat ovens but, with enough time and effort, I think anyone can make awesome-functional knives.

Did you miss the music on this vid??
Not at all. Completely dig on the edit. Nice work my man
Ayy thanks my dude. I like videos without music but I thought the music would help cover up my loud breathing through the respirator 😂

Dude, I am beyond impressed, can't believe it took me so long to learn about this hobby of yours. Proud to call you my cousin!
Thanks cuz!
Good work.. just a little suggestion because as a knife maker and engineer I want the best possible results for everyone in the art of knife making... when you quench be sure to submerge your blade but keep it moving so your quench oil doesn’t create a “vapor lock” around your blade.. it allows a more even blade quench... but I like the knife design and your work.. well done
Thank you! I always appreciate feedback that will make my knives better. Sometimes I don't even notice what I'm doing while filming haha. Good to know what that's called as well. Thanks for watching!
I believe its also called the Leidenfrost effect?
@@emeraldplatypus9870 EXACTLY RIGHT!
Another great video dude!
Got motivated and going to the garage to work on my next knife!
Cheers!
Go get it bro!
Wow. Not a shape that appeals to me, but the workmanship is excellent. Great job. Love those handles!
Thanks bro! I'm actually working on another one soon with a different blade shape.
Noticed you quenched using oil. Will Parks 50 work for 80CrV2? Also, noticed that you used a forge and not an oven. Have you had good luck bring it up to the temp you mentioned then quenching? Thanks an beautiful work sir.
Yeah just using some canola, but I plan on getting some parks soon. I imagine the parks 50 will get you similar if not better results. I did have some issues with the forge in the beginning getting it to the temp I wanted but I fiddled with the air intakes and now I can get some consistent readings with my pyrometer. It's by no means a professional setup but it does work! Also, at the advice of one of my viewers, I am looking for a pipe that I can put in there to block the direct flame on the blade and heat it up a little more uniformly. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the information. Appreciate your time.
No problem! I appreciate ya
Nice work man, where did you get these sanding drums for your drill press ?
Found them on Amazon - Drum Sander Kit. Cheaper than getting a spindle sander!
@@99echo thanks !
I like the design but the blade is way to rough ...needs more and better sanding....
Completely agree, I was still working out my grit progressions before etching and stonewashing. Lesson learned
2 👍🏻’s up!
Outstanding! Be proud. You create!
Thank you!
Nice work love the work
Excellent work. Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed 🤙

Another perfect name. Love this video and the knife looks so sick!

I am looking for a new knife sharpener any suggestions I make knifes but can't seem to get them sharp.
What're you using now? I use my belt grinder then refine the edge with stones. A good cheap set is the king 65.
I am using my belt sander for the first and then going to a home made sharper just Sand paper on a block of wood then to a scrap piece of leather for the final age but it does not work very well
@@nathanodle8039 yeah the sandpaper is probably the culprit. I'd imagine that it dulls rather quickly. Grab the 1000/6000 whetstone. I bet that'll help. Make sure to get a burr along the entire length of the blade then flip. I check the edge by cutting paper throughout the process. Also, I found that too much time on the leather will convex the edge making it feel less sharp.
Thanks for all the advice it was a big help I will do that.
