    Just got around to watching, been a busy day. Thanks for the shout out, really appreciate that, glad to see it worked out. The whole heat treat before/after debate is a hard one, you either save belts & risk warps or visa versa. I decided a long time ago, to break the middle. I do bevels, but leave them thick(kinda best of both worlds). Hope all is well, thanks again, hope all is well, take it easy...

      How much would you sell a knife like this? You do great work, I'm surprised that you don't use a guide for grinding your bevels. They are super straight considering their done freehand. I too would not be ashamed to own this one, a knife that gets used will get scratched eventually. What steel are you using as I am a fan of carbon steel blades. I find that most stainless blades won't hold the edge of a good carbon blade.

      Hey Nick! I sure do... I just like it better, but I don't think there is a "more ideal" way. I feel the blade heats more evenly during the HT and warps are less likely. You must be careful when grinding though not to over heat post HT.

      You know I really haven't noticed much of a difference. I grind the same way in both cases (keeping the blade cool). I think using sharp belts is key.

      Red Beard is the first to say this, most every knife vid claims that grinding is very difficult after hardening. I am getting ready to try my hand at making a knife, along the lines of the Amazon tools vid.

    Get some small 1/4" nuts & bolts, use those to hold the sheath together while you shape it(good for making it the right size too), when you get everything 100%, go wash it out & then put it all together. I'll tell ya, you can do everything 100% & the kydex will still scratch, enough to make ya crazy...

    Really nice little knife! Any concern with heat treating the blade at full 3/16 thickness and it being completely hard throughout? IIRC I've heard other makers claim 1080 isnt a very 'deep' hardening steel or something to that effect. I mostly work in stainless and send out to professional HT- even still I normally grind in rough bevels leaving it fairly thick and finish the bevels after HT.
    Also I just started using kydex and scratched a few knives too >< Kydex makes an awesome sheath but it always leaves scratches :\

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  4 роки тому

      Well, I'm not overly concerned. I think you'd need to get even thicker for that to become an issue. I guess one good point would be that the edge will still be in the middle of the blade and still hardened to the same depth. Maybe the center of the blade would be soft? This may be a feature! Thank you for your comment! I'll have to think on it some more. Cheers man.

    • @007Jaredboy
      @007Jaredboy 4 роки тому +1

      @@RedBeardOps That is a good point, the edge should be fully hard. It would be interesting to do a test: HT one blade full thickness and RC test, then another with bevels pre-ground in and see if there's a difference; though there's a lot of variables that could happen to make this an uneven comparison...
