Modifying Ddrum Red Shot triggers to improve accuracy

If your Ddrum Red Shot drum rim triggers send inconsistent or inaccurate velocity readings to your drum trigger module, find out how I was able to make these triggers work reliably with my setup by improving them with this inexpensive mod.
These triggers are on acoustic drums with single ply mesh batter heads. Before the mod, the connected Yamaha DTX-502 trigger module picked up consistent drum hits with very inconsistent velocity readings. The settings in the DTX module couldn't correct the issue. So, since I could not return the triggers, I could either not use them or try to fix them. Thankfully, this fix worked for me.

Boom! just like that we are in working. Thank you for posting! I accidently order the 35 MM disks which are bigger than the blue foam and can "buzz" a bit but actually work a million times better than the original. no regrets and now i do not have to order different triggers. Thanks again.

I wonder, would you be willing to upload a video demonstrating how well your modified triggers work, showing how well they distinguish soft vs hard strikes as well as fast, consecutive strikes?
Well, the background music was recorded using my modded triggers (if you can hear it over my yapping). :-) Kick, 2 toms, and snare. Throw on some headphones and hopefully that'll give you an idea. For me, the mod took these from "I can't use them" to "I've played out with them."
I only tried (and ever planned to use) these on mesh heads. However, if you have the same velocity problem with mylar heads, I'd bet the mod would fix it.

Thanks! I got that either on eBay or Amazon (search "soldering third hand" and you should find them). Honestly, I rarely use it. But it came in handy to hold things up for the video :-)
Thx for this useful tip and this great video. I want to use it with a Roland Td-17 drummodule. What kind of pad type in the setting will be good for the red-hot? Do you have some good setting tips? Greetings from Germany. 👋😁
Danke! I had a Yamaha module. But I just scrolled through the different pad types in the module, picked the one that worked best, and adjusted the pad settings as needed. For example, you might need to tweak the pad settings for single ply vs. double ply heads, how tight/loose the head is, how you play, etc.). I hope it works for you!

I did the same replacement of the piezos only difference that i made its that i cut the blue sponge in half inserted the piezo solder it then glue it togueter to have a little more resistance qhen hitting the drums
I've used red shots before to varying degrees of success, but I had no clue that the piezo is located right behind the black tape on the bottom of the foam. That's an odd design. You'd think the piezo would be glued to the metal bracket with the trigger foam on top of it, which is how all other triggers are designed. I wonder how good it would perform if you modded it to be like other triggers.
So I have the chrome elite triggers. Would you recommend this mod for these. They track ok but I'd love to have em track better if i can. I'm using them with a pearl Mimic Pro Module. Great video. Thanks!!!!!
Hm. I've never used those. But if they're not cutting it for you, it might be worth trying to mod one of them. From a pic, it looks like you could try carefully peeling back the thin pad that separates the sensor from the drum head (where the wires are sandwiched between the larger and thinner pad). Maybe peel back a small spot around the wires to see if it also has a smaller rectangular sensor (like the ones I removed from the Red Shots). If so, I'd *guess* replacing it would be a similar improvement. (And if it already has a larger round sensor like the ones I added, maybe re-glue what you peeled up and abort mission.)
The chrome elite triggers are way higher quality than red-shots (as they should be considering the price). You should never have to modify high end e-drum equipment like that to get good triggering results. 99% of the time, the cause is something other than the trigger itself. Are you using mesh or acoustic heads with them? If you're using mesh, it's most likely an issue with how they're tuned, especially if you're using one-ply heads like Remo Silentstrokes, they are trickier to get good triggering out of because they vibrate more than 2 and 3 ply mesh heads. Investing in good mesh heads makes a huge difference with triggering accuracy. They also require a lot of trial and error with the trigger settings inside the module. If you haven't fiddled with those a lot, it's worth sinking some time into.
Not better if using new foam, piezo size? I try do this staff many years ago, but foam too small with that piezo, and, when you using alot, or remove triggers to box, and to drum- someday its fall off..
Where did you get your piezo disc replacements and what size were they?
I got them on Amazon. Those were 20mm diameter.

You can buy prewired discs cheap too.
Saw this video a month ago or so and I was always a bit frustrated with my Red Shots, because they were just a bit gibberish on my mesh. Ordered those Piezo things on Amazon and they work like a charm! I have no idea about any downsides and why this video has only so little views, but thanks a lot! :)
Don't waste time with glue, perfectly fine to use double sided carpet tape. Would also insulate the piezo from the head using neoprene, cut up a mousepad up or use furniture floor protectors
