Great job explaining this. Ive seen others take 15 minutes to explain and still walk away not understanding. You explained it perfectly so one can easily duplicate the process. And great tip on the audio recording that would have slipped my mind.
life saver !! Literally nobody has explained this! they all just say drop the 120fps clip into a 24fps timeline... I did exactly that and still noticed my footage looked choppy as hell at a normal rate. Thanks! I now know you I need to go to 80%
I'm still a little confused. I get the slomo part, but what if you have a 24p timeline and a 60p clip that you want to play back at normal speed (not slowmo) and if you're using Plural Eyes and editing in multicam in FCPx, show to resolve the issues of variable frame rate clips (like a screencast clip) and audio drift issues (if you didn't know to record the audio at the same frame rate as the camera during pre-production setup)?
Yes this is the question. This tutorial is very basic and ofc most would know higher fps in a 24 fps timeline would make havr to make it slowmo. For ur question for now theres only 1 workaround if u are using ur videos fr social media.basically for sm u tend to shoot almost all situations at a higher fps incase u want to slowdown in post unlike in film production u would know what to shoot and when. So u get ur high fps file to 24 or 25 fps timeline depending on shot in pal or ntsc, u basically interpret the footage to 25 or 24 fps. Then on the timeline if u need the normal speed u double up ur speed. From software when u interpret it will fill in the missing frames and giving u a normal smooth playback at normal speed. Hope this helps
Thanks for this video and the info !!! Just before your video I've watched a similar video from a different guy. Yours is far far far better; you talk slow and show examples and calculations. Thanks again!
Your explanation at the beginning is very confusing. What do you mean at the 1:00 mark when you say "or you can double it up to 80% in order to play back at 24 fps?" 80% of 60 is 48. If you slow it down 40% you get 24 fps. Where does this 80% come in? I've watched numerous videos on this subject and never heard that. Thanks.
Same here. Im confused. to use 40% to slow down the 60fps clip so it fits the 24fps timeline, does not represent a 50% slower... it represents that, 40% so .. i think to say 80% will be the normal speed in the 24fps timeline, I dont think its correct....
I am also confused by this explanation. I don't get how you can have normal speed of 60fps footage in a 24fps timeline without judder. I think in order to get the smooth effect, you definitely need to slow down the footage to match the 24fps timeline.. maybe I am wrong but would like to know.
Hi! Can I create one video in Adobe Premiere Pro that will combine 1080 60fps videos and 4K 30fps videos, and that all parts are in real-time? Or in that combination, 1080 60fps must be in slow motion? Thanks! :)
What can be done on music videos when musicians are playing parts of the same song but their videos are different frame rates. Altering the duration of their videos is not an option or we would no longer be in sync. What happens when exporting the final project say at 30 fps? Then there is the issue of audio drift.
I have a question: I have a music video shot and edited in 60fps. I want to render it in 24fps, I dont mind choppiness. But when I render the project, the video and audio are out of sync, the audio is always ahead of the lips movement. How to fix this?
In Edius you can simply in properties of the clip set what is your desired frame rate and it will automatically slow down/speed up video to set it right... I work at national television quality control check for outsourced video contributors (documentaries, series, reportages...) and I can tell you that wrong framerate converting is most common error for refusing materials... And people often argue with me that there editing software can work with any framerate and that we are stupid... But you clearly explained problem with different frameratea... Tnq
Hi how you shoot an audio clip in 24fps ... if i shoot a video clip in 60fps , I couldn’t find an option for that in my camera (80d)... any help would be highly appreciated
In FCPX - Can't you can drop it all into a 24fps timeline (24, 60 & 120) and it will all play in real time. To slow down a clip (if the clip is above 24fps), you can just drop it in the same 24fps timeline, highlight the clip and just hit "Automatic Speed" and it does all the calculation for you.
Unfortunately no, that’s not how it works. It will play 30, 60, and 120 FPS and 24 frames, and that will not add up and will result in choppy footage. Final Cur Pro is not that smart... yet ;)
I have no interest in delivering a 24p video to a client for broadcast tv. If I have a mix of 24 and 30p clips, is there a problem just exporting at 30p even with 24p material interspersed with 30p material?
Thank you for your fast, well explained and easy to follow video on mixing different frame rates. I have looked at a bunch of them, but never found anything this simple and straightforward. Thanks so much for your effort
I usually shoot 4K 60 fps but my 2nd camera shoots 30 fps and for some reason when I import them both in timeline I don’t have any visible jump in quality or speed . I can’t see an issue at all nor do I have an issue with rendering
Hello. Thank you for your video. It really helped a lot. However, I still have a question and I hope you know the answer to it as well. So here is the situation. I recorded a piano performance in two different cameras. One was set to 24fps and one was set to 59.98fps. The audio was recorded separately with another. device. The problem is that audio would sync perfectly with 24fps but not 59.98fps (of course). But if I adapt your method and retime 59.98, it would be extremely slow! Do you have any solution to this?? I usually have to use footages that are 29.97 and 24fps but I don't have much problem when I try to combine this and use them together in a FCPX project. Sorry for so many questions. I've been trying to find answer to this for a while and I thought you would know! Thank you.
Confused.. what do you mean by real-time? If you could explain what you mean by that.. also can or did you do tutorial of taking a 60fps clips and putting it in a 24p timeline and how that work? Is is alternative to slowing 60fps footage?
OK Big question here.... Using powerdirector 365 and a Canon 90D... Shooting slow motion with a Canon 90D @119.whaterver when I import the file into my PC it says that the file is 29fps even though the actual video is 119fps for whatever reason. Now when i drop that into powerdirector 365 where i have the standard set to 24fps as a project.... it says that there is going to be issues because of the different frame rate. So I went to the video speed disigner and the clip was 1:49:11 so I took and made the new duration of the total length(speed) of the video to 1:37:08 which would be 80 percent slower which should make this video clip now fit into the 24fps zone. Did I do this correctly? Probably will never get an answer but it sure would be nice. It would also be nice if powerdirector would just add percentages like your software does....
When you say you are trying to edit in 24 per second time line and you want to make sure that your audio is shot or set to 24 frame/sec, does that mean you want the video which also records the audio obviously to be set in 24 sec/frame right? The audio doesn't have it's separate time frame right? Just wanted to clarify as I was getting confused ...
Thanks for the info. Question... what if you're shooting a fight scene at 60fps , does the same editing rule apply? I'm guessing if you slow down the scene, the action won't look right.??
So... what if we don't want the video to play at 40% speed, or whatever... what if we want it to play at its real-time speed? Forgive me, if I am missing something. I am new to all of this but, seems to me that, if we slow down the footage, then that footage is essentially playing back in slow-mo, of varying degrees, based upon what the footage was shot in - calculated against the chosen frame rate for the project. So, something shot in 60fps will demonstrate slower movement than something shot in 30fps, which will be slower than something shot at 24fps when all are dropped into a 24fps timeline... with only the 24fps clip playing at its "normal" speed of movement. Yes? Or am I missing something?
How do we know the slomo rate? Is there any calculation for that? 60fps to realtime 24fps - 2X 120fps to realtime 24fps - ? 240fps to realtime 24 fps - ?
Dude just divide 24 by frame rate and that’s your answer of how much you need to slow down the clip to mathematically play smooth on 24 FPS project output. 24/60= 24/120= 24/240=
so im just finding this now, i have a question which is really bugging me! I use 3 Cameras - 2 Go Pro's & my iphone. go pros are at 59.94 and the iphone is dead 60 (FPS) is there any way i can change frame rate to match it all up? using final cut multicam and i just all goes out of time TIA
@@rickjacobs2059 Because both would fit into the 24fps timeline without any choppiness. So basically if you do 40% that will make your 60fps look like 24fps. If you would do 80% that would still be able to fit into the 24fps equation but would look more like 60fps without the choppiness. So if you did 160% it would be much faster but would have no choppiness if I am correct. There is a video that explains that equation really well and in the end the equation to me are like if you try to divide odds and evens and they just don't come up right in basic math but here if you do it wrong it will look choppy... I'll try and find that video for you about the equations and post back if that's allowed here.
So basically if I shoot 60fps and want to slow down for a few seconds then speed up the footage for a few more seconds on a 24fps timeline, would I have to automate the footage to be 80% for regular speed then 40% for the slow mo look?
Hello thanks for the info but am lot with the audio. Secondly Instagram rule said 30fps can I still post 25fps since my camera in pal region is not allowing 30fps
i had 59.97 footage from a pocket 3 as bts material, i recorded at 29.97, i edited ev in a 59.97 fps time line, so my solution was making a 29.97 time line and changing it to optic flow, is this the best way?
Thank you, this is really helpful. You mention shooting audio - unfortunately I've already shot hours of audio footage with two cameras set to different frame rates... (24fps and 30fps). I there anything I can do post production to be able to use both camera angles? Needless to say I wish I watched this before shooting!
so it's always multiplied by 2? 24x2=48/60fps= realtime 24x2x2=96/120fps= realtime what if i need to slow down a clip with a specific percentage like 60% (wc is lying between 40-80%), will it still yield a smooth clip? (60fps clip in a 24fps timeline)
I don't get it. If i double the slow mo speed from 40% to 80% (shot 60fps, edit on 24fps timeline), it is STILL slowed. It will play back smoothly, but its still slowed, isn't it?
hello there! thanks for this so informative video..:) i'd like to ask though, supposing i'm recording in 23.98 fps during daytime and my VND wont be able to compensate at 48-50 shutter speed; is by doubling the shutter speed won't ruin shot, let's say 96-100 SS, 192-200.. and so on..
Was the 59.98 footage shot in Constant Frame Rate or Variable Frame Rate? Does this same lesson apply to both types? I normally shoot CFR, but I’m looking at using VFR more often. It’s a new concept to me lol any tips of when to use which? I know you don’t get audio in VFR. Thoughts?
Thank you....Thank you....Thank you! You have made this much easier, I am slowly learning to edit on bigger software, and your videos are such a tremendous help. 👍💯👏👏👏
@@MomentumProductions1992 that would be great. I guess I do have to some questions. hi. how can i put 60fps footage into 30fps timeline without slowing it down. i mean i want it to play back at normal speed with 60fps smooth in 30fps cinematic timeline
Thank you for the info Josh, really helpful. I'm planning on shooting enterviews with 2 differents cameras, one shooting 25p and the other 30p. The audio will be recorded externally. Will everything workout well on a 24p timeline when I convert the speeds to match the timeline? Will the audio sync up too? Thank yoi!
I'm still confused, hope someone can enlighten me! My logic is telling me that a 1 second 60fps clip placed in a 24 fps timeline will become a 2.5 second clip (60/24 = 2.5), and therefore setting it to play at 0.8 speed will make it even longer / slower? Where am I going wrong?
@@MomentumProductions1992 Ok, so I'm wanting to move to the whole 24p, better look, etc. But, I currently have a project and all of the footage was shot at higher frame rates than 24p. 60p, 120p & even some 240p. NOT all of it will be slomo,. But certainly, some will be. Is there any advantage (more "cinematic") to using a 24p timeline?
is it still working if I speed up a 23,976fps clip 1,0427% to fit it with a 25fps video to avoid problems in the exported version or is this difference to small?
What if you have a 60fps timeline, but have clips that are 30fps, or 24fps... can they be imported into the project, or is the idea that the project must always be set to the frame rate of the video with the lowest frame rate?
being new to video making this has been something that has been confusing me until your video. So easy to understand for an old dog learning new tricks with the bonus that you use FCPX - Thank you now subscribed and hopefully you will do a fe more videos like this?!
Great video. Thanks. I have a doubt though. Lets say I wanted to edit 24fps, and 120fps clip on a 24fps timeline. I wanted to play certain parts of the 120fps video at 100% and certain parts at 20% like speed ramping. will it make the video choppy?
No, it would be smooth. 120fps at 100% would divide by 24 (5) and 120fps at 20% would be 24fps, which again divides by 24 (1). In conclusion, if would be smooth, because it divides by 24 and no frames would be skipped, nor duplicated.
Hi, I have a question : I make videos with DJI products who record videos in 29,97 FPS (even if it's written 30 FPS on the camera). The file after is in 29,97 FPS. If I want to post those videos on UA-cam, do I must create a project on FinalCut in 30 FPS or 29,97 FPS and put all the 29,97 FPS in that project, please ? I really don't know if it's not good to open a 30 FPS project for putting 29,97 FPS videos inside for editing. And what about UA-cam ? Thanks
Hi Josh. I usually drop my different frame rate clips into the timeline, then Select All, and choose Automatic timing so I don't have to do calculations. Works pretty well. Any reason not to do this?
Does automatic timing slow down their speed of "original action"? Do they appear to be moving slower than real-time? Does it also work with using a higher frame rate timeline with clips shot in frame rates lower than the timeline? Or will those clips turn out to appear to be moving faster than real-time?
@@mgelinfilms7344 Automatic timing conforms the clip frame rate to the timeline frame rate. So if you are working on a 24fps timeline and have a 30fps clip, it will retime it and slow it down 20% to work without frame drops on the 24p timeline. If you have a 60p clip, it will slow it down 40%.
You mentioned audio has to be at the same "frame rate" as the video. Audio is not measured by frame rate, it is measured by sample rate, 48Khz, 41Khz, etc,

I'm assuming audio recorded at let's say 60 or 120 would not be usable if you're using that clip in a 24 frame timeline, right?

Thank you for this video!
awesome- thanks so much! excellently explained.
Glad it was helpful!
So basically if I shoot 60fps and want to slow down for a few seconds then speed up the footage for a few more seconds on a 24fps timeline, would I have to automate the footage to be 80% for regular speed then 40% for the slow mo look?
80% is not regular speed, ita 80% of the regular speed. So its just slowed down less
Excellent explanation, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
So you can only make it work if you slow down the higher fps footage? What if you don’t want the footage in slow mo?
Hello thanks for the info but am lot with the audio. Secondly Instagram rule said 30fps can I still post 25fps since my camera in pal region is not allowing 30fps
i had 59.97 footage from a pocket 3 as bts material, i recorded at 29.97, i edited ev in a 59.97 fps time line, so my solution was making a 29.97 time line and changing it to optic flow, is this the best way?
Well explained thanks a lot. Now I’m comfortable doing the next video shoot 🙌🏼
Thank you, this is really helpful. You mention shooting audio - unfortunately I've already shot hours of audio footage with two cameras set to different frame rates... (24fps and 30fps). I there anything I can do post production to be able to use both camera angles? Needless to say I wish I watched this before shooting!
Just curious your solution for this?
Click detach audio from the faster clips so they won’t be slowed down along with the video.
so it's always multiplied by 2?
24x2=48/60fps= realtime
24x2x2=96/120fps= realtime
what if i need to slow down a clip with a specific percentage like 60% (wc is lying between 40-80%), will it still yield a smooth clip? (60fps clip in a 24fps timeline)
Thank u soo much. Ur a legend!
Hi, example: import my video 60 fps edit speed for slow motion, export final video in 24fps or 60fps?
very good...very clear and concise
Glad you liked it
very helpful- thanks
Glad it was helpful!
that was a nice explanation
I don't get it. If i double the slow mo speed from 40% to 80% (shot 60fps, edit on 24fps timeline), it is STILL slowed. It will play back smoothly, but its still slowed, isn't it?
hello there! thanks for this so informative video..:) i'd like to ask though, supposing i'm recording in 23.98 fps during daytime and my VND wont be able to compensate at 48-50 shutter speed; is by doubling the shutter speed won't ruin shot, let's say 96-100 SS, 192-200.. and so on..
awesome video man. thank you for this!
Wow. Thank you so much for this video. It's really helpful!
Thoughts?
What would the process be if you are using 50fps footage in a 25fps timeline?
Thank you....Thank you....Thank you! You have made this much easier, I am slowly learning to edit on bigger software, and your videos are such a tremendous help. 👍💯👏👏👏
Glad I could help!
Great video mate. Been look for this info for ages. Just getting to videography myself
Thanks so much man! Let me know if you have any questions for future tutorial/review videos :)
@@MomentumProductions1992 that would be great. I guess I do have to some questions. One is that I am looking to get a new camera as at the minute i have a a Canon 800D, thinking of getting a Sony A7iii with the tamron 28 -75mm 2.8 to start with. Was going to go with the Nikon and changed my mind. Also wasnt sure which editing programme to use. I currently use final cut pro x.
Thanks again
hi. how can i put 60fps footage into 30fps timeline without slowing it down. i mean i want it to play back at normal speed with 60fps smooth in 30fps cinematic timeline
Thank yoi!
Great question! Would love to know how it worked out
If you bring down 60fps or up to real time on that 24 timeline, will the motion blur/shutter speed be terrible if panning?
I'm still confused, hope someone can enlighten me! My logic is telling me that a 1 second 60fps clip placed in a 24 fps timeline will become a 2.5 second clip (60/24 = 2.5), and therefore setting it to play at 0.8 speed will make it even longer / slower? Where am I going wrong?
Do you always playback in real time is 80%?
Heya just wondering, why is it that the footage still looks choppy even at 80%.
Because the software still has to eliminate some frames so you perceive this loss as choppiness.
Great clear explanation.
Thank you!!!
Hope all is well, will this help in rendering ? My timeline play back all are in sync but when rendered the audio drifts ?
is it still working if I speed up a 23,976fps clip 1,0427% to fit it with a 25fps video to avoid problems in the exported version or is this difference to small?
What if you have a 60fps timeline, but have clips that are 30fps, or 24fps... can they be imported into the project, or is the idea that the project must always be set to the frame rate of the video with the lowest frame rate?
being new to video making this has been something that has been confusing me until your video. So easy to understand for an old dog learning new tricks with the bonus that you use FCPX - Thank you now subscribed and hopefully you will do a fe more videos like this?!
Yes of course! I will work on some more video for you. Thank you so much for the support :)
This will not work if you do not want your footage to look slow-motion right?
Yes then you would be filming at same fps and editing at same fps if you don't want slow mo
In conclusion, if would be smooth, because it divides by 24 and no frames would be skipped, nor duplicated.
very good video. nice one mate.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks a lot
I tried To Match 24Fps clip to 30fps n Did the calculation got 1.25 n sped up clip 24fps to 1.25 n playback/Rendering was smooth
Thanks
What about 59.97 and 60 fps in one 60 fps timeline? is it possible? or maybe it's better to make one timelien 59.97 fps and throw 60 fps files into it
I have two clips one at 23.9 and one at 24 the audio does not match how can I fix it? asking for a friend
Audio is not measured by frame rate, it is measured by sample rate, 48Khz, 41Khz, etc,
Thank you dude😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great work Josh ;) Keep it up mate
Hello. I am editing an interview which unfortunately is shot at 60 fps on one camera and 30 fps on the other. What is the best way to approach the edit considering there is a lot of speaking involved? Thank You
Hi there, as long as you export it in 30fps, you will be fine!
@MomentumProductions1992 Thank You
24/60=0.4 (0.4*60=24) so if u want slow down 60fps in 24 timeline use 40% for speed/duration . Its a premier pro calculation. If you want speed up the slowmo use 100% for speed/duration.
Timelime/footage fps=%
I am doing a research project in which I want to freeze the LCD display of my computer for 10 seconds. I dont want computer to refresh the display. Is there away to do it? This may be not be right channel to ask this apologies for spam
I had always wondered how to mix frame rates. Thanks for the awesome vid!
Thank you for watching. I hope I did a good job explaining it :)
Bro what is the normal and slow motion speed, if I want to convert a 60fps video into 30fps timeline ?
