There are so many videos on YT about frame rates, yet u still somehow provide new and useful information. This is the kind of content everyone needs :)
Exactly. I didn't expect to learn much about the subject, but I was very wrong :) Shooting my 1st wedding tommoroy, so I might stick to 50 fps post of the time
Dear Mr. Jacques Crafford, I believe this video is more comprehensible for a layman person like me. You have left nothing to raise any further queries. Hats off bro. for this nice video.
This is what I needed right now because the whole NTSC/PAL was so confusing to me especially whether or not I have to edit the clips on 24fps or 25. You are becoming my favourite filmmaker! Your clips are just so crisp and they make me excited to keep on going and learn more everyday.
I finally feel like I know a little bit about frame rates and the proper use of ND filter after watching your video (watched many others before). Thank you so much Jacques.
Great stuff! I switched to 24 for the "cinematic" look for a year, and the problems I had with mixing varying frame rates far out-weighed any benefits I found with 24. It's just too hard to work with when you have multiple video sources of different settings.
You became one of my favorite youtubers! One by one, you are filling the gaps, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Can't wait to see your next tutorial
I’ve checked out a bunch of videos on this topic and you are the only one that has explained this perfectly! Thank you for making this easy to understand!
Straight to the point, also sincere and honest sharing to the world.. love the pace of the explanations 🙏🏽 thanks for everything, as film school is not for everyone(money wise) blessings from Mauritius 🇲🇺
I'm glad that I've found your channel. The way your camera shots are taken and look! Top Level for sure! And your videos are made exactly in the perfect length without spending time on less important stuff or let's say small talk. Keep up the great work!
Wow. I'm really impressed by the quality of your content, especially, you show us a lot of your high-quality footage, and comparisons, which help me to understand the concepts and your points easily. Hope you can keep posting turotials, really helpful.
This video is way more than just a youtube video , this is a comprehensive guideline which needs to be seen times and times over to grasp all the knowledge it brings to the table
fok, this man is really good at teaching! there are some point here I never hear other youtubers talk about. What makes this stand out is CLEAR and TO THE POINT. no fluff!!!! Trust factor is through the roof. keep it up!
Such an incredible video! Very informative and easy to understand with all the real-life examples given. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
Your video are like filmaking meditation for me , I can learn a whole lot here by subscribing only this one channel , instead of subscribing other four and get confuse . Thankyou brother you are doing a great job for filmmakers like us🙂
I genuinely learn something that changes the way I look at videography and editing with every single one of these videos. Always look forward to seeing what you do next! Thankyou!
Merci Jacques! I feel like I'm in good hands watching your videos. There's a lot of noise online, but thankfully your channel has content that's relevant and constructive without the hard sell. It's refreshing to see a pro sharing concise knowledge. 👍

did you compare the NiSi to the Polar Pro VND? How does it hold up? And do you combine the NiSi with Mist Filters like Tiffen Pro Mist? If so, is there any vignetting with 24-70 zoom? Thanks a lot!! :)
Great explanation! As I live in Denmark, I naturally began shooting in 25p when I started filming my surroundings. Transitioning from a GoPro with built-in horizontal stabilisation to a Sony camera with only SteadyShot, I noticed that 25p footage seemed a bit choppy. Thankfully, I received advice to record in 30p and then slow it down to 24p, resulting in smoother playback. Since Sony cameras adhere strictly to either NTSC or PAL standards, I switched all my cameras to NTSC. However, during editing, I set the timeline to 24p, meaning I have to bid farewell to shooting in 25p and 50p for the time being.
Wow, man! As a working cinematographer, I am very familiar with all the points discussed here, but it's just such a pleasing experience to watch your footage! Very beautiful shots!
What is the reason you don't shoot mostly with 30 FPS at 1/60sec., resp. at 1/50sec. if there are any flickering lights around? And 60 FPS - 1/125 sec. for moderate slow motion, resp. 1/100sec. with flickering lights? Does one loose the cinematic look with 30 instead of 25 FPS?
I'm a videographer for about 3 years. Still exploring and learning through UA-cam. And I was looking for a video that has a good explanation about the uses of frame rates, the differences, and when to use them. I was looking for this video for almost a year. Big THANKS to YOU!
I saw this in my suggested and was pretty worried it would be yet another youtuber who is misinforming everyone with what "cinematic" is. thank god this is actually what people need to hear. good stuff my dude.
Thanks my dude! I have to say the title still cringes me up but since people always ask this question I had to make a video about it and hopefully they will watch the entire thing and realise that it's not such an easy answer as "just shoot slowmo".
I just discovered your channel yesterday and this question popped in my head and now you make a video about it, this is perfect! I really enjoy your content, it's super helpful to me! Thanks a lot buddy!
Thank you so much. You earned so effectively my subscription. Video has so much value information with lots of examples which lots of people actually need.
You are just the best!! Your content is so useful and straight to the point. I learn a lot from your videos, 10 minutes but so packed I have to see them with lot of concentration. And your footage is soooo fantastic.Thank you so much and keep going Sir!
Jacques, congratulations for your channel. I need to say that in the Brazil the workflow is NTSC. Pal-M color system used in analogic broadcast only in the air transmission and received in old tube TVs. In the studios all productions are NTSC till today. A curiosity: in Brazil the VHS VCRs pro and domestics many years ago had a button to watch PAL-M or NTSC. All Hollywood films till the events was a NTSC format.
This was super helpful man. Even though lots of it was giving me confirmation on things I had already learnt I still came away with new knowledge! Thanks
By far the most helpful frame rate video I’ve ever seen. I’ve typically shot most events at 50p for then entire event (just in case I want to slow it down) but I’m obviously losing light & quality. I’m going to try and mix it up a lot more after seeing this. Cheers bro.
*OUTSTANDING* video Jacques! I'm new to video and I've been looking at hundreds of UA-cam clips on frame rates, but yours is without a doubt the best of all of them (and you're also a Saffa to boot!). The only thing that confuses me is why it took me so long to find your channel. Now excuse me while I go and binge watch your other videos (after liking and subscribing). 😀
Regarding shooting everything at a higher frame rate because it is safer. This is correct if we talk about 50 fps vs 25 fps, because the standard movie shutter angle is 180 degrees, hence 1/50 s. OTOH, 1/50 is also the standard shutter speed for TV, so if you shoot everything at 50 fps @ 1/50 s shutter, then you can either slow it down or decimate to 25 fps with effectively 180 degree shutter, no drawbacks whatsoever.
@@TobiasHess_ True, but at least you will have SOME sort of slo-mo with real frames without interpolation. And if you don't want slo-mo, just throw away every other frame, and you'll get 25p @ 1/50, which is the standard cinematic rate. As such, shooting 50p @ 1/50 is no worse than 25p @ 1/50, and sometimes is better. Maybe, the only drawback is a higher bitrate.
I'm in Africa especially in cameroon, and I'm very glad to feed from your lessons cuz no film instructor has the time to do so for us. As beginner in the film Domaine
I recently got a camera (Sony fx30) and because of the region it gives me 25fps instead of 24fps. I recently finished studying film and we generally used 24fps there. Will there be any issue with me using 25fps instead of 24fps?
Well done, Jacques. Now I understand it better. Q1: I shoot movies with gopro on my helmet when flying. So I have to set auto shutter speed cause when I set 1/50 SS and 25fps gopro has only one variable - iso auto. And it can't go under 100 iso. How to solve it? Only ND filter or is there another way? Q2: or would u recommend different fps? Until now I used 30fps and 5,3K then cut it and export as 4K 30fps. Thanks in advance.
3:16 I’m not getting that… 🙈 “automatically slowed down” - does that mean, the conformed clip is in “slow motion” oder slower than captured? I have no experience with video thus far, I’m coming from photography. So, I am trying to figure out, how to set up the frame rate if I am using different cameras or shots.
Bro as a beginner that has no clue about cameras setting that's just an excellent explanation, you explain better than my college professors haha. One thing I wish you did talk about is that the more higher shutter speed for slow motion the more the image gets darker.. I wish you mentioned how to still get a bright image with higher shutter speed. Also for low light videos, if higher shutter speed makes the video more darker during day means at night its almost impossible to shoot slow motions? I might be wrong but I hope you help me with this 🙏
Very interesting. I'm a (very) amateur underwater film-maker and frame rate is definitely one of the topics I need info on. Like a lot of people I had assumed that faster is better, but that's patently not true after watching this. tbh I even wondered why there were options for 24 and 25 fps, so you cleared that up too. thanks.
This is by far the absolute most informative video i have seen regarding the subject of framerates and shutterspeed. I actually had to watch it a few times because you packed so much information into such a efficiently short video.
Thank you. I have just learned so much and to have it demonstrated with such high quality examples is so refreshing. What frame rate should I use for UA-cam, as so far everyone has said to use 30 and yet my 25 look OK to me.
Glad it was helpful! 🙏 I shoot 25 FPS most of the time. But, frame rate is something that's usually dictated by clear intent. I actually made a video about frame rates. You should check it out: ua-cam.com/video/k9KPy3LrhVQ/v-deo.html
I'm so glad someone said it, stop with the overuse of slow motion.. it's a trend that I really can't wait to see the back of. As you say, use it to emphasise moments.
Beast of a video. Love the tips and real life examples that look stunning (which makes it immediately believable that the tips are legit) , and when to use what. Subbed!

I spend a lot of time on UA-cam trying to learn from people who don't know much themselves. I guess I'll just limit myself to your channel and the official Blackmagic Design channel. This will save myself a lot of time and confusion. For a change, it's nice to hear the voice of someone who isn't trying to be the biggest star in his videos. Cheers.

A great tutorial
Thanks Jorge, so glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you. I have just learned so much and to have it demonstrated with such high quality examples is so refreshing.
What frame rate should I use for UA-cam, as so far everyone has said to use 30 and yet my 25 look OK to me.
Glad it was helpful! 🙏
I shoot 25 FPS most of the time. But, frame rate is something that's usually dictated by clear intent. I actually made a video about frame rates. You should check it out: ua-cam.com/video/k9KPy3LrhVQ/v-deo.html
You have a new suscriptor from México, your work and the way of explain it’s incredible, and very very useful. I really like your videos. Greetings.
Thanks Paco, really grateful to have your support!
Hello I have an FX3 and I can't set it to 30P I have 29.97P on my screen can you help me please? THANKS
Immediately clicked on the video and watched it when I saw it on my feed! Amazing content as always! And your intro is so cool! 🔥 Keep it coming 💪
Thanks Imran, your comments are most encouraging!
I'm so glad someone said it, stop with the overuse of slow motion.. it's a trend that I really can't wait to see the back of. As you say, use it to emphasise moments.
Yes bro! I was the king of overusing slowmo, lesson learned!
The best video on this topic, Thank you very much ❤️🙌🏻
Beast of a video. Love the tips and real life examples that look stunning (which makes it immediately believable that the tips are legit) , and when to use what. Subbed!
Great tutorial. I use the NiSi variable nd filters as well & am very happy with them. 😀👍
Yeeew thanks Nash, they're pretty great so glad I got them!

Aaaah thanks brother, that means so much to me!
Amazing work.Would love to know what type of lenses you use
Thanks Varuj! I mostly use the 24-70mm F/2.8 GM and the 35mm F/1.4 GM
Great video! 😎👍
Thank you Dominik, glad you enjoyed it!
may i know what aperture you maintain mostly all of your shots , if you mentioned in video using nd filter without bump up the aperture
Can u please do a video regarding lenses for different shots uniquee angles we need different types of lenses, where should we use what type of lenses.
This is the absolute best video I have ever seen on UA-cam
I spend a lot of time on UA-cam trying to learn from people who don't know much themselves. I guess I'll just limit myself to your channel and the official Blackmagic Design channel. This will save myself a lot of time and confusion. For a change, it's nice to hear the voice of someone who isn't trying to be the biggest star in his videos. Cheers.
Dude! Thanks man, that means so much to me! My goal with the channel is 100% this, NO BS, more value!
