    Great stuff! I switched to 24 for the "cinematic" look for a year, and the problems I had with mixing varying frame rates far out-weighed any benefits I found with 24. It's just too hard to work with when you have multiple video sources of different settings.

    What is the reason you don't shoot mostly with 30 FPS at 1/60sec., resp. at 1/50sec. if there are any flickering lights around? And 60 FPS - 1/125 sec. for moderate slow motion, resp. 1/100sec. with flickering lights? Does one loose the cinematic look with 30 instead of 25 FPS?

    Not to overcomplicate things, but even in PAL regions you might concider shooting 24fps.
    25fps is historically grown because of the frequncy of the power grid being 50hertz in PAL regions. When you shoot 25fps with a 1/50th shutter that matched the 50hertz of older TVs and you get smooth playback.
    That's a different story for phones or tablets, which run on NTSC standard with 60hertz or more.
    Playing a 25fps video back on a 30hertz monitor leads to stuttering, because 60 divided by 25 isn't dividable cleanly and every frame isn't visible for the same time, leading to stutter.
    If you want a natural look and smooth playback on phones and tablets, you want to shoot 24fps with a 180 degree shutter(1/48th, 1/50th)
    If you want to shoot 60fps and don't plan on slowing it down, shoot 60fps and a 360 shutter(60fps 1/50th, 1/60th)
    In first instance shutter has the most impact on natural motion blur. 1/50th,1/60th looks the most natural to the human eye.
    try it and be surprised(:

    Jacques, just recently discovered your channel and love it! Great and very helpful material, so thanks for that. I live in a PAL region and have my Sony set to PAL, but then I can't use the newer XAVC HS format because it doesn't have 25fps for some reason. I've heard that the XAVC HS format is better than the older XAVC S, so I'm thinking of switching the camera to NTSC and shooting at 24fps with a 1/50 shutter speed. Are there any drawbacks to doing this? Thanks!

    you shoot 25 and also 60? So when you want to switch from realtime to a slomo shot you need to switch from ntsc to pal on your sony, every time?

    • @jacques_crafford
      @jacques_crafford  2 роки тому +1

      Only sometimes, like when I feel I need the extra frames but honestly I hardly ever jump between 25 & 60. I do have a shortcut to switch from PAL to NTSC but then you're unable to playback the files shot in PAL while in NTSC mode and vice versa.

  • @paulie2140
    @paulie2140 Рік тому +2

    Thank you Jacques for your continued work, you are extremely inspiring. I just have a question re the conforming footage part. I have mainly been shooting in a VFR at 60fps at 25p (in camera slow-mo) so when I drag to a 24 or 25 fps timeline, my footage is slow and smooth and without audio, which is fine (if I do an interview I use 25fps of course). I'm using a gimbal most of the time and I make promo vids with speed ramping at the forefront of my mind, with the intent of adding a cool music track and sound design.
    My question is about VFR, as wasn't really touched on in your vid..I figure that if I set my speed in post to 300% everything moves at what appears to be 'normal speed'. I also find that my footage is so much smoother, on a gimbal (I have a Pan GH5S) in 60fps VFR, as opposed to 25 or 50 fps.
    So would you say this is good practice? No need to conform. I find the 50fps mode movement isn't steady, even on a gimbal. I find it easier to shoot everything in slow-mo as I know it will be smooth and if i want normal speed I just up the speed in post. PS I'm in England so on PAL.
    Thanks again for all your hard work! I hope you or somebody could share views on this.

      @@jacques_crafford no THANK YOU!! Learning SO much! I will be investigating your ‘conform’ trick to try 24p again instead of always 60. I just found that when panning, it would get quite choppy as the sensor is outputting so much information that there are not enough frames to record all this movement at 24 or even 30. That’s why I went to 60p but in a 60p timeline to stay real-time and smooth crisp frames with a little motion-blur but too much motion-blur is annoying. You’re one of those people Jacques that probably hated The Hobbit because it was shot at 48 frames a second. I worship Peter Jackson and kudos to him to try to find a way to better handle the insanely fast movement in that movie. I wish I could shoot in 48p just to try it instead of my usual 60p. It’s 2022 so why do we have to restrain ourselves to 24p which was invented in the 1940’s when all they had was the rotating mechanical shutter wheel to control exposure? Is it tradition? Old-school? That’s why I try different things to try and see what works best!! SO appreciate talking to and getting feedback from an amazing videographer Jacques while I sort this out for myself! You should do a more complete video on this fascinating subject. RESPECT!! 👏

    • @jacques_crafford
      @jacques_crafford  2 роки тому +1

      Not really, he's just debating about wether or not you need to keep the shutter rule or not and it will always come down to creative choice, in this case I prefer my way. The fact remains that if you import 30P, 60P, 120P footage into a 25P timeline and you don't conform it, it will have a terrible lag to it. Not so with 50p & 100P because it's in the same equivalent as your 25P timeline but then it depends on your shutter speed.

    • @stivnov
      @stivnov 2 роки тому

      @@jacques_crafford I completely agree with you about conforming the video to timeline.
      My main confusion is this:
      I always thought the "cinematic" look is based on a particular movement blur, which is achieved by a shutter speed of 1/50 second no matter which framerate you're filming at (considering you're not planning to slow down the video).
      So it looks like if I want to have the same feel in my 50FPS video I just need to keep the same shutter speed of 1/50 and ignore 180 degrees rule, right?

I know Magic Lantern allows me to shoot 1920 x 1080 60 fps rather than 1280 x 720 in 60 fps. Is there a work-around in Magic Lantern for Shutter Speed? Is 125 Shutter Speed do-able for slow-mo with 60 fps?

    • @jacques_crafford
      @jacques_crafford  Рік тому

      Aaaaah yes, the extra 5 won't really affect your image, so you shouldn't see a difference if you shoot 60 at 125 shutter, it's just to small of an increment.

    I have questions
    Let’s say I have recorded my contents at varying fps, with 180 rule ss
    When I go to let’s say adobe premiere
    The sequence that I choose is 25Fps
    Then adobe tell me about different fps n bla bla and I keep continue (Windows Version)
    Then let’s say I want to slowdown the 100fps clip for 60%
    The 50Fps for 40%
    And the 25 fps at normal speed
    Is it ok?
    I mean all the clips with varying fps and getting slowed are edited at 25fps sequence?

    what would you shoot in with a POV video. normally I shoot at 30fps because of fast movements in my POV video's. my experience learns me that when I shoot at 25fps my image is getting stutters because of the fast movement it seems like.

    Hi, videographer from South Africa asking...
    When you edit on a 24fps or 25fps timeline and your normal footage is also 24fps or 25fps, but you also have higher frame rates footage like 60fps to include in the video for your slow motion part, how do you import those higher rate footage in your video? do you adjust it to be 24fps or 25fps and slow it down in the edit? or do you keep the 60fps when you import to be able to have a nice flow for slow motion?
    Also if you realise, you shot everything 60 fps but you want to use a 24 fps timeline (for example), do you still get the 24fps cinematic effect even though you shot at 60 fps? in that case, do you need to adjust it to 24fps when you import? Thank you!
    It will help me big time if you can answer. Thank you!

    Excellent video!!! what is the best frame rate if im shooting video from inside a moving vehicle out the window?

    • @jacques_crafford
      @jacques_crafford  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much! It depends how fast the vehicle is going and what you're shooting so I can't specify but I always try realtime first and then move my way up to a slower speed if the objects / vehicle is moving too fast.

    @jacques tell me one thing please. I shoot on a Sony 7R V and with 24 fps. When I do soo my the whole footage is jittery and makes me crazy. when I do paning movement it is jittery and cannot see anything, not smooth. Here is the question - they say in the movies they use 24 fps too but never seen anything jittery junk like in my videos. How can it be? I also use the shutter speed properly.

    Quick question if you have time; what codec/bitrate would you recommend alongside these FPS settings for an A7IV? I assume SLOG3 for grading purposes/luts but any help would be appreciated. Keep up the great videos!!

    when I use FCP, do I need to convert frame rate first??

    • @jacques_crafford
      @jacques_crafford  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, always! So you have to do it before you drag it into your timeline. It's called conform in FCP support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/conform-frame-sizes-and-rates-ver3363b44e/mac

    Wow, I have almost always been shooting 60p for the last 4-5 years and recently trying to shoot 24 fps on my Sony A7IV handheld. I just shot yesterday and all the footage actually looks pretty horrible. Lot's of jitters and wobbles like you stated in the beginning and I even had active stabilizing turned on, but it almost looks like there was 0 stabilization.. It is so bad I do not even know how to save the video. I even checked my camera 4 times today to see if I had something set up wrong. It almost looks like I had my shutter at 1/20th or something but it was all shot at 1/50th. What in the heck could have gone wrong?

    So going over the shutter speed makes the video look choppy
    I’ve seen that technique been used in films to make things look faster…
    Is there a name for that particular technique??

    I have tried so many times to shot at 24, or 30 fps. Indeed I followed 1/2xFPS rule, so the shutter was 1/48 or 1/60. But it always got terrible jerky background. I tried to pan camera not too fast but still got unwatchable movie. The person's movement is good, but the background is like a stroboscope, just make the eyes pain. How to shot it without getting that strobe effect? I even tried different shutter speeds from 1/10 to 1/190 with not much difference if panoramic strobe effect.

    What timeline resolution would be apt to get a good output. I plan to slow down the 120 fps and 60 rps footage for some cinematic look, and when i am not slowing it down, i plan to use as it is...

    Light flicker can be mitigated by choosing matching shutter speed, which on professional video cameras is not directly linked to frame rate and can be dialed to 1 Hz or even to .1 Hz. Consumer-grade video cameras as well as film cameras have shutter speed linked to frame rate, this is true. Also, how 24 fps is related to 60 Hz AC frequency? It does not seem to. But it is related to 60 Hz scanning frequency of American and some Japanese TV sets.
    Choosing frame rate based on a region makes sense, but not because of light flicker, but because of broadcasting standards. Then again, 24 fps has become the worldwide frame rate not only because it is used for movies worldwide, but also because European HD Ready standard requires consumer devices to support 24 fps alongside 25 fps and 50 fps. On another hand, 25 fps is not supported in NTSC-region DVD and BD as well in broadcast, so if you want to author to physical media - yeah, I know - and distribute in the U.S., 24 fps is better.

    Greetings Jacques, Thank you again for the great info above, Can you potentially please help me, I am shooting on an iPhone 13 Pro Max, External Mic Smallrig S20 plugged in via Lightning adapter & Filmic Pro V7.3 latest version. I am not sure what I am doing wrong but I am currently receiving cleaner audio from the built in Audio front mic from the iPhone 13 than I am from S20 mic. I assume I am doing something wrong but I can't figure it out. I am recording in a really quiet room and there is a consistent loud white noise in the background of every test video currently. The mic also has a rabbit foot on. I have tried to adjust gain control manually. I am a bit at a loss and brand new to Video. Is there always background noise in an audio file. Thank you for your time, if you can help. Sincerely LG.
