My mom pointed out, not only did Hiccup lose his foot, it's on the same side that he had the stirrup that controlled Toothless's tail, indicating that his foot got stuck when he fell, snapping his ankle beyond repair. I was 15 in 2010, and that was the coolest story beat I'd ever heard.
that's not a bad theory. The older Vikings would have seen how badly mangled his foot was and amputated it. Only theory I've been hearing is that Toothless in desperation bit Hiccups foot too hard while trying to catch him.
What I love about this trilogy is that they actually let the kids grow up, and I as an audience member grew up alongside them. I feel like it's something rare with movies, like Despicable Me is NEVER going to let Agnes grow up.
Loved the 1 line "They killed HUNDREDS of us!" "and we've killed THOUSANDS of them!" Eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind. We can't even get adults to realize this let alone kids.
As a child, I was really impressed by the decision to have Hiccup lose a leg in the fight with the dragon. They thought that it would be too dark for a childrens' film, but the test audience begged them to keep it, as it showed realistic consequences, plus Hiccup and Toothless were basically the same now.
@@Goofy_edits2639 Im pretty sure its where toothless first grabbed him, during the scene its a dive for toothless to grab Hiccup before they are engulfed in the flames, so Toothless is being pretty rash, and probably ripped of his foot upon the first attempt to grab him, before enveloping him in his wings. Which is a nice parallel to how Hiccup broke his tail.
Listen. There's a difference between a kid's movie and a family. Kids movie is like despicable me where there is a whole movie of just brainrout that 5 year olds can giggle on . But a franchise like How to train your dragon is a family movie . There is a real compelling story. With real emotions. And some muture themes . With real moral . Kids movie - only for kids . Parents are gonna take there kids to the theatres to see the movie and just wait for the movie to wrap up and hope that there kids are having fun . Family movie. A movie where the whole family can really have Fun together and some cries together.
Despicable Me had some nice heart. The first one at least, I can't speak for the other ones. Kinda sucks that the original movie got sullied by Facebook minion memes and sequels nobody seems to like.
The Despicable Me movies are definitely more in the family movie category. People just tend to think of them as less mature since they're comedies without some of the really heavy stuff we tend to see with Pixar and DreamWorks. But that doesn't mean they're not enjoyable for all ages. A kids movie would be more something like Sesame Street.
Partially agree: The first one definitely was a family movie, because it mainly revolved around a man learning to be a dad and three abandoned children finding a family. I loved that movie. But then, the marketing team discovered the popularity of minion merch and increasingly abandoned content quality for funny gibberish. It’s become so oversaturated, I learned to dislike everything that has minions in/on it, because it’s simply too much and too constant. Didn’t see the latest movie, but feedback is definitely mixed.

This first movie is still one of my absolute favorite movies. And I love how, even despite trying to joke about the movie, even Alex cannot resist how adorable Toothless is.
What always impressed me about this series is Hiccup not only losing his leg, but it staying lost. I don't know of any other series that does that. Every one I can think of usually gives them the missing piece back magically, or at least covers it up. In How To Train You Dragon though it's visible through the rest of the movies and even in the television series.
If you watch the series, you can even see the Hiccup almost constantly upgrading it (and Toothles´s fin too), which is VERY in character for him, as he is right from the beginning set up as inventor and tinkerer. Sometimes he even turns his peg leg into an advantage instead of handicap, like when he hides his sword there, so he appears unarmed to the enemies, only to later suprise them.
@@veronikamajerova4564 There was also both a moment where Toothless grabbed his leg and runs off, to later cut back to see it detached and hiccup is still sitting there waiting for him to notice. And a scene where he stepped into a bear trap and nothing happened because it was his metal leg.
It was also utilized all the time. There were some times in the series with stuff that should have hurt Hiccup, but it hit his peg leg, or times when he would be running from something only for his leg to come off. Not to mention later movies where they show how much he's worked on his leg, having multiple ends that he can switch between as needed, with a special attachment for Toothless's saddle and tail.
I think the "hopscotch" scene has the music because it's showing how not only do Hiccup and Toothless understand each other, but Hiccup also respects his wishes. Toothless isn't just a pet; he's a friend. By not stepping on the random lines, Hiccup is demonstrating that, and the music emphasizes the significance of it.

A really underrated part of HTTYD is the extremely creative and diverse dragon designs. They all fill the role and build of "classic" dragons, but also feel very specialized and well thought-out. Making dragons, probably the most overused fantasy creatures feel new and fresh is definately a huge accomplishment.
@@Evorexwolf The 3rd movie might not be the best movie, I still think it's nice that they ended it at the third one (not counting any series showing up afterwards as they're dubiously canon at best.) And even if it's very flawed there's still some very real care put into that movie so I still count it as part of my favourite movie franchise.
I love that they tackled mature themes in a kids' movie, without talking down to their target audience. I really loathe the logic that just because a work is aimed at children, it automatically has to be dumbed down or mediocre.
Honestly yeah. As a kid watching this when it came out, it taught me so much about compassion and realistic consequences, later going on to teach me a lot about love and grief, that my parents or "educational" kids shows never did

That's because it's not a kids' movie. It's a film aimed at the general audience with no particular target in mind. DreamWorks has always operated that way.
I really suggest to you pretty much any Dreamworks film from the HTTYD era and before. In the UK the word Dreamworks and also Aardman are basically synonymous with all age media with strong and often darker themes wrapped up in an animation and story style which means your kids can watch it too. Why watch Disney when you have stuff like this?
During the scene where Toothless makes a bunch of squiggles on the ground and Hiccup has to avoid stepping on the lines, I think Toothless was trying to draw Hiccup. He saw him doodling Toothless in the ground and thought "Cool!! I want to do the same for him." You can tell by Toothless looking at him, then putting the last bit of detail on the drawing. That scene is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful scenes in cinema. The music, the silent visual storytelling, all of it is just beautiful
Just a thought, toothless doesn't go on autopilot when he goes to the nest. They're surrounded by dragons at some point when they're flying, and i always felt like toothless was like "oh shit, act cool" and made look as hiccup and Astrid were his pray but therefore when they arrived he didn't drop them he hides immedialty
It was auto pilot. The alpha dragon has a hive mind/mind control effect on the other dragons. That is how they managed to use Toothless to find the island.
Though I do know it does have mind control powers, the red death always felt different from other alpha species. It always felt more like it’s using fear to control the other dragons rather than actual mind control. And I think that’s a shame, would be interesting to have different alphas have different abilities ways of ruling their nest. The bewilderbeast could have been mind control and the read death could have been through fear. Just something to make em different is all
Three things. First, How to Train Your Dragon is one of my favorite movies. Second, the scribble in the dirt that Toothless drew is actually a picture of Hiccup Picasso style. Third, the big titan of a dragon at the end is called a Red Death, which is only explained in the TV shows like HTTYD: Race to the Edge.

@@themysteriousone9973 Tho, lowkey, I always hated how the Alphas can basically mind control dragons after HTTY 2 (which is still my favorite work of series BTW). The Red Death controlled them through fear, and it was very obvious none of the dragons wanted that, but didn't know where else to go, whereas the Alpha just turns them into drones instead of controlling through a social hierarchy whether by fear or respect. I think it would've made the finale way better if leaned into a more believable natural order and social structure.
The ending wasn’t just bold, it was poetic. With Hiccup’s foot and Toothless’ tail, they are now both hobbled; they can function on their own to a limited degree, but both their handicaps disappear when they work together. A true partnership.

It's not like they were incompetent, they did a few good namechanges, Snotlout became Rotzbacke, Fishlegs Fischbein, Ruffnut and Tuffnut Raffnuss und Taffnuss, Hiccup Hicks, etc., but why did they ruin Stoick's name?
HTTYD is one of the few trilogy that ended when it needed too. Most media and shows would probably milk this till it dry but this trillogy was able to ended on an amazing note without feeling like it was overstaying it welcome.
I would agree with you if it weren't for all the half-baked spinoff shows. I only ever watched a handful of episodes and never liked them... I am glad the main series ended when it did though. Just hope they don't try and milk it later down the road like they're doing to Shrek rn..
Smth that I absolutely adored abt Httyd is actually that Hiccup lost his foot. He is an awesome character, and most disabeled characters are alwys portraied as helpless, or "useless" to the main plot, but with Hiccup its just: Yes he is missing a leg, yes he is still agile, fast and doing everything an able bodied person can do, what are you gonna do abt it?
Between this Coraline and the corpse bride I'm starting to think that somebody needs to teach Alex the difference between a "Kids Movie" and a "Family Movie" (or even maybe that not all animated movies are Kids movies) otherwise he's going to have an aneurysm if he ever watches a movie like Plague Dogs or Felidae. (On a more serious note sad and dark things are important for a child's development and can even be comforting to some)
Even if it is categorized as a "family movie" it's still a movie targeted at kids. Sure family movies can be a bit deeper or more intense, but they are mostly for kids. Also "kid's movie" is more of a broad term, which i assume is what he was going for. "This is a family movie?!" for example doesn't roll off the tongue as well as "This is a kid's movie?!"

its more like the culutre for kids movies back then was a LOT more mature than nowadays. Look at some older kids shows and cartoons, most of them where WAY deeper than current ones. For example Transformers Prime and Avatar the last airbender. Heck lets take a show like Ninjago which is still running, watch the whole thing and you can see how it went from a lot more serious back in the late 2000s, and early 2010s to a lot more lighthearted recently

Amphibia has a scene so dark in the season. 2 finale that Disney tried to cancel it. And Ninjago and avatar The last Airbender And gravity falls and Steven universe are still considered of our generation. (By the way, I'm a huge Ninjago fan. Who's your favorite?) Also Ninjago is still going and it's just got progressively darker. And that's not even mentioning Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio or Nimona or puss in Boots in the last wish. (Plus all of the animated movies that were definitely not made for kids such as stop motion and the house)

I mean, it tackles the whole idea that we ought to not judge a book by its cover and to be curious instead of judgement of others who are different from us. Fun fact: the northern and western islands of Scotland and some parts of the mainland were colonized by the Vikings from the 8th to 15th centuries so the adult's accents aren't as big a stretch as they seem 🤗 it's much weirder for the kids to sound North American, although the Vikings attempted a colony in Newfoundland too, so I guess make of that what you will?😅

Something about these movies that no one talks about is the shows inbetween. Each movie shows a stage of hiccups life, young teen, young adult, adult, but the SHOWS set inbetween really show his growth between these stages, and whilst not perfect, really bring together the universe and characters of the movies.
Not to mention that the coolest dragons and villains only appear in the shows and not the movies. I seriously don't remember the name of the villain from the third movie. I just call him "Wannabe Viggo".

Yeah, I avoided the shows for a long time because I was worried they'd suck or take away from the movies. Then a friend asked if I'd seen them, and said they were good, so I finally watched. It was definitely worth the time.
i own all the inbetween shows they are honest my favorite things to watch, Race to the Edge is so good i consider it more canon then the 2nd movie, the 3rd never happened in my opinion.

Another thing that makes HTTYD a top-tier franchise is its score. The composer did not have to go so hard for a family movie, but WOW did he! The first flight scene still makes me teary more than a decade later because of the music
The opening scene of the second movie with toothless and hiccup flying also hits hard. It's not quite as emotional, but more hype and just makes me feel like life is perfect
10:11 - That 'inspirational music', Alex, is 'Forbidden Friendship' and one of the most beautiful pieces of movie music I've ever heard. It's cautious, whisical, triumphant, and beautifully underlines the impossible friendship taking form.
Especially love that it's the same tune that played when Toothless had Hiccup cornered, except it was dark and foreboding there. It shows, musically, the true dynamic development in their friendship. Though the BEST use of that motif is during the first test flight scene, when they truly become one unit. I'm a 30 year old man and that scene when he throws the notes away and the music swells makes me tear up.
I had a few months in high school where I just stayed in my room when I wasn't in school watching this on repeat on a little portable DVD player (it was a rough time in my life). I'm not sure what happened, but on like the 70th watch, a switch flipped in me, and when they played that with him and Toothless free falling, catching, and really flying for the first time, I balled my eyes out. Now, every god dang time I hear that piece, I cry. It's been a decade. Still happens.
I thought it was insightful to have toothless very nearly kill hiccup after he cut him free. They did a very good job conveying the internal struggle ending in that scream and then running off. It was the perfect introduction to show the intelligence of the dragons. They accomplished so much with such a short scene.
My favorite thing about UA-cam videos about httyd is the comments. They always get flooded with people just giving the film the utmost praise and stressing how much of an impact it made on their lives. It just shows that not only is httyd one of the most respected and beloved film franchises to exist, but that the fans of the films are extremely dedicated and adore the franchise more than anything, and it just feels like a true moment of connection and community between so many different people who love these films. TLDR: httyd rules and I love the fandom ❤
I adored this movie so much growing up, and never lost my love for it. At my wedding, I walked down the aisle to the song “romantic flight” because of how much this series meant to me as a child.

Or it having close to the same impact on people. Yeah people will come back and talk about how good something was nearly every time he reviews something… but almost no one says “The Barbie movies changed my whole take on life” or “I used the barbie music at my wedding because of how much it meant to me growing up” or “the amazing composition of the music in Barbie is a beautiful storytelling element and a story of its own!” That was their point. This movie genuinely MADE childhoods and stayed just as beloved and just as watched into adulthood because of how artistically driven and universal it is. Like Ratatouille or Wall-E.
There is a good reason where I unironically tell people How To Train Your Dragon is my favourite movie even as I near my 30s. People look at me weird but this movie (and the rest of the trilogy) just has some of the absolute most incredible visuals, sound design, score and storytelling. I watch it at least once a year and cry at the "forbidden friendship" scene, it's so. Good.
I'm entering my 20's and How To Train Your Dragon still sits as my favorite movie franchise of all time. I'm planning to get a small tattoo inspired by it somewhere on my body.
Call the style ugly as much as you want, I just love the character of it. Toothless only looks like that to be as appealing to the audience as possible. Also the sounds he makes are a hybrid of cat, horse, cow, bear, a bunch of others and the sound designer Randy Thom. This was to create a wide range of emotion since he's such a big focus of the movie. I just love how much effort went into making this movie and the ways they went about it.
My favorite moment is when Hiccup was walking to the door with Toothless at the end of the movie. You can see his peg leg, and then Toothless’ tail sweeps into view, missing half its fin. It’s enough to make a grown man cry, and that’s OK
And before that when he was about to fall because he wasnt used to the prosthetic yet Toothless caught him, and they walked to the door together. I just cant with this movie I love it so much.
Oh come on. When toothless was drawing Hiccup it was the start of their freindship. The music in this scene is still one of the best scores from any movie ever to me.
HTTYD is literally the best kids movie trilogy, the soundtrack, the animation that improved with each movie, the character of the dragons, and the developing emotional maturity of each character, it's unmatched. I'm so obsessed with this franchise.
My head cannon is that all of the adults sound Scottish because the audiobooks are read by David Tennant doing his (real) most Scottish accent. They are a 10/10 by the way. My kids and I used to listen to the in the car on roadtrips.

Not having this available on (HBO) MAX from day one is such an idiot of a decision on Warner/DreamWorks' part as not having the extended LotR trilogy in their library.
Skrek was very deep too, it was about subverting expectations and going against the grain, an F you to beauty standards, how to have a heslthy long term relationship, compromise and sacrifice. Not judging a noook by its cover, the reality and effects of public scorn and judgment and to find self love and validation, the fear of fatherhood and parenthood ingeneral, how to appreciate your life when you hit a lull or midlife crisis...
Shrek is about an ogre who wants to be left alone but winds up getting followed by an annoying donkey and banging a fat girl while listening to Smash Mouth instead. It's sure as shit not about the fear of fatherhood lmao.
In my humble opinion, HTTYD is the best out of those movies from that era as the quality stayed pretty consistent throughout. There's also some foreshadowing I didn't realize as Hiccup has a scar on his chin in this movie. You can see in some angles that I love these movies, and the scores and music are great. I catch myself humming the main themes and stuff sometimes
HTTYD had two endings! One with Hiccup not losing his leg in addition to the ending they chose, and they showed the chosen ending to a test audience (parents of children with physical disabilities) and they thought it worked really well to have a hero with a disability because it was inspiring to young kids everywhere and shows representation they had not seen before. So they picked it. But they had a backup ending in case!
Dang, I’m glad they went with what they did! It makes the mirroring between hiccup and toothless complete and yeah is a great opportunity for representation!
Hiccup and Toothless perfectly compliment each other- each nearly kills the other, each is on the out and alone, and they can’t fly without the other- they even mirror in their amputations- they work amazingly together as two halves to one whole
They are also planning on making a live action version of this franchise, which I am extremely upset about. How to Train your Dragon is one of my favorite franchises, but I absolutely do not want to see it in live action. Why is animation respected only when it is no longer animated?!?!?!
I remember going to the movies with my mom - I think we were going to watch something like Shutter Island(?). I had already seen How to Train your Dragon and it was still in theatres. We got to the ticket line and there was an older sister trying to buy tickets for she and her little brother, who was disabled. Because she had her mom's credit card but not her mom's ID, the theatre was turning her away. I told my mom how incredible the movie was and how the main character ends up disabled by the end and my mom just went up to the ticket counter and said, "YOU NEED AN ID AND A CREDIT CARD?!? I'M BUYING THEIR TICKETS. LET THEM GO SEE THE MOVIE." I cried for a few because of how cool that was. I'm glad those siblings got to see this movie.
Not only was How to Train Your Dragon one of the last true family movies, but also contained great amount of epicness, comedy and drama, great for all ages.
Puss in Boots: the Last Wish is a great example of a more recent family film that actually touched on darker topics while being “for kids”. Dreamworks may have uneven output, but they’re still putting out some of the best animations in the industry!
HTTYD still remains as the best franchise ever made because it had three movies and two respectively animated series with multiple seasons that wrapped up the storyline perfectly. the last movie allowed the children, who have aged quite a bit from the first one, to fully realize that even though hiccup and toothless love each other unconditionally, there comes a time where they must part 😭 specifically for geographic and safety reasons. i find myself rewatching this franchise like every other day and i still love it so much

The shape closest to toothless is hiccup’s hand, his thumb and fingers basically around toothless’s head. The small circle next to the hand is his one of the eyes. Hiccup is standing on his own forehead, above the same eye. To the left of Hiccup is another eye, which leads into the nose.
I’ve always loved how they handled Hiccup loosing his leg like “yeah it happened” and movies on and not having like a huge character arc on how it affected him and what not.
tbf, in viking culture (at least in httyd) losing a body part in battle was seen as kind of like a badge of honor, so while he probably did deal with some trauma around it, his circumstances were such that there were positive connotations attached to it. like "dang you took down the red death, what a warrior!"
The weirdest part to me wasn't that most of them were Scottish, but that, for some reason, Hiccup and the other kids AREN'T Scottish. It's like they have to reach a certain age for the Scottish accent to kick in.
Heard somewhere that it separates the old generation and new generation, with the new bringing in new ideas that challenge the old views, in this case dragon riding. But i have no source, I just saw people talking about it
This is easily my favorite movie soundtrack. Ever. AND even though the books are so different from the films, David Tennant narrates the audiobooks and does such a stunning job.
An animation funfact: in 3D or CGI animation it’s very complicated to make a quadruped sit down (it has to do with rigging and heat mapping) but sometimes animators are very creative and think of some sort of shortcut like they did with Toothless, if you pay attention the scenes where he sits down he always sits on his tail as if it’s a chair, he sits like a biped
My son lost his leg to cancer as a teen about the same time the original movie came out. He picked up the nickname hiccup from the movie. Even as an adult sometimes it’s still special to just binge the trilogy or series.
Fun fact David Tennant plays Spitelout, Snotlout's dad, one of Stoick's right hand men. The characters position is shown during combative points in the movies, but he gets more lore in the tv show.

"I can show my face in public again!" 13:53 OK but seriously I don't think people give credit to how awful this dad was. I know he got better in the sequels but he was up there with Chicken Little's dad for this *entire* movie.
If you really think that your missing the point. He has some really heart to heart moments with his son. It might be annoying but he really did care always. And in the end when hiccup was knocked out, he repurposed the village to be dragon friendly. So not very accurate to say he was up their with chicken Littles dad.
Didn’t Little’s dad actively throw him under the bus at every opportunity? Stoic, by comparison, acknowledged that this lifestyle _really_ wasn’t geared for Hiccup, and tried from the beginning to keep him from being hurt by trying.
Fun Fact/True Story: This movie is why I ride motorcycles… I was obsessed with this movie as a preteen I’m a cat guy and because Toothless is so catlike, I desperately wanted my own dragon cat. I was in the car one day and we were stopped at a light next to a guy on a motorcycle (a person I recognize now to be a total noob and squid) and he was clicking through gears just like how Hiccup controls Toothless’ tail. I was like “Mom! What is up with that!?” and she explained that’s how you shift a motorcycle. I got good grades and that year my mom traded and worked stuff out to get me a small used 100cc 4 wheeler to learn to shift. I loved it. Moved up to a dirt bike and by 9th grade I was riding my all black Ninja 250 sport bike to school. I was hooked! That was a decade and a half ago and I’m 30, have lung cancer and I still ride my motorcycle and it feels just like flying! My motorcycle is like my own little dragon, we keep each other safe and alive out on the road… and whenever my bike acts up I say “Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile!” Lmao Honestly I don’t think I would have ever gotten into motorcycles without this movie and it brings me so much happiness and it’s my escape to cope with life… I don’t know what I’d be doing otherwise because I still can’t drive a manual car haha so I probably wouldn’t have ever learned to shift a motorcycle either. Hiccup made it look so cool and symbiotic that I desperately wanted to know what it was like! It feels so good to launch your bike, hit perfect shifts, shift your body weight into corners… etc. it genuinely feels like riding a living creature that you work together with. I got my Toothless and I’m so thankful for it. *About the noob/squid thing, I now know he was a noob because he was clicking through gears at a stop light looking for first gear or neutral. A squid is a term for irresponsible, untrained people who buy powerful sport bikes, don’t wear any protective gear and ride like buttholes and crash becoming meat crayons and “squids” because they flop across the street like a squid out of water. Gross but true… respect yourself and respect your motorcycle… wear your gear!
what i really love about this movie, is the lighting. I feel like so many 3d animated movies todau have such vibrant, in your face colours. This movie is way more dim, and looks much more like a real world where people live and have lived. it doesnt have the same plastic feeling as all 3d disney mvoies do, or current-day dreamworks movies

Top 3 3D animated movies. This, The Incredibles 1 and Kung Fu Panda 1. I use this movie all the time to teach students about story structure. The introduction is pretty much perfect. Establishes setting, main characters and sets the plot in motion in under 10 minutes. Also, the 'first flight' scene. Chills every time! Also acts like a 3-act story structure. 1. Establishing, Hiccup learning how to control Toothless' flight by following his cheatsheet. 2. Complication, cheatsheet flies off and he falls off Toothless towards certain death. 3. Resolution, toothless catches him but now Hiccup has to guide Toothless through the rocks using instinct so they both survive. Perfect 3 minute sequence.
I grew up with this trilogy. 1st film I’m 13 (Cusping 14) 2nd I’m 17 (cusping 18) 3rd I’m 22 (cusping 23) all different stages of life. 13 - finding yourself/coming of age 17-18 - college, facing more adult issues and your future 22-23 - graduation, realizing you will move away from friends and have to face full adulthood responsibilities

HTTYD has one of the most intricate scores ever: the first 10 min introduce *EVERY important theme for the entire movie* apart from Toothless’ theme (because he wasn’t introduced yet). Then there’s “Test Drive”, the theme for their first successful flight: it’s a mixture of Toothless’ and Hiccup’s theme because they’re finally working together as a team ❤ ~thanks to Sideways and his amazing essay 😊

This is one of my favorite series of all time. No joke, it was my obsession for a couple of years until my parents put a stop to it. It inspired me to learn how to play the violin more and now I can play almost the entire soundtrack perfectly.
The main score of the film playing during Toothless scribling made it way funnier in my opinion. It just keeps building and building as Toothless draws and then the scene pans out and you see that it's just a bunch of squiggly lines. Toothless then getting mad every time Hiccup stepped on one of the lines was both funny and sweet. He's seen Hiccup drawing all the time in his notebook and can tell how much it means to him, so that's why Toothless gets defensive about his own "drawing". Side note, bold movie by Alex to play portions of the films actual score. Hopefully, that won't lead to this being taken down.
This is probably the quickest I ever clicked on a vid by Alex...HTTYD is my favourite animation movie hands down...I've watched it so many times I can say every line of the movie, I know which scene each soundtrack plays at...This franchise was utter perfection in its execution, all the movies and the series together just all built on each other to make something awesome... Blasphemy that you haven't watched the how to train your dragon series until now. IMO, I think it's one of the best DreamWorks ever made. It also has a series that take place between the 1st and the 2nd movies. They are called (in order): Riders of Berk then Defenders of Berk then Race to the Edge. There are also UA-cam short videos that take place after the 3rd movie. Yes I'm a huge fan of HTTYD.
The line that sticks with me is this one. Stoic: (angry) THEY KILLED HUNDREDS OF US! Hiccup: (also angry) SO WE KILLED THOUSANDS OF THEM! Not sure why but it just sticks with me the most.
Yeah, especialy when we later learn WHY are they doing that - not for funzies or even for food (most dragons, as we see in the shows (which are VERY good, btw) prefer fish instead of sheep or goat), but just because they would literaly be killed if they didn´t.

It's absolutely hilarious how good the books are and how they only used the names, characters and setting for the movie. Only a lot of things are VERY heavily modified. Like, the adversion to dragons and the characteristics of a bunch of characters. I think the story in the books is at least as good, but in my (probably biased and nostalgic) opinion has a lot more charm because of the characters and how they interact. OG toothless is the best 😂

Also, showing fertility issues and passage of life on screen. Showing real life with real problems, on the one hand they were together for years happily married, on the other hand, they weren't able to fulfill all their dreams and hopes like having kids or going to that one place they dreamed of as kids. It makes you realize that you can have a happy life and be surrounded by loved ones but you'll never be able to have everything and there will always be some regret and sense of loss

Couple things that caught my eye, one about the movie and the other about a detail throughiht the series. First: Stoic doesn't hate his son. They address very early on, right after Stoic yells at Hiccup for royally messing uo at the start. Hiccup says to Gobber that his dad is disappointed because he doesn't look or act like a viking, which Gobner refutes saying "It's not so much what you look like, it's what's inside rhat he can't stand... The point is, stop trying so hard to be something you're not," to which Hiccup replies "I just wanna be one of you guys." Rhis is addressed a couple scenes later after Stoic gets everyone rallied to look for the nest. He's talking with Gobber, who suggests putting Hiccup in dragon training. His first reaction? "He'd be killed before you let the first dragon out of it's cage." He and Gobber go back and forth before Stoic gets to the root of the problem, at least for him. "Ever since I was a boy I knew what I was, what I had to become. Hiccup is not that boy." The thing to note with that last line is how Stoic moves and acts. Httyd has good dialogue, but one of the reasons that it stands out is that they were very good with body language and facial expression, especially for the time. Stoic looks at Gobber, and he looks scared when he says that Hiccup doesn't know who he is. He doesn't hate his son, he's scared because he doesn't understand hom and knows he's being ostracized. There is also some of his own pride mixed in there, don't get me wrong, but a large part of how he acts towards Hiccup is because he doesn't understand, and an equally large part is that he's too stubborn to listen (which is displayed in the "I hit a Night Fury" and "You're going to Dragon Training" scenes). It's a kind of important point, especially since he disowns Hiccup at one point only to take it back later. If that worry and lack of understanding had not been set up, it would be a completely unreasonable plot point to have Stoic apologize. It only works because it's clarified early on that Stoic loves Hiccup, he just fundamentally doesn't undersrand him. Now, thing two is much shorter. The first times we see Hiccup and Toothless flying together in every movie, they get separated. In New Tail, it's because Toothless flings him off, but the other movies they willingly start flying without each other. Personally, I think this is mostly because of the fall in Test Flight. Hiccup slips out if the saddle, sending him and Toothless plummeting. It was honestly luck that let them make it out of that alive, and you can bet it would motivate Hiccup to find a way for him and Toothless to keep flying if separated in the sky, since for the entire series up until the end they are largely reliant on each other to fly. I dunno, that's just a really cool detail to me.
The fact that the movies aged with its audience was great, we literally saw Hiccup become an adult with his own family when we ourselves entered adulthood. It respected its audience and they'll always have a fond place in my memory.
I. As a full grown adult woman. Tear up everytime I hear the HtTYD theme song. There’s just something about this series. It kills me in the best way. Please do the rest of them, pretty pretty please!
while I'm too old to claim that HTTYD was my childhood, I still love this series to bits! it's also one of the few children's movies which takes its audience seriously and trusts even the kids to understand the heavier themes. moreover they actually had the lead grow up during the series and become a leader and adult.

My mom pointed out, not only did Hiccup lose his foot, it's on the same side that he had the stirrup that controlled Toothless's tail, indicating that his foot got stuck when he fell, snapping his ankle beyond repair.
I was 15 in 2010, and that was the coolest story beat I'd ever heard.
that's not a bad theory. The older Vikings would have seen how badly mangled his foot was and amputated it. Only theory I've been hearing is that Toothless in desperation bit Hiccups foot too hard while trying to catch him.

What I love about this trilogy is that they actually let the kids grow up, and I as an audience member grew up alongside them. I feel like it's something rare with movies, like Despicable Me is NEVER going to let Agnes grow up.

As a child, I was really impressed by the decision to have Hiccup lose a leg in the fight with the dragon. They thought that it would be too dark for a childrens' film, but the test audience begged them to keep it, as it showed realistic consequences, plus Hiccup and Toothless were basically the same now.

Listen. There's a difference between a kid's movie and a family. Kids movie is like despicable me where there is a whole movie of just brainrout that 5 year olds can giggle on . But a franchise like How to train your dragon is a family movie . There is a real compelling story. With real emotions. And some muture themes . With real moral .
Kids movie - only for kids . Parents are gonna take there kids to the theatres to see the movie and just wait for the movie to wrap up and hope that there kids are having fun .
Family movie. A movie where the whole family can really have Fun together and some cries together.
Despicable Me had some nice heart. The first one at least, I can't speak for the other ones. Kinda sucks that the original movie got sullied by Facebook minion memes and sequels nobody seems to like.
The Despicable Me movies are definitely more in the family movie category. People just tend to think of them as less mature since they're comedies without some of the really heavy stuff we tend to see with Pixar and DreamWorks. But that doesn't mean they're not enjoyable for all ages. A kids movie would be more something like Sesame Street.

Partially agree: The first one definitely was a family movie, because it mainly revolved around a man learning to be a dad and three abandoned children finding a family. I loved that movie.
But then, the marketing team discovered the popularity of minion merch and increasingly abandoned content quality for funny gibberish. It’s become so oversaturated, I learned to dislike everything that has minions in/on it, because it’s simply too much and too constant. Didn’t see the latest movie, but feedback is definitely mixed.

What always impressed me about this series is Hiccup not only losing his leg, but it staying lost.
I don't know of any other series that does that.
Every one I can think of usually gives them the missing piece back magically, or at least covers it up.
In How To Train You Dragon though it's visible through the rest of the movies and even in the television series.
If you watch the series, you can even see the Hiccup almost constantly upgrading it (and Toothles´s fin too), which is VERY in character for him, as he is right from the beginning set up as inventor and tinkerer. Sometimes he even turns his peg leg into an advantage instead of handicap, like when he hides his sword there, so he appears unarmed to the enemies, only to later suprise them.
@@veronikamajerova4564 There was also both a moment where Toothless grabbed his leg and runs off, to later cut back to see it detached and hiccup is still sitting there waiting for him to notice. And a scene where he stepped into a bear trap and nothing happened because it was his metal leg.

Adventure Time had Finn lost his arm by the end of the series and kept it that way.
It was also utilized all the time. There were some times in the series with stuff that should have hurt Hiccup, but it hit his peg leg, or times when he would be running from something only for his leg to come off. Not to mention later movies where they show how much he's worked on his leg, having multiple ends that he can switch between as needed, with a special attachment for Toothless's saddle and tail.
I think the "hopscotch" scene has the music because it's showing how not only do Hiccup and Toothless understand each other, but Hiccup also respects his wishes. Toothless isn't just a pet; he's a friend. By not stepping on the random lines, Hiccup is demonstrating that, and the music emphasizes the significance of it.
They are not random lines, Toothless tried to draw Hiccup.

A really underrated part of HTTYD is the extremely creative and diverse dragon designs. They all fill the role and build of "classic" dragons, but also feel very specialized and well thought-out. Making dragons, probably the most overused fantasy creatures feel new and fresh is definately a huge accomplishment.
Maybe How to Train Your Dragon is a movie trilogy marketed for kids, but it's absolutely a trilogy for people of all ages. Beautiful films.

And even if it's very flawed there's still some very real care put into that movie so I still count it as part of my favourite movie franchise.
I love that they tackled mature themes in a kids' movie, without talking down to their target audience. I really loathe the logic that just because a work is aimed at children, it automatically has to be dumbed down or mediocre.

That's because it's not a kids' movie. It's a film aimed at the general audience with no particular target in mind. DreamWorks has always operated that way.
I really suggest to you pretty much any Dreamworks film from the HTTYD era and before. In the UK the word Dreamworks and also Aardman are basically synonymous with all age media with strong and often darker themes wrapped up in an animation and story style which means your kids can watch it too. Why watch Disney when you have stuff like this?
During the scene where Toothless makes a bunch of squiggles on the ground and Hiccup has to avoid stepping on the lines, I think Toothless was trying to draw Hiccup. He saw him doodling Toothless in the ground and thought "Cool!! I want to do the same for him." You can tell by Toothless looking at him, then putting the last bit of detail on the drawing. That scene is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful scenes in cinema. The music, the silent visual storytelling, all of it is just beautiful

@@themysteriousone9973 Tho, lowkey, I always hated how the Alphas can basically mind control dragons after HTTY 2 (which is still my favorite work of series BTW). The Red Death controlled them through fear, and it was very obvious none of the dragons wanted that, but didn't know where else to go, whereas the Alpha just turns them into drones instead of controlling through a social hierarchy whether by fear or respect. I think it would've made the finale way better if leaned into a more believable natural order and social structure.

The ending wasn’t just bold, it was poetic. With Hiccup’s foot and Toothless’ tail, they are now both hobbled; they can function on their own to a limited degree, but both their handicaps disappear when they work together. A true partnership.

HTTYD is one of the few trilogy that ended when it needed too. Most media and shows would probably milk this till it dry but this trillogy was able to ended on an amazing note without feeling like it was overstaying it welcome.

Smth that I absolutely adored abt Httyd is actually that Hiccup lost his foot. He is an awesome character, and most disabeled characters are alwys portraied as helpless, or "useless" to the main plot, but with Hiccup its just: Yes he is missing a leg, yes he is still agile, fast and doing everything an able bodied person can do, what are you gonna do abt it?
Between this Coraline and the corpse bride I'm starting to think that somebody needs to teach Alex the difference between a "Kids Movie" and a "Family Movie" (or even maybe that not all animated movies are Kids movies) otherwise he's going to have an aneurysm if he ever watches a movie like Plague Dogs or Felidae.

Even if it is categorized as a "family movie" it's still a movie targeted at kids. Sure family movies can be a bit deeper or more intense, but they are mostly for kids. Also "kid's movie" is more of a broad term, which i assume is what he was going for. "This is a family movie?!" for example doesn't roll off the tongue as well as "This is a kid's movie?!"

its more like the culutre for kids movies back then was a LOT more mature than nowadays. Look at some older kids shows and cartoons, most of them where WAY deeper than current ones. For example Transformers Prime and Avatar the last airbender. Heck lets take a show like Ninjago which is still running, watch the whole thing and you can see how it went from a lot more serious back in the late 2000s, and early 2010s to a lot more lighthearted recently

Fun fact: the northern and western islands of Scotland and some parts of the mainland were colonized by the Vikings from the 8th to 15th centuries so the adult's accents aren't as big a stretch as they seem 🤗 it's much weirder for the kids to sound North American, although the Vikings attempted a colony in Newfoundland too, so I guess make of that what you will?😅

Something about these movies that no one talks about is the shows inbetween. Each movie shows a stage of hiccups life, young teen, young adult, adult, but the SHOWS set inbetween really show his growth between these stages, and whilst not perfect, really bring together the universe and characters of the movies.
I did enjoy the shows quite a bit. Did kind of wish they had a permanent Dagger death but I did like the character.
Not to mention that the coolest dragons and villains only appear in the shows and not the movies. I seriously don't remember the name of the villain from the third movie. I just call him "Wannabe Viggo".

Yeah, I avoided the shows for a long time because I was worried they'd suck or take away from the movies. Then a friend asked if I'd seen them, and said they were good, so I finally watched. It was definitely worth the time.
i own all the inbetween shows they are honest my favorite things to watch, Race to the Edge is so good i consider it more canon then the 2nd movie, the 3rd never happened in my opinion.

10:11 - That 'inspirational music', Alex, is 'Forbidden Friendship' and one of the most beautiful pieces of movie music I've ever heard. It's cautious, whisical, triumphant, and beautifully underlines the impossible friendship taking form.
Especially love that it's the same tune that played when Toothless had Hiccup cornered, except it was dark and foreboding there. It shows, musically, the true dynamic development in their friendship.
Though the BEST use of that motif is during the first test flight scene, when they truly become one unit. I'm a 30 year old man and that scene when he throws the notes away and the music swells makes me tear up.

I'm not sure what happened, but on like the 70th watch, a switch flipped in me, and when they played that with him and Toothless free falling, catching, and really flying for the first time, I balled my eyes out. Now, every god dang time I hear that piece, I cry. It's been a decade. Still happens.

I thought it was insightful to have toothless very nearly kill hiccup after he cut him free. They did a very good job conveying the internal struggle ending in that scream and then running off. It was the perfect introduction to show the intelligence of the dragons. They accomplished so much with such a short scene.
My favorite thing about UA-cam videos about httyd is the comments. They always get flooded with people just giving the film the utmost praise and stressing how much of an impact it made on their lives. It just shows that not only is httyd one of the most respected and beloved film franchises to exist, but that the fans of the films are extremely dedicated and adore the franchise more than anything, and it just feels like a true moment of connection and community between so many different people who love these films.

Yeah people will come back and talk about how good something was nearly every time he reviews something… but almost no one says “The Barbie movies changed my whole take on life” or “I used the barbie music at my wedding because of how much it meant to me growing up” or “the amazing composition of the music in Barbie is a beautiful storytelling element and a story of its own!” That was their point. This movie genuinely MADE childhoods and stayed just as beloved and just as watched into adulthood because of how artistically driven and universal it is. Like Ratatouille or Wall-E.
There is a good reason where I unironically tell people How To Train Your Dragon is my favourite movie even as I near my 30s. People look at me weird but this movie (and the rest of the trilogy) just has some of the absolute most incredible visuals, sound design, score and storytelling. I watch it at least once a year and cry at the "forbidden friendship" scene, it's so. Good.

HTTYD is literally the best kids movie trilogy, the soundtrack, the animation that improved with each movie, the character of the dragons, and the developing emotional maturity of each character, it's unmatched. I'm so obsessed with this franchise.
My head cannon is that all of the adults sound Scottish because the audiobooks are read by David Tennant doing his (real) most Scottish accent. They are a 10/10 by the way. My kids and I used to listen to the in the car on roadtrips.
And David also got a cameo with a character, I think Snotlouts' father?? (Also loved the books/ audio books when I was younger)

In my humble opinion, HTTYD is the best out of those movies from that era as the quality stayed pretty consistent throughout. There's also some foreshadowing I didn't realize as Hiccup has a scar on his chin in this movie. You can see in some angles that I love these movies, and the scores and music are great. I catch myself humming the main themes and stuff sometimes

HTTYD had two endings! One with Hiccup not losing his leg in addition to the ending they chose, and they showed the chosen ending to a test audience (parents of children with physical disabilities) and they thought it worked really well to have a hero with a disability because it was inspiring to young kids everywhere and shows representation they had not seen before. So they picked it. But they had a backup ending in case!
Dang, I’m glad they went with what they did! It makes the mirroring between hiccup and toothless complete and yeah is a great opportunity for representation!
Hiccup and Toothless perfectly compliment each other- each nearly kills the other, each is on the out and alone, and they can’t fly without the other- they even mirror in their amputations- they work amazingly together as two halves to one whole
They are also planning on making a live action version of this franchise, which I am extremely upset about. How to Train your Dragon is one of my favorite franchises, but I absolutely do not want to see it in live action. Why is animation respected only when it is no longer animated?!?!?!

I remember going to the movies with my mom - I think we were going to watch something like Shutter Island(?). I had already seen How to Train your Dragon and it was still in theatres. We got to the ticket line and there was an older sister trying to buy tickets for she and her little brother, who was disabled. Because she had her mom's credit card but not her mom's ID, the theatre was turning her away. I told my mom how incredible the movie was and how the main character ends up disabled by the end and my mom just went up to the ticket counter and said, "YOU NEED AN ID AND A CREDIT CARD?!? I'M BUYING THEIR TICKETS. LET THEM GO SEE THE MOVIE."
I cried for a few because of how cool that was. I'm glad those siblings got to see this movie.
Not only was How to Train Your Dragon one of the last true family movies, but also contained great amount of epicness, comedy and drama, great for all ages.

Puss in Boots: the Last Wish is a great example of a more recent family film that actually touched on darker topics while being “for kids”. Dreamworks may have uneven output, but they’re still putting out some of the best animations in the industry!
HTTYD still remains as the best franchise ever made because it had three movies and two respectively animated series with multiple seasons that wrapped up the storyline perfectly. the last movie allowed the children, who have aged quite a bit from the first one, to fully realize that even though hiccup and toothless love each other unconditionally, there comes a time where they must part 😭 specifically for geographic and safety reasons. i find myself rewatching this franchise like every other day and i still love it so much

I’ve always loved how they handled Hiccup loosing his leg like “yeah it happened” and movies on and not having like a huge character arc on how it affected him and what not.
tbf, in viking culture (at least in httyd) losing a body part in battle was seen as kind of like a badge of honor, so while he probably did deal with some trauma around it, his circumstances were such that there were positive connotations attached to it. like "dang you took down the red death, what a warrior!"

This is easily my favorite movie soundtrack. Ever. AND even though the books are so different from the films, David Tennant narrates the audiobooks and does such a stunning job.
An animation funfact: in 3D or CGI animation it’s very complicated to make a quadruped sit down (it has to do with rigging and heat mapping) but sometimes animators are very creative and think of some sort of shortcut like they did with Toothless, if you pay attention the scenes where he sits down he always sits on his tail as if it’s a chair, he sits like a biped
My son lost his leg to cancer as a teen about the same time the original movie came out. He picked up the nickname hiccup from the movie. Even as an adult sometimes it’s still special to just binge the trilogy or series.
This trilogy isn't for kids, it's for families. Kids can enjoy it, but adults will understand it

Fun Fact/True Story: This movie is why I ride motorcycles…
I was obsessed with this movie as a preteen I’m a cat guy and because Toothless is so catlike, I desperately wanted my own dragon cat. I was in the car one day and we were stopped at a light next to a guy on a motorcycle (a person I recognize now to be a total noob and squid) and he was clicking through gears just like how Hiccup controls Toothless’ tail. I was like “Mom! What is up with that!?” and she explained that’s how you shift a motorcycle. I got good grades and that year my mom traded and worked stuff out to get me a small used 100cc 4 wheeler to learn to shift. I loved it. Moved up to a dirt bike and by 9th grade I was riding my all black Ninja 250 sport bike to school. I was hooked!
That was a decade and a half ago and I’m 30, have lung cancer and I still ride my motorcycle and it feels just like flying! My motorcycle is like my own little dragon, we keep each other safe and alive out on the road… and whenever my bike acts up I say “Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile!” Lmao
Honestly I don’t think I would have ever gotten into motorcycles without this movie and it brings me so much happiness and it’s my escape to cope with life… I don’t know what I’d be doing otherwise because I still can’t drive a manual car haha so I probably wouldn’t have ever learned to shift a motorcycle either. Hiccup made it look so cool and symbiotic that I desperately wanted to know what it was like! It feels so good to launch your bike, hit perfect shifts, shift your body weight into corners… etc. it genuinely feels like riding a living creature that you work together with. I got my Toothless and I’m so thankful for it.
*About the noob/squid thing, I now know he was a noob because he was clicking through gears at a stop light looking for first gear or neutral. A squid is a term for irresponsible, untrained people who buy powerful sport bikes, don’t wear any protective gear and ride like buttholes and crash becoming meat crayons and “squids” because they flop across the street like a squid out of water. Gross but true… respect yourself and respect your motorcycle… wear your gear!

I use this movie all the time to teach students about story structure. The introduction is pretty much perfect. Establishes setting, main characters and sets the plot in motion in under 10 minutes.
Also, the 'first flight' scene. Chills every time! Also acts like a 3-act story structure.
1. Establishing, Hiccup learning how to control Toothless' flight by following his cheatsheet.
2. Complication, cheatsheet flies off and he falls off Toothless towards certain death.
3. Resolution, toothless catches him but now Hiccup has to guide Toothless through the rocks using instinct so they both survive.

4:56 interestingly enough, there were 'Scottish' vikings. Though technically speaking Scotland as a country didn't exist yet the Norse settled much of that area during their golden ages and English has a lot of Norse influence.
This is one of my favorite series of all time. No joke, it was my obsession for a couple of years until my parents put a stop to it. It inspired me to learn how to play the violin more and now I can play almost the entire soundtrack perfectly.
The main score of the film playing during Toothless scribling made it way funnier in my opinion. It just keeps building and building as Toothless draws and then the scene pans out and you see that it's just a bunch of squiggly lines. Toothless then getting mad every time Hiccup stepped on one of the lines was both funny and sweet. This is probably the quickest I ever clicked on a vid by Alex...HTTYD is my favourite animation movie hands down...I've watched it so many times I can say every line of the movie, I know which scene each soundtrack plays at...This franchise was utter perfection in its execution, all the movies and the series together just all built on each other to make something awesome... I hope you end up watching the rest of movies, not necessarily for video purposes but just to enjoy...Anyways thanks for vid

Blasphemy that you haven't watched the how to train your dragon series until now. IMO, I think it's one of the best DreamWorks ever made. It also has a series that take place between the 1st and the 2nd movies. They are called (in order): Riders of Berk then Defenders of Berk then Race to the Edge. There are also UA-cam short videos that take place after the 3rd movie.

The line that sticks with me is this one.

Yeah, especialy when we later learn WHY are they doing that - not for funzies or even for food (most dragons, as we see in the shows (which are VERY good, btw) prefer fish instead of sheep or goat), but just because they would literaly be killed if they didn´t.

It's absolutely hilarious how good the books are and how they only used the names, characters and setting for the movie. Only a lot of things are VERY heavily modified. Like, the adversion to dragons and the characteristics of a bunch of characters.
I think the story in the books is at least as good, but in my (probably biased and nostalgic) opinion has a lot more charm because of the characters and how they interact. OG toothless is the best 😂

Pixar's "Up" is on par... You have a childhood hero who turned out to be a murderer and a showcase of emotional challenges that kids with divorced parents face.
Also, showing fertility issues and passage of life on screen. Showing real life with real problems, on the one hand they were together for years happily married, on the other hand, they weren't able to fulfill all their dreams and hopes like having kids or going to that one place they dreamed of as kids. It makes you realize that you can have a happy life and be surrounded by loved ones but you'll never be able to have everything and there will always be some regret and sense of loss

Your video got me wanting to rewatch the trilogy and I forgot how much I loved this franchise. The music is beautiful and the bond between Hiccup and Toothless is amazingly shown in multiple ways to show that they see themselves in each other

Couple things that caught my eye, one about the movie and the other about a detail throughiht the series.
First: Stoic doesn't hate his son. They address very early on, right after Stoic yells at Hiccup for royally messing uo at the start. Hiccup says to Gobber that his dad is disappointed because he doesn't look or act like a viking, which Gobner refutes saying "It's not so much what you look like, it's what's inside rhat he can't stand... The point is, stop trying so hard to be something you're not," to which Hiccup replies "I just wanna be one of you guys."
Rhis is addressed a couple scenes later after Stoic gets everyone rallied to look for the nest. He's talking with Gobber, who suggests putting Hiccup in dragon training. His first reaction? "He'd be killed before you let the first dragon out of it's cage." He and Gobber go back and forth before Stoic gets to the root of the problem, at least for him. "Ever since I was a boy I knew what I was, what I had to become. Hiccup is not that boy."
The thing to note with that last line is how Stoic moves and acts. Httyd has good dialogue, but one of the reasons that it stands out is that they were very good with body language and facial expression, especially for the time. Stoic looks at Gobber, and he looks scared when he says that Hiccup doesn't know who he is. He doesn't hate his son, he's scared because he doesn't understand hom and knows he's being ostracized. There is also some of his own pride mixed in there, don't get me wrong, but a large part of how he acts towards Hiccup is because he doesn't understand, and an equally large part is that he's too stubborn to listen (which is displayed in the "I hit a Night Fury" and "You're going to Dragon Training" scenes).
It's a kind of important point, especially since he disowns Hiccup at one point only to take it back later. If that worry and lack of understanding had not been set up, it would be a completely unreasonable plot point to have Stoic apologize. It only works because it's clarified early on that Stoic loves Hiccup, he just fundamentally doesn't undersrand him.
Now, thing two is much shorter. The first times we see Hiccup and Toothless flying together in every movie, they get separated. In New Tail, it's because Toothless flings him off, but the other movies they willingly start flying without each other. Personally, I think this is mostly because of the fall in Test Flight. Hiccup slips out if the saddle, sending him and Toothless plummeting. It was honestly luck that let them make it out of that alive, and you can bet it would motivate Hiccup to find a way for him and Toothless to keep flying if separated in the sky, since for the entire series up until the end they are largely reliant on each other to fly. I dunno, that's just a really cool detail to me.
The fact that the movies aged with its audience was great, we literally saw Hiccup become an adult with his own family when we ourselves entered adulthood. It respected its audience and they'll always have a fond place in my memory.
I remember Hiccup being my animated crush, then sitting down to movie #3 and going "Oh boy he aged with me" 👀😂

Okay I will admit that the art in the first book wasn't very good.
while I'm too old to claim that HTTYD was my childhood, I still love this series to bits! it's also one of the few children's movies which takes its audience seriously and trusts even the kids to understand the heavier themes. moreover they actually had the lead grow up during the series and become a leader and adult.
