Godox VL150 Review | PRO LED Light at a BUDGET Price (Plus VL200 & VL300 Comparison)

  • In this video, I review the Godox VL150, which may be the best budget LED video light available, and performs similarly to its more expensive "professional-grade" counterparts. I also compare the Godox VL150 to the bigger and brighter Godox VL200 and VL300.
    The Godox VL150 is arguably the best alternative to the Aputure 120D II and Aputure 300D II, especially if budget is a deciding factor.
    The build quality, brightness, color accuracy, and features of the Godox VL150 make it one of the best value lights you can buy, and a choice you won't regret for filmmaking, interviews, and UA-cam.
    There are some very minor downsides compared to some other lights, including a lack of built in special effects, but the cost savings are well worth it (in my opinion).
    I think the biggest consideration when comparing the VL150 to other continuous lights is whether a different series of Godox lights (SL, SL II, FV, UL) might be a better fit for your specific workflow.

      I have multiple copies of each light, and all of mine measured VERY similarly.
      The VL is "most accurate" because it had the least amount of Magenta tint, but it's nothing more than a variance in manufacturing rather than a difference between the series of lights.
      We're talking a difference of .1-.2 CRI. The TLCI of all 3 lights was the same. The TM-30 of all 3 lights was the same. The SSI of the VL lights was 73 vs 72 on the SL II and UL.
      The biggest difference was that the SL150W II was farther off from 5600K than the VL and UL, but still within 200K (5759K to be exact).
      I'm not sure how Gerald measured, I'm assuming he actually measured even though you said he "believes", but there are some other things to keep in mind.
      My measurements were all taken with the Sekonic C-800, which is the standard when it comes to measuring brightness and color accuracy. The important thing to remember is that there is variance between individual units of the same exact light, so even if he measured his with the same tools, we could get slightly different results
      I have a tool you can use to compare all/most of these lights using real-world measurements, not manufacturer specs, here: newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=Godox+UL150&light2=Godox+VL150
      I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions, or jump on my Discord server and we can chat directly: discord.gg/4VsVJQ

      Testing like that is “mostly” accurate, but also subject to the interpretation of the camera used.
      Also, using a modifier changes the color and accuracy of your lights, so it’s not a good way to test a lights pure capabilities in my opinion.
      The Sekonic C-800 is industry standard for testing light brightness and accuracy with all the major color rendering indices (CRI, TLCI, TM-30, SSI). I use it to test all my lights with their “bare bulb” so everything is apples to apples.
      Most importantly, testing 1 of each model may not be representative of the line as a whole, because individual lights vary due to manufacturing variance, so to get a true comparison of each series of lights, you’d have to test a sampling of multiple units. I typically test a few of each and input the averages or median results into my light comparison tool.
      All that said, the differences between ALL the new 150 watt Godox lights is so tiny I don’t think anyone should choose specific lights based on that, but instead for the other unique features each has.
      Hope that helps :)

    I just bought the VL300 a few months ago. Great review and I concur with your findings. They are excellent lights, very powerful for the money. Slight Magenta bias on my VL300 but easily dialed out in color correction and as it ages, COB lights bias more and more green so at some point, my VL300 will look perfect as far as color accuracy. The Bowens mount low cost Chinese Parabolic softboxes are an incredible value and work very well with the VL lights. I plan on buying two VL150s to round out my kit. I like the Aputures too but in this time of job cancellations and being unsure about production for the next year, it made sense to save $350.00 over buying the Aputure C300d MKII.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому

      Thanks, glad you liked the video. And you are 100% right about the tint/bias, but that should even out, and adding diffusion changes the CCT and tint a lot anyways, so there's plenty of outside factors that'll change your light since almost no one uses them bare bulb.
      And on a budget, the VL series is almost impossible to beat, especially since the VL150 is brighter than the Aputure 300d II, and the VL300 is a full stop brighter than that.

    i looked at your comparison chart for the vl150 and the aputure ls 60x and the lux was the same. is the 60w aputure actually as bright as the 150w godox ?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому

      Yes, because the 60x has a much tighter beam angle of 45 degrees versus the VL150 at 120 degrees. This is good in many cases, but once you add a softbox, it neutralizes the focusing lens for the most part, and the 60d/x becomed as bright in a softbox as most other 60 watt lights.

    • @NewLayer

    Hey J.T. awesome review, really helpful. I have two questions that don't seem to have been asked yet in the comments:
    - Since the spigot is tilted, is there any risk that it might break if I always keep a heavy softbox (like an Aputure Light Dome II) attached to the light?
    - Once the fan kicks in, is the noise constant or does it become louder as the light gets hotter/brighter?

    Alright good sir what is your recommendation for a complete light setup for interview/documentary and some product videos in the Godox lights? How many lights do we actually need for professional results and which lights ex. 300 or 150? A video of how to set this up would be awesome. Thanks for the great content 👍

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому +5

      I would recommend at least 2 lights for interviews. With those + a reflector, you can do a lot. A 3rd light would be useful to light the background sometimes, but you can make do without it pretty easily.
      Indoors, a couple of VL150s should be totally sufficient, one in a big soft box as a key light, and the other with the stock reflector or smaller softbox as a back/hair light. You can use the reflector to fill in the dark side of the face if necessary.
      It would be helpful to have some pocket lights for colored accents and practical lighting in the frame in the background as well. I'll be doing a video comparing almost 20 pocket lights in the near future, so watch out for that one!
      I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other specific questions.

    love your clear video's! im struggling about chosing between the SL60W or the VL150. main reason is money. But seeing that the VL150 is really kind of a flagship spotlight compared to the meh SL60W i think spending the extra bit of money is worth it well.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  4 роки тому +1

      You're welcome, I'm glad you find them useful.
      The SL60W truly is a tight budget light. You can make it work in most situations indoors, but 150 watts just opens up a ton more flexibility to shoot at lower ISOs, smaller apertures, or with bigger modifiers. I don't think you'd ever regret buying the VL150, but you might regret the SL60W if you find yourself in a spot where you need more brightness.

    • @NeilSnapePhotography
      @NeilSnapePhotography 3 роки тому +1

      I have 3 SL60w (fan modded) and have my second (first one was early production and was returned) FV200W. The color is much better in my opinion with the newer lights, FV FL, SLII. I am used to the color accuracy of flash, and no LEDs I have used can match that anyway. The light intensity vs cost of the new Good is impressive. The FV 200 I have will be typically used in a big octabox or through a scrim. The new faceted reflectors are ideal for this.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому

      @@NeilSnapePhotography From my measurements, the color accuracy on the newer lights might be marginally better, but the old lights are still very good newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare
      The main thing with the newer lights is that they are closer to 5600K, whereas the original SL series has a bit more variation.
      All in all, Godox makes some killer lights for the price :)

    • @NeilSnapePhotography
      @NeilSnapePhotography 3 роки тому +1

      @@NewLayer The real test is take three lights and place an object in front that will have defined shadows. Set the Lum. to about equal or if the power is the same all set to the same. Look at the shadow zone for coloration. White point, is a correlated balance which tells only a small part of a story. Variables such as R9 which you measure, tells more. Yet variations between lights makes for multiplied offsets seen in the shadows. Color correction before grading with Godox or other LEDs doesn't nail color in my opinion as would tungsten or daylight. You can however make color correction easier by color matching in Davinci with an X-Rite CC Passport or CC chart FWIW.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому

      @@NeilSnapePhotography Yep, if you're in need of color that accurate, then would definitely want to have multiple steps in your setup.
      You would use a spectrometer to set your light color temperatures (if they are adjustable) + add necessary gels, then create a custom white balance in camera, and then finally use an X-Rite or other Color Chart to automatically correct in post.

    Great review. I'm considering the VL150 and the Forza 60(b). Which one do you prefer? There isn't a comparison of both on UA-cam yet. I'm going to use it as soft light at interviews and am planning to use it for product shoots/commercials.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  4 роки тому

      From a strictly brightness standpoint, the VL150 is about 1 1/3 of a stop brighter than the Forza 60. The Forza 60B is bi-color, and about one stop dimmer than the regular Forza 60, so significantly dimmer than the VL150.
      I have also found that the Godox lights have much better color accuracy. You can compare the VL150 and the regular Forza 60 (and other lights) here: newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=Nanlite+Forza+60&light2=Godox+VL150
      You probably have not seen a comparison of those lights because the Forza 60 is really a competitor to the Godox SL60W.
      I would highly recommend the VL150 especially if you’ll be using it for interviews as a soft source, because you will need the extra brightness. Hope that helps.

      Videographers typically work around 1/50 second, f/5.6+, ISO400-1600 or higher, while a lot of photographers want 1/125 second, f/8, ISO 100, which would be blindingly brighter as a continuous light.

      Fortunately, there are plenty of things comparable to the Light Domes :)
      But, I typically recommend collapsible beauty dishes for a couple reasons. They are half the depth of parabolic softboxes so lighter weight overall, and less front heavy/tippy on a light stand. Since they are smaller, you can fit them into tighter spaces to get really soft light anywhere. If you're using the front diffusion, you'll get the same quality of light from them.
      The Glow EZ Lock ones are my favorites, and come in a few sizes (and either white or silver-lined):

      geni.us/glowbeautydish34silver
      geni.us/glowbeautydish42silver
      Glow also makes Parabolic softboxes if you prefer those.
      I also really like the parabolic softboxes from NiceFoto. They are similar to others, but are much lighter, so easier to work with, and come with 2 layers of diffusion, a grid, and a bag, and come in 4 sizes:
      geni.us/nicefotosoftbox60cm

      I just did a video on the new ML60, which is a super portable, battery capable version of the SL60W, with some other upgrades: ua-cam.com/video/GHiMqZ9oiQM/v-deo.html
      That's definitely a good choice, but has a few things to keep in mind, mostly that it's not a native Bowens mount.
      The SL60W is not a bad choice either, but the main things with that light is that the fan is louder, it doesn't have a battery option, and it doesn't come with a case.
      Unfortunately, neither of those uses the same remote as the VL series either, so another VL150 is always an option.
      Alternatively, you could get the Godox LC500R RGB tube light, which I cover a bit in this video: ua-cam.com/video/7vLCSmz-wKw/v-deo.html

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому

      Both lights are essentially identical in brightness and color accuracy, but there are a few practical differences:
      SL150W II - Only the head unit + 1 cord, has built-in FX, has a fan-off/silent mode (limited to ~36% total brightness), doesn't include a case, doesn't support V-mount
      VL150 - Comes with a case, supports v-mount natively (which means you have the head unit + controller + AC adapter + 2 cords), fan turns on/off automatically when the light gets too warm
      I hope that helps :)

      Although the Aputure lights are higher wattage, they are less bright per watt than Godox lights. They do this to maximize LED life span and color accuracy, but the difference in my opinion is negligible.
      The 300d is around the same brightness as the 150 watt or 200 watt Godox lights, so you'll definitely be able to get the same results!

      I’ve got some lighting setup tutorials as well if you’re into that. Really, all COBs work the same if you add the same diffusion, so the things that matter are in my opinion are the technical things like fan noise, output, and color accuracy. Then there’s all the upgrades like v-mount support, wireless control, etc.

    Loved the video! Question... I used an Aputure 120 and 300 on someone else's shoot. Both were great but the 300 was significantly stronger. Most people in these comments mention interview setups but I'll mostly be using it for movies and random commercial work. I typically use several small dracast lights and have been searching for a really stout light to use for exterior night shoots where we need moonlight or possibly to simulate strong sunlight coming in through a window for day shoots, etc.
    Do you think the Godox 300 is strong enough to pull that off? I know it's not going to be a super expensive "bright as the sun" type light but I'm wondering if it will be an inexpensive option to get me in the ballpark for those type purposes. I assume the 150 won't be strong enough for that. Maybe having one of each would come in handy.
    Follow up. Are the Godox 150 and 200 close enough in power that it makes sense to go with the cheaper one if you plan to also get the 300 model? Thanks so much for any thoughts!

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому +3

      The Godox VL300 is actually brighter than the Aputure 300d II, and is the brightest affordable COB you can buy. The Nanlite Forza 500 is brighter, as well as the Aputure 600 Pro, but those are significantly more expensive.
      Any of the 150-300 watt lights will work well for moonlight at night (I've done it at just 5% power with the stock reflector), and the VL300 + stock reflector should be a good choice for daylight.
      And you are spot on. If you are getting the VL300 + 1 other light, I'd get the VL150 to save a little money since it is so close in brightness to the VL200, and uses just 1 V-mount battery instead of needing 2 which is nice.

      Happy to help.
      The VL200 is heavier duty/more professional and natively support v-mount batteries. It also comes with a carrying case. I will say I recommend the VL150 instead of the 200. The 150 only needs 1 v-mount battery while the 200 and 300 need 2. The 200 is only 1/3-1/2 stop brighter, so it's not a big difference. So I usually say get the 150 or 300 and skip the 200.
      The Amaran 200x is bi-color, and has Sidus Link mobile app control which is really nice.
      Those are the main differences, so whatever is most important to you + current prices should help you decide :)

    I’m looking into buying one of the continuous lights for food photography. and maybe video too at some point. I’ll then definitely will need another one for the hair line etc... but for now I’m not sure whether i should go for one of the 150s/200s or just a simple one like the sl60. It’ll be for basic layouts and shoots on the table with a softbox next to it. Any advice?:)
    I know that flashes would probably be better suited and cheaper. But continuous light is just way more comfortable when adjusting the layout and correcting things like reflections in spoons, glassware and so on.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  4 роки тому +2

      You are 100% right about it being easier to get the lighting "right" with continuous lights. You might also consider flashes with built-in modeling lamps.
      But, continuous lights can still work great. I would highly recommend a 150 watt light over the 60 watt, simply because you'll probably want to shoot at ISO 100, and moving into smaller apertures like f/5.6-f/11 to get more of your scenes in focus. At those settings, even with a 150 watt light, you'll be shooting some slow shutter speeds between 1/30 and even 1 second.
      With all that said, I would think about the FV150 and FV200. They have some flash functionality built-in, so when you need a bit of extra power (around 1-2 full stops), you can do that, but use the full 150-200 watt power for modeling lights and video.
      If you haven't seen it yet, watch my review on the FV200. For food/inanimate object photography, I think they are the perfect lights: ua-cam.com/video/XbzPndcSKbI/v-deo.html

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому +1

      It should work yes. V-mounts are 14.4-14.8V, NP-F are 7.2-7.4V, but like you said, with a dual NP-F to V-mount adapter plate, you'll double the voltage and bring it up to the proper level.
      NP-F are built for smaller electronics, so they aren't ideal for bigger lights like this, but I totally understand that v-mounts are very expensive.

      There is only about a 1/3 stop to 1/2 stop difference between the 200 and 300, so it's not all that much. Although, if you plan to use it outdoors, especially for a full body shot, the 300 is probably actually worth it in your case in my opinion.

      What makes you say that? I have tested multiple of each light and they go back and forth on which is "best" given which specific unit is tested. Any differences you see mentioned in other videos are just manufacturing variance, not one model of light being better than the other.
      You can see the measured stats here: newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=Godox+UL150&light2=Godox+VL150
      The only light that is slightly different is the VL300, I believe because they get slightly worse color accuracy by pushing the LED harder for max brightness, or by using a different COB for max brightness.

      I would suggest the 150 or 300 and skip the 200. The 200 requires 2 v-mount batteries while the 150 only needs 1, and the 200 is only 1/3 stop brighter. The 300 requires 2 batteries also, but is 1 full stop brighter than the 150.
      With that said, a 150 watt light is great for video with something like a 36" softbox, as long as it's 5-10 feet from your subject max. Video is typically shot around ISO 400, f/4, and 1/50 second shutter speed, whereas photography usually needs more light for lower ISO, faster shutter speed, or smaller aperture. So, it depends what settings you want to use for photography. If you can afford it, I would recommend a VL300 because the extra power will come in handy for the photography side of things.
      Hope that helps!

      The SL II, FV, VL, and UL lights I have (which is multiple of many models) and have measured are all in the same arena. I think (and it's only an assumption), that all the new 150 watt lights use the same COB chip, but I don't know for sure.

      All my measurements are taken bare bulb at 1m, so when I compare lights, it's always apples to apples. You can compare them side by side using my tool here: newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=Godox+VL150&light2=Godox+VL200

      @@NewLayer I see, that's without reflector. I was looking at the Pixapro Led200b MKIII and they advertise 16.000lux at 1 meter but they mention that its with a reflector attached. Do you have experience with those Pixapro led lights? They claim to be brighter than the 300d as well but I don't know how much is that reflector adding to the measurement. Thanks!

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому

      @@ajrc1987 Yes, always look for measurements without a reflector, because every reflector has a different focus/beam angle, and it can really change the numbers. You can only get accurate comparisons of 2 lights using the bare bulb, which is the whole reason I built my comparison tool. Manufacturer provided specs oftentimes cannot be trusted, especially if they are ONLY listing brightness measurements with the reflector installed.
      I don't have experience with the Pixapro lights, sorry. But yes, it could be true that they are brighter than the 300d bare bulb, or maybe only with the reflector. Honestly though, the 300d is not very bright for the price, so I wouldn't be surprised either way. The 150 watt Godox lights are all brighter than the 300d, but the Aputure lights are built with longevity, and usability in mind, and part of that includes lower brightness at higher wattages.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 роки тому

      @@ajrc1987 It's really hard to beat the 150 watt Godox lights on brightness/quality for the price.
      If you need v-mount support and a carrying case, I'd recommend the VL150. If you don't, I'd recommend the SL150W II. Both are basically the same price.
      The VL200/SL200W II are 1/2 brighter than the 150 versions, and the VL300 is a full stop brighter than the VL150.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  2 роки тому

      I'm not sure what you mean. If you're shooting outdoors I'd recommend the VL300 for its brightness. You will need 2 v-mount batteries for the VL200 and 300, each one should be ~100Wh or greater capacity in my recommendation.
      I use these for inexpensive batteries: geni.us/gvmgv160

      Glad you asked :)
      Compare all the measurements here: newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=Godox+VL150&light2=Pixel+C220
      Apart from stats, the VL build quality is better. And although you can manually turn the fan off on the C220 (until it gets too hot and comes back on automatically), the VL lights are quieter overall.
      The C220 might have marginally "better" color accuracy, but the quality control of the color temperature of the Godox lights is much closer to 5600K, so more accurate to the advertised specs.
      I would recommend the VL150 over the C220, especially since it's also cheaper.

    I'm currently using a godox sl60w with a 90cm softbox.
    The idea is to film myself sitting in front of the window so I can see the outside in the background.
    Unfortunately 60w doesn't seem to be enough.
    Would vl150 be enough or would the vl200/vl300 be necessary?
    There's a black Friday sale here in Sweden right now and the vl 150 is almost half price of a vl300 and about 45% less than a Vl200.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  Рік тому

      Thanks! Once you start competing with the sun, especially with a softbox, things get a bit tougher for sure.
      A 150 watt light will be 1 stop brigther than a 60 watt light, and a 300 watt light will be 1 stop brighter than a 150 watt light. I highly recommend 300 watts or more when possible any time you want to light alongside the sun.
      I typically skip the VL200 because it's only 1/3-1/2 brighter than the VL150, but then requires 2 v-mount batteries, so you might as well get the 300 and make sure you have something that can get the job done. The value per watt is usually the best as well.
      I hope that helps! I'd greatly appreciate if you can use my links, although I know you're in Sweden :)
