- Опубліковано 2 січ 2018
- A barn-find Ferrari is about as good as it gets. In this episode, Barn Find Hunter Tom Cotter pulls the cover off a gorgeous unrestored 1957 Ferrari 250 GT Ellena that has been sitting for over 40 years. This amazingly complete V-12 Ferrari was brought over from Switzerland in the 1970s by the current owner’s father, who was in the business of buying and selling cars, motorcycles, and airplanes he imported from Europe. Follow along as Tom goes through the details of this beautiful grand tourer, which is complete with an original factory tool kit and the oft-overlooked genuine European cigarette butts in the hand-etched ash tray.

TOM, YOU ARE A LEGEND !!
I can listen to you all day.
thanks!!!!!
Not only do I love the rare finds (especially this one) ...but also all the information you provide along with it. Thank you.
Stunning find. Nothing beats a time capsule barn find, almost regardless of the marque and brand.
I really do appreciate Toms way of talking calmly with a certain confidence about the stuff he knows most about.......Thank you a lot Tom-I hope you continue for a very long time...cheers,Roger
My old lady is a barn find. She was dirty, worn out, hi milage, sagging rear end... She is having less emotion breakdowns, but still is a project in the works. Wish me luck guys. 😎
Refried Beans can I see the results?

My great uncle is a well known Ferrari collector and dealer in the UK and has rebuild several Gto's in his time, including the one belonging to chris evans the radio Dj. He would no doubt have any parts needed for this car.
Great show and episode :)
Hagerty thanks so much for this wonderful series. I can listen to Tom talk about cars all day long. The effort put into this is very much appreciated!
Yep the body would stay as is but mechanically worked over & clean up the interior. She's a gem. Love the channel looking forward to 2018. Happy New Year.
Oh & I wouldn't clean that ash tray, stay as is.
There's a guy in europe on the PelicanParts Porsche forums that has those Marchal lights for sale regularly.
Are they NOS or repops?
Theres always a few on eBay.
Surprisingly not expensive either. Few hundred bucks it seems.
Amazing story, thanks Tom. You’re right, you never see cars this original, so to restore this one mechanically and otherwise drive as-is, is absolutely the right thing to do. Incredible.
Tom ,this is priceless. I would like to take this moment to remember someone who introduced a young teenager to his passion for Ferrari's my former Brother-in-Law Max Hans Stephens (Pforterman ) who passed away back in december. While in the military (Career Army 82nd,and 173rd)and stationed in Italy (engineers) he bought ,and shipped back two. Although his story was more astounding having been born in Germany in 1938 (His Father was a pilot for the Luftwaffen) to escaping the wall on his third attempt, and serving two tours with the 173rd in Vietnam .
Wonderful video and thatk you and the owner for allowing it to be filmed
Tom, for some reason, i see you getting your own PBS show. Its informative and educational. I would not be surprised. I love your presentations and the variety of cars is mind boggling. Thanks
This is amazing. I would love to see an episode of things that pop out at you. I've watched you open hoods carefully waiting for something to jump out. You must have filmed a few. Keep up the great work.
Amazing what is still actually out there just sitting in somebody's barn.
Thank you Tom......This is a Fairy Tale....you are a lucky man and I feel lucky to have seen this rolling artwork, unmolested, as she was made. Again Thank you.
I was absolutely impressed watching this video here in the office, and for a moment I could feel the smell of gasoline an leather of this garage....seriously!
Thanks for the show Tom... congratulations from Brazil!
I am addicted to Toms channel.
I heard of a shed as we call them in Australia that had a 1976 Toyota Corolla in it that hadnt moved since Tuesday.
I was so excited because it was yellow and the same car that was my first car in fact.
The golden bit was there was a pack of Malboura reds in the glove box but unfortunatley they had been opened and someone had smoked one so that was a bummer as they havent made those since the ad's with the guy on the horse.
But all was forgotten when an attempt to start this classic succeded.
It was an incredible sensation since it was now Friday.
But seriously I Iove this channel.
Keep up the good work Tom. I am just a bit jelous as you dont see this kind of auto heritage here. 🙃
Man, I love this channel. A+
What a find, thanks Tom.....
One of the BEST channels on UA-cam !!
Keep up the good work Hagerty !!
50s SWB Ferraris are my FAVORITE! That is my dream fun cruising car. I just always loved the look of those bodies and the compact and beautiful lines. Right up there are also Giulias (my ideal most beautiful sedan), and strangely Datsun 510s. Guess which one I think I might be able to rock one day!
So nice, such a time capsule. And Tom Cotter describes so well with a proper english, thank you guys for putting hours to this
Tom's explanation and narration is second to none. Great channel. Hagarty.
Absolutely stunning. Old cars wearing their original paint are the best.....nothing even comes close.
Barn find episodes are the only reasons why I'm subbed, please, more more!!
my god it is beautiful just like that. with the patina.
Amazing these are still being found. The absolute rarity of these cars is beyond comprehension.
Female viewer here that I don’t know anything about cars 🚗 but I had been watching your shows the last two days. 😜. Beautiful 🚙s
A car lovers dream
Mesmerizing... Thank you sir!!
At first I was pretty angry that someone would leave a 1 of 32 Elena untouched like that, but as Tom took us through the history and state of the car, it completely changed my mind. Maybe one day this beauty will be at Pebble, but for now, I think she's happy as she is.
There is an unreserved class at PB.
Amazing car, amazing story...time capsule indeed
I Can't wait for the next episode every episode of the barn finds are awesome and tom you are a legend
Sharp car! Thanks Tom!
Wow and Wow nice very respectful interview with a classic
Wow! what a wonderful find and presentation. Thanks for sharing.
I love this series. What an amazing car!
I have no words for this find... just wow
Thanks Tom for doing what you do! I’ll probably never own one of these incredible cars you show us, but at least I can watch your show and dream.
Superb. What an amazing find. Wow!!!
awesome find, I love that it still has the tools
Some of the tools, there were a lot of empty loops.
So glad to hear the owner will keep the patina. Beautiful car just the way she is.
I’m glad I found this channel
Really cool to see all the cars that are found and hiding in all the barns and garages around the country
That tool kit at the end is pretty awesome. Rare, indeed. Tool kits are hard to find in good condition because they really got used - especially if they were imports to america. It was hard to find metric tools in america into the early 70's. My dad tells the story of my grandfather buying a vw beetle new in 1963. That tool kit in the car was all you had. We still have that car and restored it to like new condition but included the original olive drab cloth bag tool kit. When it was judged at shows VW judges were confused saying the 63 tool bag was originally a vinyl bag and the green cloth bag was for older VWs. My dad said, "look, i was 12 years old when i road home in this car with my dad when he picked it up at the dealer. That's the original tool bag that came with the car because that's all the tools we had to work on it." it sure confused every one. Someone surmised that it's likely they found an old stash of tool bags and instead of scrapping them, just substituted them on out going cars.
the same family still hand make these badges . the interior is cream .
Man i love classics even though i'm more into youngtimers, own a Audi 80 from 84' and always see inspiration for the future when watching these videos
I was worried you would waffle...
Thanks. 14 felt LIKE 3MIN.
Can't imagine you getting spares easy. GL for that.
Nice find, thanks for sharing!
Yay! New Video
Every clip i saw in your youtubechannel it's like traveling into the time, a real dream.
Wow this is like having a jackpot winning lottery ticket with no expiration date tucked away. But Tom, you need to connect the owner with Wayne Carini. He knows all about Ferrari's and what needs done to keep the car original and would be able to get the owner an invitation to Pebble Beach to be shown in the preservation class.
Excellent! awesome find!!
The Ellena was a continuation of the Boano. The Boano was Ferrari's first mass production car. They built about 50 Ellena's. Beautiful car and I would love to have one.
I've attended the Mille Miglia last year and I saw an identical one, but in light gray. It was driven by a man and his codriver (not mandatory for these revival events) was his own teenage son. The car stopped next to where I was standing because the town I live in is a twitchy one on the mountains and there are a lot of tight hairpins between the houses and the car had presumably some clutch and/or brakes problem. They sat there for a good hour, chatting with me and other spectators while waiting for the car to cool down so that they could continue the race. They even allowed us to sit in the car and take a photo.
It was my first time in a Ferrari that old (I've driven my neighbour's modern 612 Scaglietti once a few years ago when I still lived in my hometown) and I had chills down my spine the entire time. One day I will sit in my own classic Ferrari. One day...
my dad had a Boano 250 GT. When I was little i would sit in it, work the gearshift, and be amazed that it went to 300 MPH. I didn't know what kilometers were.
Mr. Tom is in love!!!! I think we all are! What a beauty...
Oh man! What a find!!! Do you need a side kick? LOL
Awesome patina. Beautiful!
Completely stellar presentation to an epic find. What a gem of a car☆
amazing and I hope there is a follow up video when it's running.
Tom the tools are made out of molybdenum - it’s a metal. You crack me up!
one off the first to see this. i love it!
As the Camera shows the Tac, up close, i see ( Girl X 100 )......lol.
I cannot even tell you how exciting it is just to see these Barn Finds you share, coming from a Blue Collar class, it is very unlikely for me to ever get to touch such finds, much less drive, and only Dream to own.
Thank you Hagerty for bringing these story's and finds into my little World!
Hi Tom, the small nut in the ashtray in the Ferrari was probably a cigarette snuffer. I use one in my shed.
Gorgeous, gorgeous find--that should clean up very nicely
It's almost to good to be true, but what an amazing find and to hear it will be sympathetically restored is great news indeed.
Talk about amazing barn finds , a Ferrari , for almost fifty years , my god !
OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! That is beyond belief!!! So amazing!!!!!
The fog light shouldn't look broken? Oh thanks for the tip Tom.
800k in perfect condition if you are wondering. But hard to predict how much is it worth for collector in this original state, maybe even more..
It is far from its 'original' state. Would not win at Pebble Beach, it that condition
They're not quite that pricey... yet! More info on value here: www.hagerty.com/apps/valuationtools/1957-Ferrari-250_GT-Ellena
Hagerty My father in Illinois his 250 is insured by you guys get ahold of him Robert............ You know
You seem to be all about accurate words Duty. So maybe he should have said 'original/unmolested'? Maybe then, you could have left a positive comment.
Hope one day DSM's will make it into the haggerty book, they were a 90's icon that get no lime light.
great find, talking about small displacement high reving of the same brand you should mention the 166 n 212 which some were 1995cc V 12...
I laughed my ass off when he says molybdenum HAHAHA
Just my favorite Ferrari
What a great find.
Love your videos, awesome to see that Ferrari
Nice! It reminds me of my neighbor who has a 62 corvette setting in his garage for the past thirty years or more and he’s the original owner! Wow! I told him I would trade my 1930 Ford Model A Roadster for it but he’s still holding out!
Tom, they were small because Italy taxed cars based on engine displacement per cylinder. Thus, smaller displacement smaller taxes. Ciao, TED
Great as usually
cheers, awesome car.
somebody has told me the difference between Ellena and Boano at last, A Ferrari collector would go nuts when you put the tools on the hood ! ! ! PS what is the red thing?
How great is that, your show is so great, informative, thank you
I swear I saw this car in Appleton WI driving as is. Had an old vintage plate on it. I assumed it was either at Motion Products or Classic Auto here getting work done
Great Find.Well the back looks familiar to my Volvo amazon.I dont know if anybody told you.but the Nut in the Ashtray is to extinguish the Cigarette and still keep the eyes on the road .sort of.
Regarding the tool kit, I can enlighten you. "Molybdenum" is just the type of metal which is used for these tools. Very common for wrenches or so. No Italian witchcraft.
Amazing
In Europe they bann all combustion cars after 2030 from public roads, in Germany they limit fuel supply to only one gas station per city from year 2025 on :-(
Awesome find I would like to go with you in your quest of barn finds that would be great
just wow greetings from ireland
57 Ferrari 250 GT Elena, OMG! :)
Whaddya say... is it the new BluesMobile or what.
Very nice Tom, thanks.
hahahahahha molybdenum! @11:55 Sounds Italian! hahaha
molibdeno = Molybdenum
Wow that is a beautiful car
Only took 4 months,, to know you are the master,.. love the show,,, any 305 scramblers, let me know!
You looking for 305 Scramblers (like Hondas?)
Molybdenum is a type of metal, it is the Moly in Chromoly Steel.
My dad had a 68 330 GT with a body built by pininfarina. I think he paid 15 grand for it back in the 80s. He spent a year restoring the car
Molybdenum: It is used in steel alloys to increase strength, hardness, electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion and wear. The spanner is such steel. Toolmaker Gedore also uses Molybdenum alloys, resulting in a superior-quality tool that lasts and lasts and lasts. So it's not surprising that Ferarri would use this alloy either.
Amazing car!
So are we at the point where this unrestored, non-operational Ferrari is worth more then a fully restored one?
Yes, its almost impossible to restore completely to the original.
Vegaspsycho probably, i would pay more for this one than a fully restored one.
damn didnt know there were good people in yhis wokd that person that sent the light gaves me new hope. thanks for ur channel now that im laid up due to an operation i have a cool show to keep me sane
I’d got to be honest I’d leave everything like the way it was and drive that beautiful Ferrari even the cigarette butts would remain. Value who knows maybe a million or so but priceless to me if it were mine. Hell yes don’t think I’d change anything even the broken lens stays. Change tires but keep originals and change fluids and belts and drive it
