The point of the original story is that last man on Earth, vampire hunter, realizes in the end, that the vampires are scared of him, and that He is the legendary monster that needs to be killed...because He is different from everybody else.

Except that if there were other people that were living in the city, the “vampires” wouldn’t think twice about killing them.

For what the movie had established up to the alternate ending the original ending made more sense. In my humble opinion. I just never thought humans would hand the planet over to vampires. We humans would fight to the end for our planet. In this case to find a cure.

    • @tjjordan4207

I like how he becomes the new monster for a new species, but I was always confused by how the 'living' vampires in the novel. I get that there are two different versions of vampires: one is truly undead and the other is living. But wouldn't the ones who are living have memories of their time as regular humans? And why hadn't Neville run across them if they could stand sunlight for a short amount of time before? They can communicate and act more human, as the woman Ruth was able to.
This is why I prefer the explanation given in the alternate ending of the movie. The new society of vampires are truly new and clearly don't remember their time as humans, and they cannot go into sunlight. In fact, Neville discovering that they have regained human intelligence is hinting that it's only happened recently, which means this is the very first encounter.

But who's consciousness the dark seekers have? Is it the same person's mind before the infection but deciding to want to live as a dark seeker, or did the virus hijack the mind/create a new consciousness separate from the host's?
Because if it's the latter, Neville is definitely in the right to want to cure and restore the original person's mind and body. Even if it's still the host's mind, the virus would definitely be affecting it by a lot and try to preserve itself. I would be more sympathetic to the seekers if they were born like that, but they weren't and the mind was forcefully overtaken.

Also the least like the book. It's a zombie movie that they slapped the title on. In the book it's a new society of intelligent vampires (though there are mindless vampires who were not alive when they became vampires which the intelligent vampires also hunt). It asks the question, if everyone on the planet is a vampire and the last human spends his days killing them while they sleep, then who is the real monster of the story? Is he now to vampires what vampires once were to humans? At least the alternate ending hints at that. But the movie just takes too many liberties for my taste. I miss the actual dialogue with the infected that is present in the previous versions. After two versions, I was hoping we'd get the definitive version. Instead, we got the version that most disregards the book.
The 1964 version starring Vincent Price, The Last Man on Earth, is the closest to the novel. Though Price is miscast as Neville. Even The Omega Man is closer to the book than the Will Smith version.

If I'm not mistaken, there were undead (zombie) vampires and, um, not undead (intelligent) vampires. At the end of the book the intelligent vampires were wiping out the undead ones that would surround Robert's house every night... I wish this movie had included the experiments Robert was doing on the undead ones he was capturing. My favorite was that most of them had an aversion to seeing the crucifix, just like traditional vampire folklore, but his neighbor didn't. Then he remembered his neighbor was Jewish before he turned, got out a Star of David and it reacted as if it was seeing a crucifix. Really cool idea making a traditional vampire weakness essentially a psychosomatic remnant of the original personality/faith.

I'd say this alternate ending is closer to the novel than the theatrical ending, but even it is quite different from the book. The title "I Am Legend" refers to Robert Neville and his relation to the creatures, and the role reversal that occurs when creatures of myth such as vampires have taken over the world and have become the norm. To us, vampires are beings of legend. But in this juxtaposed world, Neville has become the legend to this race of vampiric beings.
The novel was really one of those trailblazing works that attempted to deconstruct creatures of fiction and fantasy in an analytical and even scientific way, as Nevile spends much of the book trying to determine if this vampiric state is caused by a biological pathogen like bacteria or a virus, and devise explanations for things like why vampires avoid sunlight and crosses and why a stake through the heart kills them.

Basically does the original person choosing to stay and live as a dark seeker, or the virus created separate consciousness and forcing the person to be a dark seeker?
Because if the dark seeker's consciousness is a completely separate one from the normal person, I would definitely agree with Neville trying to apply a cure and restore the mind of the person since the virus is literally hijacking someone else's mind and body and people didn't choose that, it's not like they were born like this.

I get what this ending is going for, but it doesn't work. Not when it establishes the "zombies" in this movie as human beings infected with a curable disease and not some alien race or alternate species. It makes no sense to throw the cure away and doom the world because one semi-feral human is angry about losing their partner.

It doesn't work because the movie didn't adapt the story properly. By setting the infected up as the clear monsters, the alternate ending (thematically more aligned with the actual ending of the book) doesn't make sense. That's why they changed it to the theatrical ending.
Had they stuck closer to the source material the real (alternate) ending not only makes more sense but is better. The infected were evolving and had begun to create their own society. Robert Neville was their legend. The monster that could walk in the sun and hunted and killed them. They had grown to fear him and they couldn't communicate with him either.
Him taking the Alpha's mate was the straw that broke the camel's back. It's only at the end when he realizes that he became their boogeyman that he sees the truth in them. That they're evolving and that their attacks on him are justified because those are the same feelings any normal human would have.
I enjoy the alternate ending with the context of the actual story in the background. Good movie but fails to capture the essence of the actual book.

So interesting fun facts that I pulled from different sources that had the same information: While initially released as book-accurate... the "alternate ending" was removed from the theatrical cut due to negative response from initial test screening audiences. Ironically, there is a plans for a sequel for this movie that would consider the "alternative" ending to be the canonical one.
The creators also wanted to create a prequel to the movie and depict what led up to this movie; but that prequel, so far, has not been green lit. The sequel has been green lit but no word on when it'll be made (let alone a release date).

So, Charlton Heston read the book on a plane and pitched to have it adapted into a movie. The movie would become The Omega Man. In the film, there is a scene where Heston's character is watching a movie about Woodstock and is commenting as he watches. This scene inspired Joel Hodgson to create the tv series Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Where he and a bunch of puppet robots would watch a movie while adding reactive commentary. This would become what we see now as modern react channels such as you guys. 😁

You nailed it with your realization that Will Smith is the actual villain of this story.
In the original novel, the "infected" are more vampire-like than zombie-like. And they're not mindless monsters that kill indiscriminately - they talk and think and have their own society. They often roam the streets at night and call out to Neville to torment him (or maybe they know where his house is and just hang out outside of it and yell at him all night to disrupt his sleep). At the end Neville is captured, put on trial, and sentenced to death, and he realizes that the time of humanity is over - the people that humanity has mutated into from the virus is the new status quo, and that by kidnapping the infected and trying to turn them back into human, he has become the monster (which is what he thought of the infected up until this point). He has become "the legend" that the infected tell each other (and their children) to watch out for, like human parents warning their children about monsters, boogey-men, etc. He finally accepts that his goal to save humanity has been futile and that he has become this monster that has preyed on the infected.
(it's been a long time since I read the story so I may have gotten some bits wrong)

    • @jhornacek
      @jhornacek 2 місяці тому +2

The theatrical ending eliminates any indication that the infected think at all and have any relationships (i.e. the alpha's desire to rescue his mate) - they're just mindless monsters. Neville doesn't realize that he's the villain and ends up coming up with a cure but sacrifices himself to give it to Anna to take to the colony. So it presents him as a hero that gives his life to save humanity from the "evil monsters".
This pretty much goes against the whole point of the book (and its title) that Neville has become "the legend" that is killing members of the new species that has replaced humanity.

Yes, you got it. He is the monster of the story... The 3 adaptations of the book are really good in their own ways. But, personally the 1964 version with Vincent Price is the best.

Mike Patton, from tge band Faith No More and numerous otger musical endeavors, did all tge voice work for tge infected. There is also a lot of BTS makeuo tests and OG concept art and photos from previous attemots at making this film. It was originally going to be dirrctes by Ridley Scott with Arnold Schwarzenegger... But before tge ultimate dexision to make the infectes all CGI there were some really cool practical effects tests tge did that leaked onto UA-cam

And that's why this is better than the theatrical. This one is more the book ending.

I love this ending so much more than the theatrical one where he just sacrifices himself, letting the creatures be the bad guys and him the martyr. This here is so much better with it's unexpected change of perspective. This world needs more capability to look at things from different perspectives. Thats why i think this ending is so much better and more important. The theatrical one is for people who can only think in black and white.

Exactly! The moment George stated that this was the alternate ending version I audibly cheered, lol. Most reactors watch the theatrical version with disappointment at the abrupt Hollywood ending and I don't blame 'em. I love this version because of the actual nuance that's missing from many movies these days. That and it stays true to the book, haha.

I've only been able to watch this movie once because of the scene with Sam...it murdered me.

Hi guys, compare this to the Charlton Heston version, The Omega Man. The soundtrack is kinda cool.
