Eva 01 most likely in close combat, but then again Wing Gundam Zero has the most fire power and aerial superiority. If Hero decides to play lame and shoot from super far range the rest of the competition wouldn't be able to do shit in terms of hitting anything in the sky, and Wing Zero can stay very far up to launch devastating blasts.
He said "I am Megatron!" when he unfroze because he just spent the better part of a century listening to little insects wander around calling him NBE1 and took offense. Which is totally in character for Megatron lol..
Also, there’s two possible reasons for why the transformers made by the cube are hostile. One they’re based off of Megatron‘s technology, which influences their behavior. Two they start out naturally feral and are just reacting to the presence of other life forms out of fear.
Oh one more thing. Transformers don’t actually have genders in the original canon due to being machines. Some do mimic feminine traits due to exposure to human society.
29:40 for the most part, the series stayed true to the cartoons in regards to what each transformer turned into. But as each movie came out they kepts getting further and further from the overall source material.
As I'm sure a dozen-plus people are going to say, Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime in the movie, was also his voice in the 80s Transformers cartoon.
The scene where Starscream flies up the dam, flips, transforms and lands on the top of the dam wall is one of the coolest scenes in film history :D probably my 2nd favourite transformer, his voice and character is really cool
Cowardice aside, Bayverse Starscream was a threatening figure. He doesn't hold a candle close to Megatron, but he'd rewrite the fear of F-22 Raptors for any ground forces.
I’ve always loved the scene of him flying over the city and taking out the other jets. Transforming between robot and jet as he swipes at them is pretty cool.
I like when Megatron flies up the dam, transforms, then Starscream jumps off the dam, transforms, and flies toward the camera before Megatron lands. So epic! 🔥😎
The robots are naturally different sizes. when they go to different planets, they can scan the local vehicles. They originally had forms on Cybertron based on their function, but learned how to scan new forms to hide. There are some who have learned to mass shift as well, but generally the same amount of mass is needed in the alt form as the robot uses. There are several different origin stories, but if we are talking about the 1985-86 cartoon, Optimus Prime (leader) was a red cabover semi truck, Bumblebee (scout) was a yellow VW Beetle, Ironhide (warrior) was a red Vanette, Ratchet (medic) was a Vanette ambulance, Jazz was Porche, Megatron was originally a P38 handgun, but in more recent years has been a tank or a spaceplane, and Starscream was a spaceplane but scanned an F-15 like plan for an earth mode. Yes, they can be repaired as long as their "spark" is not destroyed. There are "female" transformers, but how many and whether they are "female" or "feminine" depends on which storyline is referenced. In the original cartoon there were "female autobots". Later media explained retroactively that there were not different genders (no sexes as we understand them) but as they interacted with other species that did have genders, some decided they identified more with the female gender and altered their forms. In the original cartoon, the military vehicles generally became Decepticons and the construction/transportation/civil equipment were Autobots.
Good explanation, Tara! I think that Michael Bay made the "artistic" direction that their sizes should be the same as their car-forms. That's why Optimus is a Peterbuilt. If you want a 27 foot tall robot, you go big or you go home. I think that a lot of the other choices were based on which car company paid the most for product placement.
@@lonnieeastin6401 it was pretty much 100% GM product placement. The company even gave the production loads of water-damaged cars to use in the destruction scenes.
@@Daveyboy100880 When you watch the movie, the product placement is so obvious. It's a little embarrassing. How many close ups of the GM logo do you need? I get it, product placement is a thing.
I saw this movie in 2007 in theaters with no expectations like everyone else. And like everyone else, this movie really surprised me how awesome it is. I hope you continue this series. Not all of these movies are good but Transformers 1,3, and 4 are the best.
The thing is, when Megatron was brought to Hoover Dam he was studied for decades by people only referring to him with the assigned codename. You can imagine the anger when he's released and the first thing he does is say his actual name.
I find it hilarious Imagine it, everyone's calling him Iceman and you can faintly hear him shouting 'MEGATRON!' through clenched teeth! (Because he can't open his mouth!)
Fun fact, both Shia and Megan were only 20 when they made this, so they were a lot closer to their characters ages when they filmed this then you would think.
I remember hearing that they had to animate a couple thousand different moving parts for Optimus' first transformations. Also, in the second movie, there's a character that was so complex to animate that the computers literally exploded trying to do it
Fun fact: Marvel's Iron Man was in development as a movie more or less forever, but finally got serious traction in the mid-2000s when a) Marvel decided to fund their own stuff and started thinking about Iron Man more seriously, and 2) Jon Favreau, who was developing it, saw early shots from Transformers and realized that CGI has finally reached the point where an Iron Man suit can be done well, and it was time to start production.
The irony there is that Favreau preferred Stan Winston's practical effects over CGI in Zathura. There've been plenty of robotic suits in sci-fi history from Hollywood to Japan that a live action adaptation could've probably been done in the 90s after RoboCop & The Rocketeer were already released.
On the Transformers DVD, there was a preview for Iron Man at the end of the credits as at this time, it was owned by Paramount Studios. Disney didn't buy it till 2009 and their logo wasn't displayed until Avengers 1.
For the transformation shots, each individual vehicle part on the transformers was independently modeled and then allowed to move from it's position in car mode to where it is in robot mode. The scene where the Autobots first revel themselves to Sam in the ally took 72 hours PER FRAME to render due to the amount of CGI components in motion
The Allspark is a comparatively recent thing in terms of lore, and because there have been so many different versions of transformers it's not always been the same thing - at first it was a word for their afterlife, but I think from this movie onwards it's generally been something that brought transformers to life - most modern media says that transformers have 'Sparks' which are kind of a mix between a heart and a soul, and they're generally seen as being created by artefacts such as the Allspark. (EDIT: I think that the only reason the transformers brought to life in this movie all seem evil is so there can be more carnage onscreen, I doubt there's a lore reason.) Another thing of note is that in most media, human weapons aren't usually very effective against transformers (at least, not the powerful ones), but Michael Bay is very fond of the American military and wanted them to be the heroes. I used to read the comics back in the eighties, and I actually thought this film wasn't bad for a modern telling, but I saw the next two and was pretty disappointed. I eventually watched 'Bumblebee' due to the general perception of it being an improvement over the sequels and I think it may be the best of the live action films I've seen (although it's kind of a reboot).
"I think that the only reason the transformers brought to life in this movie all seem evil" i like to believe its because of how they might have a memory component when they go sentient and dislike the treatment to which they were subject and thus seem 'evil'
As a life long Transformers fan, this series is a far cry from the cartoon and comics these are based on. With that said, this series is peak Bayhem and a guilty pleasure.
One other fun fact though I'm sure it was brought up already. In the cartoon, Bumblebee was a Volkswagon Beetle. They got a sponsorship with GM for this movie so all the cars are GM models and that's why they made him a Camaro but, as you saw, they did pay tribute to the original design when he drives up and parks next to the Beetle in the car lot.
Scale is an interesting question in Transformers. The toys were all different sizes. Bumblebee was originally a VW Beetle that was kind of "Hot Wheels" scale. Prime was a Freightliner truck, but more at Tonka truck scale. In the cartoons, all of them were roughly the same size as robots no matter what they transformed into, which means they dramatically changed scale (Megatron was a gun and SoundWave a boom box, but would suddenly become 4 meter tall robots as they were transforming). It made little sense. It's also worth noting that like He-Man, the "story" came after the toys. Hasbro made the toys, then produced a 18 minute commercial for them in the form of a cartoon.
I remember reading an interview with Michael Bay where he said he wasn't going to have Transformers changing their mass. He also said he didn't want Bumblebee to be a VW Beetle and shamelessly took advantage of the ability to have GM contribute to the budget by using their cars.
That's one thing I'm really glad about the films. That Megatron never turned into a wimpy-ass pistol. He basically just stayed in his original alien ship form, because why would somebody as arrogant as Megatron ever stoop to taking on a shape from the world of those "pathetic fleshlings?"
"Transformers Lore" is a bit interesting, since they started as a toy-line and commissioned Marvel Comics to write a backstory for them. But, yes, their default sizes are actually different from each other (Bumblebee was always shorter than the others). In the very first cartoon we see them on their home planet of Cybertron and they did turn into vehicles (but nothing that resembled anything on earth). They even looked a bit different while in robot form. Who was the largest? I am no Transformer expert, but the largest I've seen was from the 1985 movie (and was voiced by Orson Welles in his final role) named Unicron. It was the size of a planet (or at least a moon), and it consumed other planets Galactus-style.
SPOILERS!!!! Depending on the series/run, Primus is usually the biggest Transformer. The planet the Transformers come from, Cybertron, is Primus and he's usually either asleep, dormant or dead. Unicron is Cybertron's moon but is typically the largest transformer that's still alive/active.
They actually started as many different toy lines that just happened to involve transforming robots from Japan, that's how a macross varitech snuck in as one of them. The minibots (bumblee sized mini toys) were one line, the regular transformers another, all the ones that turned into things like megatron and soundwave were another line.
"Isnt Michael Bay..?" "Explosions" is such a good way to describe his movies lol also, the human in the helicopter is a hologram. In the Transformers series Decepticons usually go for military vehicles and flying vehicles or predator species of animals for the mechanical superiority where the Autobots go for inconspicuous vehicles cause they usually try to hide from the Decepticons to limit collateral damage. Also their Cybertronian forms look like jets and cars but they're like native modes of transportation on their planet. I wouldn't doubt in the lore that humans probably reverse engineered vehicles from seeing them throughout history. The reason they aren't heavy too is because even though they look like metal they're biological so they arent as heavy as they seem. There is also female transformers but there's only really 2 that get used in transformers media. The WFC and FOC games are VERY good if you've never played them. To answer the question about the other movies, my personal opinion is that they get worse as they go. The first one and Bumblebee are pretty much the only ones I like. And Bumblebee is because they followed the story closer to what we saw in the games.
@@TheJerbol okay I should say “arguably the most heroic character” but ever since his introduction in the early 80s he has been a beast of heroism, especially G1 and G2
@@DragonbIaze052I guess you can look at it that way, you could go so far as to say that literally anything that paints the military in the slightest positive light or shows them as being competent is propaganda. But there is no way to get real world footage of functioning currently in service military hardware without going to the military.
With regard to Hollywood movie-making the US military generally has a policy of "we'll provide some cool shit as long as you make us look good". One of the few movies that the US military didn't help out on was Independence Day...because they didn't want the movie to feature any reference to Area 51.
Transformers (or Cybertronians) have a specialized mechanical organ in their body called a Transformation Cog, or "T-Cog" for short. The T-Cog allows for the Cybertronian to scan ANYTHING (not just vehicles) and reformat the living metal that makes up their bodies to replicate what they had scanned. Then they can reconstruct their bodies and convert into a perfect replica of their alternate mode. The drivers are actually just holograms, as Mass Shifting (a technique that allows giant Transformers to turn into handheld guns) isn't supposed to exist in these movies (Can't explain what happened to the Allspark though)
Guilty pleasure. Not wild about the sequels, but I thoroughly enjoy this one. A couple things about the CGI looking as good as it did and still does: (1) to his credit, Michael Bay 100% understood how to light the various components to a vehicle, so they were able to both assemble and convincingly light the various parts of the robots to fit in with their surroundings, and (2) they animated the robots with what feels like a believable amount of mass, which made them feel realistic and present.
If I remember correctly, the animators accounted for each piece in each form, even if not always visible. I.e. if there was a little triangle shape panel as the upright robot mode, it would be somewhere on the car mode (though not necesarily visible and may be flush with other panels so not looking like a triangle).
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 Any project manager is not directly a part of or has to be technically capable of every process. A director is ultimately someone who consults and knows how to assemble the best parts to make a whole. Without Bay there wouldn't have been this movie in this form to criticise after the fact. This film CGI still holds up massively compared to most new movies because he knew what he needed from the CGI crew. No different to Cameron and Avatar etc. They dont have to actually sit there animating it themselves.
Plus metal was the first realistic looking material in CGI. It's the easiest material to do. One of the problems CGI still has is things having this metallic shininess.
Another thing to know about Michael Bay: on the Armageddon commentary track Ben Affleck said he asked Michael Bay wouldn’t it be easier to teach astronauts how to drill than it would be to teach drillers how to be astronauts and he just said “shut the fuck up, Ben”
Optimus prime was a semi truck. Bumble bee was a yellow VW bug, the one simone squealed for before the camero showed up. The cybertronians are all different sizes.. the biggest for a long while were the bots like Devestator, that was 5 construction vehicles that came together like Voltron or a Megazord. Then we got aircraft carriers and a metroplex that was a city on cybertron that was also a transformer.. And then we have the biggest baddie ever.. Unicron, voiced by Orson Wells (Yes, the director of the Birds Orson Wells.. he famously said "I voiced a toy that fights other toys").. Unicron is basically Galactus from Marvel, it's a planet that eats other planets and can also transform into a humanoid robot.. a planet sized humanoid robot
This series of films (and Bay) end up in going down some truly bizarre roads but I remember seeing this one in the theaters when it came out and it was awesome. As a kid who grew up with the cartoon in the 80s, this movie hit the mark for me. For all its flaws, it balances humor and light heartedness of the cartoon with some intense and satisfying action.
The Transformers franchise was originally Japanese, but in a weird way. In Japan there were two toy lines, Micro Change and Diaclone, which had toys with robots that could transform into various things. Hasbro then partnered with Japanese toy company Takara to license these two toy lines and create an all new backstory for them, thus giving birth to the Transformers toy line and universe. This explains why the original toys were so varied with its transformations, why one could transform into a car while another could change into a handgun.
Sounds a little like how the Robotech series came together, which actually consisted of three different anime shows. (Macross + Southern Cross + MOSPEADA) And conicidentally (?) it also had planes and a starship that could transform.
It was actually Marvel Comics and their animation studios (in association with Sunbow Productions) that came up with the back story since they were producing the comic book and animated series.
Megatron's alternate form in this movie is a "fighter jet" of sorts from their home planet Cybertron. He's the only one in the film that does not use an Earth vehicle as his alternate form, it's not fully explained why but my guess is he probably does not really give a shit about hiding by the time he gets thawed, and/or thinks Earth vehicles are inferior/beneath him.
I think converting to an Earth-based vehicle would also alter his level of strength to a degree. Because throughout the films, Megatron gradually grows weaker and weaker throughout. First film, full strength in his native form. Could take on Prime singlehandedly and likely win on his own. Second film, not quite as strong even with a Cybertronian alt form. Still quite powerful, but now is more dependent on allies to fight off Prime (i.e. the forest battle) Third film, at his weakest state with permanent damage and an Earth alt form. Barely ever fought anyone by himself and predominantly conducted the war instead of fighting in it. So alongside the successive defeats and sustained damage, it seems changing alt forms also does something that affects a Transformer's physical condition. Heck, we've seen how bad Prime became when he assimilated that Peterbuilt.
Live action movie lore, definitely . Original cartoon lore ... -- well let's just say that Darth Vader isn't the only popular villain with a presence . After all, if it's one thing 80's villains have taught me is that the greater the villain, the greater the hero .
There is a show on Netflix called The Toys That Made Us, with an episode on the Transformers. Gives a nice insight on how it was all created, which was of course to sell toys.
0:41 There’s at least one transformer designed by a famed Gundam artist. The character was from a Japanese only Transformers series called Transformers Victory. The Gundam like Autobot is the main hero of the show named Star Saber.
Yes, please continue! I know everyone may not agree, but these movies are a guilty pleasure for me, all the way through. I’d highly recommend giving them a shot!
It will always be funny to me that Megan Fox in this movie is the actually level-headed and competent character while Shia is a screaming and rambling madman
I always thought that the Transformers that were created by the cube were feral, because they were frightened after just being created, as you said. Also, almost all of the dialogue with Sam‘s parents was improvised. The actors had such great chemistry, they just let them have a go at it, and boy did it pay off. They are hilarious together throughout the series.
Saw this in the theater with my dad and we loved it! Michael Bay originally turned down the offer to direct the film because he thought a kids movie was a stupid idea until he read the script and jumped onboard. Robert Zemeckis and Joseph Khan were considered for the job, until producer Steven Spielberg learned that Bay was picked to direct. The climax was going to take place in the Grand Canyon but it was switch to Los Angeles in order for the human characters to fight off the Decepticons. The original script was going to be told from a human perspective, akib to a disaster movie and that the Autobots and Decepticons had no dialogue
so one way to easily determine Decepticon or Autobot, is that Autobots tend to adopt vehicles that are common in the civilian populace, cars, semi trucks, fire engines, jeep etc. Decepticons tend to adopt forms that related to military or are weaponized in some way. There are of course exceptions, but this is the general rule.
Saw this in the theater with a bunch of friends. When I was going back to get in my car I froze for a second putting the key in the door in a real "Oh shit what if..." moment. Was pretty darn good at the time. The Transformers lore is a bit strange. It has all the wonderful inconsistencies of a series made to sell toys to kids rather than focus on a story, which I think is probably what made it perfect as a project for Michael Bay.
this is my nostalgic franchise, they may be far from cinematic masterpieces but they are full of things to love. try listening to the popular scores from all five movies, they're fantastic
This transformers movie is probably my all time favorite movie of all time. I just fell in love with it and could probably recite it word for word. Although the following 4 bay movies did degrade in story and cliches, they're all still fun and cool to watch.
It’s my favorite movie too! The story is good, the human characters are actually funny, the score is fantastic, and the CGI is incredible! After all these years, it’s still amazing! The sequels…exist and they’re kinda okay sometimes, but the 2007 movie is by far the best! 😁
Yes! I love Transformers! Grew up watching the old cartoons from the 80's, and I loved these movies too... still does. So happy that some of my favorite reactors are watching these❤️
It doesn't matter how many times I've seen the movie, the scene with Optimus and the other Autobots arriving on Earth will always give me the good kind of chills.
I turned my car into a modified version of Barricade. I work in security, so my car says SECURITY on either side of the car. I also have the patch behind the front wheel which reads security with the Decepticon insignia. I even found the "To enslave and destroy" message Barricade has on his police unit form. My involvement with Fire/Rescue also makes my lightbar legal to have too.
even though the movies get weird after the third one, the CGI remains consistent throughout but my favourite thing about the first one is how they transform has more kinda impact
"Who's who?" The Decepticons took almost all Military forms, and the one cop car. Autobots took all regular cars and the Fire truck/EMS guy. The volkswagon beetle at the beginning was an homage to the cartoon. Bumblebee was a VW beetle in the cartoons, not a Camaro.
The original Megatron transformed into a gun. In the cartoon he also shrank so another Decepticon could use him. In this movie they made him into a jet and looks a lot like Skyfire.
I had the Police Decepticon toy, on my way down to Cape cod and I get a ticket for speeding, I had the toy with me because I'm a nerd. After the stop I asked the Trooper if he would have laughed if I had told him I had a police escort and showed him the toy. He said I was lucky the stop was over, lol.
Even in the original series, the reason why they can transform was never fully explained. In the real-world, Hasbro bought toys from two separate toylines (Diaclone + Microman) from Takara and mashed them into one storyline, written up by Marvel Comics. I had some original Diaclones growing up. They were cool. It had a 1-inch poseable figure/driver. And the missiles fired. The Autobots were originally all cars, hence their name - auto(mobile) + bots.
You should go and rewatch season 3, I'm pretty sure it explains that the Autobots originated transforming as a way to combat the superior firepower and ruthlessness of the Decepticons
The Camaro Bumblebee transform after scanning the car in the Tunnel was a Camaro Prototype. Only one of it ecxisted at that time the film was made. First time seen this "new" Camaro in Transformers(2007). Released was this Car 2 years later in 2009. So Michael Bay had one chance to make this Movie with the Prototype and not damaging it.
Fun fact: Transformers is a copy of an earlier animated show called Go-bots, but Transformer out performed them so well that people often think that Go-bots is the copy
As a kid growing up in the 80's I had several of the toys and watched the cartoon. When I heard this was going to be a live action movie I was pumped. The first movie is good, but not great. Sadly, IMO, they just get worse. As kids back then, we wanted to see this be a movie so bad and when it happened, it wasn't awesome as I hoped. That happens a lot when I hear that part of my childhood is coming to life- GI Joe (2009), Clash of the Titan (2010 remake), this franchise, etc.... Honestly, I think "Bumblebee" was better and the Transformers look like they did in the 80's cartoon. You two really should watch the animated movie from 1986 and compare. I will always love that movie. The soundtrack is awesome. Stan Bush rules.
I will never forget the feeling seeing them actually die in the animated movie, as opposed to always coming back in the cartoon series. I was devastated, lol.
Fun fact: When they filmed this movie the new Camaro didn't really exist yet. Except the prototype/concept version. Actual new Camaro's wouldn't be available until 2009 So Bumblebee's in this movie isn't actual a Camaro. Bumblebee's (newer) Camaro appearance was actually a prototype Camaro body retrofitted over top of an early 2000's Holden/Pontiac GTO Chassis and Drivetrain.
Optimus Prime was indeed a Semi Truck, but others were changed since much like the original cartoon was designed to sell toys, this movie got a boat load of money from Chevy to sell cars. For instance Bumblebee was originally a yellow VW Beetle, instead of a Camaro.
The desert village battle was filmed at White Sands. A US Military testing range and the area had to be cleared of any unexploded bombs before filming. Also, the radio chatter for air support and inside the AWACS is what it would sound like in real life, the only thing that wasn't real was the code names used.
I was super excited for this movie. While I still have reservations about it, in the theater, I jumped up out of my seat several times to the embarrassment of my girlfriend.
Fun fact for the pacific rim comment, gypsy danger is canonically 260 ft tall…Optimus and Megatron are both about 30-35 feet. In terms of numbers the cybertronians would probably win, but they themselves are also basically an endangered species due to like 4 million+ years of war so it would probably come down to experience
I honestly forgot how fun and entertaining the human parts were in this movie, especially the desert parts. In later movies they I remember them being uninteresting and felt they they took away the focus on the Transformers.
In the 80s cartoon, they could change size based on what they changed into. Soundwave could shrink down from full sized giant robot to normal sized boom box. Megatron transformed into a handgun and shrank down so other transformers could shoot with him.
In the comics, Megatron could even transform into a human-scale handgun. Can't remember the issue #, but it was the one that introduced the AerialBots. Conservation of Mass wasn't really a thing...
@@warbird333 AerialBots were a group of 5 planes that combined to form Superion. The 5 cars were the Stunticons, which were their Decepticon counterparts. Can't remember the name of their combined form. StuntiCons were introduced in the same episode of the cartoon as the AerialBots, but an issue or two after in the comics.
Fun fact: The character of Trent, portrayed by the very same actor, also appears in Friday the 13th (2009). Optimus Prime and Jason Voorhees exist in the same universe.
29:12 the sizes vary based on the vehicle they transform into and their role as an autobot. For example, bumblebee is a smaller bot because he is a scout
I remember liking parts of the second movie, but for the most part, I agree. I DO think Bumblebee was great though... out of all of the "Bayformers" universe movies, it's the one most like the original cartoon, IMO (at least, aesthetically with the robot's forms). Though the ending can be confusing cause it basically retcons the first movie.
That was a very fun reaction. I grew up with Gen 1 Transformers and loved it. The animation was not perfect but the characters had great personalities. I also loved Robotech I never got to see any Gundam shows but I did have a Gundam model. I don't think it's necessary to pick just one franchise. Yes Simone there are Female Transformers but unfortunately Michael Bay doesn't give any of them much of a role. FUN FACT: The first female character in the original 1980s cartoon, Arcee, appeared in the 1986 animated movie when writer Rob Friedman's daughter protested that there were no women Transformers. I enjoyed this first movie. I actually got emotional listening to Optimus Prime's speech at the end. Goose bumps is correct. That's why so many Transformer fansxare extremely disappointed in the sequels Michael Bay directed. Everything started pretty good and then Michael Bay ruined the Franchise. As for this movie Some of the comedy is really great Like you said good cheesy Some is just stupid. I really like the scene at the used car dealership when Sam buys Bumblebee. The movie has some moments close to the heart/feel of Gen 1 Transformers and of course incredible ground breaking visual effects. I want great CGI but I really want a story with substance aswell. Optimus and Bumblebee are fantastic. I'm not a fan of the Starscream in this movie. The OG Starsceam is iconic and had a very distinctive personality and voice. Don't waste your time with Michael Bay Transformer sequels especially the second movie it is sadly a total train wreck of incoherent garbage Terribly written lacking proper knowledge of Transformers or heart. Sadly Michael Bay ignored the Autobots code of ethics/honor for the sequels. Autobots never kill unless it's totally necessary even if fighting a Decepticon. They are meant to be peaceful reluctant warriors. This movie is loosely based on Gen 1 Transformers but very enjoyable. Unfortunately Michael Bay's sequels completely ruined the franchise. I suggest instead watch The Bumblebee movie 2018 Its not perfect but enjoyable. It definitely has more character development and heart than Michael Bay sequels. It's directed by Travis Knight and stars Hailee Steinfeld Hopefully the new Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be good. Thankfully not directed by Michael Bay.
Fun fact, most of the time you get a show and then toys to capitalize on the popularity of the show. In the case of Transformers, you had a toy company make a toy, and then created a show specifically as a marketing tool for the toy. That's why Hasbro owns the IP.
It's just a bit over the top though. Compared to the Bumblebee film, I've heard the Bay films transformations described as "a bunch of triangles and toasters flying around on screen".

Hope you guys come around to watch the Bumblebee movie. Its the best love letter to transformers.❤️ (The Bay transformers arent really...the best or most well liked by the TF community)
Here in the US and Canada we didn't get Gundam until the 2000s. But we did get something Gundam with lots of main character deaths with Exosquad in 1993, but that was only here in the US, Canada never got Exosquad.
I grew up in America and loved Gundams, I didn’t ever mess with transformers. I still do today as an adult, the models are fun to build. Also to George’s question about transformers on a planet without technology, there’s a cartoon called Beastwars, where transformers basically are on a prehistoric earth with no humans, they turn into animals.

Optimus Prime vs Wing Gundam Zero vs Gipsy Danger vs Hulk Buster vs EVA-01. who would win?
Gurren Lagann
Eva 01 most likely in close combat, but then again Wing Gundam Zero has the most fire power and aerial superiority. If Hero decides to play lame and shoot from super far range the rest of the competition wouldn't be able to do shit in terms of hitting anything in the sky, and Wing Zero can stay very far up to launch devastating blasts.

Starscream turns into an F-22 raptor. Of course he's the coolest.
Agreed ⬆️
The all spark is whatever u make it bc this is all made up nonsense
Excellent explanation loved watching these growing up.
@@lonnieeastin6401 it was pretty much 100% GM product placement. The company even gave the production loads of water-damaged cars to use in the destruction scenes.

The thing is, when Megatron was brought to Hoover Dam he was studied for decades by people only referring to him with the assigned codename. You can imagine the anger when he's released and the first thing he does is say his actual name.
Mind-blowing, great pal!
I find it hilarious
Imagine it, everyone's calling him Iceman and you can faintly hear him shouting 'MEGATRON!' through clenched teeth! (Because he can't open his mouth!)
That actually makes so much sense.

Fun fact, both Shia and Megan were only 20 when they made this, so they were a lot closer to their characters ages when they filmed this then you would think.
Actually, the human forms of the Decepticons were just holograms.
It's so crazy that this movie is over 15 years now.
The first "pilot" in the helicopter in the beginning glitches while none of the rest of it does.
I remember hearing that they had to animate a couple thousand different moving parts for Optimus' first transformations. Also, in the second movie, there's a character that was so complex to animate that the computers literally exploded trying to do it
I'm thinking it helps that the scenes are really quick to not be able to see where every part goes. I remember it was mind-blowing when it came out.
Devastator. His entire transformation sequence caused several computer towers to straight up melt.
And they where SERIOUSLY considering Tom Cruise as Tony Stark. He was on a short list of 3. OMG.
I remember seeing the ironman teaser on the transformers dvd
On the Transformers DVD, there was a preview for Iron Man at the end of the credits as at this time, it was owned by Paramount Studios. Disney didn't buy it till 2009 and their logo wasn't displayed until Avengers 1.
For the transformation shots, each individual vehicle part on the transformers was independently modeled and then allowed to move from it's position in car mode to where it is in robot mode. The scene where the Autobots first revel themselves to Sam in the ally took 72 hours PER FRAME to render due to the amount of CGI components in motion
In every reaction, George gives so much more consideration to the narrative and the consistency of the world’s “rules” than the filmmakers did 😂
One of the many reasons I watch him and Simone.
What do you mean? The transformers lore is concrete and straight forward
To a fault.
@@Flipcrash its as straight forward as a circle
@@Flipcrash In animation, sure.
(EDIT: I think that the only reason the transformers brought to life in this movie all seem evil is so there can be more carnage onscreen, I doubt there's a lore reason.)
Another thing of note is that in most media, human weapons aren't usually very effective against transformers (at least, not the powerful ones), but Michael Bay is very fond of the American military and wanted them to be the heroes.
Love this series too I don't really care what they do just anything transformers is a win
These movies are awesome if you just watch them as pure action movies and don't care about the story.
They also had to because VW refused to allow their car designs to be associated with something as violent as this movie.
@@spongeboymebob771😂
The company founded by Nazis doesn't want to be associated with something violent. I love it 😂
Scale is an interesting question in Transformers.

I always, always forget that Transformers is technically a Marvel property.
@@JeffKelly03 It's not, it was licensed to them. Right now it's licensed to IDW Publishing, IIRC.
@@KthulhuXxxI’m pretty sure IDWs licensing ended recently.

I saw it in the theater and when Prime transformed I did shed a few tears. It was epic.
They had a lot of cooperation from the various military branches, which is why those scenes seems so authentic
The direction given to the AWACS crew was essentially, "Say some technical sh--."
What you mean is, "This movie was military propaganda."

@@DoremiFasolatido1979 I never mentioned Bay.
It looks good because as much was done practically as possible.
Another thing to know about Michael Bay: on the Armageddon commentary track Ben Affleck said he asked Michael Bay wouldn’t it be easier to teach astronauts how to drill than it would be to teach drillers how to be astronauts and he just said “shut the fuck up, Ben”
I liked that you spotted the bug in the scene where he picked the car, Bumblebee was a bug in the original cartoon so it was there for fan service

(Macross + Southern Cross + MOSPEADA)
And conicidentally (?) it also had planes and a starship that could transform.
@@Cau_No Funny you bring up Macross, as one of the Tranformers toys in North America was re-colored Macross jet.
Wasn't there another show/toy line before Transformers called "Go-Bots"? I don't think they had anywhere near the success though.
@@Stevo-xe9jw Go-Bots was a fully American toyline from the now-late Kenner Toy Co. Hasbro bought the Go-Bots property for cheap.
Yeah why would he use anything else his form is superior to any vehicle in earth
Still quite powerful, but now is more dependent on allies to fight off Prime (i.e. the forest battle)
Third film, at his weakest state with permanent damage and an Earth alt form.
Once again, the choice of thumbnail is flawless. Well done

It will always be funny to me that Megan Fox in this movie is the actually level-headed and competent character while Shia is a screaming and rambling madman
Lindsay Ellis's video on her in these movies was *transformative* to me.
This was what annoyed me the most about the switch to Rosie Huntington's character as she was more of a traditional eye candy damsel in distress.
I wish Rachel Taylor could've been in more than just the first movie

My involvement with Fire/Rescue also makes my lightbar legal to have too.
even though the movies get weird after the third one, the CGI remains consistent throughout
but my favourite thing about the first one is how they transform has more kinda impact
"Who's who?"
The Decepticons took almost all Military forms, and the one cop car.
Autobots took all regular cars and the Fire truck/EMS guy.
The volkswagon beetle at the beginning was an homage to the cartoon. Bumblebee was a VW beetle in the cartoons, not a Camaro.

The person that Megatron flicks away after calling them disgusting was a CGI person based on Michael Bay who provided the scream for it.
The original Megatron transformed into a gun. In the cartoon he also shrank so another Decepticon could use him. In this movie they made him into a jet and looks a lot like Skyfire.
Wasn't it Starscream that used him as a gun? I suppose that's good for (80s) toys but cinematically that'd look absolutely ridiculous.
The original toy was a gun until the law was changed to make toy guns illegal. Since then Megatron has mostly taken on the form of a tank or a jet

Transformers Prime added a reason actually, they have an organ that activates a transformation called a T-Cog.
I’m not ashamed to say.. I LOVE the first two transformers movies 😤

Fun fact: When they filmed this movie the new Camaro didn't really exist yet. Except the prototype/concept version.
Actual new Camaro's wouldn't be available until 2009
So Bumblebee's in this movie isn't actual a Camaro.

I was super excited for this movie. While I still have reservations about it, in the theater, I jumped up out of my seat several times to the embarrassment of my girlfriend.
Optimus arriving and transforming to confront Megatron was probably the highlight for me.

@@christiankalk4668 aerialbots, were those the stunt cars that combined like the constucticons?
@@warbird333 AerialBots were a group of 5 planes that combined to form Superion. The 5 cars were the Stunticons, which were their Decepticon counterparts. Can't remember the name of their combined form. StuntiCons were introduced in the same episode of the cartoon as the AerialBots, but an issue or two after in the comics.
Fun fact: The character of Trent, portrayed by the very same actor, also appears in Friday the 13th (2009). Optimus Prime and Jason Voorhees exist in the same universe.
I've enjoyed some of the sequels and would love to see you guys react to them. I cannot in good conscience defend that they are "good"
Bumblebee is good. But it's maybe a reboot rather than a sequel I guess?
Yeah it’s technically a soft reboot, while there are some call backs to the “Bay-former” movies, it’s not in connection to them.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first one, but couldn't watch the Sequels. Thet weren't good or bad, they were just too much.
29:12 the sizes vary based on the vehicle they transform into and their role as an autobot. For example, bumblebee is a smaller bot because he is a scout
The visual effects have aged incredibly well in this film. Not to mention the fantastic score from Steve Jablonsky. Btw, don't watch the sequels.
I absolutely loved how megatrons form is just a completely alien looking jet
The thumbnail is better and has more artistic merit than this whole billion dollar franchise 😂😂
1:36 her reaction to hearing Optimus voice lol shit gives me chill's with every word he says
That was a very fun reaction.
I grew up with Gen 1 Transformers and loved it. The animation was not perfect but the characters had great personalities. I also loved Robotech
I never got to see any Gundam shows but I did have a Gundam model.
As for this movie
Some of the comedy is really great Like you said good cheesy Some is just stupid.
It's directed by Travis Knight and stars Hailee Steinfeld
Hopefully the new Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be good.
Thanks for your reactions! So good, I look forward to all of your videos!
Fun fact: the person Megatron flicks away near the end was played by Michael Bay
Interesting how not many people talk about how the CGI in this movie has aged so well!
Because the story hasn't
Because metal is much easier to make look realistic than organic material
It's just a bit over the top though. Compared to the Bumblebee film, I've heard the Bay films transformations described as "a bunch of triangles and toasters flying around on screen".
The guy Megatron flicks is Michael Bay. Literally.
Hope you guys come around to watch the Bumblebee movie.
Its the best love letter to transformers.❤️
(The Bay transformers arent really...the best or most well liked by the TF community)
I wish they had watched that before this
Here in the US and Canada we didn't get Gundam until the 2000s.
Also there are the Dinobots.
its coming out as a movie soon

This movie is the ultimate guilty pleasure for me! That desert combat scene with the scorpion thing is so freaking awesome!
It's name is actually "Scopinox"
"Bring the rain."
@@prollins6443 Scorponok. It's the name of the soundtrack that plays during the scene too.
@@Hakkar6993 that entire soundtrack is fantastic! Used to blast it in the car 🙂 "You're a soldier now" is brilliant.
@@MartinFransson It is! It's got that epic charm to it, always been fond of it.
I know you guys probably wont read a message on a year old video. But I think it'd be fun to see you guys watch the rest of the trilogy. Some bits of these movies aren't the best, but its a lot of fun seeing you guys react to them
