    Great macro ideas, thanks ! I was interested in this Lawoa lens but to me weather sealing and auto-focus-bracketing are worth the extra money. There is something you didn't mention on your review, portrait shooting. Many photographers actually use the Oly 60mm as a dual purpose lens, ok is nothing like dedicated faster ones. However, since I would also want to use it in that way auto-focus is definitely a plus on the Oly lens. There you go : 3 reasons for sticking with the Olympus.

    Another nice video, Ive taken macro pictures of beer and must admit I did also enjoy cleaning the glass after the shoot, I love macro and already have the OLY 60MM and I will definitely get the new 100MM after you have reviewed it (as there is no way for me to test first where I live)

    Thanks for this review. However, it might have been more useful if you would have made some macro photos outside without a tripod and slide rail.

  • @hnahler
    @hnahler 3 роки тому +1

    I think if I were only to take photos inside with a slide rail, I would go for the Laowa. Neither AF nor weather sealing are required. However, taking shots of plants and bugs outside are so much easier with AF as both tend to move. Well, certainly here in Scotland with the ever present wind. Weather sealing is certainly then a bonus, too. And a 100mm when we get it will make it easier to take shots of bugs as you’re less likely to spook them away.

    Nice lens but the weather sealing on the Olympus makes it a superior lens

    Great ideas and execution - Macro is probably the most underrated speciality in photography... and MFT has it in abundance (... also being underrated)
    The 2x magnification of this lens is a big deal... for a tiny niche. For allround macro use, 1:2 MFT (1:1 35mm) is good enough imo
    Never needed more than the Olys can provide - yet for someone this is a dreamlens. ;)

    A very practical way to achieve 2:1. I'm working with gadgets like extension tubes or reverse rings, but this could give me more flexibility. On the other hand, I hardly ever need 2:1.

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  3 роки тому

      2.1 can a bit too much, but it can do 1:1 so having the extra magnification can be useful.

    Nice review! I own a MITAKON ZHONGYI 20MM F/2.0 4.5X SUPER MACRO MFT which is a cheap fully manual lens. What I like about that is the built, the front of the lens is very narrow allowing natural light to reach the object better. But seeing this review, I might even add this Laowa to my equipment.

    Hey peter! an other question.. In your opinion it is better the 50mm on micro 4/3 (Panasonic GH5) or the 100mm on FF (Canon 6D).
    I have both cameras. The photos I have to take are jewels and precious stones inside a lightbox. Photos that I will then use on my website. Thanks so much!

    The Olympus 60mm has MF only by wire which is sometimes cumbersome for me so I prefer to prefocus via AF and then continue with manual.
    Though I like analog manual focusing on vintage lenses for rapidly moving motifs like insects AF is an advantage.
    I have restricted focus bracketing to situations where the camera is on a tripod otherwise postprocessing may result in a lot of work...

    Hi Peter, great video again!! I like the ideas for macro photography at home very much, and especially the comparison between the Olympus 60mm F2,8 and the Laowa lens. What I found remarkable though is the close distance between the lens and the subject during your shots! Isn't this a contradiction to the mentioned minimum focus discance of 13,5 cm mentioned? BR Erwin.

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  2 роки тому

      The closest focusing distance is measured from the sensor.

    Great video! I'm a niche photographer, shooting wild bees: *live* wild bees, and I'm happy working at a 75-100mm working distance from the front lens. The second-biggest issue, for me, is the trade-off between getting one or two usable captures out of a hundred exposures, or twenty, depending on whether I'm actually that good with a manual lens, or whether I can get AF focus-stacking to work. But the big issue is that identifying species in smaller bees depends on very small features: so this is all about resolution and image definition. How does the Laowa compare with the Olympus M.Zuiko for that?

  • @closeshot7161

    I might have been tempted to add this to my kit if it was a smaller version of their 100mm, but I have extension tubes and a Raynox 250 for extra magnification. Others have even found a work around to use the 1.4x TC on the 60mm.
    OK Olympus - where's the 100 macro? I've been waiting a loonngg time. 😁

    thanks for the nice video!!! what about the light at min. 5.43? seems interesting!
    I have to take photos of jewelry (diamond rings, gold bracelets etc.) with my panasonic GH5. Which of these two lenses do you recommend me? (Olympus 60mm vs Laowa 50mm). Thank you so much!

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  3 роки тому +1

      Falcon Eye F7 RGB light. It is very hard to say which one is better. Most likely you will shoot indoors? Weather Sealing is not needed. I would get the one that is cheaper.

      @@ForsgardPeter thanks for your reply! The Laowa 50mm intrigued me for the fact that
      is the first lens with 2:1 maximum magnification being optimised for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) cameras. I was wondering if this feature is useful and interesting for the kind of photos I have to take. Thanks for your help!

    Tow points in favour of LW: 2x is a lot more useful than 1x if you are really into macro, the all metal barrel construction of Laowa feels a lot more substantial than the plastic Oly. I am not sure if auto focus stacking/bracketing helps macro that much due to focus breathing. This might be a good topic for future videos

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  2 роки тому

      Good point about the focus breathing. Olympus 60mm f2.8 is quite good when using focus bracketing and stacking.

      @@ForsgardPeter Thanks for your advice. In terms of IQ I think both lenses are in in the same league but Oly is the better all-rounder for me. My hesitation is due to the fact that 2:1 is very enticing, barely manageable for an enthusiat like myself. It just might be all that I need in the foreseeable future.
