    I'm not a fan of bokeh and blur, I want my photos as sharp as possible for as much as possible. Thus, I set my camera for makros with ISO 200 as well, but shoot with aperture priority set a f11, which also makes using a flash simple, because I rarely come into situations where there is to much light for flash synchro. However, I usually don't use a flash with makros.
    Additionally, my preferred camera for makros is the Tough TG-6, since I usually don't create poster sized prints from my makros. The TG-6 is not only a hardened outdoor camera, but also a dedicated macro photo device with a max ratio of 7:1 and neat features like automatic photo stacking, which massively increases depth of field.

    Great video! Consider: At times it may be worth trading some resolution for greater depth of field, which will increase if you reduce magnification. Try backing away from your subject a bit and then crop to enlarge your insect subject in post processing.
    Also, is there a way to get magnification or subject distance in the Exif data?

    Hi Robin, First , watching your films about Olympus MFT kit has helped me get a lot more from My M5 MkIII so many thanks for that. Regarding the olympus 60mm Macro lens. I bought a used one from a reputable dealer in mint condition, however it behaves differently to say my 12-45 mm Pro, in that the focus hunts up and down quite a bit before settling in on what Im shooting. This is on S-AF with the smallest focusing area set. Also what are your thought on extension tubes? Many thanks again.

    I heard and understand what you said about focusing, including holding the camera in one hand and the flash in the other. If the situation allows one to use a tripod for the camera, is the touch screen focusing adequate and reliable? (That is, touching the screen at the desired focus spot, which focuses and fires the shutter. Hope I am clear here.) Thanks.

    Hey Robin. Thanks for that video. I like these tiny spiders, too. They are just awesome! :) Which auto focus mode did you use? I think you did not mention that(?). I usually use C-AF on the E-M1 Mk. II and as far as my experience goes the camera is capable to follow the spider when it's moving (works with other macro objects as well of course). Is there a reason you would not recommend doing it like that?

    Is there a possibility to get an even greater magnification with the 30 mm Olympus? Rings and the raynox dcr 250 only reduce the minimal distance but 3.5 cm is already very close to the object.
    I also have the 40-150 mm non-pro lense. Would this lense + raynox be a good alternative?

    Your pictures are really nice. But That‘ s not the way I shoot macro images. I use the same camera and lens, but I never use a flash. I use 1 or 2 leds and always use focus bracketing or stacking. 15 images should be possible handheld. For more pics I use a tripod and shoot then only in Jpg

    Hi Robin, thanks for your great videos and the inspiration! I also love macro photography and your photos are amazing! But I have to say that I am not so happy flashing the tiny creatures. How about using Focus Bracketing and Focus Stacking. Is it necessary for macro photography? And how about using extension tube + manual lens, will you recommend it for cheaper option than buying an olympus macro lens? Thanks before

      As long as you get the spider's cooperation (i.e., it doesn't move!)

    • @Dahrenhorst
      @Dahrenhorst 3 роки тому +2

      That's not necessary, but essential if you want to get a photo of a spider when you want to get everything in sharp and in focus from its front to its back legs. You would need a tripod for this, though (handheld is possible, but that turns into a matter of luck) and hope that the object sits absolutely unmoving for two or three seconds.

    Are you sure about ISO 200 ? ISO 64 sacrifices a little dynamic range but reduces noise a lot. Very helpful for extra sharpening without exposing noise in post production.

    • @mikejankowski6321
      @mikejankowski6321 3 роки тому

      In a well-illuminated photo, how much noise is present at ISO 200 in the first place? That would be interesting to investigate, the tradeoff between noise, dynamic range, and sharpness at native vs. extended sensitivity for a demanding image full of detail.

    • @MrPerskindol

      2/3 stop light for meager benefit is better used to stop down the aperture for DoF.

  • @pault151
    @pault151 3 роки тому

    Hi Robin, nice video as usual. Questions: have you tried focus stacking, does the spider stay adequately motionless for the second or so that it takes? If the amount of flash is small enough of the flash's capacity, will it cycle fast enough for multiple focus points during the stacking?
    Also, what is the actual duration of the flash typically?

  • @nolejd50
    @nolejd50 3 роки тому

    2:28 Dear Robin, from my tests and experience, ISO 100 (even though it's actually an extension) renders and preserves about 10-20% more detail and considerably less noise than ISO 200 on my E-M10 II. I can't speak for other OM-D cameras but in my case that's how it is. I also found some tests online which claim the same statement. Love your work, keep it up!
    P.S. Are you ever gonna review the Olympus M. Zuiko 14-150 f4-5.6 II lens?
