I did it for guitarists so I guess I will give my top 10 favorite Japanese Female Rock/Metal Bassists - 10. Sano Hana (she was a bassist/vocalist before she was a drummer/vocalist before she was a guitarist/vocalist) 9. Ichinose (her Lovebites audition was very impressive) 8. Hettsu (the anchor of Hanabie) 7. Rio (Mary's Blood will be missed) 6. Sawa (would have been in my top 5 if not for the emergence of the force of nature that is my #4) 5. Miho (likely a permanent spot in my top 5) 4. Fami (can't wait to see her and Midori try to out charisma each other) 3. Haraguchi-san (she just keeps getting better) 2. F Chopper Koga (my 2nd favorite female Japanese bassist to watch play, behind . . .) 1. Misa (would be in my top 10 favorite bassists since I have been listening to rock/metal, which is over 50 years) Honorable Mention to Yuki Hirose of Lonesome Blue. I have good feelings about the future of that band.
Oh yes. Kiyoshi is a monster, Wakazaemon also is quite a character. Mina (ex Girlfriend) has serious slap bass skills. Ichinose, Hikaru Yamamoto, Juna Serita, Hettsu, Hiromi, Tomomi...
Great List. Misa and Misaki for tone and creativity by far for me. But, all on this list are great and always when I see such a list it reminds me how many outstanding high class musicians Japan has to offer for all tastes.
Great list that I can't argue with. Best name for a bass player is how I break my 10way tie and the award goes to: Dramatic pause Wait for it. Dramatic paws. Dog needs to go out. Be back in a jiffy. Oh, and wait for it. The award for best name for bass player goes to F Chopper Koga! Sounds so tough, but she looks so sweet. All of these women can play the socks of the bass.
Great list! One honorable mention would be Sayaka from Hagane. Ever since she started putting up some cover/play along videos on her UA-cam page I've come to really appreciate how good she is. Very solid and fluid bassist.
A nice countdown to Misa :) So many great bassists in Japan. I take it you haven't heard of Kiyoshi yet? She does solo stuff but she also tours in bands. Anyways - Misa (then fresh air), followed by Kiyoshi, F Chopper Koga and Juna Serita.
Nice list and many insane players on there! One more female bassist from Japan you might not have heard of yet (or she might be on the list ;) ) is Kiyoshi! You should really check her out! She's played with a variety of bands, even in Matry Friedmann's liveband and is also a solo artist who has released 6 albums so far with everything on those ONLY bass, drums and her vocals. Insane player with insane energy!
@@NewAeonWarlord Agreed. For a time, I wondered whether she would end up getting the Lovebites gig. But she seems pretty focused on her own thing at the moment.
@@johnbedinghaus2390 I would have loved that but somehow I couldn't really picture her with Lovebites. Ichinose ranked high for that gig in my book though!
Some honorable mentions that people should check out: SAKKO - Bray me - Nothing too flashy but a great bassist none the less. Aina - Silent Siren (hiatus) - Would be in my top 10 if Silent Siren was still active. Plays a lot like MISA but uses finger picking instead of a pick when not slapping. Mina - ex-Girlfriend/solo - Another highly skilled bassist that can play anything. Also sings really well. Tomomi - SCANDAL - A great bassist that could fit in any band.
Love your list (even if I have some "less rock-metal" favorites too, but it's your list!), and I really appreciate you chose carefully selected clips, really hilighting their talent - very good work.
Thanks really appreciate it! It takes some time to actually find all the info and clips but i like the end result XD will make bigger charts in the future and will probably include non metal artists as well, sticking to metal for now cause it's the music genre i know better
Some great players there but my favourite is Haraguchi-san - not just for her playing but for her clear, total love of what she is doing. It is rare for her to go longer than a moment without smiling or laughing. She is obviously immersed in the moment with nowhere else to be.
Watch the live Band-Maid videos. They mess with each other all the time and MISA does laugh regularly, the camera does a crap job of catching it a lot of the time though because her hairs is always in her face.

Very Great list! My top 10: Koga (gacharic spin/doll$boxx) Misa (bandmaid) Serina (trident) Misaki (sokoninaru) Haraguchi san (nemophila) Tomomi (scandal) Miho (ex lovebites) Sawa (aldious) Haru (bridear) Rio (ex mary's blood) Similar to your list, but ranked differently😄 The reason why I didn't choose Fami is because she was not a rock/metal bassist, I need to see her situation after joining lovebites. Btw I am very looking forward to see your list of top 10 Japanese female drummers🤘🏻👍🏻
iHi Frank great list, would not remove any of them, all great to listen to. But I would extend the list. I agree with a lot of the people who mentioned Kiyoshi she is a fantastic bassist and a bit of a wild thing when playing live. I am mostly a rock and metal guy but I do like to vary it sometimes and venture into jazz/rock/fusion. So I would add Juna Serita who is immensely talented and Rina Hoshina. Another who I ould add is one I came across only last week in a video of KIYO*SEN from 2018, namely Yukiko Shibutani. Never seen her before but on this she does a bass solo and then Senri Kawaguchi follows up with a drum solo. The bass solo is tremendous (maybe if all you guys are pure metal you may not like it, but I thought it was great), so full of feeling and then groove. Hoping she is still active. If you want to check it out here is the link - ua-cam.com/video/Wkcbp45qadY/v-deo.html Probably my 4 favourites are Misa, Koga, Haraguchi and Kiyoshi
All ten are fantastic bassists. I agree with your number one pick. Only correction I wish to make is MISA is a Libra. I had to say this because I'm a Libra as well. hahaha
Great list. Will check out the couple I'm not familiar with. Hettsu from Hanabie is on my list too. Just so much talent coming from Japan at the moment
Great list Frank! I'm mainly a guitarist but have played bass for over twenty years as well and have been completely blown away by all the fantastic female players from Japan, especially the bassists. So inspiring.
Great list, I was really happy to see Haru 1st up at #10 !! Oh... check out the bassist for Narumi's band Lonesome_Blue and their new video for "Face the Fear" the bass player absolutely KILLS it as you'll see (sorry I forget her name and am too lazy to look it up atm)
Good list! I like MINA too, but I'm not sure if she has a band at the moment. Also TOKIE who is currently the touring bassist with the mighty Boris! 😎 Edit: Must give a shout out to "Hirohiro" Sagane. (I know Tricot aren't metal, but they are one of my favourite bands and I wanted to give them a mention!) 😁
@@gradyshmalady8284 If you like metal but don't like the growling you would love Lovebites. The singing is spectacular and the guitarists are the best. Go watch some of their live stuff like Holy War at Zepp Diver city in Japan.
Just a bit next to it, two bass suggestions for reaction. The first is a real bass empress, but a slightly different style of music, Juna Serita (she played with Tamu in Soramimi). WHAT IS HIP? [ TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI COVER ] ua-cam.com/video/g46tXWxtsfY/v-deo.html And true bass genius Taiji Sawada (R.I.P., bassist of X Japan (then X)) BAKI+TAIJI+RAVEN ua-cam.com/video/quKrtxuYI3s/v-deo.html
They're not metal, I think they call themselves math rock, but there's a Japanese trio called Paranoid Void that is, as far as I can tell, instrumental and produces some fascinating, spellbinding music. Their bass guitarist, Yu-ki, is fantastic. The song "ukiyo" showcases her wonderfully and is worth a reaction.
Yes, Po! Yuki-sama is now expanding to include an Arturia Microfreek (synth.) into her stage and recording work, as you can hear in their latest full release. I was hoping to see them in Tokyo in January, but, I think they got a gig set on 2/5, resting from the UK/Taiwan tour, I guess. Kiyo*Sen (Kiyomi Otaka (Casiopea - keys) + Senri Kawaguchi) is playing on 1/7 then the Big Okyu ji on 1/9/2023. 🦍
I agreed 100% on the guitar players. Bass players in 33.33%. Misa #1 ok, although I would probably give Koga. Fami is a mistake imo. He has a mini-album with various music and a lot of recordings on the channel. I'm sure she's great, but let's give her time to show herself on stage as a professional. Putting her in front of thoroughbred bass players with a dozen or so years of age is like the Nobel Peace Prize for Obama. For a long time I have had 4 equal queens of bass: Misa, Koga, RIO, Miho. Miho and RIO are a bit disadvantaged because they played in bands where the bassist is a bit in the shadow of guitars, great guitars. Despite this, they were able to go crazy at the concert and show themselves strongly. RIO and Miho are good friends, and the most rock and roll girls on this list. Personally, I definitely give the RIO No.1 in the bass sound category. That heavy buzzing growl is insane. And right after the 4, I would definitely give Misaki, Sawa, Haraguchi-san, Haru... We are waiting for 10 singers and drummers.
