Thanks for the idea practicing getting up and down with my pack. It is too hot to hike in the summer here (April-Sept), but I want to get some practice with my pack. This is perfect for me.

Thank you, Joey.🙏. Yep, guilty as charged about watching this video from my recliner while drinking a cup of coffee. 🤣😆😂. But in my defense, I did spend the last three days running a chain saw and then carrying the cut up trees down a long hill, then back up that hill to get multiple armloads of wood. Can I count all those steps as training? 😆
Another great video! It is also high on the motivational chart. 👍

Thanks for this video. I did a 5 hike w/ a 10 lb pack without any issue. Just loaded up my 'real' pack (23 lbs w/ food & water) WOW. Such a difference! Definitely will need to work up to that weight! Living in Central Texas the hikes will be HOT so I'm trying to get the weighted workouts in now so maybe by the time we're over the 100* I can work on as pack+heat as well. That will be a whole other ball of wax with extra water added and extra breaks :P

Enjoyed the video! You are exactly correct. We have found that over 60 you will likely need to build up to an hour of exercise most, if not every day. And it is true that including the pack while training is essential.

Great tips thanks. Absolutely agree with training walking tracks with uneven steps and surfaces really helps. Have noticed those that have mainly trained in a gym havent faired well on the trail. At 71 I try to do at least an hour 4days a week on a rough varied terrain track, noting my time each week, and leading up to multi day hikes, increase the weight in the pack by 2kilos a week, if I have no issues. Also 2 strength sessions a week. ,(Wish Id started doing this at 50!!)

Excellent and very practical, progressive training tips. I hope people take advantage of this advice whether they're planning a thru-hike or not.

You are the first one to mention the benefits of talking to your body that I know of. I thought I was the only one. It is a silent “meditation “ that I do when needed. It has helped me get through minor discomfort as I’m walking or resting. For example , I let my leg know I’m grateful, and that I acknowledge the pain.
Taking a deep breath and visualizing the inhalation going to the affected area has helped me every time I’ve needed it to (from childbirth to knee pain.) I don’t discuss it much and I don’t know why it works, but I’m sure glad to know I can try this and have pretty regular positive results.

‘Talking’ to your body works b/c all sensations are your body giving your brain information so that it respond appropriately (like pain is usually your body telling your to stop doing what is causing pain). Acknowledging the sensation can take the sting out of it and let the sensation be what it is without it having the annoying impact on your mind. The pain doesn’t have to hurt. The sensation can just be what it is without being so loud about it… the volume can be turned down. Acknowledging is not repressing or having a hostile attitude towards, since that just creates more tension (in the brain). Acknowledging, or better yet, having curiosity about the sensation defuses it. Works with emotions as much as physical sensations. I just treat the ‘noise’ as a cute yappity little dog barking at the mailman. Just tell it ‘it’s just the mailman, thanks for being a good guard dog, but i can take it from here.’. If it still yaps, you don’t have to be angry about that fact, just be grateful you have a vigilant guard dog.

Thank you! I will be doing my first backpacking trip and thru hike this summer. As a Colorado Girl I am going to attempt the Colorado Trail. I am working on everything you mentioned. I am having trouble finding the right shoes or boot, I feel like once I get that dialed in I will progress in the distance of my hikes.
