UP has made the world a better place.
I know it's impressive engineering but it's art to me. Steam locomotives are so expressive.
When I hear that whistle I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven! Can’t explain the joy inside my heart & head & soul.
I have worked on machinery all of my life. To see this particular machine restored to full operating condition is....... WOW !
4014 AND 844 in one train? Nice! It's like brother and sister running together...
Christoph Or big brother and little brother. At any rate, whatever you think of it as, it’s fantastic! Thanks Ed, thanks UP, and thanks to the anonymous donor who assisted with the cost of the refitting of 4014.
From the days when the US was TRULY great and our industrial prowess was 'second to NO one'...
Thank you for the amazing video for those of us that can't be there right now!
We are still great and even much improved in certain ways and our industrial prowess is still second-to-none (hence why the Chinese keep stealing from us).
I am just a few years too young to have any memory of these wonderful machines when they were still in commercial use ... So something like this is truly fascinating to me. Maybe six decades too late, but I get to see them for real. Wonderful!! Better late than never. ♥️♥️
Been a long time coming, but glad I lived long enough to see it happen. :) Hard to put into words how great it is to see this.
Well done Union Pacific for preserving an icon of American history.
The sound of a steam whistle is music to my ears :)))
Thank you for such a wonderful compilation of video!! Girl friend can't understand why I've got tears in my eyes... and can't explain it to her.
My friend, you may need to upgrade your girlfriend to one that understands that great men build great machines that evoke deep interesting feelings in real men.
@@thomasboese3793 - and the best sort of real women too ...
lovely to see Big Boy finding his wheels again. he's got a few problems but hey, who wouldn't after 60 years of not doing a lot. regards from across the pond.
I have never been to USA. If I ever go there it will be to see the mighty 4014.
You'd be welcome here. Lots to see for train lovers!
Absolutely I agree do come we would love to have you
Tell me that that is not one of the greatest machines to come out of the industrial age.
Im so sorry i cant tell you that, because it is in deed. Wonderful sight isn' it? 😆
I wouldn't dare say such a thing. But it would appear that 10 idiots (At this writing did). How can anyone put a dislike on this episode in US history. Shame on you all. The resurection of this machine is a feat of engineering in itself. But to have a machine like Big Boy, made in 1941 when everything was calculated with slide rules and designed on paper with pencils and scale rulers, is also impressive. This is a monument to the engienuity of our Grandfathers, their skills, determination to get the job done and the ability to design and then build a machine that can last this long, through tortured years of neglect and disuse.
The Ultimate Steampunk Machine.
This is not one of the greatest machines to come out of the Industrial Age.
@@organbuilder272 - damn right.
Actual tears in my eyes seeing him running.
U r not alone. I used to climb on her at the fair a couple miles from my house. I never thought it would be on the open rails under her own power.
I can think of better things to cry about than a piece of metal.
He's a she. In this case. It is the natural order.
@Legomenon yes it did occur to me that having "boy" as part of it's nickname would correlate to the use of the masculine. But traditionally he's always been a she.
@@Miatacrosser - I'm stayin' outa this ... 😁😁😁😂😂
That’s a fine piece of machinery out there in its full glory. I am from India and just happened to come across this locomotive on the Internet and realized it was the largest ever built. When I got know it’s being restored, had been waiting for the past few years for it to breathe again. That day’s finally arrived. I wish I had the time and money to see it in person. Hope its looked after well. Cheers!!
Congratulations, Ed! You did it. I am so proud of you, and the entire Union Pacific steam crew! Well done!
Ed and his faithful hard-working crew should receive national recognition for what they did. This is the finest example of US know-how - Yankee enginuity, hard at work (Again).
I agree, 100%.
Right on! Well-said!
Thankyou! Been waiting my whole life for this restoration. ( I’m 63) I fired a steam engine when I was young on the New Hope and Ivyland Railroad in Pa. So I have hands on, but nothing as great as this. Thanks again for the video.
I was at the signal in Cheyenne and the crossing by Soldier Springs. I have a cold, but it was SO worth seeing that incredible piece of Union Pacific’s heritage
I hope the steam exhaust cleaned your cold and made it more bar able in that cold wind.
A great emotion to see this extraordinary and unique work of engineering, "resurrected"! Thanks and Congratulations to the Union Pacific.
For many years standing idle in Pomona fairplex , the Big Boy 4014 , even sitting in the drivers seat was impressive the 4014 king of steel , to see it in working order is a great achiefment for the rich industrial past of american railroading , greetings from the Netherlands .
To all you American's... I say getting things like this "back on rails" is what will truly make America great again. Thank you so much from an Aussie who admires those American's who were around when BigBoy was first made and America was a Truly great country to be admired.
To make America great again, you need to make sure the world admires you again. Please make sure this does happen again.
The world needs a truly great, and peaceful America.
an historical event with the thousands of rail fans out there
I cant imagine the amount of power those two combined are making. They could pull any train in the world
So when will they cut loose the SD70?
My grandpa was a steam engine drive wheel machinist for UP in Laramie. Had a good job through the great depression thanks to UP. My Dad was a fireman for a while, between Laramie and Cheyenne was the scariest in high winds, still is. I remember rabbit hunting with my Dad on Pumpkin-vine road near Laramie in the mid-seventies when a steam engine passenger train blew by us. Fond memories for him, amazement at its speed for me.
Nice footage! Not just the train, either. I'd forgotten how beautiful Wyoming is.
These videos make you proud of Union Pacific and our great country! “Highballin” it’s the way to go😀!
A beautiful orchestration of mechanical engineering, The X ternal steam engine is a real joy to watch. Well done UP!
this is not a train this is art, poetry, build be men with just their hands no computers no cad machines but with their brains and hands over a century of american industrial power
I always wonder if people even cared how awesome these were back in the 1940s?
Probably not unless, like myself, they stood beside the tracks as one of these came thundering down the rails. An event you will never forget.
Absolutely there were many that cared not just in the 40’s but for their whole life from a very young age. My father born in 1911 literally took thousands of photographs of all aspects of railroads with the engines being a constant inspiration.I talked with many who are now departed that were in awe of the steam locomotive. They were not rare but nonetheless they were appreciated!
The Big Boys helped win WW2 in the Pacific, in a major way !
What a giant! I never expected to see in my liftime one of them rolling with its own power. Luckily my expectations werde wrong. Her Majesty is back on the rails. Immer gute Fahrt, alter Knabe / have always a good ride, godd ld boy!
Excellent compilation! I'd seen several of the bits previously, but there were quite a few new ones as well, particularly the pacing sequence. Nice to have it all laid out in sequence. If you're only going to watch one video of what happened yesterday, this is definitely it, so far. Well done!
youtube exploded with this beautiful notice,i watched all the videos. fantastic.
Thank you for compiling this. I enjoy watching this. Love sound of her whistle a cadence of her side rods.
I just cant get over the fact. This is not a 1950's video of the Big Boy. This is a 2019 video!
Magnificent beast of a machine !!
She is soooo beautiful, thank you guys and gals for rebuilding her.
Would love to see more video footage from inside the cab.
YES
The BEAST Lives!!! 😲👍👍
I just HOPE she's coming through Tucson...
It's a boy
Great video, fantastic job. Thank you so much.
AMAZING! Simply amazing!
Didn't think i would ever hear that whistle again, long time coming but so worth the wait! :)
UP could have spent all the money they have I the bank and not have gotten better weather for this. When they green lighted this project, someone was seeing those wide open blue skies, the scattered clouds, and the sun reflecting of the fresh black paint.
Thank you and it was just amazing to watch and beautiful..
That blowing of the whistle was AWESOME!
And everyone said it would never happen. Glad the King’s back.
Wow, is this train huge! What a monster!
2 Big Boilers running 300 psi each...
oh boy good to see you again
Beautiful , It is amazing to see this Hope I get to see it !!
Anybody else noticing the spectacular big skies and scenery? Some places so flat you can watch your dog run away for a week?
Thank You from Bend Oregon
It was a epic occasion. We chased yesterday up to Laramie and the crowds were insane! Every walk of life, and almost every state and several foreigners were there
great photography !! I even got to see the empty grain train I was on. . .going east.
Finally someone chased it, but it's not in HD. And if I could drive 1000 miles up there to do an HD chase, I would. Dear, Norfolk and Southern, allow this thing to come to Knoxville so I chase it.
Amazing to see one back on the rails. Well done to all involved from downunder!
FASTER-FASTER-FASTER, OPEN THAT BABY UP!
I guess they need to take it easy on the shakedown run, but I hope at some point they run that boy at speed, fantastic machine.
Thanks for the video.
I just subscribed to your channel and hello from New Hampshire
this is amazing, but even more so!!,it would have mind blowing,if by chance one,or both of actual 4-4-0s that was at the promontory transcontinental ceremony would have been preserved and still in operable condition, now that, would have been off the charts!!!!

@@GAUDINAudrey No sorry about what?.I'm trying to make sense of this.
This is like me on a hard farm day... i am 6'3" , reportedly a strong able worker. I wake up ready to go and get it done. Then my 6'7" son with his better joints and bigger muscles mosies in and says" Yeah let me help yah dad"... Wow what a sight!
Then it hits you that the Big Boy is OLDER than the 844 [1941 v. 1944].
As a kid, i would just stare and wander all around 4014 when it was displayed at the LA county fairgrounds. I was amazed at its size. To see it run again is a thrill of a lifetime. I hope they come down to Southern California soon. I've seen 3985 (watched it turn on the Pedley wye) and the 844. If and when I see 4014, I can die a happy man
charles bontjes Did you hear of the agreement UP has with Rail Giants at the Pomona Fairgrounds? Apparently they will operate a 4014 excursion to So Cal as partial consideration for them donating 4014 back to the UP.
Your take at Laramie is very good!
This is not a slam. What is that metallic “rod knock” type sound I hear from the Big Boy at higher speeds. It’s clearly there. I didn’t hear it coming from 844. This is a huge day for all rail fans like myself. Best thing UP ever did. Thumbs up!!!!
Great to see her finally running again
True on that. Great to see him @@Frisco-si2jh
He is a big boy not a girl
Awesome this is great.
Magnificent!
I love what you've done and want to thank you for sharing that here.
As an amateur photographer I can tell you picked your spots carefully. No choice but to shoot toward the sun. You managed it well. If you don't mind some advice. Just slow down your panning action and I won't end up with motion sickness. For the close ups, I usually pan with the direction the train is going by focusing on one spot and move the camera with it in focus.
Hey, keep it coming. Not bad, not bad at all.
Great engineering machines.
Awesome!!!!!!!
I love how throughout the vid 8937 is like "Why am i here these two old timers can pull five times my weight alone, and they have way more experience than me running trains....", 844 is like "Come on pops pick up the pace a little, it seems like its taking forever...." and 4014 is like "You young'uns shut your pie holes and let me get my wheels back, i've been nappin for 60 damn years! Don't need to run like a bat outta crazyness the first time out, sheesh!"
i think you summed it up nicely.
A beautiful sight (but there is a bad bushing in one of the drive rods)! You can hear it clank as it is going by! I will be watching Friday. It's my birthday too!
The Atlas of the rails lives ! ! !
11:30
I just got the chills
Beautiful
Absolutely, wonderfully, the perfect sound to fall asleep to. Everything is right with the world!
I believe america just got much better now. Magnificent sight! 🚂🚃🚃🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
Cracking stuff!! :-D
Thanks man, not able to make it to Ogden....
I have never seen a train UA-camr have a intro like that
Still has that pronounced clank in the stbd side of the lead engine. Hope it's not doing damage to rod/crankpins/joints. Looks like they got the steam leak of a few days past, at the gland on the same side of the same engine repaired/sealed. Bon Voyage!
Pretty neat somebody took the time to add the "Big Boy" in chalk on the front smokebox plate. Just like the one in the factory decades ago.
Looking back to other double headed excursions this one is definitely number one but there hasn’t been a better one since either 844 double heading with 4449, 844 and 3985, 611 and 1218, 765 and 1225, and 2102 and 425 on those runs.
And the sons of Pullman porters, and the sons of engineers
Ride their fathers' magic carpets, made of steel
And mothers with their babes asleep, are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel
Yeah, I know not the right line but still, it does remind one of the times.
Absolutely!
Since the Union Pacific ran a "City of (fill-in-the-blank)" passenger train systemwide, I say for the 150th we just rename the song for the year.
@@thomasboese3793 My grandfather worked on the MKT. I remember the Rock Island, especially the Golden lines.
All I can say is wow
She is a beauty.
THANK YOU UP FOR A FEAST OF STEAM POWER
Amazing how powerfull a 80 mack IS TO GIVE dynamic braking against the big boy to work it with a load and to test the pull power
In the first part of the video the test run.Great to see it in service ---please UP bring it to VA AND Md..
This is definitely going to be the year of the locomotive if I'm correct there's another big steam engine coming online this summer I believe it's a 2662 a Western Maryland Scenic Railwayv
Micheal Guy oh the Skookum locomotive is getting restored on the Niles canyon railway and in May 11th it will run with another mallet.
Don't forget Santa Fe 2926 in New Mexico.
The 7470 up in NH should be done very soon too.( Grand Trunk Engine)
You gotta turn your phones sideways to give the right aspect to these. Would have been so much better to show more.
Great work you stayed dead even with him long enough to confirm what I thought I had heard on some of the other films there is a rather loud and unsettling "clank" coming from what I believe to be the rear engine on 4014! Has anyone else noticed this? Or am I just hearing things? It would make sense that they discovered the cause of the noise but did not have the time to correct it before the big trip to the golden spike event and possibly might be why plans were changed to double head instead of traveling independently. Any thoughts pls LMK, BP.
Seems kinda hard to believe that the tender behind 4014 has been behind the two largest operational articulated steam locomotives in the 21st century.
Silly question but is it always being pushed everywhere by the diesel on major journeys? There seems to be a big lack of steam but other vids show it really pushing it out?
Maroon Skygod...... The diesel is usually there to provide extra braking power with the dynamic braking, however - in this case, it is also there to help push on the grades. Not because the 4014 can't handle it, but Ed wanted to put 450 - 500 miles on the 4014 Before leaving out for Ogden... he was never even able to get 100 miles on it... partially due to the gland packing issues in the front engines cylinders on the break-in run a few days back and had to be pulled back to the shop from Nunn, CO.
It is 435 miles from Cheyenne to Ogden (on the UP mainline)... if all goes well with no issues en-route to Ogden, UT.. and everything checks out before they leave Ogden, then he will start working it a little harder on the return run to Cheyenne on May 12th.
(2stroke diesel power) said it best. But also Remember that there is a lot of flat ground right now but what until you see him going through the mountains and people start posting him going through the mountains that is going to be a sight.
Makes sense, thank you for the responses Gents. I'm in the UK but hopefully will be able to see this wonderful feat of engineering one day.
Maroon Skygod l
About the whistle at the start, anyone tell me, was the first guy having issue w/that sound? It sounded off. And was the 2nd guy breaking in the sounds that it could make??? I loved watching that!! A total art form. 👌♥️ I’d sure like to try it😌😂,
a dream.
I read that off sound is normal until all the wet steam is cleared out
Thanks for bringing us this video. I'm curious to know if when you were following along with the vehicle, did you clock the speed of the locomotive? I've ridden behind the 844 a couple of times from Denver to Cheyenne and we were clocked at upwards of 70 mph.
okmrocksU....... All I can tell you is that judging by the movement of the side rods he's not working it too hard, 45 to 50mph maybe. Ed said a while back that they were wanting to get it all done soon enough so that he would be able to put a good 500 miles on it After the break-in run, Before they were to leave-out for Ogden.... that did not happen, in fact they were not even able to finish the break-in run with the 8937 pushing, due to excessive steam pressure leakage on Both of the front engines cylinders, especially the right (Ed's) side (gland packing).
They wound up having the 8937 pull it (in reverse) back to the shop from Nunn, CO.... they didn't even make it to Greeley, so he's "running light" on the throttle until they get some good miles on it and know that "all is well" before he "leans" on the throttle more.... better safe than sorry, they've spent more than 16 times what they cost to build new in 1941 ($265,000. = $4.6 million ea. in 2018/19), they sure do not want to risk destroying it.
@@Romans--bo7br Looking at the ground going by in the video, it looks like they may not be doing much over 40 mph. I figured there would be some break-in time and that they were running it slower for that. I was not aware of the cylinder leaks or that it was pulled back to the shop from Nunn. Thanks for the reply.
So Ed Dickens and his team overhaul an engine over 5 years, little time left for them to test run/break in or familiarize themselves with best operating nuances of this particular engine and to cap it off under the eye of a gazillion cameras and media armchair experts...
I wonder if Ed or the steam team have any gray hair or hair at all ?
Whatta testament to these guys, if id been in charge poor old 4014 would have blown up like the Hindenburg...
2Stroke Diesel Power Thank you for the informed reply, I’ve been wondering what the cost has been to UP on this. I know what it’s like to rebuild airplanes from the 50s and the costs, break in and working off the squaks is a big one. I can’t imagine what it’s like for this engine while learning to run it under the eye of so many.
2Stroke Diesel Power Yikes!!! You’re saying 4014 resto costs are over $72 million?
Big Boy can go 80 mph, but they are just going 30 mph just in case he can't keep up
I really hope we get to see some revenue runs from 4014, like the video taken way back of 3985 pulling the 143 cars of freight. Show the diesels what true power looks like.
Are there passenger's on the train if so then how much did the tickets cost
What can one say Absolutely SUPERB lONTG LIVE STEAM
They should get the Big Boy and the ACE to move a revenue freight.
