Stunning early morning views. We all love Big Boy and have been waiting for him, but always remember the distinguished service record of 844. She was never retired from service, went through a rebuild, and has been heroically carrying the banner of UP's dedication to its steam tradition while we waited for Big Boy.
Absolutely. Little sister is taking a step back while giving her big brother the stage but you nailed my thoughts exactly. #844 has kept us steam and railroad fanatics happy for several years and has been a workhorse for UP. A beautiful locomotive in her own right.
Excellent raw footage. The poor old American Flag is flying in the wrong direction on the Big Blow tender behind 4014. The blue field with stars is always leading in the direction it's traveling.
Steam locomotives helped build the USA. What an incredible peace of engineering. 4014 isn't even broken in yet. Give her three months and hopefully we see her hauling a profitable haul of coal and lumber.
The government treated the railroads like crap after the war was won. Taxed most of them out of business while subsidizing every other form of transportation. I doubt if they even tested his breaks to any real capacity. I suppose that's why the SD-70 is there. The diesel may be doing most of the breaking while the kinks are worked out in 4014. I hope we get to see this beast do some real hauling someday.
I assume the SD-70 is there for as you say dynamic breaking but seeing as how they are babying the Big Boy on this journey, I suspect the diesel is doing the lions share of the all breaking at this point. And a wee bit of pushing up Sherman and of course back up power in case everything went wrong. So far so good!
Does anyone following this have a good long range drone to catch this train at Curvo? It is accessed from private land, so a drone would be needed to get there from the east end of the tunnels.
There is no sound of the pistons in the cylinders. The sounds you hear if the locomotive is operating perfectly, are from the drain cock on the bottom of the cylinders for draining condensate, the chuffing of the exhaust, the scream of the 2 dynamos that provide power for lighting, the panting of the air pump, possibly a hiss from the water injector, air brakes, the roar of the fire and the hissing of various little leaks. The pistons just slide back and forth and you don't hear them above all the other sounds. Why would you in any case?
I wish the Union Pacific would make a movie and make it public from the day they pulled the 4014 out of the park and the progress until it ran under its own power
Good Grief - The banging rod is louder than ever. Why ? 4:50 - the picture of all pictures. 3:27 The ideal sunrise. For a long shot - 6:21, Another 8:32, 8:49, 9:26, 10:47, 11:01, 12:49 There was some beautiful photography in that run. But the clanking sounds like trouble. Con rods shouldn't clank - something is too loose.
Charles Bohn yeah Erie had S1 Alco Berkshires they were better than the Lima versions and better than the Baldwin versions they can continuously stay at 90 miles an hour and they were smoother on the track work the Erie Railroad assign them the Mahoning division which was the hilliest part of the railroad
Yeah but they also had functioning water towers and other needed supplies for its time along the way. My guess of what cars are behind it right now is one set for 4014 maintenance and another set for 844 maintenance. Believe me I am savoring all the footage of these locomotives.
How many miles are they covering each day?? Three days out and they're still in Wyoming sounds like they aren't going too far each day. This thing must be "loafing" with this tiny load. Are they using all four cylinders?? I get the impression they are only using the front two.
You know what I was wondering? Why the hell is the diesel engine needed? It seems overkill even paired with an UP 844. Is it for a smoother start or something?
To provide electrical power for the train, and to provide braking in an emergency. Also I've heard that they use its dynamic brakes to simulate proper load for the steam locomotives, but I don't know if that's true.
@@davidsmcwilliams Oh i see. Thanks for your answer :) As far as i know, the diesel engine was definitely used as a load when UP 4014 was tested, but that's a more understandable situation.
yes for overkill, whats that a combined 14,000 horsepower- 844,4014, and the diesel--and 9 passenger cars??? the diesel is there for assisting the 844 cause 4014 is being run easy cause they are breaking him in-its expected after 1000 miles (warranty runs out!!) that they will be working 4014 hard. also the diesel is there to use its dynamic braking on downhill stretches, an if the inevitable were to happen--to rescue the whole train if necessary. now, has anyone seen if the diesel has a M.U. cable hooked to the back of 844's auxiliary tender??
Great video but I have a couple of questions. 1. Are Big Boy 4014 and 844 oil burners and the cars behind each engine an oil tender? It appears for the most part up until about 12:00 Big Boy and 844 were not producing and wheel torque? At 12:00 it is obvious that they were producing engine torque why is the EMD in the consist? I love the horn on these old bubbas :-) Great video and thank you
er1073 Actually both of their tenders are giant oil tanks, so the yellow cars behind them are the water tankers. 4014 currently has 3985’s tender because its tender has not been converted to an oil tank yet. The diesel is there because the Feds say that trains need to have dynamic brakes, but you need electric motors to have dynamic brakes, so they add a diesel to it just for the brakes.
@@joshuarodrique2096 no fed laws requiring dynamic brakes on a steam powered train.the diesel is assisting 844 only and using its dynamic brakes to make the whole train go downgrade a whole lot easier!! without the diesel, every downgrade the have to use the brakes, there would be smoke billowing from the passenger cars after a while. a lot less brake shoe changes on those passenger cars.
Lou Galli...... Where have You been?..... of course it looks "brand new", because it is (basically).... its been in the Cheyenne Steam Shop since 2014 for a complete tear-down, rebuild and upgrades after the UP gained repossession of it from the Rail Giants Museum in Pomona CA in 2013. This is the first time it's been under steam since it's last revenue run from Laramie back to Cheyenne on July 21, 1959 (60 yrs ago, minus 84 days) and last blew it's whistle at 1:50AM at the end of its run, indicating "stopped".
It's does not making any sense it's about 300 miles across Wyoming and Union Pacific X4014 and 844 on the second day still in Wyoming, both should've bend already in Utah. At the second day. Plus watching the videos it's easy to see they running those steam engines slow like they got a led up their butt. Their not running at least 60 m.p.h. you can see that

4014 and 844 making history now

Best footage of big boy thus far

844 is part of the meet in Ogden. The diesel is there to provide electricity for the cars behind and for dynamic braking.
