You don’t know how much this means to us. We are in our 70 s & can’t go out. We rely on Utube. We both love trains.
A lot of people don’t realize what an achievement this is. Thank you so much many times over.
I'm hoping you are watching this in 4k on a compatible large screen, with some good sound.Talk about almost being there. :)
YES; We just made it up on Amtrak/rental car. You tube is such a great service
And your comment is priceless. May you y'all continue to get younger everyday and may God bless you y'all with good health and happiness. 🌹🚂
God bless you both! So glad you are able to see this - this is truly a remarkable thing - Big Boy 4014 lives again!
I'm in my 70's as well and have fond memories of the end of the steam age. These people did an amazing job! It's great to see it funning again.!
Just fan-freaking-tastic. The world should never be without large, functioning steam power, even if it’s just for nostalgia. There’s something almost alive about that beast. Congrats, Mr. Dickens, on a gigantic job well done!
Taking it easy the first 1000 miles so as not to void the warranty on an "As New" 4-8-8-4! Best video coverage yet - Thanks!
this is the correct answer. i comment upside same.
maybe better than new

I feel so happy, touched, until my eyes tear drop to see that my favorite steam locomotif Big Boy live again and become the legend
Note how Ed's hair has turned white during this ordeal. A brave man to undertake the restoration of a neglected and abused engine. What a job Mr. Dickens and his crew have done to restore this beautiful machine to working organ.
What a beast of beauty, very few will understand how much work it took to put this Marvelous monster all back together, thank you for a beautiful video and thank you Union Pacific for doing the impossible
I remember going to the railroad museum with my grandparents and the guide saying these would never run again. Im so glad he was wrong
I've been a fan of steam engines since when I first saw one in 1957 when I was three years old in New York city where I was born. It's pretty amazing since that memory was seared into my head. The monstrosity of it literally amazed me. I've been a collector of railroad memorabilia although I haven't found much yet, just a 1940's conductor (?) lantern that I found a company that sells parts and I bought a kerosene tank a wick assembly and made it functional I also have 2 1942 glass insulators from a wooden pole cross arms. I am very happy to see #4014 brought back to life. I hate to see things of history disappear into piles of rust.
Can dig it! My first encounter with steam-power came at age 5 with the very last of the Reading Rambles in late '64 -- that T-1 was like some living, breathing (and very noisy) dinosaur to me!
ua-cam.com/video/34pGOhrUFg4/v-deo.html
In '67 (at age 8) clambered awestruck on & around a defunct Big Boy at the original Steamtown in Bellows Falls, VT and... *mind = blown.*
ua-cam.com/video/g2N4RaGvGRc/v-deo.html (see_3:30)
Now at 60 I can't quite believe what I'm seeing in these vids, the sight is so improbable. They can't convey, though, the gut-level effect of this machine's commanding presence!=(Or am I still stuck in a child's overawed-viewpoint?)

Cheers.
Thank you for showing the interior cab. Would love to see the firebox.
All right let's put all hope for the 3958 4-6-6-4 Challenger to be next for the journey to be fixed and join with 4014 and the 844. Build America Union Pacific.
I finally did it. I finally broke down and turned my pockets inside out and bought a USA Trains G gauge Big Boy #4014. It is slightly used, but with tender loving care, I hope to have her looking as new as the real one here in this video. Aw, I've wanted this locomotive for decades, but just couldn't justify the expense. Seeing this video confirms that my decision was a good one.
How can anyone not love this locomotive? It literally is big. Powerful and with enough moving parts to go from here to the moon and back. The Big Boy, to me, represents everything we Americans really stand for. We just lost our way, that's all. However, we need to find our way back. This locomotive might have been left for scrap had it not been for so many people. People who came together because we all love trains and we all love this locomotive, affectionately known as the "Big Boy". Its amazing to see something this size, this huge moving along the steel rails.
I sincerely hope & pray where ever Big Boy goes, people will gather and remember........
American greatness is not dead, but alive!!!

Ha! Good thinking. Now THAT’S making America Great Again! LOL
Brought a tear to my eye when the engineer yanked the whistle chain, and Big Boy let 'em know he was back.
It appears they are putting a bit of a load on her now, starting to hear her chug and a bit of wheel slip in one shot. Fantastic locomotives and video, I saw 844 a few years ago.
Very cool interview with Ed Dickens and ride along.😎
• Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂🚃
Thank you for sharing - Greetings from Norway and a fan of the Big Boys (having seen many of them in person on visits to the USA)
Makes our UK steam loco's look like toys, magnificent locomotive all praise to the restoration team.
I would almost kill to have 844 shipped over to France to have a proper race against Tornado along the tracks the TGV normally runs on. Regulators wide open, full passenger consists, let's do this. US v UK Steam Race 2020!
God knows we'll never find out how fast 844 is on home rails. FRA speed limits put an end to that. We know she'll hit said limits without even trying, though...
@@TestECull 844? Pah! Your french locomotive *DREAMS* of keeping up with 'er!
@@Astrophysix1 Tornado's actually British, and was built brand new about...ooh, 8 or 9 years ago? Not a restored antique, not a well preserved unit that never got restored, she's brand new.
She featured prominently in a Top Gear episode wherein Jeremy Clarkson fed her voracious appetite(ish) while May raced her across the isles in a 50s Jag and Richard used a 50s bike.
Great ep. Worth a watch.
FWIW I do think 844 would outrun 'er.
@@TestECull Actually, FRA limits (79 mph typically) can be increased. We currently have Amtrak going 110 in some places, with more to come. Brighton/Virgin Trains USA is eventually supposed to do 125 in Florida.
If the track is in good enough condition and the crossings properly dealt with, the only thing necessary is to have a properly operating Positive Train Control system, which is now being rolled out nationwide. Of course, you would need to interface the PTC with the old locomotives. The requirement for an automatic train stop or slowdown system was made back when these locomotives were originally in use.
@@Astrophysix1 I think the suggestion of France was made for the tracks, not the locomotive. The French have some of the most awesome high speed rail lines in the world, with all double track (good for racing) and the locomotives could go side by side, full out with no artificial limit on their speed.
Super unique views from the inside of the Big Boy, just amazing. Others are superb as well. So happy to see her alive again powering away with the train!
"Good Morning America How are ya. Don't You know me I am your Native son" Such a feeling that song gives watching this video. True the song is about the City of New Orleans by the Illinois Central. However It about the feeling of Riding a train and the unique experience one gets from the rhythm of the rails. Just like the big boy it a feeling that i am glad to see return. Nothing like the sound and feel of the rails.
She is soooo beautiful, thank you guys and gals for rebuilding her.
Hold the phone in landscape when shooting video it comes out a lot better on youtube.
I agree. The horizontal aspect shows much more and is compatible with TV, computer monitors, etc.
better still don't use a phone on you tube the images are to small/rectangular and waste good footage. No camera no recording plz.
No kidding. I couldn't believe he did that.
Thank you. Lots of YEARS of this being said, some people STILL just don't get it. LANDSCAPE, NOT PORTRAIT! Learn it. Use it.
@@mattblack9069 thats dumb. anybody should be able to record with their phone regardless if they have a high quality camera or not.
Man I can' get enough of this stuff. 844 almost looks like a toy next to Big Boy but that machine is awesome by itself. much credit and thanks to Union Pacific.
Can't even imagine what it must be like to be there! What an adventure! Thanks for sharing it!
That's such an amazing sound at 1:05. It's breathing deep! It's good to be ALIVE! You hear it several times throughout the video. I never get tired on that sound.
Cylinder cocks are open to vent any water that's built up while the engine is stationary for any length of time. You'll see it every time a steam loco leaves somewhere it's been sitting a while. Always amuses me when I see people wanting to get in close for pics who obviously don't know what's about to happen, lol.
Thank you THIS IS A VERY AWESOME VIDEO . THAT IS A BEAST . IT IS SO COOL THEY BROUGHT IT BACK TO LIFE . THEY ARE LIVING MACHINES . YOU CAN HEAR THE AWESOME FORCE OF POWER AS IT PASSES . AND THAT MOURNING WHALE AS HE PULLS THAT CHAIN . WOW !!! IT GIVES ME CHICKEN SKIN TO HEAR IT 👍👍✌✌

I really enjoyed seeing this beast in Junction city Kansas last year....🖐🏽🖐🏽🖐🏽😀😀🖐🏽🖐🏽🖐🏽
gigantisch einfach gigantisch und total schön. Vielen Dank, dass Sie das gemacht haben und uns tolle Fotos von dieser Veranstaltung geschickt haben
What a great video. Saw the #844 go thru here a few years ago. What a sight!!!
Now we need a triple header without diesels hooked up, 4014, 3985 and 844. Let's do it!
I think 4014 has 3985's tender.
I think 3985 is undergoing major maintenance for the next several years. Also Pcorf Creations above is correct! They will need to Refurbish 4014's tender also by then.
If they do do a triple header my guess is 844 will lead the train with 3985 in the middle and 4014 in a rear of the heading
Along with daylight 4449 and sp&s 700
What UP needs is a dozen more coaches. Vistaliners.
Thank you for your recording of this great event. Like the on-board cab shots. Please remember for future, Landscape rather than Portrait for Railroad photography.
I like how even behind 4014 844 is still working hard she is pushing and pulling while 4014 is on break in
Worth the wait. beautiful. next step, all 3 together.
844 looks like a Corvette trying to push bump a Winnebago, 4014.
What a rebuild job! It looks better than new.
@jonny j It’s better to say nothing at all than to make rude and unhelpful comments. You can do better than that.
Thank you, thank you; best video yet!! More, more ....
9:27 Did I just see wheel spin on a 600 ton train? Yes, yes I did :)
thanks for the up close and personal cab ride.pleasant an safe ride to you all.
WOW. You can hear 4014s chuffing sound real well from inside the cab or it was 844. But still so amazing. Man I wanna get into the cab of this engine

Congratulations for an amazing job. Fantastic to see it back in steam.
Their majesties are back on the rails. Wonderful!
Rebuilding America... One steam locomotive at a time. Thx UP 👍👍
Well people you see the future of American Railways right there. And what an impressive sight it is.
Robert Brugh , rather than the future this is a reminder of what it was like in the past when steam was king . This is the refurbishment of a classic steam loco that no one thought would ever happen . We are indebted to UP and all the craftsman that were involved . We in England love our steam locos and we fully appreciate steam from all over the world .
Kenneth Hume forgive my strange humour my friend. He is indeed a grand Loco. And a tribute to all who worked on him to bring him back to his former glory. But as a cryptic remark, by the looks of things the way the US is heading. You could well be heading back to tha days of steam!!! and blackpowder!!
@@robertbrugh8426 along with those russian locomotives 2te10m coming to america soon.
rear speaker just a question for ya. what are they burning for fuel? crude, used oil or diesel? In New Zealand we still use coal to a major extent. Our Ks n Js I believe use oil, mainly used oil. what class is x844 behind BigBoy.
@@robertbrugh8426 These restored engines run on oil now, 4014 had to borrow the tender from 3985 since the tenders are identical but the 4014's tender hadn't finished conversion from coal to oil. 844 is a 4-8-4 class engine (compared to Big Boy's 4-8-8-4)
Awesome video just awesome. Words cannot justify how amazing it is to see this view.
The UP 4000 Big Boy class had a worm screw from the tender to the fire box to feed it fuel and could consume up to 20 tons of coal an hour pulling heavy freight thru the Wasatch Mountains. Handing off its cars to the UP 3000 Challenger class was typical once it made it thru this range as the faster locomotives could handle the freight more efficiently on the Plains the UP travelled. Only one other Big Boy was ever oiled fired and it's the 4005 at Forney Museum in Denver but it was reconverted back to coal after testing it briefly to see if it was more cost effective. In its heyday the Big Boy could pull a train 5 miles long on level track unassisted and the 4014 spent nearly 60yrs on display outside in California and can be seen briefly in several movies like 1980s film BlueThunder. The first state line the Big Boy 4014 crossed after being restored in Wyoming was Colorado at night on a test run and the massive engine came and went from Weld County before rail fans caught on the next morning.
I think it was only 4017 who was oil-fired, it failed so they reverted him.
Absolutely excellent! Thank you for this vid!!
No 'cornfield meet'! So, I guess that was a good day! lol :)
Que alegria ver a Big Boy de volta à vida!!! Espero poder vê-la face a face um dia desses. Maravilha!!!
Awesome machine and good video but Please in the name of God Tell that engineer to put on a (kromer) engineers cap stripes prefered! That is old school the engine deserves it....
Now if 8937 was switched out with 6936 that would be a sight to behold. The steam monster and the diesel monster, power to spare.
now that is a great idea!!!!!
@@rearspeaker6364 Ditto that!
Awesome!! And that whistle is quite something! :-)
Although, unnecessary use of the whistle is prohibited. Still nice to hear it when necessary.
Good stuff! Love the open country as well. :-) A sight I'd never have thought I would see in my life. :-)
That explains why they are going slow.
I thought that might be the case.
Great job on saving these historic iron horses!!
Thanks for good video ! At time 6:39 it looks like two big boys with a yellow car in between running together; think it is big boy and another "844" doubled at head of train.
Incredible job people! I wonder if solar panels could be incorporated in some way. I'm not an engineer by any means but I was a kid in the 50's, lived close to a railyard and spent a lot of time watching and dreaming. I'm glad others are making those steamers come back.
Solar panels? It is already powered by the sun. Oil is decayed plant matter which got its energy from the sun.
Must be difficult driving 844 with its taller drivers behind 4014.
Serious question why? They double head 844 with 3985 all the time. Can't they just adjust the throttles on each so they are at the same speed? ( I don't know anything about driving these things)
The Big Boy is back. Thanks for the video
Making BigBoy Great Again! I never thought it would happen.
It is difficult to appreciate just how massive they are. 844 seems to have a piston rod issue as well!
Sure is a smooth rider. Some of that is due to smooth track. Some of it is due to the massive moment of inertia. A lot of it is due to highly competent running gear balancing both in design and in the rebuild.
The track is great in this part of the country. Mostly straight ribbon rail on the high plains with easy grades except in a few places.
Thanks for posting. Great video.
This is surely an overpowered excursion train!
The diesel was not assisting the train in anyway. And 844 was doing most of the work. They also want both 844 and 4014 at the Ogden, Utah celebration and what's the fastest way? A doubleheader.
If they work 4014 like they sometimes do 844, in the 'off season' she'll be running freight. And if I understand the US Transportation commission, until modern safety options and features are added (if added), a diesel locomotive is required for compliance with regulatory policies. If 4014 does run freight at all, it will probably be limited areas. I saw a view of the cockpit that suggested there are digital sensors and gauges along with a communications display for track information.
Yeah it should have been longer
just slightly overpowered......................................especially considering they have to drag that diesel around!!
Fabulous video, thank you for sharing.
The most brilliant idea ever: to film the Big Boy upright with the Handycamera ....
Steam locomotive Conductor uniform 101. Heavy duty cowhide gloves are a must! Hat is optional but recommended...
844 is a real talker!
Just chugging away.
9:29 Wheelslip on 4014's front unit brilliant!!!!!!
The greatest 3 seconds of BigBoy footage so far.
SO MANY Levers !! It is amazing
Your lucky your company footed such a big bill.we still run steam in the east.
we need more railroads to think of public relations outside the box!!
Need 1218 back to double head for sure
COME TO BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT. WE WOULD LOVE TO WELCOME YOUR POWERFUL STEAMING THUNDER LIKE IN THE EARLY 50'S
Some days more to all the pieces will have the correct adjustments and the big boy will run only she. in this tests 2 locomotives(1 steam and other diesel) help a little. Is logic, the rings may adjusti to the cylinders, the bearings, all the levers, valves, etc.
huh???
Antonio Dávila
It’s called breaking in. Just as you do a new car.
Please put lots of red white and blue led lights under big boy. Would make his wheels and running gear look awesome at night.
Why not more cars for the break in? N&W 611 pulled 20 Pullman’s on its own first time out after a 20 year break no diesel in the consist and that was in the steep Virginia mountain country.
All the other cars are currently spread out across the system so they could only stick with what they had.
@@silverstatehighiron Thanks for the info. I didn't know UP ran other passenger excursions besides the steam program.
I say after the break in, shoot for the moon. According to the 1984 National Geographic special, "Love Those Trains", the Big Boy locomotive could pull a train that is five miles long. Staging that stunt would surely get a few lines in the papers!
So I guess they're double heading the first runs of 4014 like they did the challenger to break it in. Plus it puts on a good show. It sure looked like they were taking it easy on it. Then they can go back to the shop and go over it good to make sure it's good to go.
Videographers know to Hold the phone in landscape when shooting video it comes out a lot better on youtube.
I hope they bring her out west would love to see it
I would love to see one of the DM&IR Yellowstones back on the rails!
Which one would you pick? Personally I'd like to see the 227 currently inside the Depot Museum in Duluth. She's been indoors for many years vs. sitting outside exposed to the weather and probably the best preserved.
@@mountainmanwannabe9495 I assume that 227 would be in the best overall condition, but it has had some theft issues, like the master steam pressure gauge that went missing. Unfortunately, It's probably a moot point because no one in MN has the steam shops required to rehab an engine.
Except for the folks who insist on holding their phones in a portrait/vertical format, this is a great video. I've wondered if people who make portrait videos also mount their TVs sideways.
@ 9:26 = Steam powered burnout (wheelspin of the first engine) just in case you were wondering how powerful these steam engines are.
I gonna do this in 7 1/2" inch gauge of The Great Race to Ogden with Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 and Union Pacific FEF-3 #844 at a house in Byers, CO. This house has 2,283 acres.
How lucky you have to get to actualy comandere that big boy. Im so jellous xD
Is it just me, or was 844 pushing 4014 at the 11:02 mark? Please don't misunderstand, I'm thrilled to see 4014 up and running and I will see it in person some day, but did they bite off more than they could chew for it's maiden voyage?
correct, and the diesel was also.they may have, but they are breaking her in now because they ran out of time to do it before the trip.
@@rearspeaker6364 This is true as far as the break-in period goes, but it would have been easier to mask in a traditional double-head. All in all, I'm excited to see 4014 running, and they'll work out all of the kinks over the course of this year.
Thank you
I wish I could be there!
Nice catch 👍
I do think it quite amazing that Ed knows how to drive this thing, when has he ever done it before? Can you just go from one steam engine to another that simply?
That's a good question but since he was in charge if the restoration and probably knows every nut and bolt my guess is he can drive it. I would assume driving it is basically identical to driving 3985 and perhaps he learned on that.
first video of 4014 wheel slip in 60 years
Awesome... Wish I could have been there.
Was 8937 just along for the ride, or as a 'just in case'?
yes "J.I.C."and its giving a push for the train and the dynamic brakes come in handy for the descents--no need to drag the brakes. that being A.C. traction, the dynamic brakes can go all the way down to 1 mph.
@@rearspeaker6364 Thanks. I thought so. Makes perfect sense.
Wonder how many decibels in the cab at 80 mph with the windows open LOL?
good question, i bet you need earplugs and ear muffs.but how many of us want to be in the cab of 4014 at 80 mph??
Rip Big Boy Union Pacific "big boy was my favorite train until I saw the ultimate santa Fe.
Da Sie nur Dampflokomotivführer in dieser tollen 4014.Führ sein wollen, ist der Lokführer sicherlich ein großes Ereignis, auch wenn ich denke, dass es nicht einfach ist. Aber er macht es einfach toll.
Great!!! A quesion: why is there always a Diesel locomotive in the train? The weight does'nt require it.
ua-cam.com/video/ESzh5qmPGDs/v-deo.html Go to 23:20 and Ed explains it all.
Do they have 2 qualified engineers when they go over the road?
1 qualified on the engine and 1 qualified on the section of track they are running over?
Bob Snyder: The man sitting directly behind the engineer running the 4014 is almost certainly a "pilot engineer," an engineer who is familiar with the section of track over which the engine is operating. There will probably be several of these people, as the engine is run over several parts of the Union Pacific in the future.
@Paula Johnson the govt thinks 4014 is a huge, dangerous locomotive?? naa, its just a little kitten!!!!!
now to see 4014 and 844 drag 200 intermodel cars for a revenue run
now that i want to see!!
Is it me or is there a lot of rod noise coming off the 4014 - is that normal?
4014 should be able to roll coal twice as much as 844 since it is twice as big.
they are still breaking her in- until the 1000 mile mark, then its out of warranty lionel's warranty.
This and the Challenger were converted from coal to consume oil right?
Yes, coal is too difficult to load without coaling towers and the other coal infrastructure that has disappeared from the railroad landscape. It is also more of a chore to fire, even with screw feeds. They add more moving parts as well. Coal is not as plentiful as oil and it puts out a lot more particulate into the air. It’s fire is also more damaging to the firebox and leaves highly acidic residues on the steel grates and bottom. Oil fires from a burner, similar to the fan blown residential oil burner. The flame, when the draft is well tuned, does not inflict as much punishment to the firebox and the fuel is more completely consumed midair. Refueling is a matter of hooking a fuel truck’s hose to the tender and saying “fill ‘er up!” and the tender holds more fuel mileage in atank of oil than in a similar hopper of coal.
That’s why switching over was a no brainer. Your enjoyment of the engine doesn’t come from seeing it consume any particular fuel, so there is no real downside to it.
Awesome just awesome. Wish they'd focused a little more on the controls. I see they added a radio. Must be battery powered.
So, why 2 steam and 1 diesel? Was the diesel/electric along for back up? They sure didn't the power
davep6977 pretty sure the diesel is for dynamic braking.
Great to see the inside of the cab. Can anyone tell me, is this locomotive still fired by coal, or has it been converted to burning oil?
I do believe it was converted to oil as the 3985 was way back when. I think it is easier to operate them that way in all respects as to running and supplying the fuel.
