Probably take it back to the shop, work out anything else thats needed to be done or fixed, and then probably give it the same usage as 3985 has had. Speaking of which, 3985 should be beginning its overhaul soon, or whatever it is that has to be done

844 is providing most of the pulling power because of testing and they don't want to break 4014 because she still needs a little bit of work to get all the issues out before it does a regular excursion. However the diesel locomotive is only there like Mark said is because of Dynamic braking and to provide power to the passenger cars
If you could find the original cars she pulled back in the 30s and 40s when she was built if they haven't been scrapped then you could use just whats called a Brake van at the end of the train.
Well, that's how trains are normally run in America because they're extremely long, especially freight trains. But in 4014's case, it's still at the last steps at troubleshooting and finding possible issues it had at the inaugural run before it could serve at its full potential. Hopefully it'll pull those 100+ cars alone, and that takes 3 to 4 diesels to carry.
UP 4014 will never pull a train on the mainline without a diesel attached only because of dynamic braking and power to its passenger cars that is the only reason there is a diesel locomotive attached to any steam consist. Back in the day before diesels passenger cars were powered by steam produced from the locomotive. UP 844 is only there because their still testing 4014 and because they don't want to break her on her first big move in 60+ years

For the 1st time since 1961, The King of the Rails moves under his own power is Union Pacific Big Boy Locomotive 4014.
Hopefully a 844/3985/4014 tripleheader in the future is possible!!!!!

Why is there always a back up diesel locomotive?
Mainly for power to the cars

If big boy breaks down.
The diesel is for dynamic braking and power for the cars.
If you have the 844 in the drive train, why the heck do you need that damn diesel ?
I belive they use it for the generator, dynamic braking GPS, etc. Don't need it for power.
