  • Kyle goes through what owning one of the shortest range electric vehicles is like. The Smart ED is a small, affordable (lease), electric city car that can do a lot more than you would expect! From hauling the dogs around town, to offroad / snow adventures, and even carrying Christmas trees on the roof, this little thing does it all!

    I just discovered your UA-cam channel and videos about 2 hours ago. Your videos are a lot of fun to watch and I learned a lot in this video that I did not know. I never thought about leasing a car until you put it into terms that make more sense. 5K to own a new car for three years without any maintenance bills. Hmmmmm! The only concern I have is that this car might not hold up well to Chicago winters. Especially since the city puts a lots of salt on the streets each winter. Would that also give you the same sort of concerns?

    I have a 2011 Brabus smart Fortwo Cabrio (bought new 8 years and a month ago) and it is honestly the best vehicle I have ever owned. It's so nice to hear someone else who has driven Teslas and other great vehicles enjoy smarts as much as you do. Interestingly enough, mine has almost all of the same positives and negatives you've mentioned. It's amazing on the get up and go and we race past people who rev their engines at a red light (0-60 is about the same as the ED). The handling is extremely tight and feels very natural, and the turn radius is remarkable. Though, the cloth roof is so noisy on the highway and the headlights are so bad (thank goodness the 2020 smarts have LED lights). Ours is gas though but has 42 mpg, costs less than $20 to fill up with CA prices, and we've easily taken it 92 mph and have no problems controlling it because my car just likes going fast. It's gone almost 70,000 miles and counting. It's an amazing little vehicle that is so much bigger on the inside than the outside.

    You don't worry about having to pay some sort of fee if the car shows a lot of wear when you return it (dog scratches, hair, odor, etc.)? I leased my first electric car recently and it's been fine, but I've been super careful because I don't want to be anything on return. P.S. I have smallish terriers and they can jump into the back of a huge SUV without a second thought. My friend's golden has to be coaxed into the same car.

    @stadleroux 4 роки тому +1

    No, man! You say the electric version is so much better than the gas-powered smart, but then you seem to be comparing it with the previous generation gas smart, which did have a slow automated gear change. I haven't driven one myself, but the people with new generation gas smarts with the new Twinamic dual, NOT SINGLE, clutch gear change all seem to think it's infinitely better than the previous generation, as the gear change is great, the car is much more stable in crosswinds, etc, etc. One reviewer on UA-cam said the Twinamic dual clutch is as good as VW or BMW's dual clutches any day of the week.
    I LOVE my previous generation smart just about as much as you love this one, in spite of the sucky gear change and one or two other things, so I'm gutted that they've stopped making them in gas-powered configuration altogether, because I was really looking forward to getting a new demo model in a year or so. But please, apples to apples, not fresh apples to old and wrinkly ones! ;-)

    • @OutofSpecMotoring
      @OutofSpecMotoring  4 роки тому +1

      I’ve driven the new gen and I do agree it is better. Still I can’t understand why the gas powered version makes sense over the electric, these aren’t good road trip cars... so get the better drivetrain for city use (electric)

    • @stadleroux
      @stadleroux 4 роки тому

      Out of Spec Motoring Hahaha, OK, I guess my standards ito luxury and comfort are a little lower than those of most people, because my other vehicle is a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, and it was my daily driver for five years before I got the smart, and before that I'd never really owned or even driven a really luxurious car for any length of time either. I in fact LIKE the smart for the odd road trip, because in certain respects it's the most luxurious vehicle I've owned. It's the first with auto as well as manual shift, and I use both in different conditions, and with paddles, no less, and it's the first with cruise control, to mention only a few comforts.
      It was in fact quite funny how apologetic the salesman was when I went looking at it.
      “You have to open this front cover for topping up fluids by flipping these two latches.”
      “My Jeep also has bonnet (I'm in South Africa) latches.”
      “The ride is a little choppy over uneven terrain, due to the short wheelbase.”
      “Just like in the Jeep.”
      “It's pretty susceptible to crosswinds because of its relatively high roof level and, again, wheelbase.”
      “Crosswind? What crosswind? (Cape Town is infamous for its crosswinds over the main freeways into the city.)
      “The road and wind noise is pretty high.”
      “Pffft, not if you're used to driving something shaped like an outhouse, with sound insulation to match.”
      I think I can say with reasonable certainty that I'm driving two of the most impractical vehicles on the road today, but I also like to call the smart the most efficient fuel-saving modification for the Jeep! An electric version would obvviously be even more efficient in this respect, but I'd only consider one if Mercedes were to increase their marketing budget for smart pretty significantly in the near future, because at the moment it's just about zilch. We get both the forfour and the fortwo here and the forfour is rare, but you do see the odd one on the road once in a blue moon. I don't know if I've seen more than one fortwo in the past year or more though and with this kind of sales I don't know if they will last more than two more years here. Commercials are nonexistent. A salesman did tell me earlier in the year when I went to enquire about them that new battery technology was going to be introduced in 2020 that would just about quadruple the range, which would be really great, but I won't hold my breath for that... 😳🤔🙄

    I'm looking at a used 2016 Smart Car EV. Being an EV owner, though, I am aware of how important charging practices are in preserving battery life. For example, if a car is allowed to fully discharge and/or frequently charged to 100%, the battery life can be severely degraded. Likewise, frequent charging between 20-80% can help prolong battery life. Given that a new battery pack can cost upwards of $20K, it would seem that some sort of check of the remaining battery capacity, perhaps as a percentage of original capacity, would be helpful to know prior to purchasing any used EV. The Mercedes dealership that is offering the car for sale does not seem to understand what I am asking for. (I might add that the owner's manual recommends a battery check as part of annual maintenance, but no maintenance records are available for this car.) Can you advise how I might independently check the health of the battery prior to purchase? Am I worrying about this too much?

    • @OutofSpecMotoring
      @OutofSpecMotoring  4 роки тому +1

      I agree with your points but the smart’s battery packs seem to hold up really well to abuse and unfortunately there’s no easy way to check degradation on them. I wouldn’t worry about it

    3:30 Something doesn't add up. How are you getting a lease for $5k on a $30k car that depreciates to "$5k in just a few years"? Are they assuming most people will buy at the end of the lease? Is the resale value perhaps higher than you're estimating? Perhaps the main value of the car is the battery pack and the deprecation is not as bad as you're thinking.
    4:30 I don't understand the logic here. You're paying $5k regardless of how much you drive. How is that free?

    SMART cars are no longer for sale in Canada. I couldn't own one anyway, too many kids.

      Two kids and two EVs. Smart is great for my commute. Rarely drive both kids to the same place, if so we take my wife’s Tesla.

    $5k for 3 years. I'm not seeing why your 4500 Smart EV isn't a better deal economically. It would save you $5k.

    The only way this make sense is like you did it, because for 30k you can get much better than that toy car, like your used Model A 85.

    @4m15s: "...10,000 mile lease..." If you pay more than $5,000 in fuel (over 10,000 miles), then you're paying $0.50 per mile for fuel. Hmmm...

    Did you say the lease 10,000 miles for only 3 years? Not many miles for three years. only 3,333 per year. Averages to only 9 miles per day. Even 10,000 miles per year would be 27 miles per day.

      @@OutofSpecMotoring That's not too bad. I prefer to be a few more miles. I might have to check into it just to get around town. When I'm not on the road. . I've been looking at Electric vehicles lately, I currently drive a Dodge Ram 3500 4 x 4 dually long bed with an extra hundred gallon auxiliary tank. . I haul travel trailers for a living with it and it currently has 834000 miles on it.

    Nice cars but far too expensive for what you get, especially in comparison to other EVs. If you can lease one, it might be worth it, but otherwise look elsewhere for your EV dollar.

      @@OutofSpecMotoring Well, I'm comparing new-to-new. But, yeah, if you can find a nice used one or a good lease deal, go for it. (58 miles would not work for me as a range, but for many people it would be fine).

    You do realize that you'll have to pay for cleaning and damages that are caused by you when giving it back? And let me tell you, Mercedes dealers are vicious when it comes to that

      @@OutofSpecMotoring your dog is not comfortable in the car. While the car is moving, the dig is trying to counterbalance sitting on it's hind legs. Hence the reason it's always trying to lay down.
