I have a 2014 Smart ED and have driven it 95 miles on a single charge, primarily on secondary roads but averaging 40 mph. In winter I can go about 65 miles tops and only using heat to defrost the windshield when needed.
As a cheap 2nd car for errands this thing could be amazing. Dirt cheap to fuel, almost no maintenance, quiet, zippy it could make a lot of sense for a lot of people.
I own a 2006 Smart Fortwo cdi and I love it! I've done long road trips from Edmonton to Portland and back in it... Love this clip!
The cdi is a brilliant machine, I've owned mine from 5 months old, it had 1983 miles on the clock, it's fast approaching 150000 miles now and it just keeps on going, it won't break any speed records, but it's great to drive and fill ups are few and far between
Cute lil bugger! Wanted to see it trailered to the top of the mountain pass and regen down the hill!
I love how they just say Smart-Car every single time:
Europeans be like: That's a Smart Fortwo god damn there are other models available :D
A friend of mine had a blue/silver Forfour 1.5 100 hp, gearbox with electronic actuator, and big sunroof.
That was frikin fun do drive.
A true pocket rocket.
Noisy engine, but it took of pretty fast.
That’s because there is only one variant in the States , some people call in it Smart for two but very few
@@minibx6659 But that's like saying the Chrysler car in Europe xd like Pacifica is a thing right?
Go Tweety! " I taught I taw a charging station! I did!...I did taw a charging station!"
Thanks guys great video. I own a late 2014 version in the UK. I Love it! Was just looking for videos and came across this by chance. Kudos!!! I get 80 miles in summer and 60 in winter. Would love to see a longer unedited version of this video. Thanks.
Ps. Europe had 22kw charge option.
Great video and I am surprised you made it through the Eisenhower Tunnel, that's a steep uphill grade.
I absolutely love my 2015 electric smart car, I drive it daily 18 miles to work, lunch and back 42 miles daily with the AC on on my way home and have 25 miles remaining.
This car is a true giggle machine in the city with the acceleration.
@@danisantos3255 my car had 30,132 miles when I bought it a year and a half ago. Now it has 42,586 miles on it.
He didn't make it the Eisenhower tunnel.
The tunnel photographed is barely outside of Denver.
I have thought about buying a Fortwo EV to compliment the gas one I already have. But when the EV battery will no longer charge up then the car would be useless. Parts only. Your videos are skillfully done. Thank you for your efforts.
I'm starting to really love these type of range videos oh and also the comparisons between gas vs electric range tests
When the battery gets to 0%, you still have 5 miles reserve. I did 16 miles when the dash said 9 miles.
It's ok on the battery if you take it down to dead because the BMS cuts the power, not the battery being low. There is still enough power in the battery to keep it happy.
If you do run the car until it dies, when you charge it, it probably won't drive even when the battery is full. You have to pull the service plug from next to the SAM, leave it a few minutes and refit it. Then the car will reset and will be fine. I have run my battery flat on 1 occasion and after that, it actually improved the overall battery capacity.
Thanks Roman and Tommy! Once again another great video!
Great vid. How far would it have gone if it was trailered to the charge point, then driven from there? It would be more equivalent to the ones 'topped up' there.
I wonder how my little Spark EV would do on that? It's got CCS fast charging and I can get about 50 miles out of it on the freeway before I need to rapid charge it.
I’ve had my smart for over a year now. As long as you understand its limitations, you can really exploit its strengths for cheap driving, easy parking, and excellent maneuverability in tight spaces. Jealous you guys have the model with shifters to adjust regen. That’s a pretty rare feature for the used market from what I’ve found.
I've been looking into these for awhile even before the gas price craziness. Now they have almost doubled in price.
Have you considered going the other direction, East, and testing Tweety's range on flat roads?
I used to like driving I-70. Now it's always a sh*tshow with the traffic.
Never drove that road, never heard anything good about it plus it's by denver so I avoid it just like I avoid I-25 like the plague.
I live in Denver and this review is super helpful, as I have family in Nederland. Thanks!
150 mile range and it would fly out the doors in most countries.....pity
With today's battery technology, that should be possible. However, these things were built with Tesla's cheap slap-a-bunch-of-18650s-in-it technology. (those modules are convenient, but heavy and low power density.)
Steven Barrett ...Not to worry, the Electric SMART will survive!... Apparently GEELY is already working on the new modern Electric SMART!... No doubt, the range will be more than 200 km. GEELY own 50% of SMART! 😁
꧁Toni Crvnts꧂ ...Quite the opposite, SMART is everything but dead!... Why would GEELY make such substantial investment in SMART when they wouldn’t be convinced that they can make SMART into a huge worldwide success !? The timing is just perfect as Battery Technology has just improved to the point that the capacity of the same size has more than doubled !!! 😁 And for the time being the SMART-EQ is available with all the features of a modern Mercedes-Benz!... plus a range increase of 25%. 👍🏻
Man I love your guys videos even though sometimes I know I comment harsh and get very annoyed when you try voice activation systems. But these videos give such nice vibes and is relaxing and exciting to watch especially with Tommy and Roman.
Great test and great video! You should have turned of your blower for extra millage! When turned of your millage immediately changes on your display! Keep up the good work.
Let me know when you sell it, I have a motor route and this would be perfect for it. Great video as always.
I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm sure Tommy's diligence with range extension helped, but 10 more miles of rand than the EPA range is very impressive. Especially for a 5 year old EV.
Hey at the end of your testing with this thing, maybe you could look into upgrading the battery?
There are a ton of other "early evs" with early inefficient battery tech, and if they can be upgraded they would fit a lot if people's needs just great.
So if you could give it a try and test the results (you already a baseline) and see if its worth it, I'm sure many people would be interested in that.
Who knows, maybe you could add fast charging?
I wonder if you tried on fairly level ground how far you could have gone.
I have one and at one point was doing 80 miles, but the deal is you have to kind of stay under 45mph. At that speed you lose about 10 percent every 10 miles
If they kept the speed to 45-50mph, maybe 100mi. To go highway speeds (70+) it needs to be drafting something big. I once did over 60mpg @ 65+ behind a truck for ~100mi. (hybrid, of course.)
You should have taken it all the way to empty. If the car has a feature to cut itself off and then still let you drive into a parking space it's not going to be totally dead. And how heavy could that car be to get onto that trailer. Plus it looked like even with the super low state of charge you still had two out of three kilowatt power bars which means that it probably still had some more reserve. Considering it went over the rated mileage and going up those steep hills that is really impressive I would not call it a failure. The rated miles are for super flat terrain which is much more efficient. Really glad to see you testing electric cars!
Happy Father's day to the TFL crew!
You guys have anything and everything content wise one could imagine absolutely love you guys keep it up man dont stop coz if you do just know there isnt anyone else to fill that gap
I have a 2016 Smart ED, got it last year for $6000(had 16000 miles on it) from a MB dealer, great city car, if I'm not getting on freeway with 75mph, it always gets 80+ miles on single charge, I don't even need to charges it with 220v.
Awesome review of the Smart For Two.
Thanks for another amazing video. More with the smart. Making me want one.. could you compare it to a used Nissan Leaf similar year. The price tags are similar.
If you have a steady downhill a hypermiling trick is to put the car in neutral, it will gather speed and use next to no charge. Regen is great and all but its not 100% efficient at recapturing energy, better to use the energy to gather speed instead.
I love my 08 fortwo, love it for driving
I think you guys made a good and failed at the same time. The electric Smart Car is intended for city dwellers not for folks that was to long distances on highways or up steep mountains. When traveling through Paris 5 years a go a I saw a lot of these cars in the city. And whats interesting is that were they park on street there is a charging station, unlike in North America where you drive to charging station. :)
im an odd ball so id like to see how it drives in a city setting. drive it to Denver and back... you guys had that Hemi hybrid and never once used it for how it was designed. to help with city gas mileage
"If you had to take it to the mountains you could" but you wouldn't make it back out of the mountains.
Anxiety level about 9/10 watching that but was cheering for ya! Still very enjoyable. Was waiting for it to run out right in front of the Coors plant, that would have been tough.😂👍
You should have towed the car to the top and see how much regen you get
Great to see a Colorado channel
The SOC and power gauge (most likely) are able to turn so they don't have to manufacture a different part for markets that drive on the other side of the car, look close enough and you might be able to see how the dash can "easily" be swapped to the other side from a manufacturers standpoint
what are you doing with tweety next offroad? are you keeping it or selling it?
I had a 2012 gas and I loved that little car.
Battery health on EVs is very important component. It’s not recommended to charge past 80% or deplete the battery below 20%.
And you should budget 10% to ensure you make it to a charging station. Before going below 20%
This leaves only about 50% of useable battery.. on EPA 68 miles. That’s about 35 miles...
Pro tip for getting the most miles on highway: tailgate a semi. 👍
I have a 2017 ED and it gets about the same-80 miles on a full charge. But it definitely doesn’t take 6 hours to charge. I park it at the city’s nearest free Level 2 and leave it for about three hours. I’ll have to test it to see exactly what the charge time is.
That Buojos they mentioned is usually pretty packed though. lol.
I like to just drive to black hawk and charge at the monarch casino.
I have no problems in my 2018 Chevy volt. get there. charge for a few hours while we eat and gamble. come back down.
what a creative idea for an electric car video 👍👍
I believe you are right, if range was better and charging rate faster, many would of been sold. I'm looking for an EV, just not sure if it will only be a work commute or much more. If for work travel, this would do it as I only travel 40/day. I'd like to get the Smart just to have one too. Great Vid.
Happy Father's Day Roman!
Nice video Tommy/Roman , you would have easily gone further if there was no construction zone, how much i do not know, when new some one blog i was reading here in Canada one blogger was saying he got beyond the rated EPA distance always unless they ran the A/C his claim was 82/83 miles with 5/6% battery left and most EV companies say never left it go below 15% I am considering one of these used for my commute to work in the summer months and my Volvo in the winter months, my drive is all highway, totally flat and the distance round trip is 50 miles so it will easily do it and we have the cheapest hydro rates in North America and my employer is going to be installing plugs in the next year , we are on a direct line from 7 sisters hydro electric dam shared with rolling mills next door to us so the commercial user rate is like 3.2 cents/per kilowatt hour and would be payroll deduction for me which would be awesome, i am surprised no one in Germany has come up with a way to convert these Smart cars to be able to faster charge even if it was 50% faster, so instead of 6.5 hrs , 3/3.5 hrs is a huge difference and when the battery needs replacing the new one will have at least 25 % better range and capacity this i don't doubt now i just have to find one here in Canada at a decent price, great video 👍
been driving electric for years, i love my electric kia
I drive about 24km per day for a regular commute (12km each way)
Had you towed the car and have it regen with wheels on the ground, you could've got back all the range if towed long enough. It's probably also lot quicker than L2, maybe even quicker than fast charger.
TFL, needs to bring the smart fortwo ED to Cherokee North Carolina and drive up and over the Blue ridge to Gatlinburgh Tennesee.50 miles total, 25 up and 25 down. (US 441 north)
I did this in a 2008 smart fortwo gas model, and used only 1 gallon of gas.
I was engine breaking the whole way down.
People have lead foot or green thumb . Tommy have EPA approved green foot. Hitting that 100% on eco mode. Good job guys . I dont even like the car or have use for it but watching you guys makes me wanna buy one.
If they could fit a 50KWH battery with fast charging in that go kart, it would probably be one of the best cars in the world. Would be a hoon mobile
I drive a Smart diesel, I would like an electric Smart but I cover 74 miles round trip each day, I always go to work in the dark and come winter I also drive home in the dark, there's no charging points on my route either, so it looks like it's an oil burner for the foreseeable future for me
US 6! I am on that road right now in PA.
This reminds me of a Seinfeld episode...driving the SAAB until it ran out of gas.
Not very often you see an ev exceeding the mileage there rated for. I'm debating on getting a 2018 fortwo prime
When you realise this Smart fortwo weighs 1085kg and my 5 door Peugeot crossover weighs 1050kg... 😂😳
@@rubenbraekman4515 so they are pretty equal when it comes to weight for what they both are,Peugeot are cool we had some back in the 70/80's 504's sunroof big enough to put a couch through 4cyl, 4spd manual duel SU carbs and stupidly comfortable, best seats next to my Volvo 240 GL, it towed my brother in laws race car on a trailer thousands of miles one summer and never overheated he had to do the clutch and cable in the fall and it held a steady55/60 mph until a hill then 2nd gear, helluva car, they didn't like our Manitoba winters -35 celsius , i think i will buy a used Smart EV
2 dr for summer time, i have known some owners that have the ICE versions and drive them 150 kms/day and love them , i think they love the economy, my drive is 80kms/50 miles round trip so its lots for me and we have super cheap hydro and cheap car insurance its a win win 👍

I'm curious about wt distribution. Will it go better fwd or reverse up incline...if it has power to break traction
Hi. How much do you pay for the car registration? How many years is the life of the battery? Thank you.
Too bad Smart rekt their reputation with the anemic engine and clunky SMG and only managed to match the fuel economy of a Civic. If it had been an EV from the start, Smart might be around today.
This thing also weight only a little less than a Civic and people drive them like hoons all the time, or at least where I live
Mostly it decided to be small for the sake of it, if it had been a normal size like a civic it could have had a chance with more than "quirky" people. It has exactly half the passenger volume of a civic while costing much more.
Nope. These were ridiculed for their size from day one. Everyone had to blather on about "how you'll lose against a semi in that thing", when you lose against a semi in anything.
@@grandtourerpt nope, they fully left the U.S. market after the 2019 market year
when going downhill you should actually try to coast as much as possible instead of regenning, its more efficient and it would surely give you even more range. so instead of driving in D+ you should go downhill in D- and let the kinetic energy do its work when going downhill
or slam the car into N instead of D when going downhill and gain speed while spending literally 0. the manual does say not to do this when going downhill but whatever.
I think I would buy just for fun. Might not be a Tesla but it's electric. Here in Australia distance is a bit of an issue. But around the suburbs a winner for me.
What is the song you guys used in the Loveland Trails intro?
The fact that you did so much highway driving hurt the range. I get my best range when doing city driving (around 100 miles without the heat on). The traffic actually improves your range due to it not using much electricity when stopped. Drag is proportional to the square of the velocity.
I also had a 2015 Smart ED. When new I could get 92 miles before it quit. (All city). How much battery degradation does it have? At the end of lease the buyout was $18,700, plus the battery lease of $5,400. I offered $10k. Mercedes said no. You have a good car.
I have a 05 smart cdi it gets 70 mpg in the summer
I like the car men, but can I driver it from NYC to Boston and back same day?
damn, I didn't know smart used 3 lugged wheels. I thought those didn't exist.
Entertaining video !👍
4:31 that is one seriously heavy Pringle
Great experiment
You should have put the Land Rover and trailer in front of the smart car. If conditions required loading it onto the trailer and there was no shoulder, well just stop in the lane and put the ramps out. It would make for a lot quicker loading.
The smarts would work well in small cities. I remember my dad bought one that was supposed to be a go car in Baltimore Maryland but the company went under. We still have the smart. I drove it from Maryland to Florida. Wasn’t bad.
You guys really NEED to try out the fiat 500e. You’ll love it way more than that Smart Electric.
John Edwards yeah it is and honestly I feel like it’s a lot better than the smart car.
I've had both. The Fiat does have better range and acceleration, but it's not nearly as well built and it handles worse.
You should have towed it with the Tesla.
@@SDav21 I could answer that question, but I wouldn't be helping you to develop your thinking skills if I did. Instead, I'll give you a little homework assignment. Think of a reason or two why towing the Smart car with the Tesla would have made it a more interesting video. Here's a hint: Think science fiction.
@@rzu7120 Is your name Dick by any chance?
Anyway, use your thinking skills. Watch a video as to why a tesla is not good at towing:
ua-cam.com/video/S4W-P5aCWJs/v-deo.html
Thought you had at least some level of intellect to explain why you believe a tesla will tow better than a Land Rover. Especially since you gave zero reasoning.
And if your reason was electric with electric, well then you should use your "thinking" skills.
A video will be easier for someone as immature as you to watch.
Before you decide to act like you're switching someone off or try to sound like whatever you thought you would sound like typing that garbage, maybe do some "homework" yourself. Too many damn immature "adults" on the internet these days. The video might go over your head though. It's not really meant for someone with the intellect of a 2 year old.
@@SDav21 Apparently, your homework assignment was too much of a challenge for you.
When are the mudboggers getting installed?
What are the prospects with modding this thing? Maybe upgrade to a higher capacity battery, add a second battery, or both to maximize driving range...
Wow! Pretty impressive
You don’t need lunch and dinner to fully charge this Smart. On a level 2 it charges to 100% in 3,5 hours. Not fast but lunch and a nice walk would do. I am the proud and very satisfied owner of a 2014 and 2018 Smart EV.
For seven grand you can get a JDM Kei cor. Mostly a truck. That would be a decent match up
Will EQ Smart Cars For2 and fire come back to the U.S. in 2021?
Fun car! I was even considering it 6 years ago before I got my first LEAF. I just checked at fueleconomy.gov and was so surprised that this tiny tiny car is less efficient than the 2016 Nissan LEAF! 30kWh.
I live 60 miles from my job and in DC traffic everyone wrecks so lots of idle time as well. My 2017 Camry Xie 4 cyl has 104k miles on it trouble free still drives and sounds new surprisingly. For my life and commute electric has 0 interest at this time, but interesting to see if average person who doesn't drive zillion miles a year deals with ownership
If it had fast charging capability it would be so much less anxiety producing! But overall not a bad test!
I'm confused, so the car was NOT fully charged when you began?
The crash standard for this car is pinball.
Proceed to Prius Prime if you value your life if/when someone depreciates a vehicle.
You guys used a Land Rover as the rescue vehicle? I'm surprised the Smart didn't have to rescue it. I'm curious of the thought process behind that... "We need a potential rescue vehicle for our Electric Smart Car segment. What's the best choice for a rescue vechicle? I know, we'll take the world recognized least reliable vehicle to date, the Land Rover. Yup." Also, wouldn't it make more sense if the rescue vehicle with the trailer be in front of the Smart car in that situation? This way if the Smart needed to be towed back you're already in position to do so without having to fight through traffic and construction to get the trailer in front of the Smart. You're communicating via radio anyway so it's not like the rescue vehicle will drive away from a stranded Smart.
They should try the Chevy Spark with DC fast charging and see how they do..??
Great job!
I suppose next will be driving a combine around NY City and saying you could drive this around the city, this is a commuter inter city car, use it, that way
I thought you were going to regen down hill? Did I miss something?
"How much do you have left?"
" It says 16 miles ,but it said that a some time ago, I don't think this computer is very good"
Says he as he runs a long downhill...
I like how respectful and polite you guys are to each other and other drivers. Thank you for that! Thanks for not cussing, either. It makes me want to keep watching!!
