I've had a similar situation fighting against black arks where the black ark map wouldn't load properly, but I have no idea what was causing that. It was hilarious to see both armies completely submerged in water with not even that sliver of land.
I didnt know it had to do with walls till now. I tried 3 times from the autosave. I had a 60min timer so I just waited out the clock for a technical win (killed as many as I could with archers)
I had a water map once where the armies deployed in the normal zones (in the water) and none of the land-based units could move. The flying units could move and attack, but they would get stuck as soon as they landed, and wouldn't make any attack animations. The field trebuchets could fire at the enemy though.
I've actually had this happen with neither of those conditions kicking in, not involving bretonnia or norsca. I had this map occur during an ocean battle that took place right next to arnheim or however you spell alith anars capital on ME. It was occupied by morathi, I attacked as eltharion in the water outside the settlement at a smaller army about to dock and head ashore to the settlement. It dragged morathis army and garrison out to the ocean map with one tiny patch of dirt, and I got nuked by pit of shades and pendellums before their army showed up I got army losses. Funny stuff though lol this and the damn gate bug and hidden Los tower bug.
I've had this map before too with Oxyotl. It's a known bug with Fortress of the Damned specifically. You can see the world map is bugged there too as the treasures spawn in the boundary between water and land, but they have quite a large area so you can just barely interact with them. Same goes for the south east most settlement in Ulthuan where treasure spawns on land.
I love it! As soon as he pressed the start button, it was pure Chaos! Everyone immediately started bashing each other, spells being cast in the fray. The Sword of Khaine traveling along. And the flying knights jumping in, screamin "Hell yeah! This is the shit!"
I encountered this with oxyotl as well. I attacked an army belonging to some minor dark elf just outside of my settlement. Except ther was no strip of land at all in my case. The battle literally lost me the campaign because auto resolve decided a basic dread spear spam could kill my chameleon skink doomstack. This was actually not the only time it happened to me. Another time, as a tik tak toe one bird doomstack I attempted to attack a tier V Naggaroth by sea that was also being directly reinforced by an adjacent black arc. Despite being able to move I could not attack him by any means because all his troops were underwater. This forced me to resign and lose the battle. Thankfully losing tik tac toe had little to no impact on my campaign that time because it was fairly late game.
I guarantee it’s a test map, not intentional. It’s like how there’s placeholder ship units left in the game files: they leave them there because it’s problematic to delete it, and they’re not likely to show up at all.
I have about 1500 hours and I encountered a similar map twice - once as dark elves in Norsca and the second time I can't remember exactly - I didn't fight the battle after I saw the map.
I got this map once in my latest Wood elf campaign. It might have been the same settlement, don't remember. I was defender against Dark elves, so I could deploy were Hellebron was in this video. Half the enemy army attacked me, and the rest were in t-pose underwater. I couldn't hit all of them with my waywatchers, but I could hit enough of them to cause army losses.
legend your content gives me so much happiness, even if its the smallest most mundane thing i love it, you make lockdown so much easier, may the great horned rat watch over you
I've run into this playing I think as Dark elves. One time it only popped up once in the battle, and restarting picked a normal water map. The second time, I was exiting march stance along the lustrian coast and always was on a map that had NO LAND at all. Was able to reliably do it, so I just avoided embarking off that coast. With no land, the troops were just deployed under the water and couldn't do anything.
This is probably a leftover map they used to test out ship combat, before deciding that ship combat would take months of designing and balancing before just cutting sea battles out altogether. Also i did not know Brettonia could build walls in Norsca, no wonder Louen is doing Northern Crusades every game i play. (Edit) Brettonia can't build walls in Norsca, but the main settlement building provides Walls to settlement which is a bug. But it makes sense, since Brettonia was last updated like 2 years ago.
@@MrThefoxyone Not only that, but imagine being an office bee spending hours rendering a Vampire Coast flagship only for the community to bleat about how ship combat is unbalanced and unfun. I thought Empire: Total War's naval combat was OK.

It’s probably a leftover from naval combat testing during Warhammer 1 development and the maps weren’t deleted. The game can’t find an appropriate map for the battle, and it grabs the first map on a list somewhere which I guess are the old naval maps.
During my gameplay's i have encountered some completely broken maps too, where I had to fight a battle with my armies spread around in the air. and once I had a siege battle that was completely flooded where only the wall was out of the water for some reason.
I totally agree about the 1 fix = 2 bugs theory. It's unfortunate that all games will have frustrating bugs that are somehow tied to other bugs, or are unknown to the devs until it pops up. It's because 70 years of coding is still relatively new and we're always having to improve on old/outdated code techniques.
I realy liked, that you gave advises how to adress it properly. You realy have grown in the past couple of years as a person. I like that. Keep up the good manner and entertaining work :)
That opening use of the sword of khaine or whatever the hell that vortex was killed so many units in an instant. I can’t stop laughing from how instant it was though
There's also a bug where you can get a complete water map but that's when fighting in the sea, last time i saw it was near Ulthuan's eastern border i believe.
I had a worst map, twice. There was only water and NO LAND. Was playing High elves, had an army inside Elisia (chrace minor settlement, walled) and Malekith was approaching to land there. If you attack the army on the water that is close to the settlement and the coast, you get a 100% water map.
I suppose when they designed this map, it was initially for naval battle. But since they didn't put naval battle this map was forgotten in the database until it appear out of nowhere
Oh I have seen a part of this map in one of my HE campaigns. It was when I was caught out by Morathi by the Shrine of Khaine’s waters. But in that battle I managed to have more of the island in comparison.
I once got a water map that had such a small landmass there wasn't even enough space for me or the AI to deploy our units. Primarily because there was no landmass. It was all water. But I was attacked over the end turn in the middle of the ocean, so at least it kind of made sense.
The quickest of fixes could be to make it if no map is found then default to some random flat map. The map might be wrong for the environment but at least it's playable
I wonder if they intended this to be a naval battle map during early testing but scrapped it along with naval units but left in what there was in the game because they probably didn't think players would encounter it.
I...never realised why you can’t build tier 3 garrison buildings in norsca, always found it weird. Then I realised that those buildings make walls and now I see this. This explains a lot
I once got this map as vampire coast on ulthuan, I was fighting beastmen on an smaller sliver of land with my enemy stuck in the water. The water was too deep and most of my units weren't spawning so I had to use magic and 2 ranged units who couldn't get an angle to save their lives. Still won somehow
had a similar thing happen at Shrine of Loec on Ulthuan while playing as Wood Elves. Ambushed N'kari at the coast, map was completely fucked and the enemy army was UNDER the terrain, couldnt target them or see them.
Just two days ago in my first high elf campaign i was able to replicate the "no land just water" map reliably by attacking a DE settlement that had a reinforcing black ark. Tried to lift the siege and attack from a different angle, even with another reinforcing army, it would reliably do it. I was sieging hag graef.
Stupid bug happens quite often when I'm being reinforced by black ark stationed in city. Also reinforce range from black ark is absolutely ridiculous, like 2-3 times normal range, game doesn't show it, they will just suddenly appear in army tab
It's clearly a sea battle map for ships. I remember that when Bretonia was introduced in WH1 they datamined ships for them, but as we all know they decided against sea battles.
Weirdly enough I had an very similar thing happened to me where I was playing Itza and I had to fight lokhir outside of alter of the horned rat on the vortex map and he had it under his control then when I attacked him the map looked like an extremely flat desert with absolutely no Terran
I had a high elf Norsca battle similar to this. I got the whole map and all the troops besides my dragons were underwater. I couldn’t see any of the troops and just had to fight blind.
Finally, we find the map that the auto-resolve AI fights all their battles on.
So that's why my archers take so many casualties in autoresolve when they usually take 0 casualties in manual. XD

I suppose when they designed this map, it was initially for naval battle. But since they didn't put naval battle this map was forgotten in the database until it appear out of nowhere
Oh my god! You get so crazy disasters lately!
Theres a similar map near the star tower in lustria. If you get it you just can't deploy units, you have to wait out the timer
I encountered this map as a highelf at the chrace settlement, clicked start battle and everyone ground unit is underwater
That SoK cast in the beginning of the battle xD
Oh I have seen a part of this map in one of my HE campaigns. It was when I was caught out by Morathi by the Shrine of Khaine’s waters. But in that battle I managed to have more of the island in comparison.
I didn't think much of this initially but was a funny battle to see and good video
Honestly, this is a kinda funny scenario. Knigjts fighting in the ocean. The crusade knows no bounds
This map is actually in the game. I have to try and replicate this!
Is it wrong that i saw that massive cluster of units and thought how much fun a Doomrocket would be?
5:00 oh my God that sword of khaine
I once got this map as vampire coast on ulthuan, I was fighting beastmen on an smaller sliver of land with my enemy stuck in the water. The water was too deep and most of my units weren't spawning so I had to use magic and 2 ranged units who couldn't get an angle to save their lives. Still won somehow
had a similar thing happen at Shrine of Loec on Ulthuan while playing as Wood Elves. Ambushed N'kari at the coast, map was completely fucked and the enemy army was UNDER the terrain, couldnt target them or see them.
I once had this map as the High Elves, except the battle map encompassed that whole island rather than just its corner.
I’d like to imagine it’s a party and someone stepped on someone else’s shoes
Stupid bug happens quite often when I'm being reinforced by black ark stationed in city. Also reinforce range from black ark is absolutely ridiculous, like 2-3 times normal range, game doesn't show it, they will just suddenly appear in army tab
It's clearly a sea battle map for ships. I remember that when Bretonia was introduced in WH1 they datamined ships for them, but as we all know they decided against sea battles.
Looks like the Chaos Wastes moved south for a beach vacation.
this battle would be so GREAT for screenshots if you zoomed in. Wished I had this save.
I had that kind of map twice playing high elves and fighting dark elfes in the north coast of Ulthuan. There was not a single bit of dry land.
