The thing I love about Ripper is he seemed fully aware of the position he was in and was as stoked as anyone in the arena. He was like “oh my god, I’m in Judas Priest”
Ripper is a great singer in his own right. Love his stuff. Powerful for sure. But, Rob will always be the metal god for a reason. His vocal is 100% killer.
Tim Owens… thank you so much for being one of only a few singers to hold up to the original… and in doing so, you are also an original, and awesome!!! Much praise to your gifted voice!!!! 🙏
Unlike Maiden when they lost Bruce, I truly believe Priest was exceptionally lucky to find Tim and because of that I think it was unfortunate/unfair that Tim never received the praise he deserved. Loving the series Ken. Hope you get around to doing bands like Deep Purple/Rainbow, great stuff!
Yet Owens can't seem to stick with a band for more than a few albums. I've often wondered if he's difficult to work with or just prefers to explore his options. I can't say I know much about him as a person.
Halford invented Halford, and will always be an original. Owens stands on his shoulders, along with other metal influences that might make him a more versatile singer. I hear a little James Hetfield in his lower register, as well as others who have been mentioned, some who arrived after Halford's formative years. I feel like I might run into Tim, a hardworking journeyman, in a bar somewhere, whether he's gigging or just watching football, whereas part of Rob's charisma is that he seems to have stepped off of a spaceship.
Tim Owens is a wasted talent. I mean he should have had a band that would have sent him into the stratosphere. Like so many other talented guys he deserves more than what he 's had.
@@ivsiguitarist Total beast, RIP. There's not a lot of Sanctuary stuff with Joseph Michael, but I wouldn't mind a Sanctuary video from Ken about the two. Joseph's main band Witherfall is pretty good.
Rob Halford is the best rock singer ever, the only and unique. Tim Owens is the only one who could replace Rob Halford in Judas Priest - the greatest heavy metal band of all time.
@@wesbates1143 No, Rob Halford is the greatest singer in Rock history, much greater than Paul Rodgers. Your choice wouldn't be in the top ten. Elvis is greater than Paul Rodgers.
@@barrysmith839 He has a point Barry. Halford is my favorite vocalist for many reasons. He writes amazing lyrics, he has a huge presence, his unique phrasing is something only he does. He doesn`t scream all over the place, only where the song recorded one. His softer tones in early days are a thing of beauty. I have a few guys that I really like as singers, and some are just great performers and make up for their limited range with charisma. David Lee Roth is a great frontman( was) with swagger. I don`t know why so many people revere Paul Rogers. He is a good singer, but he doesn`t really do anything special. He is a typical 70`s rock singer and a good one, but that is all, no superman. The guy saying Roger is a rock singer and Halford is a metal one is true, but why did he even say that?? That remark came out of left field. Now... Owens has more power in his chest than Rob. But Rob is THE man. He is called the Metal God for a good reason. He has the whole package. You cannot replace him. You can get a great vocalist like Owens to sing and be technically stronger, but Halford can not be replaced by anyone, ever.
Halford is unreachable! Most of all i love his natural voice like in songs like Before the Dawn, Prisoner in your eyes, Nostradamus, Epitaph, … I don’t like if people just see his unique screams
Tim spent several years fronting a Priest tribute band called *British Steel* He started them around Akron, Ohio and built out from there. He idolizes Rob Halford.
Agree Judas are 90% Rob Halford or more in my opinion. A even greater singer dosen’t matter. It is like Motörhead was Lemmy, and he was not even famous fore his crazy good voice 😂 Some singers can not be replaced. Like Udo in Accept🤷🏼♂️not the best singer, but perfect for ”Balls to wall”👍😊
I was so loyal to Rob Halford that I have never heard Tim Ripper Owens sing. I heard it here and I am very inspired by vocal talent. Both are amazing!!
Gotta give it to Halford, especially for those 70s Priest albums. Those earlier album had some of the best singing I've ever heard. And classic Priest(1974-1990) has always been my fave band
Here is the thing about both singers. Rob Halford went through several different vocal periods. From the beginning up until say 1980, his voice was exceptional. But from 1980 - 1985 he was drinking a lot and his voice was very inconsistent. His pitch would jump all over the place and many times they would add delay on his screams to lengthen them live. But in 1986 he got sober and up until the Painkiller tour his voice was off the charts. He had unlimited range and control. Some of the most impressive singing I have ever heard. When he left Priest and formed "Halford" he was in spectacular form, and I content that everything he has done (albums and live) since returning to Priest pales in comparison to what he did with "Halford". Tim was amazing. Simply amazing. His power, control, and epic upper range was stunning. Wickedly underappreciated! I happen to love the two albums Tim recorded with Priest. Take "Victim of Changes". Perhaps THE classic Priest song of all-time and compare what Rob did on "Unleashed in the East" and the full version of what Tim did on the "Live in London" video that Ken used for portions of his comparison in this video. That is prime vs. prime and while I never suggest one is "better" than the other, there are elements of Tim's performance that I prefer. His second verse is one of the greatest sustained screams I have ever heard. The "You're tryin' to find your way again" section and when he pushes the already sustained scream way up the scale is breathtaking. Also, do yourself a huge favor and listen to Tim destroy the King Diamond track "Abigail" live for the Road Runner records birthday concert. It's perhaps one of the greatest vocals covers I have ever heard. Both are magnificent singers. Rob, the original and singularly unique. Tim exceptional as well. It is just so difficult to replace an icon no matter how great you might be, and Rob's legacy proved to be too much to overcome.
I'm friends with Ripper's guitarist, Nick, from back when he fronted the Priest tribute band, British Steel. Seeing our hometown boy go on to front the actual band was surreal. Tim knew Rob would probably return at some point and was totally okay with it. That whole opportunity opened doors for Tim which otherwise would have been nonexistent for a Northeastern Ohio musician.
Tim is fantastic. The stuff he did with Iced Earth was so epic, especially Gettysburg 1863, the feel and vocal performance bring tears to my eyes. I love him! He kept Priest alive and performed some epic vocals.
I am an iced earth fan as well until around 2013 but to me like priest and maiden with Bruce and Rob. Matt Barlow is the voice of iced earth. And I say that today. Considering stu block. Where stu seemed to be more in Matt's range as a baritone but would over act compared to Tim or Matt. Personally for Tim I think at the time when the 2 Pantera guys did damage plan before dimebag Darrel was tragically killed they should of had pat Lachman on second guitar with dime and had Tim Owen's be the frontman. Instead of pat. Because at the time Tim had more of that kind of early Phil Anselmo voice before Phil went extreme. Nowadays I think Tim is a much better singer especially with kks version of judas priest. Still not Halford but a much better vocalist
Owens is really good. I think he takes on the Painkiller vibe and pushes Judas Priest into heavier territories. I think he did it very well. He added something to the band by pushing them into a more 90's 00's metal sound.
Halford Is believable on any track, his whole persona is so unique that to duplicate is virtually impossible,Once he's gone its gone forever.. A singer is not just about singing its a whole vibe an aura that engulfs the whole band.
I am a huge fan of both. Demolition and Jugulator are both among my favorite albums by any band, as are Painkiller and Firepower. What an amazing body of work this band has! And deepest admiration and respect to both vocalists.
I became a Judas Priiest fan for 2 albums, Jugulator and Demolition. Those albums were just so brutally heavy and macabre and I loved them! They took the music to some dark and heavy areas they hadn't been before. And the songs were so unstructured and free form which I loved whereas before they were becoming a bit predictable. It's almost as if they were a new band with newly tapped unrelenting energy. That said Rob Halford is one of the nicest classiest human beings you could ever hope to meet. Interestingly Rob recently said he listens to Dio before he performs live as a way to get psyched for the show. Pure class!
Cathedral Spires by Priest with Ripper really shows what he is capable of. I don't know if they ever did it live, but it's one of judas priest's best songs.
Ripper is incredible. Always been a fan. He was a fantastic lead vocalist for Priest. I respected him because he had the skills to sing all of the material without being a clone of Halford. Owens did not create the sound nor did he write the famous Priest tracks; instead, he took what already existed, cranked it up with his thicker (younger?) voice, and drilled it home until Rob decided to return. A hell of a ride, an incredible but ultimately sad story for Tim "Ripper" Owens.
@@rickyesch1586 Wow are you ever right on that! KK's Priest is phenomenal in all respects. Musicianship is amazing, and Tim's vocals are off the charts!!!! Glad he is fronting that band!
I grew up with Tim, It's nice to hear an honest opinion, everyone else has stayed loyal to Rob which is understandable but Tim Ripper Owens is a force to be reckoned with!!!!
I think Ripper did an excellent job stepping in, what a feat to take on. Ripper has also become a much better singer since his days with Priest. His current work with KK's Priest is just sensational. With all that said, Rob Halford is a force to reckon with, especially during the 80s, just so commanding and nobody could touch him, he is a legend. They are both great singers, and although similar they are different. Great video, loved the analysis.
The danger for you, Ken, when you are judging great singers, is that, because you are such a great singing teacher and know so much about technique and even the anatomy of the voice, that you may miss seeing that magical element that escapes critical judgement. Maria Callas, definitely the greatest soprano of the 20th Century, if not all time, had both a beautiful voice and an ugly voice. She had faults, sometimes technical faults, but somehow she turned even those into unique virtues which made her stand out from more conventionally perfect singers. Rob Halford is the same. His voice is both beautiful and ugly, dark and light, good and evil, in such a way, that it becomes compelling to listen to. Tim "Ripper" Owens is a more conventionally perfect singer than Rob Halford but does not possess that unpredictable magic that only a genius possesses. The same holds true for your video on AC/DC. Brian Johnson may be the conventionally more perfect, even better, singer than Bon Scott but Bon Scott is a one-off, iconic, magical personality, beloved and adored in Australia, because he reflects the Australian larrikin character so completely.
Johnson sang good for one album Scott had a voice he didn't have to fake. While I love the Johnson era music I can o ly take so much I can listen to bon all freaking day.
The ACDC conversation is one that is almost unfair to have too, in my opinion. You get to hear Brian Johnson's decline across over 40 years worth of harsh singing... but Bon Scott up and died so quickly that everyone remembers him when his voice was at its strongest.
I seen Priest at the State Theatre in Battle Creek Michigan back in around 95 to 97. I forget the year. I remember wondering how they would sound with a new singer. Tim killed the show. I mean i was totally satisfied with what i saw. Stood up by the speakers on stage and my ears rang for hours after. Lol
Four words: Ian Gillan, Deep Purple. High falsetto, long held notes, powerful belting mid chest voice (listen to Rob from 1990 to 2000 to 2010 to 2020, as he has learned to take care of his health, and his voice, the progression is striking).
Criminally underrated album for me. One of the most solid Priest albums and I just think it's amazing that a band that started in the 70s was able to get this kind of sound.
I’ve been a Halford fan since I first heard him in the mid-80’s and I styled my own singing style on his. Having said this, I feel that Rippers slower live version of Diamonds and Rust is one of the best live performances I have ever heard. Both vocalists are of the highest level but Halford just had the pedigree and stage presence which made him the legend he rightly is.
It was nice seeing you give props to local vocalist Tim Ripper Owens. He actually grew up about 20 minutes from where I did. He was in a Priest tribute band in the Akron, Ohio area, opening the shows with his other band. While I'm not a huge Priest fan, I do like Iced Earth a lot, another band Tim was in, and in my opinion, their best vocalist. Tim is also amazing in A New Revenge. You mentioned the movie Rockstar, while it was loosely based on Tim, he did not authorize it, and was not completely true to life. I watched the Motley Crüe episode you did as well, and oddly enough, John Corabi did a show at Tim Owens Rock House (restaurant and bar) in 2014 I believe. It was a phenomenal show, as John performed the entire 1994 Mötley album in order as it is on the album. His son Ian was on drums. There was a meet and greet after the show, the whole band was very nice and took time to talk with the fans. I saw Mötley in 1994 with Corabi, both shows were amazing to say the least. Keep doing what you do sir, we enjoy it.
Halford's just an absolute monster in so many respects. Especially towards the late 80s-90s where he reached his peak. He's still fantastic now, I've seen the band a couple of times and the second during the Epitaph tour he was on absolute fire. He's certainly had to do a lot of self searching and reinventing of his voice since the reunion though, I really enjoy that gruff, gritty, bellowing voice he uses these days in a lot of Priest stuff! It's a huge influence on my own singing in a lot of ways. Ripper deserves credit where its due for doing what he did too though. My favourite of his material was during his stint in Iced Earth rather than Priest. I understand too, that it was almost Ralf Scheepers to have gotten the job to replace Rob who would have certainly done just as well as Tim did in whatever alternative timeline that may have happened :D Brilliant video again, Ken. I enjoy watching these whenever I see them in my recommended videos feed!
It's a really great video! Sometimes you just expressed my own feelings ;). Anyway, I was a teenager in the 90s and I supposed I would never see Priest live. And then suddenly the Ripper line up came about and I was just blown away by his and the band's performance. It's something I'll hold forever in my heart. I also add that my favourite singer ever is Rob. But Tim did a more than worthy job when Rob went to walk on his own bizarre ways. :)
We seem to make subjective judgements based on our love for a particular singer. But as Ken said, if we were to objectively break down Tim's voice and live performances, he slaughters Halford with his variety and vocal control. Tim is by far the most underrated singer in Metal
He might be technically stronger with a better chest, shows he was obviously trained. But "slaughter" is just not right. What about his songwriting? W@hat about his melodies. What about his charisma? A very strong voice, no doubt. Younger and never went thru coke and drinking and taking a band from a local act to the most Revered and respected bands in the world because of his vocals, lyrics and command. He stepped into a proven , veteran well oiled Maserati. Good for him!! He fulfilled his dream. Super set of pipes. Powerful. Halford is much more than a voice.
Exactly! Charisma and personality is what matters more than any technique. Even when Halford sang technically bad on some shows, he still had all the spirit that moves you. Nothing Tim does moves me. He actually sings like a karaoke singer; that's the problem. Spirit is EVERYTHING! Personality always wins artistically over training or technique. If this isn't true, a vocal-computer would be the best singer in the world. Music is not about who sings louder or holds a note longer.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Rob and he is one of the humblest guys you could ever meet.Never forgot where he came from, just a real genuine, decent human being and a real Metal God.
I think it’s awesome how much you cover on your channel. From instruction, to demonstration, to analysis, to comparison. It’s neat to see how you not only teach and demonstrate what you teach, but I love how creative you are with these series and the entertainment value they bring. The coolest thing though is definitely your shirt collection being on display. Keep on rocking!
Tim made me a Judas Priest fan. Period. Rob is the metal god, but Tim was the best replacement JP could picked it up, no doubt at all. All my respect and love for both amazing singers.
Really great video, Ken! I've been a huge Priest fans since ages and I do love the Rob 'Metal God' Halford. HOWEVER, if there ever was any signer, who could step into the footsteps of Halford, it could only be HIM, TIM RIPPER OWENS!! In my humble opinion Tim is hell of a metal singer!! Maybe one of the most underrated and underappreciated vocalists! I love all that Ripper recorded with Judas Priest (especially the "Live In London" album!!), with Iced Earth, as well as with Yngwie Malmsteen and now with KK's Priest. He's simply phenomenal, incredible, ass-kicking metal vocalist!! I do respect him and what he did with Priest, because of his skills to sing all of the Priest songs! And in my humble opinion, many songs he was and is able to sing better than Halford did (just take a listen to live versions of "Heading Out To The Highway", "Dessert Plains" or "Turbo Lover" on the a/m "Live In London" CD)!! LONG LIVE THE RIPPER!!
Halford is the king. No one comes close, EXCEPT Tim! Tim had the ability to replace Rob with out even thinking about it. No one is better for JP than Rob. It’s the look, presence, EVERYTHING.
Tim is such a beast. Loved his work with Iced Earth! Thanks Ken for another great video. Maybe you can do a video analysis about the different vocalists that Yngwie Malmsteen had over the years. 💯
Great series bro and this one is amazing. anyone who could step into Robs shoes and be accepted is in itself mind boggling. Ripper is an amazing singer Rob is an Original and I am gonna leave it at that. both guys can wail there asses off. Ripper reminds me of a singer I know Ken Tamplin who got that bigger bottom but can still hit those high notes like they are second nature. You should check out his stuff also. very impressive. curious now that KK downing has his own band KK's Priest how that's going to add to this little story with Ripper on Vocals. Oh what a tangled web we weave.
Love them both. Tim is a beast! The most wanted vocalist in the metal world! Great series. You should do Queensryche, Helloween, Nightwish and Crimson Glory (Astronomica) with Wade Black, Tim Owens' twin scream brother!
Tim in helloween no but that's another conversation. But there's a connection there considering when kai hansen left helloween of which he was the original vocalist not micheal kiske he formed gamma ray with Ralph sheepers. Who was the other vocalist in contention to replace Rob Halford in priest at the time. And would have been the better choice to me to replace the great Rob Halford. But then again if Ralph had been chosen fans would not have missed Rob Halford so much. Don't Believe me do a you tube search and type in tyran pace and listen to their first album and a song called eye to eye from 1984 which sounds very similar to the priest song you've got another thing coming. As tyran pace was Ralph's bans before he joined gamma ray. Which did 3 albums before breaking up. In 1988
Sounds like you guys prefer the replacements with the exception of helloween me with queensryche and crimson glory I prefer the original guys Midnight and goeff tate. Regardless of the circumstances. Wade black vs midnight is like apples and oranges. With wade black sounding like a hairband singer. If you want to do a comparison where both the original and replacement were on equal footing metal church was a good example with David Wayne vs Mike Howe. Sadly both are dead now And Ronnie munroe could not match either of them live.
@@sascha294 yep at the time he would have been the better choice. As part of the reason he left gamma ray in late 1994 was due to his bieng a top contender to replace Rob Halford in judas priest and this was before Ralph started balding and going with a shaved head. Just like Halford. The proof is also in the 2 covers gamma ray did of priest songs one with kais vocals and one with Ralph's vocals. Primal also did a killer cover of metal gods. But even more proof has to do with the first gamma ray video heading for the east from 1990 ralph was on fire and even sang helloween songs and I hate to say it but sang them better than micheal kiske. Did. Kai also would have at the time sounded better than Tim. But he is a guitar player also so that's why I did not mention him.
I grew up in the 80's and of course with Judas Priest.. I love Tim the ripper, but I have to go with Rob and his impressive catalog of fantastic metal! Thanks a lot Ken!
I saw Tim sing on Judas Priest's Jugulator tour in a small venue. My jaw hit the floor. It was so good, I saw Halford as a solo artist a year later performing some Priest songs during the show and it was awesome. So I like both, but Halford for the win.
Ripper is and always will be a phenomenal vocalist. The reality at least for me is that the 2 Priest albums with Ripper just didn't have the quality of song writing that exist with Halford. Yes, Halford did it better 😁
Tim Owens is a fantastic singer who did the best anyone could have done with what had to be the most thankless assignment in the history of the universe. I know I had a hard time accepting him, for no fault of his own but simply because the idea of anyone replacing Rob Halford seemed like the epitome of heresy. I remember actually tearing up when I learned that Judas Priest were reuniting. In hindsight, younger me was such a fool in so many ways... I am truly happy to learn that Tim got the recognition he so amply deserves.
I agree Josh. Ken you should check out the Glorious Burden from Iced Earth. Tim replaced Matt Barlow, who has one of the most unique voices of all time. Tim killed it. Check out that album and also, please do a review on Matt Barlow form Iced Earth (particularly Travel in Stygian off the Alive in Athens video. It’s on UA-cam you can find it right away). Thanks and great video! I love Ripper and glad to see him get the credit he deserves. He’s also a great guy as well.
@@kevincust1329 A comparison of Matt Barlow v. Tim Owens v. Stu Block would be awesome, as all three are distinctive singers, and yet they each put their stamp on Iced Earth.

@@kentamplin definitely, seemed the most rational way of going about it to me. I look at things like a house, can’t do the falsetto screams if you don’t even have the foundation’s of falsetto
Just saw KKs Priest last night in Riverside,CA and OMG. What a voice!! I knew Tim is an amazing singer but watching him from the second row blew my mind!!! Love Rob Halford but Tim Owen is an amazing singer as well!! Amazing!!! 🎉
I have always been a huge fan of Judas Priest. Rob is incredible! This being said, the fact that Tim can fill his shoes, says a lot about his outstanding vocals. I met Tim when he was singing for Yngwie, he is an all around amazing vocalist and a super nice guy.
Halford in his prime was simply one of the best vocalists of all time. Tim Owens time with Priest though was very interesting. I love Juggulator, I think its probably the heaviest studio album Priest has ever done and Tim gave the band a really cool "shot in the arm" at a time they needed it. Me personally, I dig them both and enjoy "All" of Priests music forever.
The thing is that you showed Rob in his prime. When he was in his prime he was untouchable. Now he gets to where he speaks the lyrics instead of singing. I think Ripper did a fine job of taking over for him. He was able to do the live stuff that Rob couldn't anymore.
Ken, you do an amazing job of critiquing singers, educating the public, and teaching me to listen intelligently to the voices we hear. I appreciate music so much more for your contributions. Very very grateful!
Tim is the Ripper and Rob is the Legend. Ripper killed it (live) in the 90s when Rob was on the page Metal is dead. I saw them live in 1997 with the ripper (was in my early 20s back then 😱) and man, I didn’t miss Rob at all. Love both though ♥️. Great series by the way Ken! Thanks.
For me I always liked the older Rod Halford from the seventies and early eighties. I think Tim Owen's did a fantastic job singing the original Priest songs. I could never get into the original songs he did for priest. I'm not saying he did them bad. Just couldn't get into them. Great job you are doing here with this series. Thank you and Gob bless. Would love to see you do one on Petra. Two totally different singers in John Schlitt and Greg X Volz
Loving this new series! I love rippers voice,I think he did great and I enjoy the records he did with Priest, but NOONE compares to the metal good himself.
I have always loved hard rock and metal. What I especially love are the different unique voices that all the bands have. I thought Tim Owen did a tremendous job to fill Rob Halford’s mic, but I would still have to give it to Rob. He’s just so different than anyone else. AC⚡️DC is probably my all time favorite band. Comparing Bon Scott and Brian Johnson is difficult I believe because they are very different but both are great. Bon apparently got a gift to his voice after a motorcycle accident. What I love way more about AC⚡️DC with Bon on the vocals is the whole bluesy dirty rock. It’s just so dirty and sweet. I don’t believe anyone in the world though could replace Brian on the Back in Black album. After Bon’s early demise, I would never have imagined AC⚡️DC would come out with an album so incredibly brilliant as Back in Black where every single song is just absolutely supreme. Another bluesy dirty rock vocalist whom I love is Ronnie Van Zant. He was just a very unique talent. I just recently saw their documentary which was really nice to see and really learn way more about the band of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Ok, I’ll stop writing now 😁
I've this is the live performance,- then Tim has more live "power". Never hear Rob Halford on this hight pitches on stage. Yes, Rob Halford is the heart of Judes priest in my opinion and got always a sing teacher by his side over twenty years.
What do you mean that Rob never have those high pitches on stage?. Rob have a wider range that tim on studio and live, actually tim sings in a lower key than halford, anyway both are amazing singer and i like both
Great Versus! People are always so nostalgic and they do not think logically about this type of comparisons. I would also add to the Equation: Time Period, Tim arrived in the mids 90s when nobody gives nothing to 80s metal and he pull the band off through that decade. Rob re-entered the band in the mid 2000s when Metal was actually returning to its prime. So, that generational change also matters.
I've seen Priest live with both and Halford solo band. I'm giving Halford the thumbs up here. His band Halford was unbelievable live and he crushed it. Dino J is my favorite singer nowadays
I have loved Judas Priest since I was a kid, however when Ripper sings it I get goose bumps and there is this feeling deep in my soul ... I just can't get enough of that scream! Tim "Ripper" Owens is my favorite singer ever... ijs
This was more helpful than expected as usual. Just recently with a new bunch of musicians im working with, they are writing with a sound where my upper chest voice sounds "Right" but Holy Mackerel...It was a mountain i had ti climb. That higher king diamond/ priest stuff did make me ignore my chest voice. Doing my Lower notes...They are like why have you ignored doing THAT or so long...ugg...I gotta build up my structure again
The thing I love about Ripper is he seemed fully aware of the position he was in and was as stoked as anyone in the arena. He was like “oh my god, I’m in Judas Priest”
He also got a little too big for his britches in an interview once that I read where he said he had a naturally higher voice than Rob Halford.

I love rob too bro
I love Rob too, but he doesn’t have the aggression or the range that Tim brings to the table!
@@siegmundfuchsbrugger1365 and don't forget beyond the Realms of death
Tim spent several years fronting a Priest tribute band called *British Steel* He started them around Akron, Ohio and built out from there. He idolizes Rob Halford.
I met Tim after a show in San Diego and he’s a normal, humble, working-class guy. The fame hasn’t gone to his head at all.
Tim did a great job and is a very gifted singer. But I don't think anyone can come close to Rob's charisma and stage authority.
stage or studio Halford is the voice of jp
King Diamond is leagues beyond Halford
@@chiphargis2419 looool
Or you mean ultra gayness
Agree Judas are 90% Rob Halford or more in my opinion.
A even greater singer dosen’t matter.
It is like Motörhead was Lemmy, and he was not even famous fore his crazy good voice 😂
Some singers can not be replaced.
Like Udo in Accept🤷🏼♂️not the best singer, but perfect for ”Balls to wall”👍😊
Two words. Holy Crap. Man both of those guys are absolute beasts. Great video again.
Glad you liked it!
Sad Wings of Destiny has amazing tracks on it. I think it is my favorite Priest album. Screaming and Defenders are the other two of their best stuff.
Tim Owens is a great singer, but Rob's charisma is iconic and basically untouchable.
I watched Ripper Owens singing in Western Australia last night and he had the crowd screaming for more ! An electric performance ⚡️⭐️🔥🇦🇺
Cathedral Spires, man. What a jam
@@blackout.X . Also death row sounds badass.
Damn, your avatar is great, haha =D
I bet that show really rocked the Crossroads. Miss the hell out of that place.
I’m a Akron guy also, Tim has always kicked ass
Tim is fantastic. The stuff he did with Iced Earth was so epic, especially Gettysburg 1863, the feel and vocal performance bring tears to my eyes. I love him! He kept Priest alive and performed some epic vocals.
I totally agree! I wish he could've stayed in Iced Earth. One of my favorite bands ever.
@@gabrielstern4992 Stu Block is amazing! Incorruptible is a kick-ass album with amazing vocals.
Whos Iced Earths drummer
And now we have KKs Priest
Owens is really good. I think he takes on the Painkiller vibe and pushes Judas Priest into heavier territories. I think he did it very well. He added something to the band by pushing them into a more 90's 00's metal sound.
Halford Is believable on any track, his whole persona is so unique that to duplicate is virtually impossible,Once he's gone its gone forever.. A singer is not just about singing its a whole vibe an aura that engulfs the whole band.
Halford like from a different planet, you just don't forget vocalist like that,
No question about it. Ripper Owens!!!
Rob Halford had a great deeper voice also..I love it.
Tim did an awesome job in both JP and Iced Earth. Phenomenal singer and performer!
Pure class!
Halford, legendary. Priest was my first show
Cathedral Spires by Priest with Ripper really shows what he is capable of. I don't know if they ever did it live, but it's one of judas priest's best songs.
Also tim owns diamonds and rust in my opinion ❤
Very nice video. Thank you!
100
Not so sad as we now have KK'S Priest!
Johnson sang good for one album
Scott had a voice he didn't have to fake.
While I love the Johnson era music I can o ly take so much
I can listen to bon all freaking day.
The ACDC conversation is one that is almost unfair to have too, in my opinion. You get to hear Brian Johnson's decline across over 40 years worth of harsh singing... but Bon Scott up and died so quickly that everyone remembers him when his voice was at its strongest.
It is hard to compare. Halford is THE voice of Judas Priest, but Ripper did an excellent job and helped the band to exist during the 90s \m/
My favorite album with Ian is actually the Born Again album from Black Sabbath. His voice and Iommi's guitar just blend so well together
Rob's a legend but Tim is a whole other beast entirely. Jugulator is one of Priests best albums, in my opinion.
I think so too. Purists don't like it, but it was an amazing album, and Tim did a great job live
Criminally underrated album for me. One of the most solid Priest albums and I just think it's amazing that a band that started in the 70s was able to get this kind of sound.
While I have never seen Priest live, I have seen both of these guys on stage. Both are amazing. Just mind blowing!
Rob.... he is legend in his style, just like he DIO, thanks ken great video as always
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am honored to have Ripper Owens featured on my upcoming album, Hyena
Excellent as always Ken. I love Halford but so appreciate the ripper as well. Nice job on even the fair coverage and opinion.
Much appreciated!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Tim is one of my favorite singers. I think he did a great job carrying JP to the next chapter. I love Rob as a singer, too.
I’ve always found Ripper’s voice to be “ugly”. Just not a good fit for Priest.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Rob and he is one of the humblest guys you could ever meet.Never forgot where he came from, just a real genuine, decent human being and a real Metal God.
I've enjoyed both singers equally, but I feel that Halford created a more interesting lineage lyrically, for judas preist
Thanks for sharing!

It’s neat to see how you not only teach and demonstrate what you teach, but I love how creative you are with these series and the entertainment value they bring. The coolest thing though is definitely your shirt collection being on display. Keep on rocking!
I really appreciate that Evan!
Tim made me a Judas Priest fan. Period.
Rob is the metal god, but Tim was the best replacement JP could picked it up, no doubt at all. All my respect and love for both amazing singers.
Since 2000 Rob Halford is the "Teleprompter God"
I've seen Priest in all its formations but with Tim it was something different. The band's sound was out of this world. Point for him.
Very interesting analysis Ken! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Halford is the king. No one comes close, EXCEPT Tim! Tim had the ability to replace Rob with out even thinking about it. No one is better for JP than Rob. It’s the look, presence, EVERYTHING.
I love how you celebrate the excellent and epic parts of the singers. That just makes it more fun to watch and learn.
Tim is such a beast. Loved his work with Iced Earth! Thanks Ken for another great video.
Maybe you can do a video analysis about the different vocalists that Yngwie Malmsteen had over the years. 💯
You bet!
Queensryche is a great idea. Todd is an underrated singer.
In 1988
Sounds like you guys prefer the replacements with the exception of helloween me with queensryche and crimson glory I prefer the original guys
Midnight and goeff tate.
Regardless of the circumstances.
Wade black vs midnight is like apples and oranges.
With wade black sounding like a hairband singer.
If you want to do a comparison where both the original and replacement were on equal footing metal church was a good example with David Wayne vs Mike Howe.
Sadly both are dead now
And Ronnie munroe could not match either of them live.
Yeah, Ralf Sheepers is the perfect replacement for Rob Halford.
They both veey good! Rob is legend and Tim now become legend too
Tim Rippers performance of Diamonds and Rust on the Live 98 Metal Meltdown album was by far one of the best live vocal performances of all time.
Bullet Train, Cathedral Spires and Burn in Hell are great songs, notwithstanding. Wish Rob would sing them onstage.
Rob's chest voice has become strong after the 90s tho.
The 30 years British Steel show is amazing and the stuff without priest too.
Man.. I would love to see Ralph Scheppers with Judas, just for a moment.
Tim Riper Owens was a man replacing the Metal God and became a legend in the process and he did it again with Iced Earth
👍

Tim Owens is such and amazing singer, I always remenber him singing with iced earth and was outstanding, this live show was in London I always want to see Tim with Judas, thanks for this video great as always Ken.

He’s singing amazing in Firepower
Ripper was the right guy for the job. The 98 live Priest CD with Ripper = 🔥
Great video Ken 👍
Hard to replace a legend - Rob Halford still rules - Owens had the unenviable task of trying to step into a legend’s shoes - never easy
Owens is a great singer, should be respected
Thanks for watching, Rkid!
Yes Owens is a great singer but come on man we are talking Priest. The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the band or its name is Rob
Do your stuff ripper
I admit owens is one of the few from his generation who deserve the flame
Halford in his prime was simply one of the best vocalists of all time. Tim Owens time with Priest though was very interesting. I love Juggulator, I think its probably the heaviest studio album Priest has ever done and Tim gave the band a really cool "shot in the arm" at a time they needed it. Me personally, I dig them both and enjoy "All" of Priests music forever.
Great job Ken as per usual. You can hear Halford had that Lexicon PCM92 pumping with echo and reverb!
Thanks.
Looking forward to K. K. Priest (new band by K. K. Downing) with Tim “The Ripper” on vocals.
Glad you're enjoying it!
great video man, I love both singers. I saw Tim in Paraguay many years ago.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Loving this new series! I love rippers voice,I think he did great and I enjoy the records he did with Priest, but NOONE compares to the metal good himself.
Both insanely talented
Indeed!
Totally agree with your analysis! Rob is the OG and has irreplaceable charisma, but Ripper is a monster singer who absolutely deserves his credit!
Ok, I’ll stop writing now 😁
That was excellent Ken. Time flew by. Didn't realize Ripper was that good. Love what Rob is doing now after Covid.
Great video. U are amazing and extreemy talented,, keep up the videos
Glad it was helpful!
Rob always wins.
But Tim's live preformance of Diamonds and rusts with priest brings a tear too my eyes.
