- In this video we admire side-by-side comparisons of the stunning vocals of 3 Helloween Lead Vocalists! Prepare yourself for some exciting and incredible singing!
Helloween - Replacement Singers - Who Did It Better? Michael Kiske - Kai Hansen - Andi Deris
Both Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske have claimed to have never had vocal lessons making their dominance as former Helloween frontmen even more impressive.
In addition to Kai and Michael, I’ll be comparing current lead singer Andi Deris and I want to know who you thought did it better. Let me know in the comments!
Though it’s incredibly difficult to sing and play the kind of licks Kai did, we’ll see how he was able to do so with ease creating those big, round vocals.
I’ll also examine the difference in energy between Kiske and Deris and how they were able to raise the band to another level creatively.

I love all three. Kiske is probably my favorite metal singer out there though. Just a crazy voice. I will say, I’m so happy with Deris as a replacement. Going a different way, creating a great new era. Instead of say what Journey did, in trying to find a Perry replacement. And look at where it got us. Their new liveshows are amazing. Deris and Kiske sound incredible together. What a celebrarion of the band and their music. And I love how friendly the two of them have become. They’re making the people who bickered about “deris vs kiske” for years look so foolish. Just a perfect conclusion to a legendary band.
Agreed and very well said. ❤🤘😎🎤
Completely concur! Ironically Andi Deris has always been my favorite Helloween singer but Kiske has never sounded better. Together Michael and Andi push each to sound better than they ever have in past years/decades. Also as you know since Kiske departed in 1992 he's been extremely active musically. Idk your thoughts are but Michael Kiske's 4 records with Place Verdome (the musicians of Pink Cream 69/ironically Andis Deris' former band) were some of the best vocals Kiske has ever done outisde of Helloween. One of the best Melodic Heavy Metal bands to come out this century.
Deris is like wine. That man gets better and better throughout the years.
In my opinion, that Deris from Better than Raw… damn!!! Will never come back, sorry!
so true..in the 90s sounded baaaad..and now it sounds great, so weird
Deris from Pink Cream 69... Cosmos
I dunno, I miss the old raspyness his voice used to have when he just started, like in Sole Survivor for example
team deris!
I'm an Andi Deris fan, love his varied vocal styles, songwriting and wonderful frontman skills. That being said, I have a lot of respect for Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske, all 7 make up an amazing band!
Andi is a pop singer Michael is a rock singer kai is a heavy metal singer
@@Bryan-hp9nw I would say that Michael Kiske is the pop singer - he has the most clean and light voice. But wonderfull.
Let's make something clear, Kiske is the vocalist god of Helloween, Kia Hansen is another level and Deris is only and will be the shadow of the greatest vocalist, Mr. Michael Kiske, ok
@@Bryan-hp9nw Andi is definetly not a pop singer.. I thought that way about Michael Kiske..
Im a big fan of Kiske, he's got one of the best voices in the whole Heavy Metal history, he's the best one by far!!
I absolutely agree with you.. I'm also a great fan of Kiske..
@Varity Topic kai vocal range is wider plus 40 straight yes of recording and touring Michael toured lightly from 93 to 2010
Seeing Kai singing Heavy Metal is the Law live in Prague on the Pumpkins United Tour was one of the best moments of my life. I've been a Helloween fan for over 30 years and I never thought I would see him sing it live, so to actually experience it was something else, not afraid to admit I was in tears. I love Kiske and Deris, but it was Hansen that got me hooked on Helloween and to see him relive the early years was incredible.
I'm a fan of Kai Hansen, but it's really amazing to hear the collaboration of 3 singers with their unique vocals in one band
HELLOWEEN 🤘🎃🤘
Deris is overall the best on range etc, but the soul of Helloween will always be Hansen. Hansen is the essence of Helloween vocal.
Walls of Jericho is my #1 Helloween album. Awesome music and awesome Hansen. Kiske is great, but it's Kiske.
All Kiske, all day for me. His voice is so rich and his range is ridiculous. Kai has his place, as does Andi. I love that they're all working together now. That said: Michael! Hands down!
Kai is - for me - the best. Nothing beats his energy. Thats the definition of metal for me.
Looking great Ken. Glad to see a long hair like me, I'm in my late 50's, I love the shirts you wear.
Thanks 👍
Deris is a complete musician; singer, songwriter, frontman, showman...
👍
the 3 are. Just Kiske with better natural voice.
@@flyfreejagv kiske wrote sub par material.. Deris wrote carreer saving classics...
@@fredlaroche6969 hahahaha!!!
Frontman and showman 200%
I think Kiske is best because he sings with his heart and soul. He singing is much more enjoyable than the other two singers.
I agree.
I think Michael Kiske's tone of voice is the most beautiful.
In my opinion, a good suggestion for the next "Who Did It Better?" is this:
Angra - Replacement Singers: Andre Matos - Edu Falaschi - Fabio Lione.
Agree. Kiskes voice flies 😃 Andi Deris describes Kiskes voice like that. He really likes writing songs for Kiskes voice and I think that shows how OK Deris is with having Kiske back in the band. 😊
Kiske was a member of Helloween for only six years...Andi Deris for over 20
It's very difficult to sing after being ill... Kiske is susceptible to catching the Flu...
1986. (He had just turned 18)
@@TabithaReminiec3399 With Kiske Helloween became really big. With Andi the almost reached insignificancy. After Kiske came back they went straight back to the top. As good of a singer Andi is, Kiske's footsteps were way too big for him.
By now I'm glad both are singing together. For my taste their voices complement each other beautifully,
Kai, Michael, Andi. They all have their own Helloween period. Great that they are now all united. The latest album is awesome
Kiske forever ❤️, Andi is Great too and Kai
Gamma Ray - Power plant. It's what changed my view of this genre. Forever. It's # 1 for me. The Bible of wonderfulness. Unbelievable how he mixed so many melodies. So Kai Hansen 💘
I have Powerplant signed by all 4 "evildogs" after a show in 2005; Good Times!!
Andi Deris is my favorite, He really did Kiske's part really well, he did his part well and Kai Hansen's part really well too! He is the most complete singer of the three, in my opinion. and he still didn't need to copy Kiske, he sang in his own way
Kai sang songs he wrote with helloween that kiske sang on such as future world and I want out and ralph sang a killer version of save us with gamma ray.
What Kai has not done is sing any andi songs live.
And don't forget Kai sang all of keepers one originally before micheal kiske finnaly accepted helloweens offer to join after ralph sheepers turned them down.
And Kai sang classics such as how many tears and ride the sky originally not micheal kiske which is what a lot of people think.
And I consider ride the sky one of the first so called power metal songs.
With that bieng said I still give credit to andi because he sang ride the sky on the master of the rings tour even if at the time he sounded to raspy singing it. And from that tour andi vocals became a lot better.
And I gave andi credit for singing how many tears and trying to be authentic to how Kai sung it originally and for bieng the only other helloween singer besides Kai to sing live starlight and murderer during the rabbit don't come easy tour and again trying to be authentic to how Kai sang and performed them.
As at that point those songs had not been performed live by helloween since 1986. As once micheal kiske joined a lot of the early stuff stopped bieng performed. Which angered a lot of the helloween fans who had been there in the beginning.
Kai got a lot of those fans back when he formed gamma ray.
And andi also brought a lot of those fans back to helloween.
As a lot of those early fans just did not like micheal kiske.
Deris is a great musician, but he rarely did Kiske's part well. To be able to sing those songs decently they had to play them in lower keys, and nevertheless he never hit the high notes decently; he would scream those notes rather than sing them. Just listen to any Future World performance...
@@giorgiolinas2 deris got better. With future world.
But I actaully preferred how Kai and ralph sang it with gamma ray as they both varied there vocals where it was aggressive but clean and yes kai and ralph both screamed some of the high notes but it did not sound raspy like it did with andi when he first joined.
Think how Kai approached ride the sky aggressive and clean but not raspy.
With kiske when he sang ride the sky it he hit all the notes perfectly and cleanly but lacked the aggression in the vocals with the highs and belting from the chest or even in his head voice.
Think how Rob Halford approached songs or Freddie mercury or Ronnie James dio.
Or Krause miene or udo dirksnieder you needed a mix of those style of singing for helloween songs or even gamma ray songs.
Kiske for me. Although Andi and Kai are both good singers too. The Pumpkins United tour where Michael and Andi shared lead vocals is the best line up in my opinion.
Thanks for doing something on Helloween. Kiske is one of my fav singers if not my favorite. The guy is in his 50s, and his voice hasn't lost a step.
You bet!
Michael Kiske, the Angel's Voice from Heaven!!!
Saw him the first time back in '87 with Helloween on Tour with Overkill!!!
And he's still sings great!
Greetings from Stuttgart, Germany!
Thank You Ken for making this video.
My pleasure!
Love them all but IMO Kiske is the best heavy metal vocalist ever 🤘😎👍
Yeah, they were in the same position as Iron Maiden, no point in even trying to find someone similar. Just get someone completely different and see if fans accept it. It worked out quite a bit better for Helloween than Iron Maiden. Kiske is just out of this world amazing.
Kiske the best heavy metal vocalist ever?
What about Halford?
DIO?
Dickinson?
Geoff Tate?
Jeff Scott Soto?
@@stefanreiman3527 Eric Adams?
@@stefanreiman3527 What about them? Kiske = best.
Dio doesn't not like this comment haha
No one can match Kiske absolute phenomenon.
Tobias Sammet is one of those singers who could've made a great replacement. His vocals on Vain Glory Opera blew me away and I believe he was around 19 at that time. 🤯
They all added something, Kay has the more aggressive sound, Kiske is more melodic sounding and Andi can do both so I'm a Andi fan, but that's just my opinion
Thanks for sharing!
That's a cool way to explain it, I agree.
Wow! They all totally rock, but Kiske absolutely blows me away, so underrated and magnificent 🎸
The whole wacken concert would’ve been perfect for this since all three singers performed in it and amazingly to that.
That Wacken show was just a dream come true, all 3 together doing a great performance of every song....
I think Michael Kiske's voice tone is the most beautiful.
For the next "Who Did It Better?" I suggest Angra - Replacement Singers: Andre Matos - Edu Falaschi - Fabio Lione.
Ken, you are the man.
Same, this is a good choice, use Angra 98 show in France for Andre Matos, no Rights issues there.
Kiko's guitar = the best singer.
My favorite band of all time. Kai is a great talent. Singing, playing guitar and composing a true legend. He and the band picked Kiske. Kiske is a super star a diamond. He made everything better and raised the bar the albums he sang in are true classics that will stand the time . Andi is good but it’s hard to follow the true legends before him.
My favorite is Kiske, his voice is so clean and warm, can't find any replacement.
I met Kai after the show in 2018, what a nice guy! So patient and accommodating to the fans, Markus Grosskopf (Bass) too!
I saw them live at the begining of pumpkins united tour and that was the best show of my life. I think Michael is the better singer ,Andi the better frontman and Kai is a god on earth.
They really are all Gods…I was unhappy when Kiske replaced Kai and pissed when Deris replaced Kiske but after all, these years and seeing them reunite all together it’s simply unprecedented. Three of the greatest vocalists in history all in one band. Pumpkins United we are!!
Kiske has a velvety voice, a very lively and strong timbre even in very high notes, each note is there in a clear, brilliant way. Can make slides, use beltings and Mix Voice. And in his solo career, but specifically on the RTS album, he abuses strong resonance and drives. Something unusual for him, who usually sings cleaner and weaker!
Deris has one of the most authentic voices in heavy metal history. He has a lot of personality.
Im a longtime Helloween-fan and Im in love with all 3 voices. They all have something own and something great. Thanks for this video! Been waiting for a video like this 👍🏻❤️
Love, the video and the info and comparisons and breakdowns of the vocals. Just realized my bbrain is telling me you look like Matthew Lillard with long hair.
This series is great. I think I rank Kiske a step above the others. As others are saying, Kamelot or Angra would be amazing in this series too.
Yeah, Kamelot!
Kiske is my all-time favourite singer! He was so freaking young, looks about 20 in that video. Has only gotten better. Check out his solo stuff from not too long after he and Hell🎃ween parted ways. I do love the version Gabi & Marc did! It was incredible! Hell🎃ween is certainly a force to be reckoned with… always have been… always will be… no matter how many members they eventually end up with 😜
Indeed!
I had the pleasure of seeing all of them singing together in São Paulo in the Pumpkins United Tour, it was the best concert of my life!
Thanks for having making this episode, I've been waiting a lot for it! Glad to see the next one :)
Hope you enjoyed it!
Kai is fantastic. Kiske is spectacular. Andy is great in his own right. He's done 11 albums with his own original vocals! I think Kiske rises above all others (Kai isn't far behind. ) Also, I think it's unfair to grade Andy on "Eagle Fly Free." NOBODY is going to beat Kiske on that track. Finally, I take exception to comparing Kiske to Dickinson. Bruce, never once, sang Run To The Hills exactly like the album. Kiske did his stuff SPOT ON night after night. Bruce couldn't hit the high notes live. Kiske did constantly.
Same thing with I Want Out.. Michael Kiske is the real voice for that song, not Andi and not even Kai (who wrote the song, I actually hate Gamma Ray's version of the song, I prefer Andi's version)
Great video!
So, I only saw Kiske once in 1992, I have to say that in that concert he sang the first two songs with the microphone off, and he was so powerful and I could hear his voice well. I've seen Kai hansen in Gamma ray and Helloween reunion, Kai's voice is absolutely something wonderful, as is Kiske's voice lovely. I love all of this!
I love all 3 singers, but I am a huge fan of Kai's voice (and a massive Gamma Ray fan). He always say's he's more of a brawler than a singer, but I think the Wacken performance is a great video showing what he is still capable of.
Love them all! Their new album with all three singers is amazing!
The coolest pair of jeans on a man i ever seen, Ken. I could have sworn that I saw you in concert in the late '80s at a creation or fishnet festival. I was only 10 years old...
“Kai Hanson is spot on”: Of course Ken, he’s German (and no disrespect meant here). Everything has to be perfect and precise 😁. Love those guys, all 3 of them. And thanks for this series. Really enjoying it!
Glad you're enjoying it!
At the same time, for some reason he wasn't supposed to sing on their latest album they released this year, at least according to what Kiske said in an interview lately. Kai insisted that he wants to appear on the album though and I find it strange that originally they only wanted him to play guitar and compose music.
@@adinadamian5634according to Andi and Sascha, he wasn't supposed to sing in helloween for the exact same reason GammaRay has a new singer: Kai couldn't sing well; then the pandemic happened and he recovered his voice and changed his mind last minute
Ken, you brought up some extremely valid points in the beginning in regards to things like their involvement with the creative process and if the songs were written for them versus them coming into songs that they had to cater to, etc. These are the types of things many don't think about when band member changes happen, especially vocalists.
It's cool that you also brought up that part where it just starts in with that scream! I was talking to Doug Lee of Siren last night about that (there was a song he did like that when he was in Mekong Delta).
Great video, dude!!
As far as who's better, I don't think there is a 'better' in this case. All of these guys are phenomenal.
Oh...and that recouping (backing off a little when given the opportunity is crucial in live shows, as you know!
This is my first time seeing one of your videos! I am a collector of screams, not sustained notes (although they can be great too!) in hard rock music. Listening to YOUR fabulous screams was so great! I would absolutely love to hear more!!!
Love Helloween, and all 3 singers are great. Technically, I don't think they are all at the same level, but they are great showmen, specially Deris. I've seen both Kiske and Deris live, and Kiske is singing even better now, actually. Ken, I hope eventually you get to do Accept, as UDO and Tornillo have very distinctive voices and though different in their own way, they suit their music just perfectly in my opinion.
Absolutely! Udo and Mark from Accept would be great for this!
I am absolutely loving this whole series! Thank you for doing these, Ken.
"Feria" quise decir Deris..🤭😆
Editalo 🤘
In my opinion, they all fit their era. From a pure talent view, Kiske. He should be up along with Freddie Mercury, Janis Joplin etc.
Joplin? uhh, okay.
Michael Kiske with Geoff Tate and Rob Halford ( Then King Diamond, Ian Gillan and Ronnie James Dio)
1.01million followers now! Good for you Ken. 👍 🙏....great as always.
Such a great job Ken!!! Better than I was expecting..i think because I didn't expect you to know that much about Helloween...
Kiske is my favorite. I love how his voice has that somewhat sinister underlying quality on a lot of notes which Bruce Dickinson has. He has a similar voice but does his own thing with it. I always wanted to hear the two of them do a duet. To round out my top three favorite metal singers ever, along with Dickinson and Kiske, (and there are a lot of other awesome ones) would be Ronnie James Dio who, similarly, had the power as well as that sinister sound on many notes.
I admit I had not heard much of Andi Deris, before. When I heard his vocals on 'Eagle Fly Free' my thought was, "If Kiske has a voice and vocal style similar to Bruce Dickinson I would say that Deris has a voice and vocal style that is more like Paul Dianno." BTW that is no shade - Di'anno was great with Maiden, too.
One, last thing - listen to Avenged Sevenfold's "Carry On" and try not to hear "Eagle Fly Free", especially on the chorus
Too bad you couldn't do Andi's from "Live on 3 Continents", Andi often had a tough times singing songs that were written for Kiske as the singer. This performance doesn't come close to his best live stuff.
Thanks for this video 🤘🔥finally my request is answered. You're the best Ken
Hope you enjoyed it!
Man I love this channel and this series are godly! This one I enjoyed so much that I even thought that was only 9 minutes long! Hahahaha
Thanks Ken for this video, I love Helloween and power metal, its one of my favorites, if not THE favorite style. Cheers! Hoping to see more videos like this soon!
Nothing beats young kiske
Extremely perfect your voice
your analysis is perfect Ken 🎃🤟🏻
To me Kiske is the greatest singer alive, no matter what band or genre is. His singing is so clean , and tembre of the voice is so beautyful. His melismatics are unique also, never heard vibrato like that. I was rooting for him when he decided to do solo in 1994, I wanted more "Chameleon" or Queen-like stuff from him. But that didn't work. Glad he is in Helloween again
You can find that in Unisonic, Timo's Key to the Universe, some of Avantasia, and his solo career plus what he did with Amanda Somerville.
Although I think Michael and Andi are way better singers than Kai, but there’s just something in his voice that gets me every time, it’s just unique
This series is really awesome, Mr Tamplin has such a positive and warm vibe, he analyzes everything in a very detailed yet understandable way.
I'm just a drummer but these videos got my interest and made me gain respect for all these singers !
Kai Hansen leads me. It warms my soul. Reason? Great singing, voice and Capricorn like me.
Kai Hansen has ride the sky, nobody touches that. I love to hear the three of them sing, they all have their strenghts but I always go back to that one song and the way Hansen sings it.
This is awesome 👌. I forgot all about HELLOWEEN, since I was a teenager. 55y.o. now
Great band! Thanks for reminding me of them. Going to buy some albums now!
Thanks for making this Helloween edition Ken! The thing what's also great about this band are the positive content of the lyrics. Helped me a lot and are inspirational.
My pleasure!
I love all three. Each of them has a different style but, they all have contributed to what Helloween is and it’s amazing to see them all together now. ❤🤘✨
Thanks for this review, adore how Kiske sounds even far before starting to belt. He did learn a lot from watching Bruce, no wonder my 2 all time fav bands and vocalists
Thank you,Ken.I waited for long time this reviev!
Nobody's better of these 3. Love 'em all. They're different from one another, but I can easily listen to any of the three.
I saw all three singers with Helloween in May of this year on their latest tour. Breathtaking is an understatement. They are all awesome \m/
I should also add I saw them like 34ish years prior on Keeper tour with Armored Saint and Grim Reaper. It was a killer show as well. All 3 bands. Steve Grimmett being more than a bit underrated for a variety of reasons not necessarily his own?
This latest Helloween tour had me appreciating Deris a TON. I gave up on Helloween when they went weird in the 90s when Kiske was still there and sort of just left them where they were. If you want to hear the magic of all three voices; put on the new album version of Skyfall and BLOW your mind how they all fit together. Absolute masters.
Kai was perfect for The Walls of Jericho and all the songs before. I actually like him singing them much more than Kiske. As far as Keeper 1 and 2 Kiske was absolutely perfect for those albums and can't see Kai doIng them justice. So both together are just excellent. Deris comes in and your like wow, another great, perfect fit. So I'm of the faction, I love them for each of their influences on the band
My opinion, Kiske's voice is more powerful and higher and pure and cleanest than these Deris and Hansen together
Loving this series! Kamelot would be an amazing band to analyze next!
I would love to hear Ken's thoughts on Kamelot!
@@michaelscott9967 Well, if you listen to Seventh Wonder, Tommy is clearly the better singer. However, Roy Khan's lows are so chilling and his falsetto is by far the most beautiful I've heard from a metal singer. Tommy does an amazing job as his replacement.
respect to all!!
Hello from Brazil Ken!... And nice Tshirt!
I really appreciate your videos even not wanting to become a singer...lol... mankind ears can feel safe.
Rock on!
Love the band and all the different eras they had, reflected on each of the singers. Some people enjoy pouring some hate on Deris because he’s the most different in vocal style if you compare the 3, especially when he sings Kai/Kiske songs but he kills on the songs wrote for him, and people tend to forget this. When they did the Pumpkins United tour in 2017-2018 we could also see the other side of the coin, that although Kiske could sing Deris songs, he couldn’t also match all of Deris energy and punch, because they are essentially 2 very different voices, and the songs were written to value their style and tones.
With that being said, I think this is an extreme rare example where actually the best is when they all sing together!
I’m glad that I saw the tour I’ve mentioned above, and I went with really low expectations because I couldn’t see how they would blend Kai, Kiske and Deris voices in the songs, I thought it was going to be a train wreck…and boy, how wrong was I!
The duets between Kiske and Deris, both very respectful and conscient of their strengths, their spots, their parts, great energy between both, no egos, no cock fighting, and to add to that; Kai providing superb backing vocals and eventually some leads, resulted in what is to me the ultimate experience of listening to Helloween. As a long diehard fan of them, I say it doesn’t get better than this. 😀
Thanks a lot for this analysis Ken!
My pleasure!
I've been waiting a long time for this, Helloween is my favorite band, the three vocalists are great, but I think Kiske has a more powerful voice and even today he reaches such high notes that it's chilling. What is your favorite voice among them, Ken? Thank you so much for that, master! Big hug.
I'm with you..
Hi Ken! Great video!
I love Kai, and he went on to do amazing things in Gamma Ray if you've not heard that stuff yet where his voice really fleshed out. Kiske is this crystal clear template for power metal, and Andi brings that amazing grit to his voice, and did some stunning albums in the 90s/2000s with the band. I think if we'd been talking about replacing someone like Kiske with Timo Kolitpelto who is stylistically very similar it would be a much different discussion because of what Andi's voice brought to the band with his vocal distortion. What's great is that all three singers are markedly different and brought something unique to the role.
Oh, and it was Roland Grapow, Kai's replacement who was the auto-mechanic. Ingo, the drummer, sadly died in 1995. The drums on the newest album was recorded on his old kit.
Andi fulfilled the role as a singer/songwritter/frontman and brought a new energy to the band
Michael Kiske is the greatest Heavy Metal singer of all time. Period.
I love them all!! Roland Grapow was the the guitar player who replaced Kai Hansen, Roland was a mechanic like you mentioned. Great video!! Love the Pumpkins!
Im very plesently surprised that with how good these singers are they actually manage to compliment eachother greatly together. That's very very difficult to be able to do. I think they've had a pretty good sense into how to blend the voices and so you get the best of all 3 worlds.... Well in my opinion, there's not enough Hansen.
The good thing is nowadays you don't need to decide. All are united in the Band again 🤟
Nice vid brotha. I don't think that was the best Andi vid but I understand limitations in what you can show. I love all three of them. They're all kind of equally good I think. I would love to see them live.
I appreciate that!
Kai is a monster. Most can't even play the riffs even less.sing at the same time. Helloween is a hell of a machine.Deris has a nice texture in his voice. Huge shoes to fill when you replace a singer in this band.
Great one here for the mighty Helloween! These 3 are all so fantastic. Based on the usual criteria, I think they all brought something amazing to the band, all created and contributed, all had/have long great careers with the band. I'm going to call it a 3 way tie (but know Kai singing at that level while shredding is a sick talent!)!
you make the coolest videos - so glad you picked this band!
Thanks so much!!
I love Helloween and even though they're not my favorite band of all time, for some reason having Kiske and Hansen joining back was very emotional for me, even more than some other bands I may like better. It's strange but reading comments on their newer releases I can see many people feel emotional about them.
Your version is FANTASTIC!!!!
First thing I want to say is that they are really smart and professional.
Noone can escape the aging process, esepcially not vocalists. So, there are 3 things you can do when you get older:
1) you do nothing and hope that the fans take the decline in quality (hi metallica)
2) you can quit
3) you can adopt!
Obviously, the best way is to adopt. But you have to know how, and thats the point where we really have to praise artists!
Beside the financial aspects the reunion of the band has for sure, it`s the most elegant way to deal with the fact that noone of them is able to perform at this level on a world tour 120 minutes / show. It`s nearly impossible to deliver 100% on such tours when you are young and it`s not easier 35 years later.
They split the workload in 3 pieces, the programm is well chosen with possibilities to rest for everyone, every show is 100% and the fans go crazy because everyone gets his favorite songs with the matching singer.Wins everywhere!
I personally prefer Deris, I think he can do what Kiske can, but also a lot more. And he saved the band! But to be fair, I admit that over the last ~5 years, he might aged a little bit faster than Kiske (probably because of smoking etc). I dont think that the video picks are very lucky! A more recent video with all of them in one show would probably be better. I think it`s always difficult to compare videos with very different editing and recording quality. I mean it`s pretty obvios that a voice sounds bigger on a 2018 DVD production than on a 1989 unedited pro shoot or whatever!
Finally! Great observations Ken, and it’s about time to discuss these guys. The big reveal here is the fact the “EE” and “OO” of Deris has to be falsetto because he uses high larynx twang, which works great for open vowels up high, but closed vowels don’t work as we see here. Kiske gets a full EE note with closed chords, but honestly he admits in interview that he CHANGED his technique from Keeper (what he calls Geoff TATE falsetto as discussed) to a more closed chord sound (like the Dickenson sound you noted). Hansen is great and has a lot of Halford influence obviously. I enjoy this series of comparison between singers so we can see how the different approaches operate more clearly, however it does set up a competition of sorts. Unfortunately you missed the opportunity to point out that this Helloween case is the unique one where, the “replacement” singers, all joined forces for the magnificent Pumpkins United. The new album was number one in Spain and Germany, it is a really big deal. Funny I never was a fan of these guys until I started working on singing technique a couple years ago and these guys popped up on the radar. Like the music or not, the story of comparisons/competition turned into collaboration is truly inspiring.
I remember, maybe I am wrong: Andi Deris has a passagio through the key of A, what makes it really hard for him to sing Ride the Sky.
Andi Deris is unparalleled. It has a unique timbre. Very difficult to emulate what he does convincingly. 🎙️
While at the beginning I was not into him... I grow more and more into Andy! Amazing musician!
Helloween should get more recognition in the modern music mainstream🙂
Michael Kiske !! The Best , chevere from Guayaquil-Ecuador and keep rocking
Wooo Ken, You are awesome. 2 nights ago I was thinking that it would be great to see a who do it better? Of Helloween. Cheers from México.
Glad you enjoyed it
When it comes to Helloween, it goes like this...Kai was great, but he is more suited for the guitar and he's an incredible composer. Kiske, was an exceptional singer and frontman and took Helloween to the next level/and was pitch perfect live. - However he's also very one dimensional and not suited for the low gruff type of singing. Andi, is a very versatile type of singer and has a great low end and powerful highs. He too, added a new dimension and element to Helloween. So to answer the question; they were all great and they each added to the Helloween experience in their own unique ways. The fact that they're all currently performing together in Helloween means you now get the best of Helloween all at once. This is what makes Helloween one of those musical anomalies in Metal Music. Can't take anything away from any of them and they're all Helloween, you can't say that about Maiden or Priest.
I caught a live video and a studio release of them singing together and was completely blown away. How cool is it they perform together?
Power metal is a super underrated genre of metal. I've been an avantasia fan for years. I'll have to dive in to these guys cause this is killer
Kiske had an amazing range, one of my biggest influences vocally. His tone is so round and "Orange/Red" Clean as can be. I loved his enunciation. But...I loved what Deris Brought too , his strength was not near what Kiske had BUT deris had like 7 different voices. I never got into the Hansen era...and Once again you brought to my attention why i am focusing on my upper chest range. (I had a cord paresis 5 years ago and boy it killed me) Love these video!!!!!
