- I've only heard Judas Priest once before with the song Painkiller so today we're continuing down the rabbit hole. Here they are performing "Victim of Changes" LIVE in 1983.

On the studio version, especially during the slow middle bit, he sings the lines much more, sustaining the notes with nice vibrato. When you catch live versions, the bands have been on the road for months, performing nightly, and you can hear it in Rob's voice here. He's cutting a lot of notes short to preserve his voice, probably for the high notes, for which of course, Rob is legendary.
I actually prefer the live versions of all of their earlier stuff. I've been a huge Priest fan since I was a kid but I always thought the studio albums up through Turbo sounded too clean and processed. I enjoyed the Unleashed in the East versions and the versions on the live video from the Screaming for Vengeance tour much more than the studio versions and really enjoyed seeing them live.
@Larry Pthat's 💯 valid, I think many of the bootlegs of Jimi Hendrix sound way better than the studio version, it's a wonderful saturated, organic and grooving sound... yes even with the band missing a cue because they are always in fact 'following' Jimi... Hendrix would just kind of shrug it off and keep going.
It's magical. He's the king of cool to me. Nobody sounded like the Jimi Hendrix experience, or even Band of Gypsys. I think if I found more Led Zeppelin bootlegs I would enjoy those equally.
The live version from “unleashed in the East” was pure fire!
Saw Judas Priest multiple times including this performance at US Festival 83. Metal Sunday AKA the day NewWave died. They were on fire this day. It was 100 degrees plus that day and I remember saying to my friend, do you think JP is coming out all leathered up today? They did not disappoint.
Yes and on Unleashed In The East. It's Epic! Best live album of the time. Sorry Mr Frampton. I Love Frampton Comes Alive too!
That album, Sad Wings of Destiny, is so good! Rob really gets to show his abilities on that one. A favorite of my vinyl collection
Rob is just unbelievable on that album. Also one of my favourites
An amazing album
One of my favorites for sure; maybe their most versatile.
@Michael Elam hell yeah brothah!
There is metal vocalists then there is Rob Halford who is out there on his own. #Legend
You should experience Dreamer, Deceiver / Deceiver off of Sad Wings of Destiny (STUDIO - NOT LIVE) and/or Here Come The Tears / Dissident Aggressor off of Sin After Sin album. You'll get all kinds of range!!! And he does all his own harmonies.
Love Dreamer/Deceiver but the Old Gray Whistle Test version is fantastic as well.
@DrSkeff Yes, it shows really well what they could do even when forced to hold back because BBC! But I'd be happy with studio too, it's what I listen to most often after all.
Definitely the STUDIO version of Dreamer Deceiver.
Also the Ripper
Run of the Mill as well
This is why he is known as the Metal God. His range is incredible.
Agreed..... Rob Halford IS HEAVY METAL
JP's tones, rhythms, melodies and dynamics always give me chills. I highly recommend you check out their cover of Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust" and their cover of (early-Peter Green era) Fleetwood Mac's "The Green Manalishi (With The Two-Pronged Crown)" from the Unleashed In the East live album. Top notch performances. Their biographical take on Jack the Ripper ("The Ripper") is fantastic as well.
You should definitely do their song "Here Comes The Tears". A moody jazzy blues feel that slowly builds into a driving but, tormented heavy riff.
If you’d like to hear another amazing vocal performance from Rob Halford, listen to the studio record of a song called Beyond The Realms of Death off the album Stained Class
I highly recommend you react to 'The Sentinel' from the 'Defenders of the Faith' album (but please do the studio version, not live). You will hear a great story to it and lots of variety that showcases Rob's dexterity with low and high notes. One of my favorite JP songs.
IMO, Rob IS the Ultimate Heavy Metal Voice....
IMHO and i love RJD!!! but i agree!!
Wow. Rob was singing like a guitar solo. He’s able to do what ever he wants. Awesome!
Glenn Tipton and KK Downing are such a fantastic guitar duo!
Great live classic! Check out studio version of this song, just another level. Use to have all their records back in the 80ies. Also last rose of summer is fantastic song
This song was my gateway into metal music 🤘 it literally blew me away! I was hooked I couldn’t get enough… listen to the studio version too, it’s truly amazing… thank you for your channel 🤘
At the beginning of this concert we started to make our way towards the front to see JP, we did succeed, facing the stage we were on the right side and very close, crisp and clean as always, JP was on and defiantly super tight. After JP lol we headed back to where our girlfriends were to get some space. The whole concert was epic! I was 20 at the time. `Great video btw!
This is as real as it gets. Halford was coked out of his mind for a lot of these early 80 performances. The live version of this song off of Unleased in the East is outrageous. Also, his performances on the Fuel for Life tour (1986) are legendary.
"Before The Dawn", the vocals on that track, just wow
It was such a pleasure to watch the joy on your face during this track. Priest has been part of my life nearly 50 years, and I remember my first live experience with Victim of Changes. It's not hyperbole to say it changed my life. Thank you for being so open with how this track touched you. Your smile at the gong was pure sunshine, and that's how Priest has made me feel since I was a child. Beauty is beauty. I recently read Rob's second book which brought me further happiness. Thanks again, it's a pleasure to listen to folks like you breaking down the iconic works of classic metal.
Even at his advanced age, he's still got it. He's one of the few who can still hit the notes he was hitting in his 20's while being in his 70's.
Best voice in the history of music.
He is better than everyone else even near his age.
@Stickleback🎸🙋♀️Agreed. He’s been my fav vocalist since 1st time I heard him. Also LOVE the JP sound!
A few people showed up for this one! My favorite heavy metal singer. Two of the greatest complimentary guitarists ever!
Thanks for the Judas Priest, Bethany! It would be great to hear your reaction to studio version "The Sentinel" from the 1984 album "Defenders of The Faith"
Thanks for reacting to this song. One of my favorites from Jusas Priest. I saw them in the late 80's in Honolulu. They were incredible.
Love learning from your videos. It paints all of these songs I've been listening to and attempting to sing all these years, in such a profoundly new light. If you're enjoying this journey down the Metal rabbit hole, might i suggest Phil Anselmo of Pantera and the song Cemetery Gates. It's a classic Groove Metal song where the guitar and vocals trade off in a truly amazing way.
True. The way she shines her light on things is just so inspiring.
This song on the album "Sad Wings of Destiny" came out in 1976, that's why it kinda has a 70's sound in parts! It's one of their best albums! 🤔🇺🇸
Bethany I loved your vocal analysis of this clip which is my favorite clip of Priest performing my favorite Priest song. I was with you every step of the way on every reaction and very much enjoyed your enthusiasm and surprise at Robs awesome vocal capabilities and appreciation of this great song. Big smiles. Thank you!
Wow! I just discovered you and I'm so glad I did!!
You are a real breath of fresh air - your reaction to this was so sincere and I love the spot you're coming from!
I'd love to hear your reactions to as many non-hit Bowie songs as possible, and in particular, Somebody Up There Likes Me from Young Americans and Teenage Wildlife from Scary Monsters and Super Creeps...
...thanks!
The riff in this song is so killer
One of the most fun to play as well.
Thanks for the great video. My personal favorite Priest song (and the one that I think most showcases Rob's full range) is Run of the Mill which is not often reacted to but I think you'd really enjoy it; the amount of variety in Run of the Mill combined with everything from beautiful, low cleans to the highest of highs are just so good! I really think that if you listen to Run of the Mill you will be shocked (in a good way) and very, very surprised. Have a great day.
Not only does it showcase Rob's range incredibly well, it's also important to understand that Run of the Mill is a song featured on their debut album. It was the very first glimpse into what Rob, and the band as a whole, would be capable of in the decades to follow. It's such an underrated song.
Great point, so much unexpected material on that first album.@ucheehQ
Dreamer deceiver/deceiver showcases his full range more
Run Of The Mill is an amazing tune!
I think it's tragically under-rated; such a melancholy song from a very (at that time) young group.@Dan
I saw them twice in the early 80s I felt assaulted with sound in the best way One of my fav concerts
You got Metaled old school.
I saw the Scorpions 85 tour, it wasn't quite the fire of the band's earlier shows but it was definitely powerful. Can't believe they are still at it...
Same here, they were (and are) awesome!
My first concert ever October 1988 Ram it Down tour. Slayer opened for them it was fucking awesome!!!
Saw ‘em ‘82 (Screaming for vengeance) in an events center not a stadium, standing front “row” center leaning against the stage.
Mind blowing for a 16 year old kid!
@j freedhe I saw that one too! (Ratt opened)
The great one though, was ‘82 (Blackout) and Maiden opened for them (Number of the beast)
Epic band, stellar performance.
You must listen to the studio version of this song. The whole Sad Wings album is amazing.
Priest was truly an unstoppable force from 1979 until the early 80’s when thrash and speed metal began.
The greatest heavy metal singer combined with 2 great guitarists. They were and still are pioneers.
I can’t imagine the surprise if Painkiller was the only song you ever heard from them. And the other way around too.
Awesome stuff. Dig the channel.
Do another painkiller album please, cuz every single track is good
victim of changes is from around 1975..robs 32 years old in this performance in 1983..already been on the road for a decade and made 8 albums at this point in his career..the studio version is really good, his voice is incredible . that whole era of judas priest rocks out..most of their best work is from 1973-1991 in my opinion.even tho their last album firepower is really good from like 2018
My favorite song of theirs is "Green Manaleshi with a Two Pronged Crown". Rob's vocals are spectacular 🙂
vocals very different than this song as well... she might like it. my problem with that song is its too bloody short.
fun fact: that's a fleetwood mac song
That part where he goes high and inverts the note and goes higher...oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh....oh, oh oh oh ah ahhh ahhhhh....😊...ya you know what I mean.
Got to see these guys in their prime at least 4 times. Amazing live band.
Epic song and epic performance. One of my favorite Priest tunes. Heavy!
I love Judas Priest..Seen them live in late 70s amazing concert. I wish you would do the Flame by Cheap Trick LOL I keep asking maybe you'll do it soon.
He did a live version a few years ago called 'Live at the Seminole' that is arguably his best live version.
Thank you for this. I hope you do one on Marillion. Very different than Judas Priest but great none the less. The Space (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)' from 'All One Tonight' or Seasons End from 'With Friends at St David's' are great ones.
Long time JP fan here! Rob's voice is a force of nature! Would love to see you react to a new young band, Liliac. The singer, Melody, is also a force of nature. In fact, Rob recorded a shout out video to her and is a big fan. A good first one of theirs would a cover of Dio's Holy Diver, but their originals are really incredible. 👌
Rob has truly been one of the few singers in Heavy Metal who possesses many vocal resources, which has kept him in a position of honor. My respects to Rob Halford
one of the best metal singers ever thx, his voice does so many things he is awesome
You should also check their version of "Diamonds and rust", originally sung by Joan Baez. On a second thought, you should definitely check Joan Baez, too, lol... especially Diamonds and rust and We shall overcome (1965 version BBC). I'm quite sure, you'll fall in love with her voice.
I love Rob Halferds high range, saw them perform back in the 80's . You need to also react to Jefferson Starship perform the song Jane. Mickey Thomas has a high range as well. I think you will love the groove too. Thanks for your reaction.
This goes way back to my high school days...14 or 15 years old...early 80s... I remember how quick Judas Priest went viral and spread like wildfire throughout my school district ... before innerwebs and social media was invented.... Your analysis, lol, wow, brings me to tears to see your appreciation for JPs raw talent!
If you have a chance, and want to hear the vocals really clearly, look up the original studio version from the Sad Wings of Destiny album. His vocals are just amazing. IIRC Rob Halford has some operatic training.
Love your mimics , keep up good work 🙂 Can I suggest you one beautiful but soo underrated voices of AOR\ROCK ?
Always known for his multi-range voice.
I absolutely love your reaction to this. JP seems to fascinate you, esp rob halford, and i love watching you trying to hear everything and figure it all out.
Great job.
You should check out “Fever” where Rob sings in a lower register and then “Dreamer/Deceiver (grey whistle test version)” which shows Robs full range.
One of the GREAT METAL songs of the era.
Love your reactions. Please do Dreamer Deceiver / Deceiver. I feel it's the song that shows Rob's range the best. The studio version is incredible, but if you do the Old Grey Whistle Test video I won't complain because you get Rob singing straight at you through the camera.
Metal fan or not, this is true talent. All live, all without assistance from apps or devices. This is old school when rock ruled the world and the number of bands that could get up there and play their asses off at any moment was considerable.
Yes do the album version. Then try run of the mill its a really good song with good vocal variety and the middle break is awesome.
"KK Downing" & "Glen Tipton" are the best guitar duo of all time. "Rob Halford" is the true "Metal God" There will never be another "Judas Priest"
Judas Priest is the "ACDC" of heavy metal.. This was an awesome video. Thank you for all of your lovely complements on "Rob Halford" I'm sure if he see's your video, that he will be very pleased and grateful for all of your kind words. He's actually a very kind and loving man. I really wouldn't be surprised if he actually commented on this video. Peace.. Joe
This is such a cool riff, I think even Jimi Hendrix would've liked how groovy it is.
The epitome of good 70's guitar riffs. Grinding and a little syncopated. It sounds a little like Black Sabbath, the swampy quality.
There's a reason Rob is called the Metal God. Good call on the tie into folk music, Rob covered a Joan Baez song, Diamonds and Rust, so he must have listened to it. Rob by the way, is one of the nicest guys in the business.
Hey Bethany, thanks for doing this particular song! This is a master class on Rob's vocal ability, and on how good the band is in general! I have seen them do this live, it's incredible!
I could hit these notes when I was 16 back in the 80's and everybody loved it......hit 17 and my voice got deeper. At least I could do it for a couple years so I'll always have those memories.
.
You really need to check out their performance at the hard rock just a few years ago. Love! The song "Steeler".
It's freaking awesome. The older Rob Halford is just as good as the young Rob Halford.🤘🔥🤘🔥
Oh ya gonna love Kasey Chambers. She wrote all her own earlier albums. Her father had his own travelling band that toured the outback of Australia. Plus Baby Animals. "Rush" or "Painless" . A pub band from Perth, Western Australia.
Hey Miss B
Love your reaction.
I have seen them live at the Cap Center in MD Turbo Lover tour. This was an arena probably 20k people.
I was Jar Head went with others we had a great time.
So much better acoustics at the Cap center. I'm a musician and this was an inspiration to me at such a young age. This is one of those bands you HAVE to have been there in order to truly appreciate not only Rob but KK and GT and the rest of the band. Honestly if you want to listen to the best album vocals in all Rob and the boyz have to offer it would be Unleashed in the East live.
Its always a pleasure witnessing your reaction.
Luv the variety you react too also. Would like for you to give credit to some unknowns or forgottens also ex. Randy Jackson Zebra. Talk about vocals..
Mark...
Cap center! I saw JP there in '88 for the Ram it Down tour. My 1st concert ever.
You need to gp "Beyond the realms of Death" to get his whole range...give it a listen on the studio version too...way before aototune, so its not messed with that way.
At 6:15 you are ok, he missed BUT he stayed there STEADY... WHAT A MASTERPIECE OF METAL
There is so much metal of that stage, it's crazy.
Yes! Bands where the vocalist uses his / her voice as an instrument are typically my favorite to listen to. Everything is so layered and complimentary!
Rob is like the Metal Freddie Mercury. During the Screaming for Vengeance tour he really pushed his vocals adding a lot of grit. Two songs that show the spectrum of his voice, Run of the Mill and One Shot at Glory. Can't wait to see your next reaction!
You should also listen to Rob's temporary replacement Tim (Ripper) Owens. There's live recording called Judas Priest - Demolition Time (Soundcheck) , where they play 6 songs, but Tim just absolutely nails Desert Plains.
One of my fav Priest albums.
Judas Priest is one of the great bands from before the 80 ies who got their breakthrough in the start 80 ies with the album Brittish Steel...and the song Breaking the Law! Being very versatile with songs of Joan Baez (Diamond and Rust) to the new stuff you can say the Rob and the boys have made a realm of thier own masterpiece.
Welcome to the world of Metal, Bethany. Been here for 40 years and I'm still in love with it.
Love your videos. Perfect balance between spontaneous reaction and technical comments.
Written by Les Binks ...one of their two best drummers
Yyyesss! The 70's indeed!! Their first album came out in 1974, not if that was the American release or British. A great story I heard that Glenn Tipton the guitar player went to Rob's (parents) house to talk to him about joining the band and could hear him practicing his vocals to a Doris Day song. Awesome! Peace 🕊️
Probably was watching a Rock Hudson movie at the time in drag too.
Rob denied that story.
A True Masterpiece!
One of Priest's best...Great song
Newer viewer here, enjoy your videos, you have picked some good songs/vocalists from the videos I've seen so far. Got to love Priest, this version doesn't do it justice, the live version on the Screaming For Vengeance album is great. If I may make a suggestion, you should check out the late 80's/early 90's, Skid Row, also. ( unless you already have, then disregard this part lol ) Sebastian Bach can sing his a** off, I Remember You, 18 and Life or Wasted Time were good lead vocal driven songs as power ballads but some of their hard rocking songs, he could belt those out too! Cheers from Canada.
Judas Priest is at their musical peak here. Everyone firing on all cylinders, especially Rob. So incredibly talented..
I was at the US Festival....incredible once in a life-time experience. Lots of great comments, but you are such a fun analyst and your subscriber count is well deserved!
Thanks for this review! It was interesting to hear a professional's take on on this. I believe the false notes you discussed weren't intentional. It's difficult to sing like Halford in a live concert, even for Halford. I recommend you to check out the studio version. It was recorded in 1975 (and released in 76). That's almost a decade before this live performance was filmed. You will hear that he nails every note in the studio version and the high notes are stratospheric. I don't think anyone have ever reached that level again, including Rob himself.
I enjoy all versions, studio, live or bootleg, each gives a different perspective
Rob Halford is my favourite vocalist, period, when it comes to metal. You and I are sympatico when it comes to love of diction. He is so very good at that. I love a vocalist that can stick the landing.
I'm glad you reviewed this specific live version because it sounds, at least to me, better than the recorded studio version, gives me more chills definitely
YESSSSS!!! The Us Festival! I was at that concert... Brings back memories.
On a side note, you seemed interested in Rainbow and Ronnie James Dio. You should check out Rainbow live 1977 in Munich. That was an excellent concert from the band and had great production so the sound is very good. The song "Mistreated" would be a great one for you to analyze and hear what Dio sounded like live
Having seen Judas Priest live since the Hell Bent For Leather tour all the way to including Firepower and Rob's bands Fight and Halford. He is a force of nature to see live. It makes me smile to see younger folks discover Rob.
this was his best vocal period in my opinion .........if you like smooth sound of rob, you wil appreciate the album "rocka rolla" it's so quiet and cool , you'll be surprised
I was 19 years old when this was playing. Love the 80s
Love love love Priest! So much enjoyed hearing your thoughts on them. Halford is amazing!
I agree with the poster below.. if you like this.. check out old Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant is like flying through the stars. ❤
The Halford Hunch produces some amazing vocals
One of my favourite tracks from my favourite band. Seen this track live numerous times and it is just a total sucker punch of talent, energy and power! Prefer other versions without the guitar solo break in the middle. I have seen and heard him sing this song in numerous forms, around 1978/79 his voice was unreal, in the 2000’s, it was deeper and more mellow with high pitches scattered throughout, just unbelievable range, even today at 71 years of age! Great review and as usual with Rob, even vocal coaches struggle to get a handle on his vocals!
The Warning just performed live twice on the MTV VMAs their songs More & Evolve and both are a masterclass in stage presence and live performing. Would be curious to see what you think of these performances.
Yes please, especially Evolve!
It would be totally cool to have you cover one of these Judas Priest songs ala Karaoke in your style.
This is why he is considered the METAL GOD❤and still is ❤
where Painkiller is a tour de force it is "one note" it was also 1989/90. Victim dates to 1975/1976 so it's a whole other era of music, and it highlights Rob's entire vocal range. He's one of the greats.
Hi I enjoy your reviews . I wonder if you could review a more recent version of this song or any other JP song. Halfords voice and tone have changed over the years. He still has great range but his voice is a bit more gritty than when he was younger as in this video.
Love your reactions, thank you! 🙂This is a great song for you to react to - expect the unexpected like. Much love!
Total power! Unleashed. Those are the words.
Great album ... but if you like Rob halford voice ... listen to Deep Purple live 1970 "Child in time" 😊
This never gets old!!
It sure doesn't, I never get tired of this song. Great performance here.
probably not for a video, but if you want to hear Rob's range go for 'Dreamer Deceiver - Deceiver' off of the same album. It will satisfy !
