  • Wanted to share my thoughts an experience with the new Turin DF83 when using for espresso. This grinder has been a nice surprise and a great addition to my espresso bar!

    That's kinda neat the QuickMill Vetrano 2b PID/Timer display shows the milliseconds as well, seems pretty nice and responsive. I like that. On my ECM Synchronika, I only get the seconds, no milliseconds not a big deal, just neat to see how it works on your Vetrano. Also on mine a lot of the times, the time display has cleared before I get a chance to look at it and take note, probably because I'm distracted looking at my scale which also has a timer on it which starts when flow starts.

      It’s subtle but a nice touch for sure. I usually use the shot timer in the Acaia more than the machine but both are nice for when you have those days where you ground too fine and it takes forever to get that first drop

      @@portakeeper that's the case way too often with me lol. Sometimes it turns out better that way though. So I tend to err on that side.

    How is the DF83 compared to the Atom I see you have on the right? Is that Atom 65 or 75?
    Also could you please explain to me why companies like Eureka and Fiorenzato don't make 83MM flat burr grinders in their commercial lines?

    Previously I had compared the Eureka Oro Single dose grinder (1st batch) and I thought it lacked clarity, so I didn't love it, but at the time I was also using an DF64 with the Unimodal MP burrs, so I wonder if that juxtaposition affected my judgement of the Eurekas stock burrs, because later I got the 2nd updated version of the Oro SD and had those MP burrs kinda out of rotation temporarily, and instead was using the Lagom P64 with their Stock burrs, which I thought were a nice balance of flavour clarity and body. Then when I tried the Eureka Oro SD again, I was surprised it was very similar to the Lagom P64s burrs, and I enjoyed it this time, didn't feel like I was missing out on the clarity. So, I wonder if it was the MP burrs affecting my judgement OR if it may have been the alignment or other factors that actually made that 2nd Oro SD better.

      Hard saying, I know exactly what you mean though. I’ve always loved the 75. The MP burrs are legit. Haven’t used the others to compare but still.

      The MP burrs are downright strange, they're like... "here's these beans, PRESENTED BY SSP 64MP BURRS". They have this really insane sharp almost overdone clarity.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants Рік тому

      @@davidfuller581 Yeah I can see how some may not love it, maybe not the most 'balanced' but I think they're great. Maybe it takes some getting used to. But once you are used to it everything else seems like it's lacking clarity :p
      The one downside might be that they're usually pickier of puck prep and brew parameters but once everything is just right it can be amazing.

      @portakeeper  Рік тому

      @@davidfuller581 that’s what I like about them BUT also with like the 83 it is a nice balance. Kinda funny to have several grinders for different beans but some days that extreme clarity takes it over the top. Some days you want something like the 83

    Thanks for video man.
    I couldn't find your review for the Quick mill dual boiler machine, so how is it?
    Can df83 grind Turkish?

      Try this link for the review. Also not sure about Turkish but should be able to or close. Have not tried. www.espressooutlet.net/espresso-outlet-blog/quick-mill-vetrano-2b-evo-in-depth-review/

    I have the DF64 with cast burrs and I’m looking to buy the Atom 75 or the DF83. I’ll keep the DF64 for V60 so I’m looking for an espresso focused grinder. Also any good mods for single dosing the Atom?

    Nice! How do you find it compares to the atom 75? Right now I have the DF64 with SSP Cast, and the Atom 75 with the diamond coated (actually the Lucca 75) but have been loving the Cast

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  Рік тому +1

      I too love the cast. If you have the Atom 75, I don’t think you will gain much if anything from the 83 with stock burrs. Very similar in flavor and fluffiness to the 75

    Just to clarify (no pun intended), your comments about the taste of the espresso you're getting with the DF83 are with the stock burrs, right? Or have you had a chance to try the DF83 with the SSP option?

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  Рік тому

      These are stock burrs. I think ssp offers an espresso burr for this but I have not looked yet.

    For espresso, would you pick the DF83 over the DF64P?

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  Рік тому

      Hard for me to say. Both of these are neck and neck of the df64 has the Multipurpose burrs. The DF64P/E is really great for dialing in espresso. Extremely easy. The 83 is easier than the 64 in my opinion to dial in but maybe that’s just me because I’ve dialed in so many grinders. Both were extremely easy for me to figure out quickly. The 64P/E is great for espresso though
