- REMOVE DECLUMPER AT YOUR OWN RISK! Some have tried forcing the chute off and breaking it. Don't do that. Remove the screws and wiggle it off.
Have you tried one of these? Is this in your budget? Let me know below!
Thanks to Joe Kolb for sending this out for me to test.

Lance casually hand drumming a 3:2 polyrhythm in a coffee video is what I live for 😂
I am convinced these videos are just a mechanism for him showing off all of his other random talents
Dude what about when he just dropped the beatbox wtf
Is there anything he can't do?
I literally just ordered this 3 days ago with the SSD burs, and your review got me hyped now! Thank you for the great breakdown of it!
These videos keep getting better & better. I really enjoy the pacing, to the point, yet still entertaining. Thank you for all your hard work!
Thank you for doing these review. They are both entertaining and educational.
Thanks for finally making this video! So happy having upgraded it from an SD40 and Sette 30 (though I still want to compare the Sette with the DF83). Fully agree with your comments about it straddling the divide between a conical and flat profile. It fits my preference perfectly for that reason as I generally prefer milk drinks as well. So happy with it but also wish it used a DC motor which would have allowed for the additional of variable speed.
Fun fact - its "20" grind setting is in the wrong position and is actually centered on the 19 mark on the current stickers.
Great singing voice, Lance! You are always fun and informative. Thanks for this great video.
This channel is entertaining and enjoyable. A nice relatable content creator who provides digestible information while being entertaining.
Lance is everything I like about Americans in the way that James is everything I like about the British
Just ordered the DF83 on December 31st, after hours of agony trying to decide which grinder to buy. So happy to see your review today.
Lance you are really becoming one of my favourite coffee channels.. also: I am so looking forward to a potential review of that lever machine in the background 🙏🏻
Happy 2023 Lance! Great review and insight. Might consider this now because I'm one of those people who are in between modern or more traditional shots. Good luck with the new year!
Awesome video Lance. Informative, entertaining and funny. Excellent work, thanks a lot for sharing this with us.
Sold! I have been on the fence for a while and was recommended this grinder by someone. Your video sold it to me. Thank you
love it! Hope you enjoy it!
Great review! I’ve been using a Ceado E37SD with SSP HU burrs for the past year and despite having multiple other grinders these burrs are still my main go to.
Been a Sub for a while now, and I gotta say your video quality has improved dramatically! Congrats!
One of your best Lance. Thank you for your hard work.
Awesome content as always! And so good to see, that it scales up and is evolving over time in quality. Stoked on future videos!
Is there a review of the Arco Grinder planned?
Love the videos, Lance! Keep it up
Happy New Year Lance, wishing you a wonderful 2023.
Another great video mate. Thanks for the work
great content as always man! love it!
Awesome review, love your channel!!!❤
Really good cinematography in the intro Lance, keep it up!
Great content as always dude, nothing starts my day better than watching your video while sipping my americano
Just was looking at this grinder vs the niche then this drops on cue. You truly are the king of kings
Man, the studio, the filming quality and even the shirt, how Could you not love this channel?
The attitude seems forced and not genuine.
@@normrubio well, after some time you come to the conclusion that that’s his personality. And I love it! To each his own
Also love the shirt!
@@normrubio for whatever it’s worth I’ve watched Lances videos for awhile and interacted with him several times in DMs and Discord video chats and he is who he is his through and through. I get not everyone’s communication style is for everyone, but everything I know about Lance is genuine.

Your grinder reviews are alway better than expected. And I always expect them to be good.
Your production quality is immaculate👌
Still can’t get over how nice the portakeepers look, really makes the whole set pop!
The weapons rack
Your intros are insane, I love them!
Just got my hands on one today. They made some pretty good adjustment/update for version 2!!!
Loved the little Jack Johnson interlude! I'm very tempted by this grinder but I have yet to see one of these that I think looks more aesthetically pleasing than the Niche Zero
I love you busted out some good old Jack Johnson! takes me back to high school. Your voice is on point.
The cool thing about this channel is that it is genuine and funny
Love today's review.
Thank you for the entertaining and informative video!
I like coffee related content but I still watch it for you doing music 🥰 I wasn’t disappointed
Enjoyed this review bro, love your style 🫡 multitalented😆
Thanks for the review!
Always enjoy your reviews, thanks for this informative review. It helps me alot in deciding what i truly want. ba dam tissss
You are a good singer. Good voice and intonation. Better than a few artist I've worked with.
Thanks for the good news. I finally ordered a DF83 with SSPs from espresso outlet after seeing Kenneth with a loaner as well for the first time ever my wife requested a big flat after seeing me struggle with the Kopi Deva
Awesome review as always! Thanks Lance!
Could you also review DF64P/E?
Hands down, the best coffee channel on YT !
Lance, you are a rock legend
when you replaced that wooden cap a.k.a. flying cymbal... lol
super vid man, cheers!
👊
Love you Lance! You're getting better and better with each and every video. So spot on with your assessments on all aspects of the equipment - with relation to cup quality, etc. Enjoy your goofiness and want to acknowledge how talented you are. Looking forward to your next videos. Well Done!
I've been watching your videos since day 1 and never realised i wasn't subscribed. Love how you integrate singing into your videos. You remind me of Jack Black. You are the Jack Black of coffee!
You’re the best dude. Keep it up
It would be fun to have an afternoon chillin with this guy. Love your personality
Hola! Was this Lance Johnson or Jack Hedrick? What a great review. Loving watching your channel grow. You bring great flavour to the coffee world. Thinking this might be my next grinder so thanks from Canada. Keep it up Mister and you'll not need that other gig.
How often can you say that you heard an in-depth product review and a karaoke set in one go? Awesome review--I'm sold!
Thanks for the vid. Please review that Timemore Sculptor teasing us in the background. About to impulse buy it and would appreciate your perspective 😬
As someone that is stuck between traditional and modern espresso, I absolutely love my 74mm HU burrs in the atom 75. They had a lot more clarity than the stock burrs but were not as sharp and acidic as the 64mm brew burrs.
Good to know. I currently have the SSP 64MP and find then to sharp and acid focussed. Maybe I take a look into some 75 mm grinders.
Dear Lance sorry to have been so scathing this morning over your mist the coffee dissertation. In actuality it was very excellant. It was on a par with Yale, Princeton, Harvard. I can't drink coffee any more. Oh I may relapse but I really should not. Your dissertation was top notch. I'm just upset because I can't have coffee any more. I will live vicariously through you fastenating vidios. Keep up the good work. I found it intriguing!
You finally hit the nail on the head! "ESPRESSO YOURSELF THE MUSICAL, ON BROADWAY-STARRING LANCE HEDRICK" The set design will be pretty amazing...Gigantic grinders, E61's, tampers, portafilers, scales, V60's, WDT's, beans, etc... 🙂
keep being you brother. you are awesome.
I love how most other coffee youtubers edit out the slurps, and you specifically edit it to include all of them as quickly as possible 🤣
Nice job Lance 👊🏼. Yes this grinder is damn impressive. Even more so when the price point is factored in.
After using the Sette 270, Niche, and DF64 with SSP MP and SSP Cast, I finally feel like I’ve landed on what I’ve been looking for with the DF83 with SSP HU. I love modern fruity and floral coffee, but I still want my espresso to be sweet with good body and a lingering aftertaste. Most of the best espresso I have ever tasted has been from the Mahlkonig Peak and to a lesser extent the Mythos grinders at nice coffee shops. I wish I could have those 80mm lab sweet burrs from the Peak in a reasonable single dosing form factor at home, but I finally feel like I am in the same ballpark with this setup. I felt reasonably happy with my modified DF64 and the SSP Cast burrs, but they seemed to be much more fickle with different coffees and occasional astringency. I’m excited to see what SSP can do with an 83mm lab sweet style burr.
Do you have an update to this?
@@pvtghost24 hey! I’m happy to update. I still feel very positive about the 83mm SSP HU. Ultimately, I wasn’t in love with the DF83 platform itself. The static on v1 was mildly frustrating and I don’t like the workflow of the bellows. I sold it and decided to try the Sculptor 78s and 078 which I haven’t received yet. In the meantime I’ve been using a Pietro with pro burrs and a hyper aligned Vario with Ditting steel burrs. I really like the Pietro for turbo shots and filter. The Vario is solid, but I hate the form factor and grind settings. Right now, I do miss the DF83 and I wonder if I ever would have got rid of it if I had the v2.
You were right. Modding the declumpers is a must. Thank you for your content! #goat #beatbox
I ordered my df83 a week ago after seeing other reviews and this review made me extra certain I made the right choice! I’m upgrading from a hand grinder and I fall into the category of drinking traditional and modern espresso types as well as pourover so this really was the best option for me.
Wow, that’s going to be quite a change. Please let us know your experience, I’d love to hear it.
@@Conservator. I got it yesterday and so far the espresso has been delicious. The pourover I made hasn’t been too different from a handgrinder, but I think there were many fines so I’ll try again after removing the declumper
@@cmcguire7901Thanks!
@@cmcguire7901 what are your thoughts now?
@@willmitchell8500 I still haven’t been able to tweak the declumper since I’ve been traveling and didn’t have the correct screwdriver but the espresso made from it is quite good and mostly on par with what I get at 3rd wave cafes even though my machine is lower end.
Lol, I just noticed a little Sculptor easter egg in that vid. Thank you for doing an ungodly amount of work to bring these reviews to us, Lance.
Brilliant video as always. Do I see the new Timemore Sculptur at 19:21? Hoping theres a review coming at some point!
Came for an espresso grinder, stayed for drums und singing skills. The man who has it all
heck yeah! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Sir! This made my decision in my purchase for the end game grinder! Agreed, why get two grinders when you can just switch out the burrs! Will be upgrading my BBE to the BDB paired with this sexy beast! Let's make some delicious coffee! ☕ Cheers!
The snapping to get the bellows lid on was hilarious!
Hey, Lance! Thank you for the another amazing review! Will be DF83 a noticeable upgrade in terms of taste over sette 270 in espresso and milk based drinks what is your opinion?
Awesome review as always! If the whole coffee thing doesn't work out 😂😂😂 you can have a great career as a singer
When can we expect a review of that cool lever machine in the background?
Not only did i learn some things about a grinder in this video, but i learned a very very specific new vocab word
Thanks for your contributions to our coffee experience
I’ve stalled the grinder several times while seasoning, for the same reason you mentioned. Quite a frustrating little flaw
I bought a C38 because I needed a decent grinder to use while I did my research on what I was going to get because I make espresso 7 days a week for me and my wife, but sometimes I want to enjoy a pourover. I've considered getting an Ode for that but it felt silly...so I was considering the Niche but it seems nigh impossible to get one to the US in any reasonable time, and this is the same price. Thanks for making my mind up for me, once again, Lance
Interesting and quite a diversion from the Alternate Brewing assessment on cup profile as he described it as high clarity with a little texture, as opposed to full body and texture here
Yeah I disagree with high clarity.
Dope shirt dude
The chute taper is a real issue. I had the declumper completely clogged up once. Nothing coming out and grinder still goes wild causing serious clogged up with ultra fine grinds blocking every exit. A pain to clean up. Also the inner chute might start pointing towards right due to the build up at exit. It will end up colliding with outer chute cover making it impossible to take apart. I broke my inner chute when doing this disassembly.
Great vid, thank you friend!
Thank you Lance.
Ayyy, I see that Pietro flat burr hand grinder in the background, looking forward to your take on it since us mere mortals won't get to touch one until, what, February?
Ahhh, Lance, finally, you have a very interesting lever tidbit in the background, when is that video report coming? So we should see you really pulling a shot, but paired with what grinder? Ahh, more mysteries, it seems, awaiting us.
@lancehedrick good morning sir! I’m very happy to have found your channel!! Liked and subscribed 🎉
question, I’m trying to decide on my budget plan for either a profitec Go or Appartamento (Decision coming down to whether I’m going to be needing the dual boiler or not). As for grinders, would you recommend the DF83 over the X54, a mini mazzer or Lux D? Thanks a million in advance for your time.
Lance is a top notch on coffee video as James H!
Thanks for the detailed review! I currently have a niche and I’m very happy with it, but not sure what I’m missing from flat burrs. I’m intrigued but not sure what burr set to get or if this is a fit to try flat burrs? It would be only for espresso with light to medium roasts. Thanks for any insight you could offer!
I got a bit lost in the burr talk…in comes Jack Johnson 💙 Such a nice impression Lance!
Musical Lance is a glorious development. Love it.
P100 soon?
Ohhh man, I love that shirt!!
Nice, using the filter 2.2 prototype basket as a doser!
Thumbs up for the flying cymbal! 🤘😎
Would love to see you re-visit the df64 and the burrs available as to whether its worth upgrading them
You sold me on the DF83. I was looking to upgrade the Niche Zero to get more clarity and while I prefer traditional style espresso, i want a grinder that can make good modern espresso too
Thank you for the video Lance! Do you think it’s only a matter for time before we see a DF100?
Love your content Lance. Have really been getting into a deep dive and learning more coffee. Recently got my first real espresso machine and looking for a new grinder. I am leaning toward a P64 but this video has me thinking one of these D83 might be a great option. Would love to see/hear a comparison of the two
Option-O Lagom P64 is more sleek / refined and beautiful, with a slightly better workflow, I like the magnetic portafilter funnel that comes with it the best (more cleanliness and more perfect out of the box, no declumper issues usually I believe), and you get variable RPM which is handy for getting a little more versatility out of the same burr set, but for the Price difference it's hard to fault the DF83, build quality is pretty good, it's super heavy, coffee taste is nice and smooth, you currently do have less burr options in 83mm but that might change soon. Longevity of the DF83 is unknown since it's a lot newer, although the P64 has had some iterations as well and the latest version is kind of 'new'.
Thanks for the trigger warning! I have misophonia. Great video! I have been excited to hear about the DF83
a plastic dosing cup? Yes to the singing...I whipped out my Martin and accompanied you...we rock!
Thanks for the review, Lance. I'm wondering if have you heard of infrared roasted coffee and if so what do you think of it?
Goddamnit I love this man.
I think this is one of those grinders most coffee enthusiasts want in their brew bar. It's not the most beautiful one but seems like it checks all the other boxes.
P.S. Are you planing to do any outdoor videos from Portugal? I would love to see that. 😊
Thanks for the high quality content here and taking your time to make these videos superb. There was a point in the video that I lost Internet connection but I thought it was you playing a prank and freezing yourself haha.
loving the Vostok in the back when you gonna do a demo
Came across your channel recently when researching for a new grinder, great content! I was pretty much settled on the df64 but then started to consider the df83, do you think it's worth the extra budget for the 83?
Could you do a review on the specilita? I've seen many reviews but none of them discuss details like burr geometry, retention, etc as well as yours.
