I've always found the Church of Atom to be fascinating, and makes enough sense to be believed as a religion. I mean think of the state of the wastes, most people need community and guidance. Religion has always offered that, and the lack of education about what radiation and atoms are makes it really easy to spin into something grander, especially when you have people immune to it without becoming ghouls to boot. I'm glad we had the option to join them in Far Harbor, even if it was a monsterous choice.
The deep look into the Children of Atom was by far my favorite part of that DLC. I never did side with one faction or the other though, I've always picked the route that brings a peaceful end to the tension.
Was it really monstrous though. The fog comes and goes. Blowing up the nuke will kill the harbormen eventually from the heightened rads. Killing and replacing people is the most monstrous. Leave atoms island to the people who can actually inhabit it. Remove the people who murdered them. Remove Dima he's actively a monster who will help nothing as made obvious by his replacements not stopping the bigotry and murder of children to begin with. Children of atom is the only actual answer.
One thing I wish Bethesda had done, was including praying station for settlers in the Settlement Workshop. A floor mat or a bench. That way, you could have settlers boost morale through religious means, by praying to Atom (or any deity) within the Fallout universe. This of course would only appear if you joined the Children of Atom.
I feel after the Great War, a movement towards spiritualism might be what brings back a semblance of peace and normalcy. The bombs drop, may as well try to find any reason to stay sane, even if it entailed dancing around sacred fires, or carving runes, or praying to atoms, or whatever the crazies of the waste believe in. It would add depth to the game as well, differing factions with different beliefs, i.e. you follow X Gods and they follow Y Gods therefore they war against one another. Plenty of quest material right there.
@@bjarkiengelsson definitely, I think you are onto something there. Tribes ,tribalism almost always comes with a certain spiritual aspect. Customs or tradition, that avenue could be built on more maybe, with some imaginative writers/devs in the next dlc or Fallout game.

I have cavorted with his children, and witnessed the pernicious falsehoods peddled by the nonbelievers huddled by their gates and the False Man in his tower. Far Harbor is a holy land, Atom's holy land; and those who will not submit to His Glow shall face his wrath. Glory to Atom!
It is the holy land of Atom people have been blessed to walk through his fog unscathed and we are now blessed to see his profits. We have seen the mother and now through division we will see him. Glory to Atom!!!
I feel like Fallout 3 could have an amazing sequel. Having the largest water purification project a stone's throw from where a radiation based religion started sounds perfect for a conflict. Not to mention that the BoS leaving for the Commonwelath after assuming such a large role would create a massive power vacuum.
imagine if the COA found the nuke storage building in the capital wasteland? no sign of them in the lonesome road, though. in the japanese copies of fallout 3, you can't detonate the bomb in megaton; for the obvious reason.
A theory i came up with: Megaton was a prewar POI and the bomb was put there by vault tec as decoration. It being undetonated would be because, due to corporate negligence, a dud was not used like it should have been.
As much as I've seen them as nothing more than unstable, hostile-to-everything bandits, the only thing that gives credence to their beliefs, is the Vision Quest of Far Harbor. To actually witness the Mother of the Fog... it rather gives this game a "Far Cry vibe". A hallucinating phase. Made me stop and think, "So, wait, there's really something to this Atom? So then, the Children aren't completely crazy, after all?" Although, I still think the whole "split atoms, split universes" thing is absurd. It's nothing more than their molecules exploding at the speed of light.

The Children of Atom are one of the best additions to the Bethesda era of Fallout. I love it when those living in the post apocalypse forge their own new belief systems and mythology to explain and cope with the ruined world they live in. While I wouldn't want to then to become overexposed to the same extent that the Brotherhood or Super Mutants have, I definitely want to see more of them going forward. If we ever get another game set in the Midwest, it would be cool to see them slowly starting to push west from the east coast.
I find it really funny that everyone including myself took to the children of Atom. I always had a feeling that they were a reference to the movie Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Remember everyone bask in the Glow of Atom.
I honestly always thought the bomb being in the center of megaton was really dumb. It makes a bit more sense knowing that the children of atom began the settlement.
If you look at it logically, destroying the cult is the only viable course of action. Even if you go along with Dima's plan to replace Tectus with a synth, (which itself is morally questionable at best) it would only be a matter of time before this kinder, gentler Tectus was overthrown and replaced by someone far more radical. Most likely Richter who, given his military background, might begin militarizing the cult, transforming it into a, for lack of a better term, crusading force which would actively wage war against all "non-believers". And if the Children went down that road, their immunity to radiation would give them an overwhelming advantage against almost any other faction and it might only be a matter of time before they secure enough bombs to bring about their "Great Division".
just kill everyone at far harbor, especially that mayor at the docks, you fcking help her pathetic attempt of a community against some fanatics that try to eradicate them and she tells you to piss off when you kill them. All of them are assholes except alan

i really really would love to see chapter in fallout where the childern of atom become a major threat in the wasteland, sorta becoming almost a Spanish inquisition like figure.
The beginning of this video was a bit wrong. You make it seem like the Children were the ones who founded the town and rule the town. I don't think that's remotely true if you play the games or listen to the dialogue. They were one single faction of the survivors that settled in the crater. They were one single faction of those same settlers who dismantled a nearby airport to construct the walls.

One thing I really didn't appreciate about Fallout 4 was how it divided everything into a pretty clear line of 'good guys, bad guys' and felt the need to drag every major group into this divide. The peaceful preachings of Cromwell are turned into a fanatical group of religious zealots murdering their way through the world, the western Brotherhood of Steel dedicated to helping those around them degrade into a fanatical, militaristic tyranny just because Elder Lyons and his daughter died (and apparently everyone is on board with it), the institute full of nerds dedicated to scientific research is a generic boogeyman bad guy where everyone is an asshole and that you must destroy in every path except the one where you're not even allowed to really influence the new direction of the institute. Meanwhile the heroic underground freedom fighters are fighting the good fight against slavery and the heroic citizens militia is seeking to rebuild the Commonwealth. It was very shallow and disappointing.
