The main army of the empire is the Astra Militarum(Guardsmen) and space marines usually act like shock troops/special forces. Also it goes kinda like this Emperor>Primarch>spacemarines and the spacemarines are created from the gene-seed of their Primarch thats why the chapters are all different. Hope you enjoy the game and the hobby!
I would say Bricky's lore videos are a good starting point for any new fan, they aren't massive lore dumps and are well explained while being entertaining to watch since there's A LOT to listen to, BUT they don't go too much in depth because that would drive anyone insane.
He has a whole podcast, Adeptus Ridiculous, for going deeper on the specific topics. The format is him explaining it to someone who starts the podcast as a total noob, and they have great chemistry as co-hosts. It’s my favorite podcast out there.
The playlist is Luetin's playlist of videos. I'd say, if he is 10 hours in already, he is way past the amount of information Bricky brings on top of having less fan theories explained as fact. Sure, I agree that Bricky is the best intro, but ten hours into Luetin, Bricky is a bit way back behind. Though it is entertaining to watch though
The Astra Militarum are the main, there's only like 1 space marine for every 9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 imperial guardsmen
Bit of an exaggeration there. Most liberal estimates put astra militarums strength at around 300,000,000,000,000 (300 trillion). There are around 1000 chapters of marines, assuming codex compliance is around 75%, that all codex compliant chapters are at full strength (rip lamenters) and that the average size of non compliant chapters is around 2000 (give or take some because of the black templars), that would give us around 1.25 million, which makes the ratio around 1 astartes to every 2,400,000 guardsmen. This is of course ignoring that an army requires around 60% of its numbers to be logistics. Doctors, cooks, drivers, technicians etc. Granted, some of these would be covered by the Adeptus Mechanicus, you should remember that every. single. marine. is a warrior first and foremost. Apothecaries, Tech marines, all of them are warriors with additional duties. All auxiliary roles are fulfilled by serfs.
@@BennyAscent for every astartes, there's 1 (or 3) entire armies of guarsmen including support roles. That's a bit mind blowing when you think about it.
@MrFreakHeavy it's right around the mark where you might be able to wrap your head around the numbers. Once your talking about millions the human ability to comprehend senses of scale are grossly underprepared for the task
Glad to have you on board, brother :) If you want to read something I highly recommend you the Ultramarines Novel series. They can be bought as a three pack in one book because they arent that dense all together. Its about Uriel ventris, a character going through a similar martyrdom as Titus does. They are a perfect starting book series to get into the lore as well as holding the exact vibe "bolter porn"-vibe Space Marine 2 has. The great thing about 40k lore is that there isnt a giant plot of main character sinterconnected with everything, like Dr.Who or Startrek, where you have to learn the entire plot of the main characters to get the overall picture. so you can start wherever you want and learn it as you go.
Highly recommend finishing that box, seeing if you like the hobby of painting these guys, and if you do hit up a video on the various factions of 40k if you haven't already. See what faction piques your interest then look up art of them, watch/listen to lore videos about them, and see if it's something you're really into. If you do really like them grab their Combat Patrol box (Usually ~$120 on eBay, MSRP ~$170 from GW/local hobby store). Assemble and paint up that box and try to find folks down to play a combat patrol game. My local store used to have weekly 500pt (points are the balancing factor for army building, combat patrol boxes are typically ~500pts) patrol games so I'd imagine others might do something similar. There are also "escalation leagues" that stores might do where everyone starts out with a small force, plays against each other, then over time everyone starts adding more to their army until you get to a proper full-sized game. As for some hobby advice, that shading paint you mentioned is great stuff. Nuln Oil/Agrax Earthshade are your friend. We call it "liquid skill" for a reason. Base paint your mini, coat it in one of those depending if you want a black or brown tint, let the mini dry, then go back over the flat areas that shouldn't be shaded with your original base paint. Boom, you've got a pretty good mini just like that. Some minis honestly even work fine with the dull finish the shades give and have a lot of nooks and cranies that keep the shade from pooling on a flat area and looking bad. Space Marines are bad about that which is why you definitely need to go back over them with the original shade paint. I also highly recommend watching Duncan Rhodes' painting videos. He used to be GW's primary painting tutorial guy until he left and now has his own UA-cam channel where he continues to make fantastic painting tutorials that are incredibly easy to follow along with. Hell, just the other day he put out a beginners painting video due to the popularity of Space Marine 2 bringing in new hobbyists. Finally, avoid the sin we all have made. Paint whatever minis you have before you buy more. The Pile of Shame is real and it is a menace.
Ah, yes Lore master Luetin I see. Perfect choice for private lore diving. Long videos but the ones he makes have the most up to date lore and even several lesser known facts about the lore. He tells it to you straight. what is lore, what is speculation and what are his theories.
The lore is huge. The Horus Heresy (origin story of the setting) alone is a series of 54 books. And that just tells you the history of the Imperium from 30k.
Welcome to the hobby. I recommend looking into the Badab war lore wise. Has a bunch of cool Space marine chapters and lots of betrayal. Model wise, the best way to progress is never be afraid to make mistakes and try new technics
If you want to play a game with the models you have, I recommend Kill Team. It's a bit like the main 40K team but with a single squad on a smaller battlefield. If you have Space Marines you'll only need about 5 or 6 of them for your team.
Here’s a HUGE painting tip if you want it. Get some stuff called LA's Totally Awesome degreaser, it costs about 2 bucks. You can soak a painted model in it for months without issue and in only a few hours in the concentrated degreaser (which you can reuse for hundreds of models) the paint will come right off. Don’t be afraid to try new things with painting because you can always strip the paint and redo with whatever colour scheme you want! My Chaos space marines have been painted like every warband in the warp at this point 😂 Edit: welcome to the hobby!! RIP to your wallet
As someone who originally got into the hobby in the late 90s (tyranids player and man do most of those 90s models not hold up. Carnifex still slaps though) and then came back into the hobby when age of sigmar, the replacement for the original Warhammer fantasy came out its great to see the influx of people joining the hobby due to space marine 2 and also the Astartes project. Also for space marine numbers at any given time there are ~1000 chapters of marines with each chapter being made up of ~1000 marines so about 1million total at any given time. For the militarum its more vague but low end would be many billions and higher end being in the trillions of total guardsmen so space marines are an incredibly specialized shock troop that most people in the imperium will never see. When they refer to you as his angels in the game it really is a once in a million lifetimes event for them. It would be like you and some friends fighting some high school bullies and seal team 6 helicopters in and mows them all down. Even that is a poor example of how special space marines showing up to a fight is.
If you enjoy cRPG's such as Baldurs Gate or Pathfinder, the most recent Owlcat game, Rogue Trader, is a PHENOMENAL way to be introduced. With extensive sources to explain terminology, and a detached story that is enhanced by - but doesnt require - knowledge of the setting.

Long time painter, player, lore lover here. There is nothing in the world more relaxing then painting some minis while sitting down and listening to a 40k audiobook to keep you motivated to paint. 40K was the only "nerd hobby" i didn't get bullied in school over, the second i saw my friend's older brothers 3rd edition Tyranids book cover art in 2003 I was in, and i think that's what so cool about it if you like what you see on the surface there's something there for you no matter what kind of nerd you are and even if you don't like sci-fi there's always age of Sigmar
Check out the Warhammer Eisenhorn audio books or books . The stories are absolutely incredible! I got the first one a few months ago, I've now listened all to 4 of them (40+ hours ) and thinking about listening to them again. They are honestly amazing.

40k is amalgamation of hundreds of people's input and work over decades... LOTR and GOT are both from one person. To say that 40k is intricate and well crafted is a bit... well... let's just say that there's gigatons of contradictions and holes in 40k universe and more you read about "official lore" weirder it gets. What 40k is is a parody. It's so grim dark, so desolate and brutal that it flips aroudn to being entertaining and fun.
