It's good if you are actually trying to tightly design a game in that way, but we also need room for the spectacle and interactive games. Not everything needed to be a sweat fest shooter.
The Finals is probably the only modern day game with good destruction physics and even then it's not even AAA it's an Indie game made by a smaller studio of ex AAA devs
I renember back then i was marveled at how incredible the graphics, physics and details on these games were and fantasizing about how much better they would be on the future... Well looks like we were at the peak already.
Same, i remember watching my bigger brother play hl2 and crysis on his pc back in 2006-2007 and i was wondering about how cool games will be in the future. Ffw a couple years and I’m playing masterpieces like bf3 and black ops, so my wish kinda became true
I played videogames since the early '90s and I got to tell you: gaming peaked in the early 2000s. Everything after that is just a disgrace. Today the medium has been totally corporatized by big companies whose CEOs know nothing about gaming. Games today have no soul, no ambition, nothing. It's all empty and souless corporate shit.
This whole video shows what video games were in late 90s and early 2000s. Games were built different in 2000s compared to Video games nowadays. Everything is F2P , micro transactions to mid-gen refresh. Today’s era in video games are so dumb down it’s upsetting 😢. Love the video mawk❤❤❤
@@samzony artisan - "a worker in a skilled trade, especially one that involves making things by hand." Like professional woodworkers that charge a grand for a varnished plank, those are the people I generally mean. (varnish is nice finish for wood)
Last really good game that I played was Armored Core 6. But Fromsoft is literally the only devs who seriously want to make games and it's Japan devs. Western gamedev is 99% slop.
Who would have thought that the limitations actually, tangibly spawned creativity, today not only devs have infinite resources but also miserably fail at being artists.
The extremely complex models, shaders, and textures that devs commit to really hamper their ability to contort facial flexes. They try to make faces look "real" without giving them actual movement and expression. Just look at older horror games with character models and monsters having their whole shapes contort and move and get mutated with complex animations. Instead, we get overly detailed static meshes for everything that the devs just can't actively work with. Instead, they have to cut the camera away during moments to hide the fact they can't animate complex motion.
What? Plenty of games have highly detailed models and still exhibit complex facial expressions. Not every game is a modern ubi game. Look at the last of us, uncharted, rdr2, ghost of tsushima, ratchet and clank, stellar blade, infamous second son, spiderman, Detroit become human, all the dark picture games, the yakuza/like a dragon games, FF16, FF7 remake, the re remakes, and silent hill 2 remake. And That's just big studio games off the top of my head.
2003 to 2011 is the absolute peak of the game industry. It's not close. It won't eve be that good again. Sad. But true. Being a late teen and early 20s man in this era truly was a godsend if you were a gamer. Greatest times of my life really. And gaming was a major reason why.
Such a great video bro. Watched the whole thing. I’m so happy you took a huge dump all over the new “Saints Row” while also highlighting just how special the original 1 & 2 were and still are today. Also loved how you included Fear, Bad Company, Red Faction Guerrilla, Far Cry 2 & Crysis. All phenomenal games that I still play to this day. They truly don’t make games anymore with the same amount of effort and creativity & you put it all on full display. Glad I got to live through the golden era of gaming when I was a teenager. Respect.
It's clear as day, games were better in the 2000's. I mean Far Cry 2 has more details than Far Cry 6. Gaming is pathetic today, and this current generation blows by the way. I have not seen many good games for the PS5 or XB series and we are more than half way through the generation. I am happy staying on XB one, PS4, PS3, PS2 , PS1 and OG Xbox also Gamecube. Nice video, it really paints a clear picture of how dire the gaming industry have become, it's important that we speak with our wallets until the industry stops treating us like fools.
Couldn's say it better myself. I thrive on emulation, everything up to and including PS3 and 360 can be reliably emulated on PC. All consoles and arcades on emulation plus all classic PC games from places like GOG and of course less legal places, and it is heaven.
I liked the ending a lot. There's a lot of garbage today, but even among that garbage, there will always be some gems still releasing, no matter how terrible the industry gets. Gaming is really negative these days, but I think that should be the prevailing message. Vote with your wallet, avoid the slop, only buy games that truly deserve your time and money. You only have so much of both.
Couldn't of have said it better. Games like Astro Bot & Space Marine 2 prove that despite how negative things are now, Good AAA still do exist! Thank you for watching BTW!
In my opinion, a game doesn't need to have crazy physics if they don't benefit gameplay. But some of the examples are just crazy, like, how can a simple thing like trees falling down became a thing of the past?
@@Agent56000 Quarter century older... Back in late 80s and early 90s there was a clear difference between computer games and console games. Console games were very childish and all arcade. But computer games, mainly in PC, started to be very ambitious. What I mean, computer games were increasingly made for adults. We have very hardcore gaming back then, like realistic military simulations, RPGs and strategy games. Casual games were story based puzzle adventures but they were often extremely well done. One of the reason was that PC was very expensive, that is used for work and gaming was option so the games were made for that audience. That golden era of gaming stopped when Playstation arrived and 3D-gaming started to be more common. Same games were made both consoles and computers, and hardcore games vanished. Also game developers often didn't know how to make 3D-games properly as technology became more common so many 90s 3D-games were garbage. Many of the all time best games were made to PC in early 90s. At one point in time, top games seemed to keep coming every month. I've still got archive of games that I haven't yet played from that era but are known to be top notch, so I will play them now when new game releases are micropayment garbage.
@@gruntaxeman3740 I feel jealous of you guys. You got to experience them. I was born in 2006, and I was about 16 years old when I got to know about consoles (I had very less exposure to gaming) But honestly, modern games suck, in the sense, most do. I prefer older games. Maybe from 2010 to 2015
@@Someone_2406 Early 2010s and late 00s was indeed great time. We got Stalker - shadow of chornobyl, Dead Space, GTA V, Europa Universalis IV... Excellent games. PC game development changed mid 90s when they started to make games to Windows, and that caused issue that isn't really solved. When Windows is changed, old games break and game developers don't fix them. Old console games and DOS era games (with DOSBox emulator) are more accessible. What I mean is that old games can be still experienced. Especially point and click genre because games were originally written to game engines with virtual machines, that are ported to modern computer so they can be played natively. Nearly every point and click adventure made by LucasArts is excellent game and some of them are remastered. GOG is also selling RPGs from that era like Betrayal at Krondor. If the old game hasn't been remastered, the low resolution on the big screen is annoying, so that may require to move the monitor further away. Upcoming Civilization VII is also game from 1991 with added mechanics and graphics. Early 90s military flight simulators suffered from old graphics. So even while they are playable, I would not touch them. They were anyway delivered back then with a thick physical manual, UI is weird and needed to keyboard layout somewhere and joystick to use that fighter, so the effort is no longer worth it to be able to simulate things with ugly 320x200 graphics. But, I wish we got that _mindset_ back and similar stuff with modern gaming technology.
UA-cam got sensitive and removed my comment for criticizing modern gaming and today's gamers so I just wanted to say that I loved this video and that you got some serious Crowbcat quality right there

@@MAWK3This is seriously an eye opening video dude. It’s what happens when the people making the games are hired because they are “safe” picks and comply with the supposed “industry standard”. In layman’s terms, you hire a square to make games, you get boring games. All of the things that made games fun are fundamentally lost because the people who made the games back then weren’t the “safe” picks but rather people, who on a large scale, were ambassadors for the common man.
Things that I miss. -Splinter cell Convinction and Blacklist: Ai is actually making a search by walking room by room and looking behind possible cover. So basic yet ever since the release of blacklist in 2013 only watch dogs legion managed to get it right, Star wars Outlaws made by the same company messed it up. -Ai facial animations which actually looks right. Again last time I seen it done right in WD legions. -AI on the map actually doing something like gardening cooking or whatever and not just standing or walking. 2016 AC Unity did an impressive job, Watch dogs keept the basics and many game still sucking up with it. -AI actually communicating so that the other will respond or act the way being ordered/ asked and not just randomly chatting stuff. (See above) -Ai actually calling the other one out by name: Call of Duty Until Black ops. -Ai actually capable to tell the other where the player is located, Like "behind that car, On the second floor etc" which is criminally overlooked in stealth games. Last ever encountered this in Mercenaries 2. Ever since only Mirror's Edge Catalyst managed to get as far as giving a general "Up there!, above us, down there" chat.
Translated by Google: As a car enthusiast, what bothers me about the current generation of consoles is the absence and lack of major racing franchises on both consoles and PC. Where is Midnight Club? Where is Burnout? Where is Ridge Racer? Where is Driver? Where is Motorstorm? And other franchises that unfortunately remain discontinued from the PS3 and Xbox 360 era. And no, don't go saying ridiculous nonsense that racing and driving games are only for car enthusiasts because it's niche. That's a lie, racing and driving games (Arcade and simulator) are designed for everyone whether you are a car enthusiast or not.

Every single thing needs to be monetized. And it's not just official mods but a lot of fan mods are hidden behind paywall. Want new outfits for MH World/Rise? They pay me $6 each month.
Yep. Game studios now are about making games pretty without much substance. It’s like if someone made the most delicious-looking meal possible but it tastes bland and makes you feel frustrated you spent your hard earned money on it in the first place.
This is what you get when fancy graphics are the pinnacle of technological evolution and not everything else that goes into making a good game. Ever wonder why graphics cards are as expensive as they have ever been, games are as unoptimized as they have ever been, yet all the marketing focuses on is on how good they all look? It's a ploy for consumers to buy worse games at higher prices that run worse to sell more hardware that will run them.
Lack of Time , Money and just pure incompetence. It feels like there are a lot of young devs who don't know any better. Who , after 15 years , is still left to teach them. the big nerds are all gone but these were the people that made the good games.
Modern AAA Games: Profits first, the moment it isn't profitable the cords are cut. Gameplay is designed by beancounters to maximize sales who define fun as a number, and reduce players to statistics. Risks aren't allowed, the only innovators are smaller studios who have to take risks to break, or make the market. Any semblance of risk is disguised as sequel to an existing franchise in the form of a spinoff, OR its a game that releases as an over saturated genre as a "safe" choice, OR its a remake, remaster, reimagining, redo, rerelease. 2000-2010 AAA Games: Developers controlled development, they took risks because they ultimately made games they wanted to make. If the gameplay before launch wasn't to their liking they changed it, but there wasn't necessarily the big publishers we know today meddling in the affairs of what they have no interest in. The market at this time is not nearly as over saturated as it is now. Even if the game wasn't "perfect" it still could sell. A large amount of the existing genres, and franchises can trace their roots back to this era for many now considered standard game mechanics. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows though. This is also the era where live service started. With the internets speed being much more reliable for the average player to have, developers started the trend of post launch updates. This could be considered good if the game was unplayable at launch since they could deploy a patch to fix it. It also meant that nerfing/buffing for balance became much more common. Same with patching exploits. Finally, it became ever more easy for developers to see random peoples feedback, negative, or positive, for better, or for worse.
It’s so weird how companies with millions of dollars will make a cash grab or re release multiple versions of the same game. But some guy in a basement with just a computer can make a masterpiece of gaming!
Crazy how studios back then that's full of ppl who dedicated themselves to their craft can make a better game than today standards. Sure the graphics got better but less techniques are involved
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the reason why people gets so excited about remasters and even remakes. They miss those days and have this wish to come back to them.

I'm not doing a sport either
eSport also ruined fighting games since thousands of casuals came by, expecting to be the next Evo Moment 37 makers and because they found out our games were hard, devs made everything to appeal them
It's good if you are actually trying to tightly design a game in that way, but we also need room for the spectacle and interactive games. Not everything needed to be a sweat fest shooter.

The Finals is probably the only modern day game with good destruction physics
and even then it's not even AAA
it's an Indie game made by a smaller studio of ex AAA devs
The Finals destruction is cooking it, a breeze of fresh air in 2023.
Theyre the same devs from the old bad company games

I renember back then i was marveled at how incredible the graphics, physics and details on these games were and fantasizing about how much better they would be on the future...
Well looks like we were at the peak already.
Same, i remember watching my bigger brother play hl2 and crysis on his pc back in 2006-2007 and i was wondering about how cool games will be in the future.
Ffw a couple years and I’m playing masterpieces like bf3 and black ops, so my wish kinda became true
We had no idea we were living in the golden age and it's over now.. at least we were there to experience it while it happened. 🙁
Glad you didn't yeeted the poor bird in that Crysis clip, I know it must've took a lot of restraint
How were facial animations in Half Life 2 better than 90% of games today?
Even the tf2 ones are better
Style over substance man, always. Valve really knew what they were doing back in the day.
Honestly the destruction on The Finals Is absolutely crazy, shit can get obliterated within seconds.
I couldn't have said it better myself *High fucking Five* straight-up
Thats why i play indie

This whole video shows what video games were in late 90s and early 2000s. Games were built different in 2000s compared to Video games nowadays. Everything is F2P , micro transactions to mid-gen refresh. Today’s era in video games are so dumb down it’s upsetting 😢.
Love the video mawk❤❤❤
It's definitely not the same anymore 😞 Thank you!!
Out of all the modern games, the finals actually does pretty well and actually feels like an upgrade
Out of all the modern game studios, Sony and Microsoft are active destroying gaming

I want a game with crazy real physics at the expense of ps3 graphics. Wouldn’t mind.
R.i.p good days of old school gaming
R.i.p best days of almost 3 decades of life.😢
This video was well made and gets the point across
Such a great video bro. Watched the whole thing. I’m so happy you took a huge dump all over the new “Saints Row” while also highlighting just how special the original 1 & 2 were and still are today. Also loved how you included Fear, Bad Company, Red Faction Guerrilla, Far Cry 2 & Crysis. All phenomenal games that I still play to this day. They truly don’t make games anymore with the same amount of effort and creativity & you put it all on full display. Glad I got to live through the golden era of gaming when I was a teenager. Respect.
Thanks Madness man for the support! I felt as if the 2022 devs ignored a lot of what made the OG's so beloved. SR 2006 has aged very well to!!
This is a great video, hopefully the next generation can have more competent game engines and developers.
Thanks dude! I fully agree
I never thought you would do this kind of video, it's pretty good.
Glad you liked it!
Just like before
In my opinion, a game doesn't need to have crazy physics if they don't benefit gameplay. But some of the examples are just crazy, like, how can a simple thing like trees falling down became a thing of the past?
That's because trees are made of "carbon credits" now. They only exist if corporate says they do.
0:21 For anyone wondering, this game is Shadowrun (2007), a now defunct multiplayer game.

That was great time.
Another good time was around 1990.

@@Agent56000
Quarter century older...
I was born in 2006, and I was about 16 years old when I got to know about consoles (I had very less exposure to gaming)
But honestly, modern games suck, in the sense, most do. I prefer older games. Maybe from 2010 to 2015
@@Someone_2406
Early 2010s and late 00s was indeed great time.

I still play the following games. Old school and to the point:
Gears 3
CoD4
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
L4D2
Halo 2 PC
Metro Trilogy

Underrated video, great job.
(See above)
-Ai actually calling the other one out by name: Call of Duty Until Black ops.
Translated by Google:
As a car enthusiast, what bothers me about the current generation of consoles is the absence and lack of major racing franchises on both consoles and PC.

Seeing COD4 multiplayer brought back sooo much memories, thank you
