I was going to mention the rock concert too. There wasn't very many choices back then; American Bandstand, Soul Train, maybe Austin City Limits....but I feel everything started going downhill once Solid Gold came on the scene.
I would come home early from parties to see THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL! My friends thought I was crazy. But in those days, and my age, was the only place to see bands play on TV. Was too young to go to concerts at that time, so this was the next best thing. I’m 64. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
As others here have said "Blue Bayou" is a must hear. Linda could sing anything; rock, folk, blues. opera, Mexican traditional standards and I'm sure I'm missing some. She was the first female rock artist to sell multiple consecutive platinum albums and fill stadiums on summer concert tours. She was the bomb. Love that you appreciated her voice as much as we did back in the day. Great reaction.
The Midnight Special was a weekly TV series that aired on Friday nights after The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson on NBC. It aired from 1972 to 1981. I can remember always trying to talk my Mom into letting me stay up and watch. Sometimes I succeeded! Loved that show!
The Eagles were basically formed through her. Glenn Frey was background vocals and guitar while Don Henley was drum and vocals for her. They started playing around and decided to go out on their own. Blue Bayou is a 2nd great song of Linda's
Linda Ronstadt was a powerhouse vocalist. She can ROCK with the best of them!. She never sang a song that wasn't top tier. One of my favorites of hers is an early one titled "Long, Long Time" that will absolutely break your heart, she sounds so sweetly vulnerable. I have seen a clip of her performing it on the old Glen Campbell show, but there is a short version and a long version of the same performance. Either is good but the longer with all the verses is best. I enjoy watching your reaction videos so much! It is so cool to see a younger generation really appreciating the music I grew up listening to!!
Linda is probably the best female singer ever, She ruled the 70's. When she sings Live she commands the attention of everyone in the building with that sultry voice.

@@gingerstrahan7464 Agreed! When you can sing country, rock, blues ballads, jazz standards, mariachi (where she shines),... and do it without looking like Grunhilda - you're the GOAT. My all-time favorite female; no caveats.
Linda Ronstadt can't be beat ... especially a live track. She is the best. She can sing anything and has. Her voice is pure. Yes Midnight Special was a late night tv show!
This song was the first song by a female artist that charted on the country, pop, soul, and rock charts. By the way, Linda teamed with Dolly and EmmyLou Harris for an album of traditional country songs called Trio in 1986/87. You could listen to just about all of song, but To Know Him Is To Love Him was the first release to radio from the album and is a good place to start.
She is part Mexican, and part German, so she sings effortlessly in Spanish. She can also speak German, English, & Spanish; she was raised with all three. 😊 She was a hero of mine; I used to try to sing along with her ‼️💜🦋 It was HARD‼️ 🤣🤣🤣
Actually, those are not Bongos. Bongos are small enough to hold in your lap and have Afro-Cuban roots. These tall drums you can play standing up are called Congas. They too have Latin roots. :)
Yes on Carly Simon and you need to see her version of “itsy-bitsy spider” live at Cape Cod concert in the 1980s it’s on UA-cam it is a great concert start to finish and she sings all the songs that made her famous within an hour and a half of time… Hope you do cover her soon she is a Legacy
Read up on her a bit. Before this video, she was in a rock band, The Stone Poneys (Different Drum was popular). She was once wife of Jerry Brown (not while he was governor of CA). She is now battling Parkinson's Disease. Sad. She had a lot of catchy songs, but I think one of the most powerful of her vocals are on the Spanish album she did around '84. POWERFUL. She also did some collaboration with other artists including one with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris... an iconic trio at the time with beautiful harmonies. Emmylou: "Linda probably has THE most stunningly beautiful voice of our generation."
Another female Friday thing to check out is "After the Gold Rush" by Trio. Trio consists of Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emilou Harris. They did several albums together. Their voices harmonize beautifully.
@@clairekane4157 Yes! Her voice is so good in that song..she sure held those notes like forever... That translates to "Songs of my Father" or something like that right?
I thought of that too, I have loved Neil Young's version since it came out, but the ladies do something special to it. Maybe listen to the original first? Or after?
Try 'Different Drum' next. One of the things I like about her is she just did what she wanted; labels couldn't contain her. She released an album of Mexican folk songs in Spanish. Her contracted record company objected, but she released it anyway. Her fame grew. She was rock, country, operetta (Pirates of Penzance), folk, Mexican folk... on and on.
One of her first "visible performances " in '67 as singer with band, The Stone Ponies. Lastly... check out CHECK OUT HER COLLABORATIONS WITH AARON NEVILLE...absolutely transcends!
Linda released several Spanish language albums. Prior to that, and even more to the initial objection of her label and management, was the album of standards "What's New" she did with Nelson Riddle. It was such a hit that she followed it up with two more. A year after the third collaboration with Nelson Riddle she released "Canciones de Mi Padre" which was a massive hit. While she may have received some push back, she had already proven by this point that her instincts and talent were right on.
I had that "standards" album. I absolutely loved it. Her styling of those songs really enriched my appreciation for the "genre" (though it encompassed more than one). AND ... I simply cannot begin to express the soul and power of her collaboration with Aaron Neville. ROB SQUAD...PLEASE SAME BOTH OF THESE!
Linda always played with great musicians and she was a great band leader. The Eagles were formed, with her help and support, from one of her touring bands.
HEY guys fun fact about Linda Ronstadt she had the ability to find a song that was not a big hit and make it a even bigger hit Betty Everett recorded this song in 1963 got nowhere Linda Ronstadt records it it became her biggest hit a number one song 1976. keep up the great work guys
I Can't Make You Love Me is probably her most well known song, but Something To Talk About and Rock Steady are good too. Give It Up Or Let Me Go is one of my favorites...
Bonnie Raitt considered one of the best female guitarists ever and is also great "blues/rock" singer. Solid and souful vocalist...doesn't feel a need for the "vocal gymnastics" that have become so much part of current music.
You should know that Glenn Frey and Don Henley of the Eagles were in her backup band. She supported them going on their own. They were worried because nobody wants to lose good players, but Ronstadt actually encouraged them!
Thete was a "click" of singers and songwriters that did some great work together and separately in the 70s-80s. In addition to Linda and the Eagles, we had Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and Warren Zevon among others. Linda recorded a lot of Warren Zevon's songs and helped introduce him to the mainstream.
Finally. Linda is one of the best Voices ever. She is credited with creating Country/Rock. And gave her endorsement to Glen Frey and Don Henley to leave her band and start their own band, the Eagles. She even helped form them by recommending their guitar player and bass player.
Linda Ronstadt was the best selling female artist of the 1970s. You can't go wrong with ANY of her songs. For your next female Friday I strongly recommend "long long time" which I believe was her first solo hit. She was only 19.
Her duo with James Ingraham Somewhere out There and Aaron Neville Don't Know much are two great songs that showcase her and their voices. Great singing live!
The first time I heard Ronstadt was when she did this song on the Midnight Special on Dec. 21, 1973. I was absolutely blown away, and wanted in the worst way to buy the record. But *it hadn't been recorded yet!* Ronstadt recorded it the following summer, and it was finally released as a single in November 1974. It would never happen today that an artist would perform a song on national TV that was not yet available for purchase.
Thanks for that info. I didn't understand the date discrepancy (Dec.1973 TV date) because I firmly remember "You're No Good" hitting radio in early 1975 (I had just moved to SF) and then going to #1. This was Linda's first #1 and first Top 10 tune also. Her highest ranked hit prior to this on Billboard's Top 100 was "Different Drum" with The Stone Poneys which peaked at #13.
Man, I never even heard of you guys until this morning and I can't stop watching you! Y'all are so dang positive and awesome, plus seeing you guys, who clearly didn't grow up on these tunes like I did, hear these songs for the first time and actually enjoy them! Makes this rock fan happy seeing a couple new rock fans being made!
"When Will I'll be Loved" and ALSO she sang a song that I'm 90% is called "Dreams to Dream" which showcases her voice in the GREATEST ways! She's simply AWESOME!!
She is most likely one of the most successful female artists ever. in fact, the eagles, before they started their own thing, were brought together by her to be her backup band. she has a fascinating story, as she went through her career and her rise to fame. totally worth checking out.
For those of us that are old enough to remember watching “midnight special” it was the only way you could see the artist you heard on the radio. I would stay up on Saturday night just to watch it!
Don Kirchner's Rock Concert, Midnight special and to a degree, Soul Train and American Bandstand were the only way to see music on Television...If you wanted to see Real live performances it was the Fist two that you would have to catch on Friday or Saturday late night...before VCR's you either saw it or you didn't. It was the highlight of my week to be able to see all the bands I love playing live.
Don't forget Ed Sullivan. He may have been a grumpy looking old man but he really understood entertainment and booked something for everyone. He just knew who would be popular and held no prejudices as far as the type of music (unless their lyrics were overtly sexual or supportive of drugs)
Amazing singer with a HUGE catalog of songs. She was also on Broadway, has numerous Spanish records, can sing jazz standards - just an amazing singer all around with a terrific voice!
The overall musicianship of this era is unmatched in popular music. Skill, talent and practice,practice,practice....Add to that a talent like Linda Ronstadt...this was music .Midnight Special was on Saturday Night in the early Seventies. It took its name from an earlier Radio Program.

You should know that every song that Ronstadt recorded was a cover of a song that had been previously recorded by another artist. Yet Ronstadt charted again and again and again, she was that good at reinterpreting other people's music and making it her own. I'm really glad you got to her, because she freaking rocks. Oh, a little personal factoid: She used to date the Governor of California, Jerry Brown.

Don't forget that Glenn Frey co-wrote DESPERADO, and is the piano player for that song.
NOBODY can sing like the GREAT Linda Ronstadt !
Her versatility was unmatched: rock, country, operetta, Mexican. She could sing like an angel or a demon.
And sooooo hot. Every guy from that period remembers the roller skate photo.
Musical theater, standards, jazz.
You are so right
@@nzlemming I wasn’t into the short perm days. I did have that giant poster of her with the dark background, with the flower in her long hair. I think she was looking over a bare shoulder? It’s been awhile lol
The mid night Special was mostly in the 70s
One of the best singers ever. "When will I be Loved" "Tracks of My Tears" "Heatwave" "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" "Long Long Time" are some of her other great songs.
Love "When Will I Be Loved" , " Poor Poor Pitiful Me" & "Tumblin' Dice".
With everyone's suggestions I'm going to have to pull out her albums soon. I keep singing Everytime I read another title. LOL
Ahhh! Poor Poor Pitiful Me! Written for her by the late great Warren Zevon!
Amber, you would love Blue Bayou, its a whole vibe. She has a diverse discography, she even has a full album of lullabies that is amazing. The Sound of Her Voice is a great documentary about her career. Such an amazing woman.
Agree completely
I used to watch The Midnight Special all the time they had all kinds of singers from Rock and Roll to Motown
Her song "Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me" has the best opening lyrics ever.
Yes her voice. And her face is the most beautiful face I have ever seen.
Written by the late dirty genius Warren Zevon...
Love poor, poor pitiful me! 👍
I really miss the Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert so many great acts like this
I was going to mention the rock concert too.
Both were classic shows,
And when you look back,
They sure had some amazing performances too..
Totally miss them both
As others here have said "Blue Bayou" is a must hear.
Linda Ronstadt was the first female rockstar to fill arenas and headline a tour. She had famous male singers opening for her. She was AMAZING!
Linda is Master Class. You guys are the best.
Linda Ronstadt is one of my all time favorites. I think the saddest song I ever heard is her rendition of Long Long Time. I highly recommend it.
Exactly... pre MTV and music videos. We got to see the artists of the day since they weren't necessarily showcased on primetime tv.
I would like to hear "Harden My Heart" by Quarterflash. Lots of Sax, female singer and Sax player.
Want more Linda R? You'll love "When Will I Be Loved," "Love Is A Rose," "Heat Wave," "Tumbling Dice," and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me." I Love Linda!
Love is a Rose is one of my favorites!
The Eagles were basically formed through her. Glenn Frey was background vocals and guitar while Don Henley was drum and vocals for her. They started playing around and decided to go out on their own. Blue Bayou is a 2nd great song of Linda's
Unless I'm mistaken, that's Jeff "skunk" Baxter, of Steely Dan, and the Doobie Brothers, playing congas here.
They're called Eagles. Everyone who calls them "The Eagles" is wrong.
She was with a band before that called The Stone Ponyes, that's when I first heard her. She, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris harmony are so beautiful.
Love me some Linda Ronstadt! Midnight Special was a Saturday night music show, way before MTV. Great time for music!
My favorite Ronstadt song. Great suggestion!
Linda is probably the best female singer ever, She ruled the 70's. When she sings Live she commands the attention of everyone in the building with that sultry voice.
I’d put Karen Carpenter ahead of Linda, but Linda was awesome!
@@chriseasterling5506 LOL
@@chriseasterling5506 Oh Pleeze save us from Carpenter, a sour grotesque cornball who couldn't carry Ronstadt's toothbrush. Linda was/ is as superb a vocalist as ever stood in front of a microphone. Flexible, cool and mesmerizing Live.
@@chriseasterling5506 I say Karen has a good clear, pitch-perfect voice…and is boring as mud, but then I am a 60’s-70’s rocker and fan of live, real voices, warts and all. Linda Ronstadt was The Queen of it all.
Midnight Special, Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert, Saturday Night Live !! All cool shows to look forward to Friday nights!🤘
Great voice. Multiple awards in rock, contry even opera and Spanish. A true multiple genre legend.
Cuban, not Latin
Also, that's Skunk Baxter playing the congas.
Carl Simon - You’re So Vain would be another good one. Linda has such a beautiful voice and can make other people’s songs her own.
Make sure it’s the STUDIO version of You’re So Vain because Mick Jagger sings back-up vocals! 😄
They should also check out the song that she did for "The Spy Who Loved Me"
You left the "y" off of "Carly". 😁🌸 She is another excellent suggestion for Female Fridays. 🌷🌷🌷
They just did that, today.
Deanna - Linda Ronstadt was NEVER married...to anyone.
@@brucedillinger9448 Oh, right... they were just a serious item.
BONNIE RAITT- Something to Talk About. She’s another deep voice powerhouse
Absolutely... she would be an excellent candidate for female Friday
Linda is known as "The Queen of Rock." There is a documentary about her called "Linda Ronstandt: the Sound Of My Voice."
Another female Friday thing to check out is "After the Gold Rush" by Trio. Trio consists of Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emilou Harris. They did several albums together. Their voices harmonize beautifully.
Yes, absolutely. We need more Dolly Parton's in this world.
"Canciones de Mi Padre" is so good!
Or after?
The version on Letterman is really fantastic.
FUN FACT: "Different Drum" was written by the one only Mike Nesmith, later of The Monkees! So much for "they don't play their own instruments!"
Yes, and Long, Long Time
Linda released several Spanish language albums.
Bonnie Raitt is another great song interpreter, and also a great blues guitarist. Check out her 70's stuff!
Bonnie Raitt - I Can’t Make You Love Me. A must see/hear.
That is a bar bet I haven't lost yet..😂
And that's a bar bet I have NEVER lost
Blue Bayou is sublime
Her duo with James Ingraham Somewhere out There and Aaron Neville Don't Know much are two great songs that showcase her and their voices. Great singing live!
MELISSA ETHERIDGE! She's a must for Female Friday.

“Someone to lay down beside me” live in Atlanta is fantastic.
Massive star back in the day.
I love everything she ever sang.
She did a duet with Aaron Neville called “I Don’t Know Much”.
It’s soooo beautiful.
THE 70s were so FANTASTIC Heres some proof ..
“When Will I Be Loved” and her cover of Little Feat’s “Roll Um Easy” are both stellar.
"Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" and then follow with Warren Zevon's version of it. He wrote it. But she sold it.
Love her voice so much! "Blue Bayou" next please! One of my favorite songs.
Yay! Finally! Requested this about a month ago! I love Linda Ronstadt! She’s my musical idol! ❤️🎶❤️
Linda Ronstadt’s version of You’re No Good is the best!

Really a part of cultural history from the Seventies. Her story is phenomenal.
Thank you Amber!!!!!
For those of us that are old enough to remember watching “midnight special” it was the only way you could see the artist you heard on the radio. I would stay up on Saturday night just to watch it!
Yes -we looked forward to it all week!
Years ago, maybe 6, they put out a DVD box set of the show. Takes me right back.
Midnight special was on late fri night....
Agree.
You guys don’t realize how big these people were and are. These are musical legends. Linda has done albums of standards, Mexican songs, and various genres. She is one of a kind.

Just a little research on their part before listening to an artist of Linda's calibre would go a long way and prevent me from yelling "It's LINDA RONSTADT for God's sake!! Of COURSE it's incredible!!" Lol!

Midnight Special was on late Saturday night and had 2-3 live acts and usually a comedian, all live with a studio audience. Never missed it! Thanks for doing this great memory👍
The guy on the bongos is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter from the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. He also was a consultant to the Department of Defense when they were working on the Star Wars Initiative.
The two backup singers were legendary in the 60s and 70s: Sherlie Mae Matthews on the left and Clydie King on the right. Clydie sang backup/alongside with Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, etc.
Clydie was also Bob's girlfriend too.
"Long Long Time" and "Heart Like A Wheel" are great songs. She also does a great cover of the Eagles song "Desperado".
I can't listen to Long, Long Time without crying... but that's ok, its worth It. In fact, your life will be better for It

Linda Rondstadt is the most successful female artist of the 70s. Her song “Down So Low” is the epitome of broken hearted angst.
You should know that every song that Ronstadt recorded was a cover of a song that had been previously recorded by another artist. Yet Ronstadt charted again and again and again, she was that good at reinterpreting other people's music and making it her own. I'm really glad you got to her, because she freaking rocks. The Midnight Special came on TV on Friday nights after the Tonight Show (so about 1AM). It was an hour and a half of current music stars performing.
