The song that first put Linda on the charts was “Beat of a Different Drum” when she was with The Stone Ponies” band. Written by Mike Nesmith who ended up one of the Monkees. Check it out. BTW, those of us that remember know that Linda Ronstadt taught Daisy Duke everything she knows about cut-off blue Jean shorts!
Yes! The Stone Ponies! Requiescat in pace to Mike Nesmith (12-30-1942 : 12-10-2021)-- Like VH said on "Diver Down" -- "Where Have All The Good Times Gone"?!?
She was with the Stone Pony's early in her career, and did a song called" Dance to the beat of a different drum"(written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees). Definitely worth a reaction.
If you search the dictionary for the word awesome, you'll see Linda Ronstadt's beautiful, smiling face. I have followed her since the 70's and one thing is crystal clear; she nails every single genre she attempts. She has given the world her heart and soul, and will continue to be listened to by future generations...You can bank that!
Linda is perhaps the greatest voice we've ever heard. She's on a shelf with Karen Carpenter, Pat Benetar and maybe Dolly Parton. But because of her range from country to rock to pop to even classical Mexican music is off the charts, she's kind of on a shelf of her own. I went to the same High School here in Tucson that Linda went to, altho 20 years later. She was still all they talked about. I think you can see why. She is an amazingly beautiful woman in every respect. Inside and out. There will never be another like her.
I love that you put Karen Carpenter in the same league with her. Not many people make that comparison - but I think they're the two best female voices I've even heard...
Yes, Linda can do just about anything. She famously did several albums of standards (famous songs from the '40s and '50s) Try "What's New." Also she does a beautiful duet with Aaron Neville called "Don't Know Much.". There are a lot of beautiful duets that you should react to.
I love her duet with Bette Midler on the old Rosemary Clooney song “Sisters”! So much fun. Also, her duet with Paul Simon “Under African Skies” from the Graceland album.
@@lynettewithers728 "Don't Know Much" is beautiful, but "Please Remember Me" ( ua-cam.com/video/4H-wZQv-qUo/v-deo.html ) is in my top 5 most beautiful performances of all time.
Unlike today, she didn't need autotune. What a great voice for real. You mentioned you liked the Steel Guitar sound, that brought you back to country music. If you would like to hear a steel guitar in a more rock genre try The Pretenders ...back on the chain gang, middle of the road etc....even good for female friday with Chrissy Hynde (apologies if I didn't spell that right)
For some modern country with a throwback sound, check out Junior Brown. He built what he calls the 'guit-steel' which is a double necked electric guitar and steel guitar in the same body. He plays both masterfully and has a unique voice as well. I suggest "Broke Down South of Dallas" - live at Austin City Limits.
Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock. She has had so many hits such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc. Ronstadt also did two great duets, "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) & "Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville). The Eagles were her backing band till they went out on their own & she has covered a lot of their songs.
Linda Ronstadt is a vocal artist without peer in her generation. It's her voice that attracts me, but her artistry touches me even more. Thanks so much Jay and Amber, you're the best!
Roy Orbison wrote and sang the song, but nobody ever sang it as well as Linda does in this version. Linda Ronstadt is still my absolute favorite female singer. Her voice is so beautiful, so subtle, that she can bring tears... She could sing ANYTHING. She could have sung a grocery list and it would have been a hit!
Keep in mind that this was a live performance with no auto-tune or post production, and she still sounds fantastic. Now that is true talent. There is a video that I think you can find on UA-cam where she sang this song with the muppet musicians on Sesame Street. Not only was the song beautiful, but there were muppet frogs croaking in time with the tune that also made it hilarious. Go find it if you can.
@@penelopehornswaggle102 Unfortunately, how true. She retired in 2011 with a condition known as progressive supranuclear palsy, which keeps her from singing. However, she has a list of awards that would take me five minutes to list, including 11 Grammy awards, 3 American Music Awards, 2 Academy of Country Music awards, an Emmy award, and an ALMA award. She has sold over 100 million records, making her one of the highest selling recording artists in the world.
...and don't forget New Wave! "How Do I Make You" written by Billy Steinberg, who also wrote "Eternal Flame" (Bangles), "Like a Virgin" (Madonna), "I'll Stand By You"(Pretenders), and "True Colors" (Cyndi Lauper). ua-cam.com/video/ymQh763IcoA/v-deo.html
love the reaction -- the dreamy look on their faces shows they are really feeling it. This song was written and originally recorded by Roy Orbison, but Linda Ronstadt definitely made it her own. I love the description of her as a "Swiss Army Knife" -- she really was that versatile. She could sing in nearly every musical style and still delivered exactly what the songs required. Simply amazing. And it's so sad that her health issues have taken away her voice. But these recordings are forever.
The gift and skill of a real singer is not technique alone at a loud volume to show off, but to intelligently interpret the song in congruence with the meaning of the lyrics and the mood, with superb musical phrasing, breath support, and interpretation. Instead of turning the song into another operatic sh*t show for showing off vocal skills. Here, Ronstadt holds back [as did Roy Orbison originally] for dramatic effect on the verses, and on the Chorus, expressing and bursting out emotional joy at "returning someday to her home at Blue Bayou." this provides perfect contrast and variety in the song, instead screaming all the way through it. Aside from her powerful talented vocal skills, Linda Ronstadt was an intelligent master at this as evidenced in her later work in big band, mariachi and light opera, as well as ballads. if you are a power singer, use your skills wisely about the song first and the singer second. Check out her documentary The Sound of My Voice, available on youtube, and get the full story.
You could do an entire female Friday of just Linda. From her cover of Poor Poor Pitiful Me, to The Dark End of the Street, to Silver Threads and Golden Needles.
Linda could sing random encyclopedia entries or phonebook listings and I'd listen... She's nothing less than phenomenal.... so amazing that we probably need to invent new adjectives so any description of her voice does her justice...
Linda Ronstadt's voice is just so amazing and beautiful! You should react to her and Aaron Neville singing I Don't No Much. Their voices blend together beautifully.🎶🎶 You'll absolutely love it!!❤
Oh how I love Linda Ronstadt!!!! I am so fortunate to have been attending the University of AZ Tucson when she was with the Stone Pony. I went on to teach at the elementary school where her nephews attended. She would often be at the assembles that her nephews participated in. We all loved her. Always quietly attending no hoopla. A phenomenal singer. I have all her albums. I have her album “Canciones de mi Padre” framed. She use to sing at a small club on the corner of Grant and Tucson Blvd. This was before her big hits!!!! I have now seen your reaction to Laura Nyro, Linda Ronstadt, and Tina Turner! I’m over the moon.
The guitar on his lap is called a steel guitar and the sound is amazing. This is a great live version, but the studio recording is so much more pure and refined. You owe it to yourselves to hear the studio version too. Love you two! thanks for being so fun.
Have you heard 1950's style Linda or Opera Linda yet? She is awesome. A true voice, no autotune no studio mix. Sorry, but truly better than most top rated voices today.
Linda Rodstadt is one of the few singers whose talent is in Donna Summer's league. Both her and Donna were singers who could sing any style of music. Rock.Dance Country, Gospel, jazz. reggae, soul show tunes. It don't matter. They saw all music as wonderful and a tool to get feelings expressed. They don't make em like those two anymore!
I am supprised that no one has told you that the guitar on the knees is a "Steel Guitar". Yes, it was very popular in the older Country Music era. Thanks much for your diving into the older stuff, I am enjoying it thoroughly.
Linda Ronstadt's voice was one of a kind with tremendous range, clarity, and power. There's an excellent documentary called "Linda Ronstadt: The Sound Of My Voice" that is an entertaining journey of her life in music. As a child, her earliest songs were Mariachi and Gilbert & Sullivan light operas. In fact, there's a video of "Poor Wandering One" that demonstrates Linda's incredible range and vocal control.
Look at her. Jeans and a cute little top, with a heavenly voice. Unlike some of the flashy female vocalists these days, all she needed was a great voice.
"Different Drum" was her first song I ever heard. I remember exactly where I was when I first heard it. I was 10 years old and thought her voice was just amazing.
She had the greatest back up band ever...literally. How many artists could say that there back up band was one of the quality of The Eagles in their early days before their own super stardom? None.
I was fortunate enough to see Linda Ronstadt on this tour. She was absolutely incredible. One of the greatest in my opinion. That instrument you liked so well is a steel guitar.
In 2019, they determined Linda actually has Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), which is worse than Parkinson’s. PSP is a lesser known neurodegenerative brain disease, for which there is no cure & no effective treatment or management. Early symptoms are so similar, it’s often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s & in early stages, it even falls into a group of diseases referred to as “Atypical Parkinsonism”, but it’s a distinctly different disease which progresses faster, causes more severe & differing symptoms, responds poorly to medication & has a significantly reduced life expectancy. So very, very sad.
For more variety, listen to her duet with James Ingram Somewhere Out There. Gorgeous. I've Got a Crush on You from the big band era is great. She also sang the part of Mabel in the light opera Pirates of Penzance. In other words, NO, there is no genre she can't sing.
She also has a beautiful duet with James Ingram "Somewhere Out There" from movie, American Tail. This one and the duet with Aaron Neville, "Don't Know Much" are samples of her adult contemporary love ballads.
This was written by Roy Orbison and was an international hit in 1963. It beacame Linda Ronstadts signature song when she covered it in 1977 as a top 5 hit. The lyrics are as though they were written for her voice.... very powerful.
Her duet with Aaron Neville. "Don't Know Much" is amazing. Aaron is an amazing singer. Love Linda's song. Can't help but feel sad she can no longer sing due to Parkinson's Disease.
Love, love, love Linda Ronstadt - all of the different genres she sings... yes - what can she not do. My favorite album of hers was Lush Life - an album of torch songs she did with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. So pretty. If she's singing, the song can't miss. Besides... her band became the Eagles. You'd have to love her just for that, even if she couldn't sing!
I saw her in 1968 at a dance at Idaho State University. She was with the Stone Poney's. We were sitting on the floor, listening. She had a mini dress on and was barefoot. She looked at us and said " you know this is a dance right?" We just nodded and kept watching her. She was beautiful. I saw her again in concert with Brewer and Shipley around 1973 at Idaho State again. She is unbelievable. So sorry for her health problems now.
She made it sound SO easy...her singing style. The emotion she puts into all her music takes you along with her on her musical journey. She was and still is an outstanding voice. Beautiful lady, beautiful voice. So many wonderful songs, so many memories from back in the day.
I've been a fan of Linda's ever since I heard "Long Long Time" on the radio. There is nothing she cannot sing. Not only did she sing pop and rock, she sang country, opera, operetta, ranchera, and ballads and she sang them all fabulously. I recommend reading her autobiography. This woman was born to sing and what a gift she had. That instrument you love that has that country sound is the slide guitar.
One of my all-time favorite albums is her album "For Sentimental Reasons". She sang American standards (like what your Crooners sang!) with an orchestra, and it's fantastic. Listen to "My Funny Valentine", or "But Not for Me".
please watch "Linda Rondstadt, the sound of my voice" I think it is on Netflix. It is incredible. She could sing anything and it shows the influences and history. It is so good!
This is another one, like “Funk #49” yesterday where I see the song and think....FINALLY! It’s impossible to not like Linda Ronstadt singing this song. Might try watching her sing “Silver Threads and Golden Needles” with the Eagles next.
Always loved Linda. Such an immaculate voice. She has Parkinson's disease and can't sing anymore. No one could belt them out like her. Poor Poor Pitiful Me is another great tune by her, if you guys haven't done it yet. You can hear more country twang in her voice on that one.
She is a really petite (like 5’2) lady with such a powerful voice 🥰 Her Latino roots is from her paternal grandmother, who was Mexican. And from living in Tucson
That pedal steel sound IS the defining sound of traditional country music… my Dad played one, and our family loves it! It’s been used in rock and jazz music because it brings a very unique that can’t be gotten any other way 🎶

She is the Best selling female artist of the second half of the 70s. In the early80s I saw heron Broadway in the Pirates of Penzance. Great song choice- made my evening.
I've been with my husband since 1977 and he has NEVER looked at another woman, BUT he told me way back then that if she would ever have him, he would be gone. I always believed him and could never blame him for feeling that way! She sings with a pure voice. During the 70's and 80's we went to dozens of her concerts and were never disappointed. If she was playing another night before moving on my husband would always go back for another look and listen. The man knows what he likes!!
Ok, I'll be smiling for the rest of the night. You couldn't have given me a better gift for Tet. Thank you! Linda Ronstadt (Ronda Lindstat as my wife calls her) is the one woman my wife jokingly says I would break my marriage vows for. The greatest voice I have ever heard (Art Garfunkel on the male side). I go to a different place whenever I listen to Linda sing.
Watch again before she starts. So humble, never thought her voice was good enough, though we could never get enough. But Linda lived to sing so did anyway. So sad she can't anymore, but still adorable and cute and we still love her.

And her beauty surpasses all
One of the greatest voices ever. It's a tragedy that she can't sing any more.
Hurts my heart everyday.
So true. But, makes me thankful to have had the honor to hear that amazing voice as she released her songs.
Linda is amazing! She was SO BIG in the 70’s and what a powerful, beautiful voice! She can sing anything!
The Stone Ponies, Different Drum.
Not only technically a proficient singer but one of America's greatest voices who sang with true feeling.
You're right, you can't sound like that faking it.
She has done so many genres. Rock, Country, Folk, Latin, big band, standards, and even music theatre.
I love that song!
Yes! The Stone Ponies! Requiescat in pace to Mike Nesmith (12-30-1942 : 12-10-2021)-- Like VH said on "Diver Down" -- "Where Have All The Good Times Gone"?!?
Just "Different Drum".
One of my favorites
She was with the Stone Pony's early in her career, and did a song called" Dance to the beat of a different drum"(written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees). Definitely worth a reaction.
I like that one also!
Actual title was “Different Drum” for easier searching.
The “cry” in her voice I think is what you’re looking for. She was soooooo good. Saw her in concert and she was absolutely perfect.
Linda is great in whatever she does. Right up there with Roy Orbison who wrote and cut the original
And she can almost sing it as high as Roy, and that's no knock on Linda.
Absolutely love her duet with Aaron Neville "Don't Know Much (But I Know I Love You)".
I love The Neville Brothers
Yes!
Linda Singing “Long Long Time” from her early years is amazing.
That song makes my heart break every time I hear it... I can feel it throughout my entire body and soul...
This one's FANTASTIC.
And, I Never Will Marry
I love it when you do a song from a concert. No auto tuning there! Linda has a brilliant voice.
Not many people make that comparison - but I think they're the two best female voices I've even heard...
and Olivia Newton John
Heres proof 70s Country music was NOT TO SHABBY LOL,, RELESED IN 1977
Yes, Linda can do just about anything.
Linda and Aaron were magic together!
@@rcinsley Love them both
@@lynettewithers728 "Don't Know Much" is beautiful, but "Please Remember Me" ( ua-cam.com/video/4H-wZQv-qUo/v-deo.html ) is in my top 5 most beautiful performances of all time.
"Blue Bayou" is a Roy Orbison classic, but I think Ronstadt's version is the best.
Tough call for me...they're both great, but uniquely different.
Her version is beautiful but Roy's voice always brings me to the verge of tears.
The Black and White Night version of Blue Bayou by Roy and the gang is an absolute treasure, hard to choose between it and Linda's version
Sorry as much as I love Linda's voice, Roy's voice is effortless and haunting. Roy's version for me.
funny thing in a video I saw she said she really didn't like her version that well
Linda Ronstadt killed this.....she's amazing!!!!🎶🎼🎵💜🥁🎸🎹🎧🎤🎙
And she sang this LIVE!!!! TRUE TALENT!
Linda Ronstadt has a powerful voice, filled with emotion. She can do it all. She takes you on an emotional journey everytime.
She can sing very soulful too!
ua-cam.com/video/FsZHRkV-R3Q/v-deo.html
Check this one out!!
Don't forget her 3 albums with Nelson Riddle, singing songs from the 40's - they are fantastic!
"Desperado"..."Long Long Time"..."Somewhere Out There"..
all 3 are unbelievably gorgeous. Hope you add them to your list.
💙☮💙
Don’t forget down so low.
This is a fine song by Linda, and she can really belt it out. "Long, Long Time" is the first song I remember hearing from her, and it is SO well sung.
Yes... Long, Long Time is such a wonderful song!
I believe she was on The Muppet Show not Sesame Street.
Here it is -- ua-cam.com/video/XBmIKfm5iz4/v-deo.html
I absolutely loved her performances with the muppets. She was a favorite on those shows. The one with the frogs is hilarious 🌺✌️
She can't sing anymore.
Yeah - Linda has done folk, rock, American Classics with a big band, country, pop, mariachi, and even light opera on Broadway ("Pirates of Penzance").
...and don't forget New Wave!
Her last album, ADIEU FALSE HEART, a dip into cajun style, with the help of Ann Savoy. A couple of songs are sung in French.
love the reaction -- the dreamy look on their faces shows they are really feeling it.
They really are adorable. I love em, can't stop watching them, and their enthusiasm is wonderful in this day n age.
Beautiful
When she gets to the chorus I get goosebumps. Such a wonderful talent. So sad the state she’s in today with progressive supranuclear palsy
Yep goosebumps
Please react to Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville's duet "Don't know much".
There is nothing like the sound of a steel guitar
When Will I Be Loved??
Linda always always put the music ahead of showing off her voice.
LOL, operatic sh*t show - oh how I tire of them
You could do an entire female Friday of just Linda. From her cover of Poor Poor Pitiful Me, to The Dark End of the Street, to Silver Threads and Golden Needles.
Her performance in the "Pirates of Penzance" musical film is priceless.
I saw her in that show on Broadway...she was amazing :))
Yes, the last thing I expected and wonderful!
Linda could sing random encyclopedia entries or phonebook listings and I'd listen... She's nothing less than phenomenal.... so amazing that we probably need to invent new adjectives so any description of her voice does her justice...
Great choice... my favorite song by her... my second favorite would be the duet between her and James Ingram "Somewhere Out There".
Linda Ronstadt's voice is just so amazing and beautiful! You should react to her and Aaron Neville singing I Don't No Much. Their voices blend together beautifully.🎶🎶 You'll absolutely love it!!❤
Yes!
Don't Know Much is definitely worth a listen!
Oh how I love Linda Ronstadt!!!!
I am so fortunate to have been attending the University of AZ
Tucson when she was with the Stone Pony.
I went on to teach at the elementary school where her nephews attended. She would often be at the assembles that her nephews participated in. We all loved her. Always quietly attending no hoopla. A phenomenal singer. I have all her albums. I have her album
“Canciones de mi Padre” framed.
One of the best ever female vocalists.... simple as that. Glad to have grown up in the same era as when she was making her mark in music.
You should hear her rendition of "Hurts So Bad" because it's amazing.
I am supprised that no one has told you that the guitar on the knees is a "Steel Guitar". Yes, it was very popular in the older Country Music era. Thanks much for your diving into the older stuff, I am enjoying it thoroughly.
Linda Ronstandt is one of my untouchable artists…her voice just can’t be outdone. LOVE ❤️
There is no one else, to me, who could ever sing this song so beautifully. Thanks to whoever requested it.
And I would’ve agreed with you until I heard Alisan Porter sing it for her audition on The Voice and got a 4-chair turn.
I saw that documentary. It was excellent.
She also sings operetta, where she further developed her head tone. She gained some fame doing "Pirates of Penzance" on stage.
With Kevin Kline, who won a Tony for his role.
That was when she was still with The Stone Poneys. Great stuff!
Written by the late great Michael Nesmith.
Hit up Linda’s version of “Hurt So Bad”. She was the voice of the ‘70s.
Best cover ever!
They did that video already.
@@Mwoods2272 Are thinking of “You’re No Good” because “Hurt So Bad” doesn’t come up in search results.
@@joemc1960 My apologies, you are right, it was You’re No Good.
She has such a beautiful tone to her voice. There was nothing she couldn’t sing. Such a talent.
She had the greatest back up band ever...literally. How many artists could say that there back up band was one of the quality of The Eagles in their early days before their own super stardom? None.
A voice that can bring tears to my eyes.
I was fortunate enough to see Linda Ronstadt on this tour. She was absolutely incredible. One of the greatest in my opinion. That instrument you liked so well is a steel guitar.
Loved Linda's voice! My favorite song of her's has always been "DESPERADO"! I hate that she's not able to sing anymore! 😪 Parkinson's Disease SUCKS!
I'm 66, I Walk a few times a week for an hour, and sometimes I walk by her house, but I've never seen her outside. Thanks!
Linda ronstadt did Pirates of Penzance, playing Mabel.
Her voice is perfect, but hearing her throw down opera, its magic.
I love that song! Brings back some great memories for me❤
Love, love, love Linda Ronstadt - all of the different genres she sings... yes - what can she not do.
It’s free on UA-cam. Yes, please watch it. You’ll be glad you did!
One of her first songs after she left the Stone Poneys is still one of my favorite, "Long, Long, Time". It is simply beautiful.
"Oh, there it is!" ; took the words right out of my mouth. Thank you!
Linda has the voice of an angel. It’s hard to even believe.
This is another one, like “Funk #49” yesterday where I see the song and think....FINALLY! It’s impossible to not like Linda Ronstadt singing this song. Might try watching her sing “Silver Threads and Golden Needles” with the Eagles next.
Her duet with Aaron Neville called "Don't Know Much" is amazing!
You will absolutely love this
Always loved Linda. Such an immaculate voice. She has Parkinson's disease and can't sing anymore. No one could belt them out like her. Poor Poor Pitiful Me is another great tune by her, if you guys haven't done it yet. You can hear more country twang in her voice on that one.
She is a really petite (like 5’2) lady with such a powerful voice 🥰
Her Latino roots is from her paternal grandmother, who was Mexican. And from living in Tucson
That pedal steel sound IS the defining sound of traditional country music… my Dad played one, and our family loves it! It’s been used in rock and jazz music because it brings a very unique that can’t be gotten any other way 🎶
Is that what is also called a steel guitar 🎸? I've listened and watched other rock ( country rock) videos and I like it as well.
You must check out the film documentary: Linda Ronstadt:The Sound of My Voice. Linda is single handily responsible for the creation of the group The Eagles.
Linda is one of my favorite female singers of ALL times. She is part of my college soundtrack. Saw her perform at Rutgers when I was there.
