- Video game adaptations are always tricky, for some reason. But holy sh*t did they nail this one! Or, at least the first episode was absolutely amazing. We got all the feels, AGAIN - can't wait to continue this journey, even though a lot of it is familiar to us. What did you all think about the premiere?

What a perfect 1st episode. The way they stayed extremely faithful to the game while also giving us scenes that deepen the story and make it much more meaningful was great. Every actor absolutely blew me away with how they embodied these characters, especially Pedro and Gabriel as Joel and Tommy. It’s insane to how much Gabriel Luna sounds like Jeffery Pierce. Amazing casting all around. If every episode is as good as this one, this might be the best video adaptation I’ve ever seen. Still can’t believe that episode 1 was an hour and a half. Felt like 10 mins went by. I could’ve watched the whole season right then and there lol. I’m very excited to see the rest of this season and all of y’all’s reactions.
Couldn't agree more! I am glad it's a weekly release, though. Prolongs the experience, and makes it more of a communal thing. Definitely prefer that to the "entire season in on go" binging thing Netflix does.
@@KatSonny Completely agree. Weekly releases really give you time to digest and process each episode which I love. I just can’t help but to want more cause I love the world of TLOU so much. A blessing and a curse lol.
I just wasn't feeling the acting, especially from the chick that plays Ellie. It seemed forced from her. I hope it picks up, as it's the most faithful video game adaptation we've ever gotten.

Really loving the adaptation so far! And kudos to the actress Nico Parker on her portrayal of Sarah... and she looks so much like her mom, Thandiwe Newton.
Oh damn, she's Thandiwe Newton's daughter?! I had no idea, but definitely see the resemblance. And yes, she absolutely killed it as Sarah! (No pun intended, lol)

Very eerie how much more topical the opening is, talking about a potential pandemic, than when the game itself even came out. I love the way the fungus protrudes from the infected people's mouths in this. I'm glad you two enjoyed it so much, I'm looking forward to reactions to the rest of the show!

I fucking hate they took Anna Torv for Tess. Because she is so great... And I already know what awaits for her. And I felt sad already in the game for Tess... So this will suck. Hard.

I play the games several times but I captivated by the story anyway, it's a big win if you impress people who already know everything about a story LOL I cried at the same point, love Elli and Joel but what they adding are also very good.
Absolutely. They nailed it, and all the feels came back and hit just as hard as they did the first time 👍
I love how they showed that Joel is not a good guy. He's not a hero he's not someone who is going to do the right thing. He's going to do what is necessary to survive and take care of his own. Also when Joel caved in that soldiers head in with his fists was perfect. The show stayed true to the game and showed Joel's dark side when he gets enraged and becomes a monster.
The soldier who shoots is played by Craig Mazin himself, apparently. Which, as a writer, is exactly the poignant metaphor a cameo like that should be, in my opinion.
It is wild how perfectly they threaded the needle. I have played TLOU like 4 times, I know the story, but they managed to keep me riveted and the performances were so perfect. Different but the same. I am stoked that Merle got to reprise the role on screen.
Troy baker and ashley jonson the Joel and Ellie from the game are also in the series i saw them in the trailer i google it and indeed they are part of the cast

The best adaptation of a video game ever made and we are still in the first episode, can’t imagine how good and brutal this will get if this is the start! Btw that info about the fungus in the start of the episode is true this a real fungus that infects zombified ants

Great reaction to a great first episode! It was so gut wrenching that I had to take a couple of pause breaks. Amazing how one came to love Sarah and the father/daughter pairing in just a short bit of screen time. Pedro nails it again. Amazing cast overall. Glad to see Kat, rocking the pink!
I had no idea that "Sarah" was Thandie Newton's daughter! But now that I see it the resemblance is uncanny. Great first episode, great casting and so far the best video game to small screen adaption I think I've ever seen.

Both are really interesting to listen to.
The reason they brought up the cookies (and cake) so much likely was because that is how the fungus initially got inside people - contaminated ingredients, like flour etc.
I read an article mentioning a few big historical events (fungal infections) from contaminated produce that happened back in the days, so it's also a nod to that.
In the games it's not originating from Jakarta but somewhere in South America, and it's flour, I think.

Loved the reaction. This episode really hit hard with Sarah and the boy with the sneakers. It all was really well done. On a side note, as a fellow female, I find that pink is a great color that really brings out the tone in Kat's skin. Both the color and style looks great!
1st off *god we missed you Kat* welcome back! Now, the very opening for this series was completely different from the original game yet it was so freaking perfect! It described how dangerous fungi and Cordyceps specifically EVEN BETTER a than the game! And even the entire Outbreak Day flashback was somehow even done better. My heart was pounding the moment Sarah woke up. I’ve played the game 7 times already and thought I could prepare myself for Sarah’s death, but nope, I was almost as broken as Joel.
As for Ellie, Bella Ramsay was as perfectly cast as Ellie as The rest of the cast was. And in the behind the scenes feature for this episode the creator Neil Druckman said that Ellie was almost happy watching Joel protect her because she has never had a parental figure in her life. God this show is going to be AMAZING!

I feel like I always say this… But a new video from you really makes my day.
I like a lot of the changes they did with the show. For example, the spores are not in this and they went with the original concept art before the spores called “the tendrils”. Realistically all the spores would be in the air so everyone would be dead, not just in some zones and anyway when they get out of the zones with the spores when they have their mask on in the games they would still have spores in the hair and clothes, it would be impossible so I love it this way more because it’s more realistic and TLOU is very grounded and realistic, so it makes more sense like this and also the tendrils makes the infected EVEN MORE creepy and show how all of them are connected so I love it.
And how the infection works. In the game it takes like two days to turn, in here like they showed in the scene with the little boy in the sign if you get bitten in the leg being the farthest part to the brain it takes a lot of hours or a day so it makes more sense, then torso, shoulders and hands, it takes some hours and then head it takes minutes and that makes it even more scarier, I love it.
Like even smaller change like the guy that shot Sarah saying “I’m sorry” is an improvement. It’s shows he is just following orders and didn’t wanted to do it. Amazing.
I love all the new scenes we got, everything is perfect, all the cast is perfect and the scene after Joel, Ellie and Tess gets caught I love how Joel had PTSD, it made the scene more emotional and I liked it better in the show.

I always assumed the spores itself has a short lifespan outside it's hosts body so after a certain time the fungi just dies, so the spores covering their hair is not infectious anymore kinda like with how some parasite just dies when it's outside of the host's body.
I just hope the way of infection they replaced the spores through the respiratory system with will be interesting.
@@hittkid6312 I trust them, every change so far has been good in my opinion so I ain’t scared. Neil is involved in here too and like I said, the tendrils was the initial plan before the spores so we’ll see. 🤞🏽

The first scene where John Hanna sets up the entire show is one of the best and most terrifying scenes in tv history imo.
That was an amazing episode. As someone who has lived in Boston for the last 20 years, seeing post zombie appocolypse Boston was unerving. When I first heard they were making this into a tv show I watched like 30 min of a youtube video of game play. I never played cause I didnt have the right console. I had to stop cause I didnt want ruin the show and I am glad i did. Cause as you said it matched up perfectly. What happens to Joels daughter was so gutting. You both are so sweet and love that you share your parental emotions. Dont ever lose that emotion, this is why I love your channel. Loved the Danish word of the day. I have 1899 on my list and I am going to start it soon. Cant wait to watch those reactions too.

This may be the Best Game Adaptation to date. I loved this Episode… But to answer that question at 12:44 That was probably the Airplanes Tire. Because it bounced off the Building and hit them. I’m sure if it was the Engine it would have impacted the building only…

Great reaction! I was looking forward to this show and they did not disappoint. I have never played the video game so this story is all new to me. There were definitely some tear-jerky moments 😂in this first episode when Joel's daughter died & when that random kid with the green shoelaces who was infected died I had to whip out the tissues. Well it looks like this first episode sets up Joel & Ellie for their cross country tour. I can't wait to see what kind of chaos they meet along the way...

One thing I noticed having now watched the first 3 episodes and hearing about the fungus starting with flour products, is that this episode really foreshadows it alot. First the pancakes that Joel doesn't like, then the biscuits that Joel turns down, and then the cookies being raisin (which NO ONE likes!) that Sara doesn't eat. They managed to avoid the flour products all day.

In universe it could very well be that she is mixed. Why not?

Now for the actress. She did a great job, and I understand why she got the role. I like her energy.
But then I heard the she is Thandiwe Newton's daughter. And then I ask myself why did she got the job in the first place?
Was it purely her casting, or did her connections help? "Nepo-Baby"?
That's the second raised eyebrow.
And when you take the two things together, race changing and casting someone with connections due to their parents, that is quite a red flag.
@@Quotenwagnerianer There are multiple examples of black characters (and characters from Asia, Africa, Oceania, etc.) being portrayed as white characters, by white actors. There's a Wikipedia article about Whitewashing in film and I learnt a few stories in it yesterday. Also, we need to consider all those times when white people costumed themselves to imitate a race: black faces, red faces, fake asian, etc.

The first time I played through the prologue I remember thinking that was the moment games finally hit the same level of cinematic and emotional grip that we see in the best dramas. The ending of MGS3 is a close second, but The Last of Us achieving that effect from the get go was very impressive to me and something I hadn't seen before in games.

Hey you two!! Glad to be joining you guys for this one. I'll admit, I'm not a gamer, but I do know some of the plot - still, discovering it anew is an amazing experience, and what a gutwrenching one... The cast is spot-on - Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are a god-tier combination, and on a lesser note, glad to see Gabriel Luna getting some work as Tommy, he was amazing as Ghost Rider in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!
Noticed in the discussion that you hadn't seen Arcane... I know your kid is taking a lot of your time, and that your schedule is pretty packed, but if you'll allow a suggestion.... When you can slot it in, do consider reacting to it. For me, this was the show that not only broke the video game adaptation curse, but shattered it. It is one of the best pieces of media I have ever come across, and I think you two are 100% the target audience.

There's a reason they rolled the prequel time with Sarah to 2003 instead of 2013. It put the "current" time in line with the release time of the movie, while the game was meant to be "in the future"
I knew Sarah's fate going in, I tried not to get attached. But Nico was amazing. I couldn't help but adore her character, which of course meant the inescapable outcome would still be painful.
The lead up to Sarah's departure could have been an entire episode unto its self. And to a degree it felt like it was its own self-contained show.
I don't have an appropriate console to play it, but I followed a very entertaining streamer (who edited out nothing other than when they had to pause to deal with the cat or the doorbell etc. which they trimmed to as the left camera to coming back on camera, and left the countless fails in the final recorded replays) entire playthrough of LOU and LOU pt2 and the media in between, and another streamer (who edited a lot more) through the original TLOU. So I do know much of the story.
Oooh. Pink looks good on this lady! That crescent moon too... I might sub just for the fashion and I don't even have any myself.

Really good watch and an excellent reaction from the both of you, as always! The accuracy to the game in this episode was really something. Of course, they'll have to change stuff as the episodes go on but the fact that they paid so much care and attention to that first episode gives me a bit of hope this series will be amazing, like reviewers said.
