Pedro Pascal and Nico Parker did a phenomenal acting and it was tragic the way Joel's daughter died and I literally cried when that happened.

Pedro's 'accent': while he was born in Chile, his family came to the US when he was very young. He was raised in Texas and California. He's not performing an accent, that's that's just his.
I was surprised to hear his American accent after watching GoT, along with actors like Peter Dinklage and Jason Mamoa.

It's that bassy panic you don't hear often.
This show did things that outdid the powerful-ness of the game.
Joel's "Tommy help me!!!" is definitely one of them along with the shriek Ellie gives in episode 5 when Henry shoots himself. Her scream just made it feel that much more real and made the moment hurt so much more
The game made me tear up. The show made me tear up. Bravo to them
What I liked so far from the first episode is the camera work and Sarah getting more screen time than the first game. And we’re gonna be seeing Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, the original actors who played Joel and Ellie, later on in the series as different characters, as well as Jeffrey Pierce, who originally portrayed Tommy as a different character.
@Zirath Ashe Same here. We never got to see Ellie’s late mother in the first game. But I’m glad that the show’s creators will use that opportunity to explore the backstory with Ellie and her late mother.

Imagine not knowing the story and seeing this happen. They made it seem as if she was the main character. Ned Stark times 10.
Not really Ned Stark times 10 IMO. We only had what, 15-30 minutes to get attached to this character instead of a whole season. Although her being a kid definitely makes it hit harder than it would otherwise.
I’ve never played the game but knowing Bella Ramsey is the lead, I figured something was going to end up happening to Sarah. But it still hit pretty hard, the actors did a wonderful job

The opening scene is creepy because what he's spitting is facts.
The tension in the room had me tense.

They aren’t facts. They are theories and pretty outlandish ones at that. The idea that climate change will just propel such a fungus through millions of years of evolution is about as plausible as the “science” used to explain Jurassic Park or X-Men, maybe less.

What's horrifying is that the fungus actually exists in real life. Yes, it only affects ants. But, what if?

I absolutely love that cold opening with the interview in 1968 to explain cordyceps. Fun Fact: that year was the same year governments started to acknowledge climate change, as well as the same year George A. Romeros The Night Of The Living Dead was released.
You didn't forget the plane moment, because it never happened in the game. The car just before that is actually what crashes into the side of their car, but here they did a fake out instead and added the plane crash.
Some of the small things I loved (since I mean there's lots of big things too):
-Tommy's actor NAILED how Tommy sounds and even young Tommy looks. (younger tommy looks a lot different than post apocalypse Tommy actually)
-Pedro Pascal as Joel nailed a fun thing. As soon as he gets up he grabs coffee, Sarah hands him Orange Juice, he takes a small sip, then washes it down with his coffee...something Joel would totally do
-They didn't try to do a 1 for 1 recreation of the game, which honestly, is probably for the best. They covered major events, and even lines from the game, but expanded upon other things that aren't covered at all like Joel smuggling in drugs for people and him doing dirty work to get by
-PTSD is shown in an authentic and realistic way by Pedro Pascal :(
-And! They got the original actor who played Marlene in the game to reprise her role in the show. She's the only returning cast member to reprise her actual video game role. (although will say Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker are both in the series as more like..smaller parts I hear)
Yap same.. i started crying pre " the scene" because i knew it was coming, the full out bawling. I think that for people who have palyed the first ( and second game for that matter) are -SO- connected to the characters already that it hurts extra much.
The scene with Sarah kicks even now at this reaction. I cried before and now again. Luckily, they did it as well as in the game.
10:35 I cried too, although I saw the scene in the game x times and knew what was going on.
My conclusion after this episode: I've never been so captivated by the start of a series based on a story I know inside and out.

i would wait to play the game until after the show is done. i played it and i know whats coming so that takes away from a new experience a little. its still good and theres a little new story information they added which adds stuff the game was missing.

Your initial idea about 'original actors' was correct, since they performed the scenes with performance capture suits. So, they weren't 'just' voice actors.
I've always loved The Last Of Us' use of fungi as the zombie agent because yeah, like the intro said, it already exists in the insect world. It's not a big stretch to think, "what if it just evolved to affect humans too?"
It’s a HUGE strech if you understand genetics and microbiology at all. It simply is less likely than us developing super powerful genetic mutations all the sudden and becoming X-Men.

I swear knowing what happens, from the game, made Sarah's scene so much more intense. The anticipation was so emotional. Cried my eyes out.

Fan Fact: Some of those clothes they wear are almost exactly like from the game. But Ellie's shirt was also the same shirt Nathan Drake wore in the flashback of Uncharted 3.

Loved this from the first scene.. then Pedro and Nico were amazing.. but when Bella arrived it lifted it to another level… perfect adaptation.. and looking like the TV show of 2023.
What's interesting is it's implied the fungus is spread though wheat. Joel was doing Atkins.

Most of this show was filmed in my hometown. It was so cool driving past some of the sets the past couple of years. Definitely excited to see this show.
I've actually never played the games, but I'm watching the show with my uncle, who's played both and is a huge fan. I'm also aware of certain tidbits of trivia, like Marlene being played by the same actress as the game.
Glad to see I wasn’t the only one digging and jamming to the use of that classic Depeche Mode track, it might not happen, but I’m crossing my fingers for a Kate Bush style chart resurgence.
Btw the fungus that was described in the beginning is a real fungus that affects insects mainly ants, so theoretically if it did Mutate to a point where humans could get it, then “The Last Of Us” is probably what the world would look like

It’s definitely the best live action video game adaptation. I would say Arcane and the Castlevania show on Netflix are the best animation adaptations for video games.

I'm loving this show so far! I played The Last of Us on PS3 in 2013. I started a New Game Plus run there but couldn't finish because it was too much of an emotional rollercoaster.

I would be interested in someone never playing or seeing the game to react to this as a new show and being completely open as to what's happening and never knowing the details. Nice reaction Mary. This looks good. Glad that Riley was mentioned since she's a pivotal character to younger Ellie, hope we get to see their friendship in the next episodes, even if it's a flashback.

Hi, great reaction. Never played the game and I have no idea what happens in the story. I didnt even know it was fungus, which is a pretty cool and different concept from the usual virus...etc. I went in completely blind and after episode 1 I gotta say I LOVE this show. I mean im totally hooked. I knew it would be great cause Craig Mazin, one of the creators, the main guy for the show i think, was the creator of the hbo show Chernobyl and that show as equally incredible so I had high expectations already - but yeah wow. I was totally floored when his daughter died, I thought SHE was the girl he was supposed to be travelling with so I was really shocked actually. That's the only thing I knew, cause I saw the game poster or art or wtv at some point and it was an older guy "with his daughter" I assumed. So that was really shocking and sad. Anyway, THANK YOU for the really great reaction and looking forward to the next ones!

I struggled with one thing with this show. Not letting myself fall in love with the character of Sarah, because I didn't know really how soon, but very early, she would be little more than a memory.
I've never played the game but I have many hours of playthrough and livestream/replay exposure to the game LOU all the way beginning to end with 2 different players. LOU2 once all the way through with one player.
I had not been keeping track of when this was coming out, and hadn't followed who was in it. A few nights ago, I saw an "easter eggs" for this episode video appear on my YT feed, so I immediately closed YT, went and watched the episode, because I was expecting several reactors I routinely follow to be posting, and I needed to see the episode before those videos started getting out. I didn't realize Pedro was Joel, I didn't know Bella was in this. I recognized them both in the first seconds of seeing them. And I think they are perfect to take on these roles.
I think it's more intense here, because it's not made like it's a typical TV show, and you're not in the position of needing to watch for clues of what you need to do. In the game, you could need to spot something in a scene to be a hint of what you need to do after.

The thing about infections is that just because you amputated your hands because they touched something infected, doesn't mean you can prevent a spread because that virus has already been circulated through the blood. I mean unless maybe you literally amputate them within a couple seconds of touching an infection it would work...? But also, I thought this whole sickness was a fungal infection? In that case, I could see amputation maybe working.
The 1968 opening reminds me of the Emma Thompson opening in I am Legend in that they both foreshadow what each world is up against. Also Nico Parker played Sarah great here. Definitely takes after her mother. Anna Torv of Heavenly Sword and Fringe fame is doing pretty good as Tess.
I'm sure there will be a youtuber that will run the intro scenes side by side.

I was amazed when you knew Jakarta in Indonesia, until I saw that you were from Australia.
You didn't forget about the airplane, because that's not how they got knocked over in the game. There was a fake out in the show of that truck about hitting them because everyone was expecting it to be the same as the game, but they changed it up into the plane engine instead of being t-boned.

The show so far is doing a good job, of keeping to the story. I did see a a few minor change, but so far so good.
I've never played the game and don't really know the story but I know a certain character dies later on. But I'm mainly watching for the cast. Pedro Pascal is at his very best right now and I'm a huge fan of Anna Torv after her performances in Fringe and Mindhunter.

One of the best pilot episodes I've ever seen.
The pilot episode is one of the best pilots I've ever seen even surpassing that of the Walking Dead. The introduction gave clarity and showed the individual struggles people had to cope with. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they build the characters and how they develop the relationships and attempt to match that of the game.
Zombie TV shows and films have been done millions of times before and often lack creativity but this so far has a breath of fresh air and if like the games concentrates on human emotion and connection then I think it'll do incredibly well and I can't wait to watch the rest of the series.

Enjoyed your reaction. My comment on the series episode 1 though is it got a tad slow. The first 15 minutes were great, but the scenes in post apocalypse Boston were very dry. Maybe because I never played the game and knew nothing of the storyline, not sure, but I fell asleep watching it on HBO Max and had to go back to watch the last 10 minutes of the episode over. Hoping things pick up in episode 2...

I never played the game but heard a lot of good things about the show and a lot of reactors I like, like you have recorded just figured it was like Game of Thrones and every character was possible to be killed
This is still much more emotional than the live action adaptation, even with CG animation, you could really feel the emotion on their faces..
Tommy in the show is perfect because Pedro Pascal is Hispanic and Tommy looks super Hispanic. Also he sounds EXACTLY like Tommy from the game. They both do.

The original actors weren't just voice actors, they motion-captured the scenes so they were 100% acting.

To answer your question, I've never played this game. I don't play any games. I love Pedro Pascal. Craig Mazin co-created this show with Neil Druckmann. Craig created and wrote Chernobyl - an absolutely brilliant mini-series whcih you should watch (if you haven't already)

I probably feels that way because at the time it wasn't expected at all. Now most of us know it's coming, so it loses some of the impact. But damnit if Nico Parker didn't sell that just as well as the game version. Those sounds man, heartbreaking

Man Pedro Pascal is just an insane actor. Also a pretty good choice. Kinda impressed so far, but I hate myself for starting this series. I mean, they can't really fuck up the story if they stick to the game, but after GoT and Westworld I swore to myself to never start another series until it's finished.
