One of the few iconic animanga that change people's lives by how inspiring, realistic and authentic it is. It almost has a life of it's own. Joe Yabuki lives within all of us, right?

Yabuki Joe changed my life, ashita no joe will always remain the most important piece of media I've ever consumed, let's all burn out until nothing remains, nothing but pure white ash...
My favorite part of Ashita No Joe is that it isn't the story of The Champion. It's the story of The unranked fighter. The #100-#2 guys. It's the story of the unsung many who never achieve anything in the sport, but still fight like it was their last day.
When people talk about the extreme behavior of online fans, I remember that back in the day a funeral was held for a fictional character. Shout outs to Ashita no Joe for being that incredible
Japan's manga industry needs another Ashita no Joe. This was THE manga that kickstarted the economic boom of the 1980s. This manga released and echoed all the frustration and individuality inherent to a generation. It was THE manga that the youth of the time, who felt so disenfranchised get to their feet and give the middle finger to the old fogeys so that they could take the country and push it with or without them. Sadly, the generation raised by Ashita no Joe has fallen back on the culture that held THEM down and is keeping anything resembling Ashita no Joe for this generation and the last down with compliant, by-the-books stories like Konosuba and the horrible Isekai sub-sub-genre. There needs to be a story that rouses the youth, but instead subliminal pacifying messages in modern anime and manga exist to keep men down. Notice the facsimile of protagonists, the "literary reward matrix" in story progression. It's all there to keep them passive and adherent. It's borderline depressing. The color and individuality of Japan is now just a product without a soul, whose gears are turned by routine and the lie that your worth is tied to the society instead of what you decide for yourself. Ironically, the generation that was raised by Joe has forgotten what Joe taught them.
I don't say this lightly, but of all the anime video essayists that pop up all the time, this video was very well structured and made. Thank you for actually having something to say and inform us on. I'm wishing you the best!
I adore Ashita no Joe. It's my favorite anime of all time. I discovered it after watching Megalobox, another fantastic anime series that was a spinoff of Ashita no Joe. It's amazing in its own right and it's definitely worth watching if you like this series. Joe Yabuki is my favorite anime protagonist of all time. He feels like a real, living, breathing, feeling person, not just a character. ALL the characters feel like real people. When Rikiishi died I felt like a part of myself died. I was so invested in these characters and their lives. I wanted to see them succeed more than anything. But the worst gut punch to my heart was the fate of Carlos. Death almost seemed like a mercy in comparison to what Carlos went through. And the ending for Joe was just as tragic yet oddly satisfying. Joe went out on his own terms and it was beautifully bittersweet. This anime made me cry more than One Piece did, and that's saying a lot! I remember Joe ❤ Also, 6:44 Osomatsu Kun!! I love that show too lol
The work that created Battle Shounen, with struggles, effort and triumph, proved to be deeper than many Seinen, which is an entire demographic not a genre but which is always played against the Shounen and the Battle Shounen genre, and Ashita no Joe is deeper and more realistic and cruel than many of these Seinens Yes, these stories have a lot of fighting, as if we didn't have Battle Seinen focused on beatings and as if fighting wasn't a deep element of character development, it's through fighting that these characters develop that Joe evolves and devolves, but always moves forward even if it costs his life, that to me is more mature than regular Seinens fans can realize.
Wow! I talked to my younger cousin Hana about Tomorrow’s Joe, but she cannot watch it until she becomes a teenager. As a manga fan, I do want a spiritual successor to Tomorrow’s Joe as well. Because me and my fellow Gen Zeds aren’t happy about the overwhelming lack of powerfully good youth aimed shows this decade and before that.
I've heard so much about this manga. Especially once I started reading hajime no ippo. The only thing about this mangas legacy that saddens me is that it is slowly being forgotten
So nostalgic. Tommorrow's Joe was one of the first anime I ever watched. It aired dubbed in Mexico in the 80s along with Mazinger Z. Thanks for the vid, it really took me back.
Toei’s Mazinger Z has a Mexican Spanish re-dub with a newly current cast which has dubbed the characters in Mazinger Z infinity. It’s just loosely based on a much more ambitious manga, whose original Shueisha run has only been completed for both French and Italian markets a couple of years back.
Thank you for covering Ashita no Joe in depth. I read the translated version of the manga in the 90s and would never thought that it was written in the 60s. That's how timeless the manga is.
This video is great. I love your editing and music selection. I've only heard more about the anime and how revolutionary it was for the medium so hearing about the creation of the manga and how the story influenced Japan as a whole is amazing. It just makes me more mad that there isn't a high quality rerelease of the original anime series, only the second part and a recap movie. But after watching this, I'll try even harder to find it in high quality somewhere and start from the beginning of Joe's journey!!!

If someone who hasn't yet watched the anime comes around, I urge you to do so. It's a work of art that incapsulate Japan from those years. It's not a boxing story but the story of a kid who ends up boxing, it's packed with lessons (life, death, dreams and their cost) and - something modern mangas lack - consequences. It also offers some of the most beautiful songs in the field, seriously. The first season can be an hard watch because it has all the tropes from the old style but season two is vintage, just peak animation. Just finished watching AnJ 2 months ago. No other piece of media has really impacted as much as this show alone. Joe as a character is far from perfect, he isn't a conventional "idol" nor a "hero". Joe in the beginning of the series is a rowdy delinquent. He's untrustworthy, conventionally stupid, and extremely violent on some occasions. But as the series goes on, as misfortune after misfortune strikes Joe, he grows. He develops a real sense of morale, you end up really respecting him. His actions end up motivating you. Seeing Joe start from nothing, go to hell, and having a satisfying ending for his own character is beautiful

I enjoyed the video a lot. Lots of detailed knowledge that you present in a suspensful way. I have watched the anime but had no idea that it is this HUGE of a legacy.
Can’t really get into it ever since I got curious and did research on the manga writer. It’s a shame what happened to his daughter as well. It was really tragic. I know I’m probably missing out on something that would probably be in my top 10 seeing how much I enjoyed Megalo Box.

Ashita No Joe - Interesting title worth checking out considering its influence on Manga in general.
So this is the first "Literally Me" character 8:32

Better than Rocky Balboa. Also predating him by eight years.
Fire video, and fire story telling 🔥🔥🔥
I enjoyed the video a lot. Lots of detailed knowledge that you present in a suspensful way. I have watched the anime but had no idea that it is this HUGE of a legacy.
Excelent Video, I'm already subscribed, keep it up!
What a great video man!
Can’t really get into it ever since I got curious and did research on the manga writer. It’s a shame what happened to his daughter as well. It was really tragic. I know I’m probably missing out on something that would probably be in my top 10 seeing how much I enjoyed Megalo Box.
Actually fuck this mind set ima check it out one day.
@@hido...There is always a tommorow
@Jkhealth964 I'm already on ep 15. Actually peak. I'm kinda scared to continue since I got spoiled on Rikishi, but ima keep going.
@@Jkhealth964 yeah I did my research. I’ll prob check the episodes after 54 when I finish watching.
Good shit brother! Keep it up ❤
Thank you so much! This video was research heavy so I'm glad you enjoyed it until the end!
Awesome video! I’m a fan of Hajime No Ippo and I will definitely check this manga out. Thank you.
