Its crazy how people say Bird couldn't play in todays league but MJ and Pippen are some of the greatest defenders all time and even they're having issues with Bird.
Bird entered the NBA in his mental prime. He took a 20 something win team to 60 something win team with only him as the roster change. MJ is the GOAT but he couldn't beat prime Larry.
@@lll9416 True regarding Bird. BUT..we never got to see the late 80's Bulls and early 90's Bulls that had a squad around MJ compete against those early to mid 80's celtics. Top tier, for sure. Bird showed off his mastery of the game. Jordan was demonstrating his growing trust of teammates, but still looking to score first. Why not, given his embarrassing advantages? Triple teams be damned. Loved watching these extended highlights.
Funny how Bird was consistently putting up almost triple-double numbers in his twilight with a bad back and he is hardly ever mentioned in GOAT conversations.

bruh, LB was that dude! Only to be rivaled by Magic in their hay...those 2 were out of control! Man, they'd be 7/12, 20pts, 8 ast, 8 rebs, 2 steals, and CONTROL THE WHOLE GAME!! And could blow up anytime they wanted to! Balling in the 80s to 90s was special
Larry did whatever his team needed him to do to win, rebounds, blocks, fouls, steals, passing, scoring, you see some games only maybe 20 points, but he’d have 25 boards and 9 assists. Crazy. And how does a guy that slow get steals???
Even with his spine crushed and going through unimaginable pain, Larry was always the truth. I love seeing the Passion & Pride between Bird and Jordan.
His talent seemed limitless. The biggest the challenge the stronger he showed, even when his body wasn't healthy. That's the mark of a true prodigy and champion.
Incredible. Larry is on the end of his career, with excruciating back pain, putting up similar numbers to mj and scottie pippen in their primes. Larry STILL had his way with players, even when he was playing in slow motion compared to everyone else.
Bird 15 Rebounds Along with His Points & Assists He Was Racking Up Them Boards Yo it Goes To Show us Hustle to get after the ball Can control the tempo by possession by possession
I remember watching this when I was a kid. It was the first time I ever recorded on TV ( VHS ) because I knew how great Jordan and Bird were and I knew that Bird was injured so badly and that I might never see him again. I watched it over and over again. This video brings back so many memories. Thank you.
Its amazing to see how high level MJ and Bird were. They were practically in sync with each other the entire game. 2 of the GOATS battling for the win.
This one always reminded me a little of the Bird-Dominique duel from a few years earlier. Two all-time greats just dominating the game. It's one of my favorite games ever.
You sure you watched the same video I did? Bird shots are superior to mj. Bird demeanor for making shots look rudimentary and hold higher level of difficulty in execution as compared to Jordan. Bird had more contests as opposed mj. Bird played better defense as opposed to mj.

Wow! What a game! Jordan and Bird was just on another level than anyone else. Bird also was suffering from a bad back at this time in his career. Incredible players! Elite
Larry was shooting so smooth despite the fact of playing against the best defenders in the game at that time. Whats more scary is the fact that he wasn’t playing his best cause of his injuries 😭
I grew up a 10 minute walk from the Garden and remember partying the night before! Their was no shot Larry was going to get beat, even crippled. The 86 Celtics would have beat any Bulls team!
In a short 13 year career I can only imagine what Bird could have done in a 18 or 20 year career if he was healthy. There are no other words than to define him as "pure greatness".
Man Bird is in my top 5. He was a killer, a hard nosed winner and leader who did the dirty work and willed his teams to victory. The Bird Celtics were scary and I was a Bulls fan.
A lot of ppl like to say that the only reason he Won was bcuz he was on this Celtics team full of Legends… but was the Celtics best player, so what does that say about him? 95% of players would’ve folded being part of that roster bcuz of the pressure… Bird decided to become a Legend! 🙌
What a time to be alive. Rare to see two greats go at it like this. Both MJ and Bird playing confidently to their strengths. Both men hitting contested shot after contested shot, ice water pumping through their veins. Both teams stacked and hungry, playing hard defense until the bitter end.
When you look at the numbers and understand that Bird screwed up his back in a serious way. You begin to understand how good Bird really was. Imagine him without all that back pain.
@@jawick5150 He had his injury in 85' and he entered the league in 79'. He won his 3rd consecutive MVP in 1985-86 season, after suffering back injury in the offseason. He was entering his prime at 30, so we'll never know what healthy Larry was capable of. There might have been another gear that he never got to switch due to his injury, but we'll never know for sure.
@@jawick5150 Compared to some other NBA players (T-Mac, Grant Hill etc.), he at least had the chance to showcase his skills at the highest level (MVPs/championships etc.) and is one of the most iconic players ever. Although Magic had to stop playing due to his HIV, at that time he was fully developed player - Larry was getting better every year until his injury. Shame, cause even if he would be the same player, the injury costed him his longevity, and we didn't get to see MJ vs Bird series at the peak of their strenght.
It is not only back pain, it is surgery. He removed part from the back, the surgery did not recover fully especially Bird body which was with injuries since 1985. He would go to doctors and Chiropractors to realign and bring back to proper structure his spine before the games since then but by 1988 it was very bad. After the 1988 when he lost the whole season practically, there was no recovery since he had nerve issues and spine.
Bird and Jordan's playing style were so different. Bird's was simple and practical, yet highly effective. Nothing flashy but always got the job done and won.
Amazing! probably the last time Bird could offer a battle to MJ, since his back was basically destroyed at this point. This was also a Bulls Team that would win its first Title merely 4 months after this game. This just goes to prove how awesome Bird was!!
two of the best to ever play the game, sure loved watching the NBA then. I'm a Larry guy but it was fun to watch Jordan too. Amazing that this was Larry on his last legs and still one of the best in the game.

This is DESPITE Kobe "taking it to the basket" a lot more than Bird did for higher-percentage shots like dunks and layups. Kobe had 6 seasons as the highest misses in the league, and 3 runner up years - BIrd was never in that competition (never placed in the Top 20 for misses in a season). The only person that was even close on league-leading miss seasons was Wilt - but while Wilt led the league in misses 4 seasons in a row, he also led the league in SCORING all 4 of those seasons AND LED THE LEAGUE IN FG% 3 of those 4 seasons (he was #3 in FG% the season he scored 50.4 per game) - so no REAL competition there (to be fair, Kobe did lead the league 2 times on PPG, both included in his league-leading MISS seasons). Kobe was 18'th in FG% in his BEST accuracy season, very early in his career - and never cracked the Top 20 any other season, despite the AVERAGE NBA shooter averaging 3-5% worse from 2 point range in HIS era vs Bird's era. By Bird era standards, Kobe was a WAY below average shooter, Bird was an above average shooter.
I'm a long time Celtics fan and I was only 8 years old when this game happened. I didn't see the game. I went to school and a bulls fan that I knew told me that the Celtics beat the bulls in double OT. Finally 30 years later, I get to see the highlights of the game. Thanks for the post
I remember watching this amazing game as a kid! Absolutely lived for those Sunday national TV games! This one was easily one of the top 10 regular season games played in the 1990's! Raucous crowd, big stars and big shot-making! The NBA needs to return to playing Sunday's late-morning/ early-afternoon games in their nationally televised lineup!
@ 3:20 MJ quickly recognizes he's already too late to cover Bird, doesn't bother putting his arm up completely and starts running back knowing Larry is going to make the shot. Greatness recognizing greatness.
He knew it. Started running back before it went in. Larry is the one guy Michael just flat left alone. Had all the chances in the world to be cruel when Larry was crippled, and he still had that respect.
Top 1 player in most of the eras would say. He was the best player in this game with half a body malfunctioning , against the guy who has the most solid case for being the GOAT , so...
This was a crazy stat line for Bird. Two years away from his retirement and playing on old legs! Amazing numbers, especially the blocks assists and rebounds!
Ina era also where there was A LOT more CONTACT, LESS FOULS...guys were getting hit hard asf back then compared to the soft stuff we see in todays game.......

I thought about this exact quote when Bird missed the game winner for this game thus sending it into OT..in comparison Jordan makes a fadeaway 3 with a guy in his face (although it's waved off) later this game
To be fair, Larry had the old Boston Garden to help him out. This was a notoriously tough court, with some oddball spots in the floors and one rim much more stiff than the other. Larry thrived there, knew all the court's quirks.
Sure, and with a seriously hurt back. A normal player with a back injury could barely even play never mind shoot, but with Bird, he can still shoot better than most people in the game.

I remember actually watching this game as a kid on TV. When Jordan hit what looked like the game winner and threw up his hands is when I remembered I actually watched the game. I miss this old NBA. Was so damn fun to watch.
I’m from Boston imo Jordan is the goat but in this game Larry showed he can beat anyone, bird was hurt and old and Jordan was peaking, this was a legendary performance from the old buck that had to state who he was and don’t even forget it
Bird was the greatest of all time. If he had one 1/4 of any of the other greats athleticism it wouldn’t even be a debate. His basketball IQ is so far ahead of everyone else’s. If he played right now he wouldn’t even have to worry about back issues cause there’s no defense played. He’d average about 45-50 a game and have the whole league in mental health counseling.
@@josiahkratz5118 Well you have to also understand that they were not allowed to play zone defense like they are now and you could actually hand check people back then which made it way more difficult to actually take a shot and get open. Watch the drives to the lane and the contact that happens on every play. That is what distinguishes this generation of men playing basketball from the pussies that play it today. There's not one guy right now who could physically hold up to that style for as long as most of the greats from that time did. Even the screens being set then as compared to now are totally different. The NBA has been a joke for almost 20 years at this point because they have taken out the grind of what it takes to make it through a whole season. That used to be a skill you needed to have, to be physically tough enough to make it through. Now guys take 25 rest games a year off when they aren't even barely getting touched during the games either. You ever see MJ take a day off in the mid season against a team that was 5-29? That never happened. Cause he's not a pussy like the new wave.

Bird had 34, 15 rebounds, 8 assists, and at least 3 blocked shots. He was an absolute beast. I'm glad I got to see him play once up close in Indy back in the day. He was Lebron without the dunks.
I mean, he did the dunks as well in his earlier career days and that vision, too) but actually, LJ seems to have acquired it as well with the years his '20-'23 (+-) game is kind of remindful of Bird's style-wise
Bird was old n half crippled here, yet still brutally effective.. You are watching the two greatest players of all time right here.. The most insane offensive weapon, and the most all round player and genius of the game.
It's kind of sad how many people in the comments want to dunk on Bird for not being perfect physically. It's like saying some random 20 year old gladiator can beat Julius Caesar in a knife-fight. So what? He's still Julius Caesar.
You nailed it! They are the top 2 of all time in my eyes. I have MJ #1 and Bird #2 and I try to tell young guys all the time Bird is better than Lebron as the best SF ever. Bird and MJ have something in the mental toughness department I feel LBJ does not. They also can both play in systems, where Lebron demands to be the system and makes everyone adjust to him. So guys have to completely change their games to play with him. So he doesn't necessarily make them better.
@@rashb3994 LeBron is just a steroid cheat who has ZERO CLUTCH. Bird is the greatest clutch ever by far, Jordan would have to be second. LeBron well, you don't want him shooting anywhere further than 5 feet away for the win.

Michael was absolutely amazing. But, you could see how he was so great. Lean and athletic, with an uncanny gift to control his body in the air. Larry didn’t look like he belonged on an nba court. And he was just as clutch as magic and Michael.

@@johncox770 It's not nonsense at all if you look at the peak of their careers. At lot of analysis of the two stupidly IMO look at cumulative career stats. In that way Magic probably has the edge but if you're trying to choose the best player at their peak there is a very strong argument that Bird is the word. Look at the advance analytics. Bird led the league 4 times in VORP. Magic? Once. Box plus minus? Bird again led the league 4 times. Magic? Zero. Win shares? Bird twice. Magic? Zero. PER? Bird twice. Magic? Zero. Bird had multiple seasons where he led the league in almost every advanced analytic simultaneously. Magic hardly every led the league in even a single advanced analytic stat. So yeah I'm not sure how it's a nonsense opinion to say Bird was Better than the Magic. Almost every advanced stat backs that up.
Bird is so underrated as a passer. He was as good as Magic in terms of passing imho. He got fewer assists because they needed him to score, and just because he played forward, but he had that special court awareness all great passers have

@@bradwatson8647 He's a better court general. Jordan was terribly inefficient here forcing up shots in traffic at 33% field goal percentage. He had 9 assists but not the point, he needed to involve his team more, his drives were unsuccessful mostly.

One of the most intense battles I have ever seen. I have never seen this this game before, but it felt exciting to watch almost as if it was live broadcasted. Crazy
Grant wasn't a great defender. He was an understized 4/5 that had a knack for rebounding and was solid on offense. He played in an era dominated by D-First bigs: Hakeem, Robinson, Mutombo, Ewing. Even offensive bigs like Karl Malone, Barkley, Garnett would get nods as being better defensive bigs. Horace might have been league average but in an era dominated by elite defenders at those positions he's forgettable.
Yeah man, the old Garden was legendary for it's quirks. The floor had some spots where the ball bounced different than others and one rim was more tightly sprung than the other!
Came back to rewatch this clip. Man, I really miss this style of basketball- man to man defense, tight lanes, better effort all around throughout the game. Playing man defense takes so much more energy and stamina
It needs to be understood that Larry Bird was playing injured for several years by this point. He suffered the back injury that would end his career in the mid-80s, and STILL had multiple MVP level seasons before it finally wore him down. Michael Jordan is great, and would be a GOAT candidate no matter what, but it can’t be denied that he really benefited from timing. Put the 90s Bulls teams against a healthy Bird and Magic, along with all the other juggernauts in the 80s, and those 6 rings don’t happen.
Despite the timing theory. I do believe the Chicago Bulls would still earn at least two rings if the early 1990's Bulls played during the 1980's. The Bulls had the same hunger as the Lakers, Celtics, Sixers, and Pistons. Champions are Champions!!
Final Score of Game 2 of the 1986 Playoffs (Jordan's 63-Point Game): Celtics 135, Bulls 131 in 2 OT. This Game: Celtics 135, Bulls 132, also in 2 OT. Could not help but notice this.
Jordan is so Athletic he gets open clear shots. Bird is such an incredible shooter he doesn't need space. There has never been anyone like Bird when it comes to litterally shooting with defenders in your face.
10:00-10:04 Pippen’s post defense on bird as bird backs down is so beautiful to watch. The knees that don’t give in, the sliding feet and the pesky jabs at the ball, let alone the two subsequent blocks. It’s like playing offense on defense if you know what I mean. They really don’t play D with this kinda tenacity anymore. Kobe in his prime was really the last one.
Matter of the fact pippen had better stats than MJ and Bird in this game, scoring 35 on only 24 shots with 10/9reb assists, where as MJ and Bird whopping shot 36 shots each. Bird was clutch but I am sure there were many missed shots defended by pip and grant that they didn't show.
He was actually beat. He was playing too high on Larry’s right hip giving him the spin baseline , Bird felt that and if he hadn’t fumbled the dribble and if it wasn’t for Grants help…buckets
Larry’s jumper is so clean. Guy had excellent fundamentals and was an amazing competitor. Him and MJs relationship is so great because while they are so different, they are also kindred spirits in their mentality.
That competitive spirit just lit Bird up. Every ounce of his energy went into winning & it was as if he was in perfect physical condition. He was amazing. GOAT!
I felt like Jordan nailed that shot and the fact that he hit that is beyond me... simply the greatest of all time! Birds performance is nothing to dismiss as he always played crazy good against the bulls because he has heart and I think he was the only player that never backed down to Jordan no matter how much he came at him.
@Jay Yoyo when Jordan came back to play for the wizards, he was the first 40 year old to ever score over 40 points in a NBA game. I don’t like the comparisons between Bird and Jordan, they pretty much played in different eras but Jordan is undoubtedly the GOAT.
Its crazy how people say Bird couldn't play in todays league but MJ and Pippen are some of the greatest defenders all time and even they're having issues with Bird.
Looked like they didn't wanto defend him
Agree, it’s not like he is much different athletically to Luka. His strengths are also better suited to today’s playing style
Bird not being able to play in 2020 or 3020 is ridiculous..would be great in any era

Those are three guys who can play well in any era.
Lebron entered the league before the rule changes and still dominated grown men his rookie year and that's a fact!

The fact that Larry was running them courts like that with a pretty much destroyed back Is absolutely ridiculous. What a legend.
“Give me a minute, I’m good. Give me an hour, I’m great. Give me six months, I’m unbeatable.” -Larry "Hannibal" Bird.
Horace Grant is widely known as one of the greatest defensive power forwards in NBA history, and you see what Bird did to him.
He's making him look like ass lmao, and this is Larry Bird without a back. What an incredible player

I remember this. Back when the big three were aging and alot of us Celtics fans looked at Reggie Lewis to be that guy to fill the void of Len Bias. To be the new blood to carry the franchise foward. Sadly that to was short lived......

Yep, 15 for 36.
Better than Jordan, 12 for 36
Watching MJ vs Bird, MJ vs Magic, Bird vs Magic, everyone vs the Bad Boys, and with Marv Albert commentating. What a time to be alive. We will never see this kind of basketball again...
I was at that game and I was probably the only person in Boston Garden pulling for the Bulls that day. I grew up in Wilmington, NC but was living in MA at the time. One of my co-workers had season tickets, but he couldn't go because it was Easter Sunday and he had to spend the day with his family. I bought his two tickets. I wish I still had the ticket stubs. My ex-wife probably took them too.

Bird will always be my all-time small forward over LeBron. Could you imagine Bird in today's wide-open NBA game? My lord that man would be completely unstoppable.
They will witness the splash father

@@corkystorky amen. The splash father. Love that comment! Bird will dominate in today's league.
lebron may be a better athlete than larry but if i were to make a team and to choose between the two, i will choose bird
@Bquitin i dont really mind if u like lebron all im saying is ill choose bird over lebron anytime, ive witnessed how bird played and ive seen how lebron played. one more thing, i know people would love to watch bird more than to watch lebron. no disrespect to lebron, as ive said he is athletically superior but still ill choose bird
I gotta give mad respect to Larry Bird. That was a killer!!!!! This is coming from a Chicago Bulls fan.
If you know and love basketball you have to ACCEPT it...
I'm a Piston so we AND the Celtics MADE Mike...
Michael was absolutely amazing. But, you could see how he was so great. Lean and athletic, with an uncanny gift to control his body in the air. Larry didn’t look like he belonged on an nba court. Ever. Even as a young rookie, Larry didn’t seem to belong. His greatness was arguably more magical, precisely because you didn’t know how he was doing it. And he was just as clutch as magic and Michael.
larry was better than magic. he made some big shots back in the day
@@steviechampagnebetter but it's so close and with the fact that LB is a 50-40-90 dude , better shooter and rebounder too tho magic is the better facilitator and passer.
"our game is exactly the same" -- magic
"that's why we hate each other-- larry
People leans towards magic is greater and i know for sure that's cus he won more rings which is their no 1 factor but individually i also agree bird is better and my no 1 reason is if they're equal on ofense, bird is a level or 2 better on defense
@@steviechampagne Larry was better than Magic? That’s pure nonsense. Both were great.
He got fewer assists because they needed him to score, and just because he played forward, but he had that special court awareness all great passers have
Bird, Magic, Stockton and Zeek are ALL equal passers Magic only makes it LOOK like magic....

One of the few times Jordan was out dueled in his physical prime.
Bird out dueled him a few times, but yes I agree.
Bird is/was way more physical than MJ,he was to big and to strong, would just take Mike to the post and eat him alive with his back to the basket, and than for fun would throw rainbows over him from deep,oh yeah and talking shit to Jordan every game all game and nothing he could do about it!!!!!
@@bradwatson8647 He's a better court general. Jordan was terribly inefficient here forcing up shots in traffic at 33% field goal percentage. He had 9 assists but not the point, he needed to involve his team more, his drives were unsuccessful mostly.
Brad Watson bird couldn’t touch mj speed. He couldn’t guard him either
Jordan never got the better of Bird but Larry always got the better of Michael. Injured Bird retires opened the way for Jordan to shine. Jordan’s Bulls Always lost in playoffs to Birds Celtics
I remember watching this game even thou bird was battling injuries he was still a sensational player certain nights depending on how he was feeling...this game was one of them
One of the most intense battles I have ever seen. I have never seen this this game before, but it felt exciting to watch almost as if it was live broadcasted. Crazy
7:56 I love how Horace Grant just shakes his head in disbelief lol
Jordan’s court awareness is just incredible.
Birds was better - which is not disagreement about MJ. They BOTH had very very high court awareness.
Horace Grant was always one of the best defenders in the NBA. Bird is just killing him with almost no dribbles.
Bird was NOT prejudice... EVERYBODY got it...

Can we all just take a moment to agree on how beautiful the old Boston garden and parquet floor was?
Agree
The green was ugly... The parquet though... classic
Yeah man, the old Garden was legendary for it's quirks. The floor had some spots where the ball bounced different than others and one rim was more tightly sprung than the other!
Yup ... and no air conditioning, lol. Not a place where you want the game to go into OT.
the floors dead spots, crippled AC, and ugly decore? Yeah, great
Came back to rewatch this clip. Man, I really miss this style of basketball- man to man defense, tight lanes, better effort all around throughout the game. Playing man defense takes so much more energy and stamina
Me too😔 What a great era the 80s.and 90s.were
It needs to be understood that Larry Bird was playing injured for several years by this point.
MJ would have had a injury shortened career had he battled the 80’s Celtics, Pistons and 76’ers in their prime.
@@jjs777fzr he did for 6 yrs
Bird would kill Jordan same age.
Despite the timing theory. I do believe the Chicago Bulls would still earn at least two rings if the early 1990's Bulls played during the 1980's. The Bulls had the same hunger as the Lakers, Celtics, Sixers, and Pistons. Champions are Champions!!
@Roderick Harper 6-0 Celtics over Bulls in playoffs in the 80s. End of story.
Final Score of Game 2 of the 1986 Playoffs (Jordan's 63-Point Game): Celtics 135, Bulls 131 in 2 OT. This Game: Celtics 135, Bulls 132, also in 2 OT. Could not help but notice this.
I’m be honest bird had the best jump shot I ever seen.
I would pay whatever it took to see this game live again. Two greats playing an era that was also great slugging it out in the Garden. Fabulous
Never get tired or bored watching those 80s and 90s eras but, now I fall asleep watching NBA games.☹️
I'd rather watch a UA-cam video of a 80's or 90's game
And this was Bird on the decline with a bad back. Can you imagine if he could have stayed healthy? Bird is the GOAT
Jim Jimmy Old man, bird boy was 15 for 36. Truly world class.

@SkyH23
Bird is ABSOLUTELY TOP 5, ALL DAY EVERY DAY.
I remember that game vividly because I wanted to record it with a 3 hour tape which in the end wasn't long enough
@@TrueRoshiwhatever u claim he got beat at.. Pippen recovered and blocked him not only once. Need I say more
@@wtlcw1oo8 Yes because of Grants baseline help
@@TrueRoshi Sure. Ok buddy if that makes your day. All ima say is give credit where credit is due. I see 2 blocks from Scottie in that play.
