@@81gwarren MJ didn't have AS GOOD a handle as a rookie compared to what MJ became, in every facet of the game, not just handle. EVERYTHING about MJ improved exponentially once he became the ultimate version of himself. Ole Roy Williams said Michael was 10 times better over his 3 years with UNC and then became 10 times better than that in the NBA. MJ was an amazing rookie for sure. But 90's Jordan blew 80's Jordan off the map.

I remember my uncle told me he watched this game live with my dad, they were huge celtics fans. He told me when jordan started dropping 63 on them and they were literally switching defensive players on his to try and stop jordan my uncle said he looked over to my dad and said “I’ve seen some good basketball players but not like this guy, this guy is scary. I ain’t never seen anything like this, I’ve seen guys score 60 but not like that.” Watching this and watching others players score 60 is just different. Just the way jordan does it against the greatest team of the 80s is unmatched.

I watched it live as well. I just remember thinking he’s going to get his so they should focus on winning the game which they did in 2 OT. Jordan wouldn’t have broken the record that day had it not gone over. The loose foul call on McHale was the difference maker. The 86 Celtics still have the best roster and team I’ve ever seen play. I’d put them up against the 96 Bulls any day.

What always goes under the radar about this game is how damn good Boston was this season. They went 67-15, and 40-1 at home (an NBA record). They were the 3rd ranked offense and 1st ranked defense. This was Larry Bird at his absolute peak, Kevin Mchale at his peak, Robert Parish and Dennis Johnson still very good, Danny Ainge was among the best shooters in the league, and a rejuvenated Bill Walton came off the bench and won 6th man of the year on this team. A total of 5 HOFERS. I’d put this Boston up with the 96 Bulls and 17 Warriors for the title of best ever, the passing, balance, and defense was outrageous. Yet, Jordan made them look mediocre all night long. Shows why he’s the G.O.A.T.

I've been watching a lot of 80s and 90s basketball tonight (full games, not highlights) just trying to analyze them and there's a lot of mistakes and turnovers made that just wouldn't happen today. It has nothing to do with the smothering defenses either. Just sloppy basketball on their part. That being said, Michael Jordan is leaps and bounds above everyone on the court in these games and he would be incredible in every era. Great players would just adjust. A couple of takeaways: the ease in which he creates space to get a shot off is still incredible, star players complained about the way the refs called the games for MJ and they were right to-- a lot of the those calls were phantom fouls, Jordan is an underrated passer.

I'm actually surprised Walton didn't argue when he fouled out...that 6th foul was ridiculously ticky-tack...not taking anything away from Jordan, but this was the beginning of star players getting a lot of BS calls in games. Even guys like Reggie Miller later admitted they knew when the refs were likely to make calls and when they were likely to let plays stand no matter what happened, where it concerned the biggest stars.

Now the Celtics go to Chicago for potentially 2 games. Kevin McHale is spotted at the Chicago airport without a suitcase, as he arrives. The reporter asks "Where's your suitcase?" Many of these players simply wouldn't be athletic or long enough to play in todays game. This era had a lot of pure 3 point shooters like Steve Kerr and Danny Ainge who would just stand behind the 3 point line and shoot and not be great at much else. Jordan will forever and always be the GOAT of Goats. No one went through the same tribulations. For example, Detroit Pistons. They even had “Jordan Rules” just for him and basically beat the shit out of him. Stayed with the same team (as did Kobe) and stuck it out. Even had more in the tank if it werent for ole Jerry.

One of the amazing things about this game is that Jordan scored 63 against a very tough defensive team in the playoffs. DJ was guarding him, and he was known as a very good individual defensive player, and the celtics were knows as a great defensive team, you had Mchale and Parish. This was not a normal 63. Scoring 63 against this celtics team is out of this world insane. That's MJ for you, a beast.

They talk about today being the "cupcake era". There were so many touch fouls called in this video. I'm amazed. People talk like in the 90s, they just started swinging in each other and no fouls.

Dumb ass. How about James Harden getting 50 FT attempts per game in simple touch fouls worse than the fouls in this video? Do you even see fouls that are upward swing motion and gets free throws in this video? All of those fouls are drives to the basket. Least defense today and more offense with more simplier touch fouls.

I think MJ was pure ice 🥶 at the free throw line, too...... He was up against some excellent veterans in that series, but it started paying off in future years..... FT shooting is waaaaaay overlooked.....

It's an amazing performance, BUT... so many bullshit calls by the refs on the Celtics. Walton was doing everything he could to go up as straight as possible and they still called the foul on him every single time.
