The amount of contested shots he hit is mind blowing. He created his own shots and his Basketball IQ was on display every time he was on the court. He is on the Mount Rushmore and one of THE GREATEST TO TOUCH A BASKETBALL!!
The best teams in the NBA back around 1980 were all extremely talented, very well coached, run by top notch GM's and possessed of great point guards that could the run game like very few others. Phiiie, Boston and LA. take your pick. Any of those teams could have won the Championship in around that year depending on who got the breaks. Watching those guys play was a real treat!
Just curious who do you put 4 players on mt. rushmore dog? I got MJ, Kareem, Wilt , and Lebron. Now its real close whos next, I got Bird, Magic, Russell, Kobe.

This footage literally brought tears to my eyes... I remember growing up watching Larry Bird he was a real baller and had true passion for the game! I remember all Bird had to do was just lift that shot up and pump fake and that was all he needed to get past anyone if he wanted to. I love Larry Bird man, he is definitely in my all time top 5 of greatest NBA players ever.
In my opinion, Larry Bird was the greatest all around player to ever step on a basketball court. He rebounded like a center, he passed like a point guard, he was a beast in the low post (where his career started as Maxwell was the sf) and he shot lights out from anywhere on the front court. Oh, did I mention he was also 3 X All NBA 2nd team Defense? 24.3 pts/gm, 10 reb/gm, 6.3 ast/gm, 1.8 stls/gm and the first and two time member of the 50/40/90 club. I believe only Steve Nash is a multiple member and only 7 players have achieved that prestigious shooting line. His only Achilles heel was his health….if only…… One word describes Larry Legend----WINNER (period)
People like to say Larry wasn't athletic because he wasn't fast or couldn't jump high but watch the footage. He had great balance, body control and quick feet. Those things are also athleticism.
Yeah I don’t know why people say he wasn’t athletic. He could run up and down the court all night, had a quick first few steps, could jump high enough to dunk. All for 80+ games a year. You HAVE to be an athlete to do that. Sure he can’t hang in the air like MJ, but who could?
Larry Legend is the GOAT..! His basketball I.Q. is off the chart! In the game of basketball he was playing chess when everyone else was playing checkers! Watching him play, it seems that he was supernatural with an extra set of eyes in the back of his head. He elevated the level of play of his Celtic team mates. He and Magic saved the NBA when it was on the skids. In my humble opinion, he is the BEST of ALL Time..! Thank you Larry for all the great memories!
He would’ve been the goat had he not had back issues. Also this is after he shattered his fist, before he played in the nba he shattered his fist and lost the feel for the ball
For all the talk about how slow and unathletic he was, he had catlike reflexes to go along with his almost psychic court vision. It's sad that he was injured for most of the second half of his career, because he would have EASILY averaged over 25 PPG for his career during one of the toughest defensive eras in history.
This shows why he is in the hall of fame. His game had no weaknesses.People are always talking about his scoring , but I think he's underrated as a playmaker(if that's possible). That and his basketball smarts were I think his greatest attributes.

Bird beat 14 Hall of Famers in Playoff SERIES! Jordan was 0-6 against Bird in the Playoffs. He couldn't win a GAME, let alone a series. For all the Jordan lovers saying he played on a better team, the Celtics record improved by 32 games in Bird's rookie year (29 wins to 61 wins). The REASON the Celtics and his TEAMMATES were so good is because he MADE them BETTER!!!! I played small time college ball in the 90's in Montana, and I can tell you from experience that the bruthas play a little harder against a white guy. No disrespect at all by that comment🤙! But the freaking guy was so surprised by the pass, he missed the damn wide open layup. I was a PG that LOVED passing, so I gave him shit for a couple weeks. ALWAYS be expecting a pass.
Maybe I'm just getting old, but it always seemed so foolish to me when people would get in such heated debates about who the "G.O.A.T" is. It's unlikely you're ever going to change someone's opinion. There are so many greats/legends. Larry Bird happens to be one of them. I am not a b-ball expert by any means,, but he is the ONLY Boston athlete who I would make sure I was home to watch when they played. I think he's the greatest, but that's my opinion, with no statistical data to back it up. I LOVE BEING FROM BOSTON.
I really am saddened how many people who were not alive to see Bird play can push his career aside with ignorant comments about his lack of athleticism, can't jump, terrible defense back in the day, etc. I am amazed how he could handle the sheer physicality of the game in the 80's. Many talented players have graced the court since, but many of the things he did taught the next generations what was possible. He would have excelled in ANY era. Michael Jordan learnt many lessons from Bird that helped make him the dominant force that he was. I detest the focus on GOAT conversations when players are not given the respect they deserve. More people need to discuss who are in the conversation of the elite players. In most cases, they are talking about their FAVOURITE player.... There is a top tier, and Larry is tall on that podium.
Never hear anyone mention this but that game-winner against Portland he hit in the corner - that game was right before the All Star break and Philly and Boston were neck and neck for best record and the coach of the team with the best record would coach the All Star game. Well it came down to that game vs Portland. If the Celtics won, KC Jones would coach the All Star game. If Boston lost, Billy Cunningham would coach. And Larry made sure he coach got the honor. I remember that game (from the 1984-85 season) was shown on tape delay. CBS was showing another game nationally at the same time and their contract stipulated theirs would be the only NBA game on at that time. So Sports Channel had to delay showing the game for a few hours. We saw the game winning shot on the news before we got to watch the game.
as someone from philly who grew in the 80's I miss the days when the sixers and celtcs were neck and neck and at each other's throats. people in 2021 ca'n't understand the meaning of this rivalry
Best all-around player ever. An amazing and willing passer (which MJ wasn't). MJ has the edge because of his athletic gifts, he was an amazing defender too, Larry lacked those athletic gifts and was still a beast. Most people with his physique end up being chumps in the NBA and he's near-GOAT with those deficiencies, it's unreal.
Not near all time great ....is one of the all time greats !...full stop!!... Wont use goat any more ,, it has a satanic connotation,, such as rainman and other nicknames for satan....
the crazy thing is he was still really athletic. he has this rep of not being able to jump but larry’s got a few posters during his mvp years and could finish though contact like nothing.
Kids want to know how dominant Bird was? He was the Alpha of the NBA for a devade.. Mvp voting from his rookie year. 4rth, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd, 2nd... Read that again... Not a misprint.. Bird was straight dominant..
I concur with Magic: LB- the basketball player ever! Offense- Unstoppable! Assists! Defense! Steals! Passing! Leader! Cutch! Tough! Mr Hussle! Legend! Pat Riley- MJ last shot to win the game. LB last shot to save his life.
That 60 point game against the Hawks is legendary!!! Bird was just amazing! The Hawks players on the bench are absolutely hilarious! 😂😂😂 They just could not believe what they were seeing! That didnt usually happen in a game back then.
I was a sixer fan in the eighties and i really despised Bird.He is without question one of the best players i ever saw in my life and didnt appreciate at the time.

Excellent video, great rare footage. Thank you!
If you were lucky enough to watch Larry Legend then you already just how great he really was. He was as good as anyone I ever saw play the game.
Give me, Larry Bird, and pick any other four players and you will have a winning team
Larry legend
Bird was a cold blooded assassin! Absolutely THE best! HANDS DOWN !!! LARRY THE LEGEND!
Por lejos el mejor jugador del baloncesto de la historia!!!! COMPLETO AL 100%
The steal and DJ cutting to the hoop...amazing .
Larry legend 🐐
Larry Bird is only underrated to people who really don't know B-Ball! He was one of the all time greats and I'm a die hard Laker fan since 1975...
A lot of footage I had never seen - GREAT video!
He had great hustle.
Best shooter to ever play the game.
Can't help but see Jordan's shot modeled after this. Looks identical
Larry bird is an assassin
Look at his feet. That behind the basket shot should have counted.
80's GOAT'
Jordan is the best basketball player I've ever seen, but Bird was always my favorite player.
Give any player birds back pain and they would all be on the bench or retired
Bird is my goat
" LarryThe Legend Bird" The original Celtic It will never be another Bird Larry Bird. Him and Magic Johnson 2 Great Legends ❤️

MJ average 8 APG for a whole season. He played in a triangle system that took the ball out of his hands. Quit being a casual.
Larry was a lot better physically than people give him credit for. Before his injuries, he was quite fast and dunked plenty.
the crazy thing is he was still really athletic. he has this rep of not being able to jump but larry’s got a few posters during his mvp years and could finish though contact like nothing.
This guy... sometimes u think he just be throwing them up,,, its nylon evry time..
He was the best.
Pistons fan here, and you’re 100% right. We were kinda in the same boat for a while in the 80s.
8:40 Larry DUNKED!😮
He would kill guys in this era .. without question
Good one. Always loved him and Majic
His shooting was unparalleled. Dude was a maniac and had ice water in his veins. No matter how big the moment was. If you let the game come down to seconds, he will put the nails in your coffin lol
LARRY BIRD!! NUFF SAID!!
Great footage!
people of the future are lucky they'll never have to deal with 180p.
I find it rather odd that I just watched a movie last night from 1935.
They had 3 times the resolution than the 80's🤔
