      The Reloader Dude - And thank you for the gracious remarks...Think of all the effort being done in the area of powder coating cast bullets and all the more that has to be done before we can finally have some kind of Cast Bullet Powder Coating Manual where all the materials and processes that are most important, reliable, safe, productive and economical complete with reloading data - comes to being. We are still in the growing stages, but getting information out is still beneficial to all... Have a great day, FC

      Travis Rains - Hail to the Great Blue Grass State - Home of the Derby..and fine rye whiskey!! kinda like poetry... I've often said that if my vibe tumbler lets me down and the powder doesn't coat, I'm going to go with the Elvis Ammo 4 / 140 system. But the vibe tumbler hasn't failed me yet. I'm a-waitin' though. Take care, Kaintuck..!! Interesting though that when the Bird Yellow looked so bad, I tossed 'em back in the tumbler for a second coat and they were still warm going in - the second coat finished what the first did not. Perhaps I should do the 4 / 140 straight up as you suggest... Best to ya, FC

    When standing rifle bullets on their bases try using the plastic tray from factory pistol ammo to keep those long rifle bullets from falling over.I put the bullets in the factory ammo tray nose down with tongs,then place your baking sheet on the bullet bases, flip the baking sheet,ammo tray,and bullets over and place the whole works in the oven.Once everything is stable remove the factory ammo tray off the top of the bullets and bake.Makes beautiful rifle bullets every time.

    Hi. A good tip is to use less powder. I have good coat even with the white powder by using only 2-3 tablespoons of powder in the thumbler. It seems that less powder in the thumbler do a better coat than using a lot of powder. It working great for me. Have a great day :)

    As i live in Germany and those eastwood powders are not available here, I am using completely different powders from completely different companies.
    I find it to be very interesting that I made the same experiences with each of the powders I am using. Your grayish blue coating worked best, same with me. Your yellow wasn’t that great but a second layer will make that work. Same with me. Your white does not seem to work, mine doesn’t work too.
    The fact that they are from the same company would lead to thinking the color won’t make a difference bit the difference seems to be huge.
    I am slowly beginning to think that some colors and their pigments work very well and other ones don’t.
    May it be possible that the color is more critical to the final result than the kind of powder or the company that produces it. Don‘t want to say quality and maker of the powder do not matter.

      I am also looking for a powder coat that doesn’t look like powder coat. LFB coats well for me, but just doesn’t look right in a classic cartridge like 45 Colt- yet my SAA has large throat diameters and will lead with traditional lube- but not with power coat. I’m gonna try Eastwood’s clear, maybe combined with traditional lube.

    So the problem I am having after spending several days powder coating several thousand rounds in multi cals is the amount of bullets I can powder coat at one time. With the Elvis method I can coat about 50 at a time. Why ? Well if I do any more say 75 to 100 at a time ... they don't coat well. Less is more for me. I wish it wasn't so. But under 50 at a time and they come out real nice. Over that and they are splochy. I was wondering if you have better results using your vibratory tumbler method?

    Many thanks for your testing. Very helpful. I saw that Eastwood produce a powder gun as well. May I ask your opinion regarding why you do not attempt electrostatic coating of the bullet? For example mounting them on a pre-drilled wood base covered with a conducting medium like aluminium foil? as I told you before my wife picked out seafoam green as a color for me. I have to make her happy so she dosent get upset that I spend so much time in my reloading room. well I can't expect you to remember that I let her pick it out as you have SOOOO many followers. that is a good thing. I tried to use the Elvis Ammo preheat method. it worked really well on the first batch. for some reason the second batch was so thick that the bullets looked like melting butter. the bullet didn't deform. the powder was so thick that it completely covered the lube grooves. the Eastwood powder is so much easier to use then the harbor freight powder. I have only used the red. I'm going to try just hand tumbling the next batch and see how that works out. one pound will probably last me the rest of my life. I am very happy with their products so far. I would love to send you a few ounces so you can try it out and get your opinion. no sense in purchasing a pound just to try it out that is if you are interested in it. I always like a second and sometimes even a third. so far I trust you more then anybody on your information. experience goes a long way with me. I would love to try the pink for my wife but don't think I would buy it unless it works for me. you know the saying what works for me might not for you. like I said before I have to keep the wife happy. is there a way that I could send you some of that powder? I would understand if you don't want to give out a mailing address. and thanks again for the informative video. never stop learning... Grant

Once I get these tested, I intend to get some of the greens as well. Grant, we can surely send stuff back and forth, but when I get powder coat, I really do want a pound because if it works well, I want to use it. • @mybuickskill6979
      @mybuickskill6979 3 роки тому +1

      Its basically a bit of kit that turns the power on and off according to temperature and helps the temperature stay more consistent. It uses a thermocouple placed directly into the molten lead. Once it cools down it turns the power on omce the temp gets too high it shuts it off. And it does this many times a second as per parameters you set. Look up pid controller on amazon. Also search Johnny's reloading bench pid controller

      miller17013 - white is one of the harder colors to get good results with PC. Slam dunk is HF red and Eastwood Ford Light Blue. Eastwood mirror red is good as is any of the Eastwood blues and grays. Since you have the white, you might as well give it a try. If shooting handgun, it will do for you, but I would avoid using white in rifle barrels until you get a better coating with the white - it’s really best for electrostatic coating. Wish you started with the reds for sure satisfaction... FC Steve

    Can i use a gas check mold for PC? Which fp lee mold do you suggest to get me going? Thanks mr cookie.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 років тому +1

      Edad Martin - Thanks for your good questions - you will hear that your micro groove will not shoot cast well. But that is because of two factors - one of which you have already noted - 1) you need bigger bullets to shoot accurately - .313 - .314". 2) you need to hold your velocity down to 1700fps or less (some report being able to go faster without bullets stripping off the shallow rifling - but 1700 gives you a good margin). The Ballard cut rifling is so much better, Marlin listened to all the flak and all the latest Marlins have the cut rifling. You are also limited by needing a flat nose design best for tubular magazines. All the 30/30 cast bullet designs have a flat nose. The more rounded designs are for our bolt guns. Some report that shooting RN run through tube magazines to be safe, but that is not with hard kicking loads - and where does the line for hard kicking start? We do not want to ever experience a chain fire in our tubes to find out how bad that is. So, for the fine Lee molds, we are limited to the 309 - 150 - F and the 309 - 170 - F (F for flat point). With any luck, they will cast at .310-.311 and then we can PC them with Harbor Freight Red (thicker coat measurements after PC with HF Red ; Eastwood powders are thinner) to get your .313 - .314" If your mold drops 'em at .312, then the Eastwood powders come in. If your final PC bullets are .313 - .314" you will not need to size at all. Even if the bullets are not perfectly round, they will shoot fine. That's a good thing because they don't make bullet sizing dies at .313 or .314 anyway. Good shootin' to ya, FC

      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 років тому

      chevy6299 - That's the whole thing for sure - the electrostatic is the surest and best way to get professional results. But powder coating bullets in 1000 batches doing the electrostatic is too time consuming to do - if so, I'd just do the 45/45/10 lube system that can lube 1000 bullets requiring only 12 minutes of actual effort. We can stand doing a bit more effort to powder coat, but there is a limit to where the time spent takes away too much time. Best to ya, FC Steve

      Exactly FC plus the added cost of compressors and what goes with them. You could have a grand tied up in stuff just to powder coat a few bullets.

    I think the problem was with the basket. The mesh was too big. My small mesh size works better. I know its counter - intuitive to think a smaller mesh size would work better. After all doesn't that mean more contact with the bullet surface and thus more scraps? I think it has to do with weight distribution. The smaller mesh distributes the weight more even and thus doesn't make large marks. Well mine doesn't anyway. So I think that is the solution.

      For me, the smaller sized mesh means the black bbs are more difficult to remove. I actually need larger holes in my 1/4 inch mesh right now to get the BBs to fall through.

    Do you think Eastwood ever thought we would be doing this with their powders?

    Using way to much powder. I put 100 warm bullets in a plastic container with 1 teaspoon of gloss blue or red then shake for about 30 seconds. Dump them on a 1/4” mesh screen and cook for 20 minutes at 400°. Perfect! And no sticking. Warm - I use a heat gun. They’re to hot if you can’t hold several in your closed fist for 5 seconds.

      Jack Sprat - As time went by, we used less and less powder to do the job...but shaking also helps to keep excess powder off the bullets and prevent excess and clumping in the event that too much powder was present during the tumbling. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to ya..!! FC Steve

    Maybe the blue has TOO much powder on them so they stick together. What if you go the old shake and bake method by hand for the blue? I don't think it fair to blame your trusty basket as we have seen you countless times produce piles of nice bullets in that old basket!
    And the white bullets look like cookies and cream chocolate bars now! Haha

      Dave L - The secret to getting good PC is to have powder coverage coming out of our shake and bake, vibe tumbler, or hot bullet systems - then we want to do the vertical shaking in the basket until no more loose powder falls out - insures against getting those bad clumps. Then off to the oven they go...The longer rifle bullets may not do well in with the basket technique...the parchment paper may very well be the solution - I'm going to do some casting today - then it's to Safeways we go for some parchment paper. Have a great day, FC Steve

      FortuneCookie45LC how did the parchment paper turn out? Always fun to go to the baking aisle for your shooting needs!! Haha!!

      Dave L - The parchment paper and also the non-stick foil allows long bullets to lie on their side and not have bad marks from that after PC is done. Best to not let the bullets touch together though as that adds blemishes that we do not prefer. Long bullets do not do well in the basket. Best to ya, FC

    Fortune Cookie, you should get the triple glow powder coating and do some bullets!? That powder is crazy bright even in daylight and it glows for 5 hrs with only 10 mins of sunlight!! glonation.com
    Thanks.

      DamionChrist - Thanks for the tip, but we do have to check out the makeup of our powder coats to make sure no barrel abrasives are in there...If so, that glow in the night should be interesting... Best to ya, FC
