I think the fact that the X3 isn’t trying to look opulent and luxurious makes it more stylish than the competitors that do. I also like that the X3 still looks classic BMW unlike their newer designs. I can see this design looking good a decade from now, like second gen X5s do today.

Hi Zack and Andrea! Please continue to keep the topic of reliability/cost to own/maintain in your videos. I could see Zack rolling his eyes a bit about reliability but there are Lexus or Volvo drivers who equally don’t get the obsession with “fun” or exciting in most car reviews. I don’t need a Porsche Macan, etc. to drive 5 minutes in my tony suburb to Whole Foods, my ES 350 does just fine!
Great review guys! I have a 2018 X1 purchased in Jan 2019 and I was originally lokking at an X3 and I have to say I'm impressed with it. I haven't had a single warranty issue. I'm hoping to get an X 3 M4.0 used in Florida next or an electric version if available in 2 years. At the moment however, due to Covid, our past winter here in Montreal and our lockdowns and curfew, we haven't done anywhere near the normal mileage we usually do in a year. After over 2 years, barely 1 years worth. I'm surprised that you guys didn't talk too much about the infotainment system. In the new X3 you get the extended screen and I have to say I love the screen and the GUI screen software. It's intuitive and can be accessed by several methods; using the idrive dial, the touchscreen or the controls on the steering wheel or hand gestures. BMWs can be software customized with 3rd party software for things like full screen video and even engine output and that's something a lot of owners do. There are also so many ways to option the interiors with colors, seats, material that it makes choosing a vehicle fun to personalize. I find the choices in the Porsche too complicated to personalize with too many options and this is why I prefer BMW. Mercedes has nice interiors however I prefer the infotainment in the BMW and have to say that I believe it's way better than the Acura. I like the Audi system but I prefer the HUD and navigation system in the Bimmers. Can't wait to see what they have coming in electric. By the way the range on our X1 and fuel economy is amazing and the handling and acceleration is better than most others in the price range. BMW has lowered the prices substantially on the new X3 and X1 so Mazda, Acura and the other German brands now have to step up their game.
Our new X3 has the Cognac Vernasca Leather and is super supportive and comfortable. Premium package and parking assistance package. Great car. My wife loves it
Me and my wife are going to the 3rd lease of a BMW X3. We lease the first one in June 2015. The second in June 2018 and will be happy to continue 3 more years for a total of 9 and maybe 12,15 years down the road because this car is fantastic! We test drove other brands and we don’t want to take the risk to switch brands and then regret later. We are extremely satisfied. The car is always under warranty but we never had any issues regarding problems to fix. The oil changes are included and their service is second to none. We drive a lot on the highway back and forth Toronto-Montreal. Twice in the summer I was able to make at 110 km/h both ways (1084 kms) with a tank and over 100 kms left in that tank. That was over 43 MPG. The acceleration is amazing. It accelerates as a sport car. Adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist works phenomenally well. On sport mode, you really feel how this car is powerful. We have the 30i, more than enough power. I definitely recommend this car. I could continue here listing many other things I love about this car like parking itself just holding a button and etc etc etc.
We’re nearly the same and only separated by 1 year. Leased 3 models 2013, 2016 & 2019, no problems. Bought out the 2nd for the kids and still leasing 2019. Fantastic vehicles.
We chose the Audi Q5 over the X3 and the GLC. The GLC interior, looks pretty but it creaked! The BMW seemed plain, the Audi offered the best balance and the build quality, value and reclining rear seats sold us! Coming up on 3 years of ownership and zero issues. To Zack' point its not going to cost you $6k for maintenance over 4 years. Keep in mind that is only for an annual visit. For considerably less than $6k we bought service for 4 years and a "Platinum" bumper to package for 5 years.
Another great review. I picked up a 2020 X3M last fall and just did a 1450 mile round trip. Despite the firm suspension, the seats were very comfortable and supportive. I had no problems doing just over 600 miles the first day! Not everyone needs 473/500 HP so the X3 M40i is a great middle ground.
Nice review, Thanks. I've outgrown the need to have a luxury suv like a Bimmer. I'm very happy and convinced that I got a great car for the money with my 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature Turbo.
Nice review. Bought a 2013 X3 xdrive 35i new and traded it for a 2020 X3 M40i. No reliability issues with either car, but there is a steep depreciation curve. Love the M40i, great performance for the price.

@@youngalwyn1124 Actually, Zach & Andrea almost always film at the exact same locations. Just look at the houses they drive by, mostly the same houses!
Excellent review and might be among your best. Just to clarify, you drove a 2019 (own) model. You can tell from the instrument cluster changed from the OP system 6 to 7. No other changes anywhere else. I reviewed the same models in the suggestion and BMW offered the best driving and space. Audi & MB are best looking interior and exterior. Loved your responses to the Q & A.
I always find it strange that US UA-cam vids are always saying BMW's are unreliable. I have driven BMW's on and off in the UK for over 20 years and have never found any model to be truly unreliable. IN FACT I have had 3 nearly new Audi A4's and they were all 'fragile'. I have a nearly new X3 now and it is an epic car in every area.
In the 90s, Mercedes Benz and BWM were reported as not reliable by consumer reports. Consumers were complaining about brake dust on their wheels. CR was reporting this as a mechanical breakdown so the reliability was seriously skewed. You have to be careful with the way you define it.
Yea it’s relative even within the brand. The X1 for example is a lot more reliable than x3, which is more reliable than x5. So stick with the lower X if you want a relatively reliable x.
I have a older F25 (2015) X3 in the rare 2.0 Diesel engine. Had it for two years and just love the car. One of the best economical SUV's around. I get around 6 -7L/ 100k average. Thats mixed hwy and city.
Wife and I went to test drive this. Only deal breaker is that is the states, they only offer the sports seats with the big wings, we could not adjust or get comfortable in these and had to walk :/ our search continues…
Wow I’ve watched many review channels, this is my first time on yours, LOVE your format and coverage, start to finish. I don’t think I’ll go anywhere else from now on! Liked and subbed :)
In 2001, I purchased a new 325i. It was flawless. I regret selling it. In 2011, I purchased a new X3 with six cylinders. Two weeks after we bought it, the sun roof rails had to be replaced. Afterwards the low tire pressure lights would continuously go on. The tires were fine. One day the rear left tire was low, but the car told me it was the front right tire that was low on pressure. Then on another day, on the way to Disney World, the radiator hose started to leak fluid and the warning light came on. We got rid of the car when it hit 48,000 miles when the warranty was about to expire. Never again.
Love your videos. Based on your enthusiasm I went out and tested an X3 today. Sorry to say it seemed cheap and small. Just didn’t have a solid feel and it certainly was not luxurious. I drive a 2008 FJ with a 275HP V6 and will stick with it. The interior of my FJ is nicer and the V6 is solid. Funny thing,,, the sales guy told me that even if I got an X3, keep the FJ. Maybe the X5 will do the trick.
Perfect timing guys. Just decided today I want to buy either an X3 or a Q5 and up pops your video. I think I prefer the look of the Q5 but I think I will appreciate the driving dynamics of the X3 more but will go for the 3 litre diesel being from the uk👍
Hey guys - I just wanted to point out that I don't think that BMW started the luxury SUV craze. I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, but that the MB M-Class came out (launched Feb 1997) just a smidgen before the Lexus RX (launched Dec 1997) was first released (just months apart), and those two started the luxury SUV craze that has taken the world over. The X3 was first launched in Sept 2003, so quite a ways after MB's and Lexus' products.
@@robertduklus6555 are the two that i mentioned not compact luxury suvs? -- take a look at their original dimensions, they were tiny. read thoroughly before commenting. also, improve your attitude, you'll be happier all around if you do.
@@djcoronel No.M Class and RX are mid size, thats how they were classified at the outset. Obviously you can go back and try to re write the automotive history, but I doubt anybody will pay attention.
Yes, you are right the Mercedes SUV came out before the X5, I think 1 year before. We are actually talking about the term SAV, not SUV. BMW invented Sport Activity Vehicle. Thanks for watching! :)
A BMW dealer once sent me an official link to a BMW measurement comparison site. Believe it or not, there’s more front and rear leg room in an X1 than X3. Bigger boot/trunk on X3 but for most, the extra money for the X3 simply isn’t worth it.
@@siquanwu3131 The X1 is the same platform as my Active Tourer which is a Mini derived platform. It handles very well. And when the X1 and X3 are with X-drive then the difference is even less obvious. Still doesn’t take away from the fact the X1 cabin has better packaging in a smaller form. Unless you carry a lot of luggage the X3 is hard to justify.
@@siquanwu3131 wrong. I have an 2018 fully loaded X1 with aftermarket 19" wheels and bigger non run flat tires and the sport options including adjustable dampers, a BMS CAI and software engine mods and it handles great. They may be front wheel drive based but the AWD system is perfect. Nimble and quick.
Try the 2022 version next year! There's quite some significant changes to the kidney grille and the interior - full digital dashboard, redesigned climate control system and centre console (cloned from the 3 series).
Hi Andrea and Zach, amazing review, and the colour of the car is proper awesome! please, let me just make a tiny bit of correction here in the history of 4x4/suv , the first 4x4 suv was not the BMW. it was by Austin & Rolls Royce during the WW1 and later on the real first 4x4 SUV was made by Landrover (UK) and Jeep ( US ). Germans only joined the club first in the 1985 to 1992 and after 3 years of pause they re-designed their X-series and started to "compete" with LRJ, and Jeep.
@@lisahinson4240 The X1 is a rebranded Mini front wheel drive based car (even in AWD) while the X3 is a rear wheel drive based car (also in AWD), with its platform shared with X5 and X7, which is more like a traditionally BMW setup. Two completely different cars.
Hi Zack and Andrea! We have a 2020 X3 30i and are considering adding another one later this year. What do you think about the new Plug-in Hybrid version that is priced similarly after tax incentives?
Hi, thanks for the video. This year, 2021, i am focus on buy the new house. Next yr, jan 2022, i will go get a bmw x3 ...my coworker owned a 2005 bmw x3 and still driving it now...over 16 yrs....
A real honest review of the reliability of the German cars starts at 7:58 "Listen if that's your #1 concern "reliability" then maybe IS NOT FOR YOU, go down to Lexus and they will give YOU a nice RELIABLE CAR. NOTE: Remember these youtubers own a BMW x5 themselves and if they are telling you this then these Germans Cars are only good to show off a badge and or a Lease as I don't think people would buy them given their RELIABILITY issues. I'm highly considering the Genesis GV70, yet Lexus even though is not the most exiting car, it will continue to work way after 10 years of usage. PLEASE do a Genesis GV70 vs Lexus NX 350 comparison regarding Reliability as Lexus gets kill on both the exterior and interior design vs a Genesis GV70.
Several things about the M40i version that needs improvement. Sport exhaust should be optional. Some people want the power and refinement without the "boy racer" antics. The cold start exhaust note is ridiculously loud (starting it up in the garage will blow your ear drums out) and the "piped in" fake exhaust and exhaust "gurgles" are over the top. Additionally, the suspension could have been softened just a tad. Otherwise, the vehicle is great. Maybe they should have an M-sport version that sits between the 4 cylinder and M40i but has the inline 6 as a engine choice. Please rethink your strategy BMW.
I‘ve just ordered a new X3 30e xDrive. I live in Germany and it will be delivered with the face-lift of which NOBODY over here has any pictures, not even the dealer. Have you seen anything or even pics of how it will look like? Thanks 👍
Great review...very indepth! This was like reading the manual but more fun :) Do people even read manuals anymore though...lol. Great job on your video :)
The problem is it doesnt have any adaptive cruise control. Corolla has adaptive cruise control X3 doesn't... You kidding me right? the dealer told me when I pointed that out, Our customers prefer to drive without it. LOL
Hey Andrea & Zack. Hello from Halifax NS! Andrea, can I ask a question about your comment regarding "packages" and "a la carte" items. How do BMW deal logistically with me, the buyer wanting just certain items when I decide to buy a BMW? Does wanting "a la carte" items turn into a factory order that I probably have to wait weeks or months for my vehicle to arrive? Cheers!!
Hello! My girlfriend orders her BMW Cabriolet the way she wants it every 3 years as it is a lease. But she does have to wait for it. She's never complained about it taking forever to come. Work with your dealership and see what the time-line is.
We had to wait 12 weeks for a “custom order” BMW a few years ago. I can’t say if this is typically or not, just sharing our experience. Also, the dealerships seem like they are not as willing to negotiate on price for a custom order as they would rather sell from inventory.
I recently got delivery of an 2021 X3 and I just cannot believe the wind noises in the cabin. I have taken the vehicle back to service and being told it is caused by the wind passing over the side mirrors? I also tested a demo of another X3 on the lot and the same noice exited on another X3. I would like to understand if you observed this on your test driving. I have driven BMW for the past 25 years and get a new vehicle every 4 years and ready to move away due to this and lack of service attention.
“Go down to Lexus and get you a nice, reliable car.” I love German cars but it’s incredible that people just accept the fact that in order to have one, you need to be ok with then not being particularly dependable.
Glad the buck teeth didn't show up. Thanks for my Saturday morn cartoons, no insult folks. Nice review, pretty ride. Andrea, I hope U can drive stick, if not, Zack get bizzy.
I have had a few BMW X5-GT and X5, Now you remarked you had no issues with the rear set size and space. But nothing about how tall you are? I'm thinking a small person 5'-9, I'm 6'-2" and have big shoulders about XXL and I'm thinking you may be Small or medium, again you did not state? As for your sitting inside the X3 and did not fit. NO Headroom and you stated big I'm sorry but no way is it larger than the X5 as she stated the seat was narrow. "BINGO" But I will take another look and no way am I checkout a 4-cylinder. Overall I think you showed BMW in the best light for the model. BUT please let's be real. You stated nothing about automatic and manual shifting. any consumer reports good or bad. But I will have to check it all out for myself OH YES when they start rolling back into the dealerships. Lots are nearly empty here in Florida. and that is the same for all model vehicles. Or is it a way for dealerships to get you to order in the blind and holding onto less real estate?
When i was shopping for my car it was between BMW x3/x5 and Porsche Cayenne. Went with the Cayenne. X3 looks too much like a station wagen. I think bmw exterior designs havent been great as of late in my opinion. 🤷🏻♂️
You also probably spent nearly 2x more...LOL! I find the interiors are nice in the Porsche too but that melted butter exterior is old now. I like the character lines on the BMW better.
@@xorbitman that is fair! I bought a pre-owned so not soo bad but yeah! I do agree the Cayenne is more curvy buttery and the bmws are more fit/tight in their lines. I do really like the grill on the X3, looks like the older BMWs.
Fit and finish should be less than the X5 since this is what, 20k$ less (fully loaded v fully loaded)? The new X5 has the new interior design while this X3 is on the old design...so it's hard to compare it. As mentioned, the re-designed X3 will probably get the new integrated screen and digital dash - so that will be a much better comparison. It's just an old cycle, that's all. That being said, we know Bmw doesnt like to change much from gen to gen.
If you get the 2021 with just the convenience package you don’t get the full digital dash. You only get that with the premium package or executive package. And packages are different in Canada.
It's hard to defend BMW reliability. Buying a premium luxury ride rated 11th stinks and that's a deal breaker. Leasing does not improve reliability. German cars look fabulous but they're also overwrought with buttons.
Here’s my experience with German cars. 2014 Audi Q5 TDI 320,000 - zero problems. 2011 335i: 180,000 - zero problems. 2009 335i: 115,000 - zero problems. Presently on a 2020 Audi Q7: 60,000 - zero problems
I wanted to like the X3 but I just couldn’t feel that “sportiness” that everyone talks about. I much preferred the overall Q5 driving experience more. The other thing that I didn’t like was Digital dash in X3. The tech features are cool but it looks depressing, it’s so dark and drab! May as well come with its own joy division soundtrack on loop.
I think the fact that the X3 isn’t trying to look opulent and luxurious makes it more stylish than the competitors that do. I also like that the X3 still looks classic BMW unlike their newer designs. I can see this design looking good a decade from now, like second gen X5s do today.

Thanks for sharing! Glad the review is helpful in you making a decision.
The X3 was first launched in Sept 2003, so quite a ways after MB's and Lexus' products.
first compact luxury suv. Pay attention.
The X3 was the first small or compact SUV.
You folks are awesome. Thank you for your insights.
A BMW dealer once sent me an official link to a BMW measurement comparison site. Believe it or not, there’s more front and rear leg room in an X1 than X3. Bigger boot/trunk on X3 but for most, the extra money for the X3 simply isn’t worth it.
X1 is front WD platform, X3 is RWD, X1 drive average at the best, X3 is a good handling SUV.
Great review... as always. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
I love my X3 M40i. Hands down the best performer and best for handling amongst its peers. Quicker than the sq5 and glc43amg
As far as reliability/dependability/cost of ownership goes ... BMW's are not for the faint of heart.
Nice video review & info caption for quick reference
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it.
Try the 2022 version next year! There's quite some significant changes to the kidney grille and the interior - full digital dashboard, redesigned climate control system and centre console (cloned from the 3 series).
fact that BMW X3 needs to go M40i in order to have adaptive cruise control and lane assistance was huge meh D:
Honda at the bottom of the J.D. Power list😱😱😱
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. So glad you enjoyed the review, thanks for watching.
The scenery is so beautiful. Where are you shooting your videos?
Vancouver
Thank you, glad you like it all. We are in Vancouver and this area is called UBC.
Thank you!
Great review! Love the X3
Thank you very much!
BMW X3 used listed for sale in LA craigslist for... $1500.. yep BMW king of depreciation.
Good stuff; keep it comin'!
Thank you very much!
I'm here because my mom is probably gonna get one. I have to make sure she has something good
Great video guys! One thing tho is Q3 looks cute than X3. One missing is what gas is X3 use? 👍🏻👊🏻
Thank you very much! The X3 uses premium fuel.
@@andreaspencer9813 you are very welcome Andrea! Thanks for mentioning type of gas. 👍🏻👊🏻
@@10OF9OFBORG My pleasure! :)
I believe that BMW recommends premium fuel with octane rating 91 or greater for all its vehicles.
My FAV X3 is the X3M, because like Zack, the straight 6 engine I feel is the way to go with any BMW, except for the V8 X5M (my FAV X5, by the way).
Will you be doing a review of the new 2022 X3 soon? Thanks
Thanks a lot for review. Warm greetings from Moscow:)
Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much, glad you liked it.
Great review! Have a 2019 X1, thinking about going to the X3 next year.
I had a 2018 X1 and traded for a 2021 X3. I prefer the X1 over the X3. If you do not need the extra space the X1 drives much better. IMO,that is.
@@lisahinson4240 The X1 is a rebranded Mini front wheel drive based car (even in AWD) while the X3 is a rear wheel drive based car (also in AWD), with its platform shared with X5 and X7, which is more like a traditionally BMW setup. Two completely different cars.
Thanks for stating the obvious. I am sure no one thought the X1 and X3 are the same cars. A quick look at the sticker and it'll be even more obvious!
Hi Zack and Andrea! We have a 2020 X3 30i and are considering adding another one later this year. What do you think about the new Plug-in Hybrid version that is priced similarly after tax incentives?
Hello! We are going to be reviewing the X3 PHEV soon, stay tuned.
BMW Beastly Machines Warped
Hi, thanks for the video. This year, 2021, i am focus on buy the new house. Next yr, jan 2022, i will go get a bmw x3 ...my coworker owned a 2005 bmw x3 and still driving it now...over 16 yrs....
Best of luck!
Wow, sounds great! NEW house, NEW car, awesome.

PLEASE do a Genesis GV70 vs Lexus NX 350 comparison regarding Reliability as Lexus gets kill on both the exterior and interior design vs a Genesis GV70.
one thing is that here in America the base is still leatherette which my Mom kinda likes.
Thanks 👍
Nothing yet
Great review...very indepth! This was like reading the manual but more fun :) Do people even read manuals anymore though...lol. Great job on your video :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice review...
Thank you very much.
Hello. I'm using Bmw5 (2016). Thinking about switching to X3. How is comfort compared to 5 series?
The problem is it doesnt have any adaptive cruise control. Corolla has adaptive cruise control X3 doesn't... You kidding me right? the dealer told me when I pointed that out, Our customers prefer to drive without it. LOL
An extra 400 bucks TO GET the gloss black centre console? Did I hear that right?
Yes, but there are different packages you can purchase that come with it. There are a lot of different options.
Please do a review on an iX3 if you can. I have a 2014 X3 which I got a year ago and it is so smooth, can only imagine a new model!
@@andreaspencer9813 Ok. Thanks for the quick response!
@@ronripley9197 My pleasure!
We had to wait 12 weeks for a “custom order” BMW a few years ago. I can’t say if this is typically or not, just sharing our experience. Also, the dealerships seem like they are not as willing to negotiate on price for a custom order as they would rather sell from inventory.
Great content. I am considering between this 30i (m40i if i can win over wife) and lexus rx450h. What is your view and recommendation? Thanks
Test drove the both Q5 and the GLC. Boring. X3 blew me away, so it's now sitting in my garage.
Wonderful driving dynamics!
So you know if the leather finish is any better on the new 2022 model?
Agree that German luxury brands are for people who have a budget for perpetual monthly car payments.
Any car takes some money from you every day, even if it just stays still. The question is how much, and yes, germans take much more
I recently got delivery of an 2021 X3 and I just cannot believe the wind noises in the cabin.
You mention the Q5 in this video. Are you planning on doing a In depth Q5 review?
We get it next week, stay tuned....
Yes, it drops on Saturday this week!
The RDX is bigger than the X3? From looking at them at a distance I would have thought the opposite was true.
The new 3 series is as big as my 2013 f10 but the 3 series has more room sitting in the drivers seat
Love Andrea’s jacket. Where can I get it? Thanks. You look great Andrea!❤️
Thank you so much! That's very sweet. My jacket is from Banana Republic. :) Such great selection there.
@@andreaspencer9813 thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Lovely!!
“Go down to Lexus and get you a nice, reliable car.”
I love German cars but it’s incredible that people just accept the fact that in order to have one, you need to be ok with then not being particularly dependable.
Great review! 👍
I prefer the Porsche Macan! That would be my choice if I was in the market for a small premium SUV.
Thank you very much! Yes, the Porsche Macan is a beauty!
Glad the buck teeth didn't show up. Thanks for my Saturday morn cartoons, no insult folks. Nice review, pretty ride. Andrea, I hope U can drive stick, if not, Zack get bizzy.
No buck teeth here, not this week anyway. lol! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
Is that color the Tanzanite Blue... or the Phytonic Blue...???
Yes, it's Tanzanite Blue - Andrea
Cabin noise, sound isolation???????
Fit and finish should be less than the X5 since this is what, 20k$ less (fully loaded v fully loaded)? The new X5 has the new interior design while this X3 is on the old design...so it's hard to compare it. As mentioned, the re-designed X3 will probably get the new integrated screen and digital dash - so that will be a much better comparison. It's just an old cycle, that's all. That being said, we know Bmw doesnt like to change much from gen to gen.
This is NOT the 2021 BMW X3. It's the one from 2019 or older. The newer X3s have full digital display.
If you get the 2021 with just the convenience package you don’t get the full digital dash. You only get that with the premium package or executive package. And packages are different in Canada.
Thanks for sharing Andrea.
Thank you for watching! :)
When the I4 Review ?
It's hard to defend BMW reliability. Buying a premium luxury ride rated 11th stinks and that's a deal breaker. Leasing does not improve reliability. German cars look fabulous but they're also overwrought with buttons.
BMW Bicameral Minions Woked
Will the elves shovel my snow and start my car to warm it up for me 🤷♂️🤷♂️ I’ve been a subscriber for years and no elves yet 😂😂😂
I'll put in a request.
Nice "JAA" from Andrea. :) Some german, swedish or estonian background? :)
It`s an nice Looking car, but the Cargo space is to small for this car!
Here’s my experience with German cars. 2014 Audi Q5 TDI 320,000 - zero problems. 2011 335i: 180,000 - zero problems. 2009 335i: 115,000 - zero problems. Presently on a 2020 Audi Q7: 60,000 - zero problems
Yeah sure lol.
