How to renew faded cowl cover on Jeep JL / JT
Вставка

- UV rays from the sun cause severe deterioration and fading of the plastic body components of our Jeeps. My hood vents and fender flares still look great, but the cowl cover was terrible. So, in this video I remove the cover from Napalm and use Chemical Guys Silk Shine Protectant to bring that nasty thing back to life and "LOOK" like a mall crawler again. Chemical Guys did not sponsor this video or provide any product for this video.

Thank you so much for showing me how to remove the cowl! I have a leak on my passenger side floor and want to check out some possible leaking areas, totally love your sense of humor too!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
Clint, I just appreciate the video for working the cowl cover off. I bought a new replacement for my 6-year-old JL and just finished putting it on. Wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything with regard to the clips that held the old one on. The wipers were a PITA, but like you I had purchased a puller after reading some forum inputs. Well, actually two. The first was great and worked great on the driver's side wiper arm, but the way the cowl cover is molded around the passenger side it wouldn't work, so ended up getting one like you used. If I'd seen your video first I'd have gone that route up front. I may play around with my cowl cover and do some paint work on it. In the meantime, the new one is on and looks great again.
Good deal, bro! Personally, I'd be careful painting plastic. Not that I'm an expert, but I think I'd look at a wrap first. JMHO. The treatment in this video only lasted about 2 weeks. I'll do it again, but this time, use Meguiars Back to Black. I used it on my JK fenders with excellent results. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
I had to do the same thing to my jeep, which is a 2018 JLU Sport S. I washed it thoroughly, then used alcohol wipes. I refinished it with Krylon satin black spray paint, especially made for plastics. Turned out great. Your video helped me a great deal in the removal of the wiper arms. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
Best video out. Awesome explanation and keeping it 💯..
@@jonathanrodriguez7963 Glad you liked the vid. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
@ShockWaveOffroad just got me a gladiator so gonna be looking forward to all your videos..
Tell us how you really feel! I agree it's frustrating that some UA-camrs omit things to make themselves look super handy. I enjoyed the video.
LOL!! Yeah, man I try to keep things as real as possible. I don't sugar coat anything in my life. All that BS with some channels is why I started this one. To show the shit others won't or don't. Glad you liked the vid. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
"Great" Video! I Love your straight forward videos. Keep up the "Great" work!
Glad there are still folks who don't get offended, LOL! Thanks for watching and the comment!!👍🏻👊🏻🇺🇲🤘🏻
The plastic is breaking down under the sun because its not UV stable. Notice how the door handles are lasting longer, the hood latches.
Chemicals will cover it for a while. Best to just paint it a satin black or colour match it to the Jeep, and you'll never have to worry about it again.
I think Jeep used an inferior plastic because they intended to paint it, but didn't to save money.
Thanks for the fantastic video, great help. Thanks for the humor and straight to the point video.
Lol! Glad you liked the vid! Thanks for watching and the comment!!🤘🏻
@@ShockWaveOffroad I tried to remove the arm with a 3 arm puller with no luck, was able to get mine off with a battery terminal puller...prior to watching your video.
Dude…..you’re freakin’ hilarious!! Love your sense of humor. I too have a Punkin Orange JL. Taking off my panel today and hitting it with automotive gloss clear paint……no way I’m screwing with this ever again! Thanks for the very informative video. 💪🏻
Thanks, man! Glad you liked the vid!! Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
@@ShockWaveOffroad 😎
Well, I ended up using Satin Black engine paint. This way it looks almost like your outcome with the shine you added, but will be unharmed (or hopefully should be) by the sun, for years to come. 😁
Sorry to bomb your thread here…no harm meant. Your fix looks amazing as well!
@GEARBOX GEEK All good, dude! Actually, comments help my videos in the YT algorithm. All the likes, shares and comments go into helping the video rank, so that it's shown on more people's home page. So, glad you like the outcome. I'm real leary of painting plastic. Never had any luck with it. Hopefully, yours will be awesome for a long time. As far as the Chemical Guys stuff that I did....meh, lasted about 2 wks. Not good for taking all that shit apart. Imma do it again, but use either the Armor All or Meguiars.
Love the way you're real with this, new follower. And... we have the same color JL!
Appreciate it! Yeah, a lot of youtubers are in it for the money, notoriety and the DOZENS of women beating down our door....🙄🤣😂🤣
I'm just an old man who wants to bring good info while keeping it real where larger 'tubers might skip important details. Thanks for watching and the comment!!🤘🏻
roger that on the youbietubers saying "just give it a little wiggle"
When I changed my JLUR Aux Battery, I did the fender removal route
and that just give it a pinch and wiggle did Not work for disconnecting the turn signal harness
Yeah man, there's a LOT of that. I figure most people are on YT to figure out how to overcome an issue WITHIN a job. So, I try to cover everything I run into and how (I) went about resolving it. It might not be the RIGHT way, but if it works, I'll show it. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
Lmao your a legend. I came to this video because my 2021 Jeep is already faded as hell. I bought VPR and that’s supposed to be great for this kind of stuff. Let us know how the silk shine held up
😂🤣😂🤣😂
Bro! Thanks so much for the compliment! Sorry for the late response. But...the CG Silk Shine only lasted about 2 weeks on the cowl. It does great on tires, but not so much on plastic. Hope yours lasts longer than mine did! Thanks for watching and the comment!!🤘🏻
@@ShockWaveOffroad anytime! So I learned VPR works wonders. And you can dilute it. A buddy of mine that details says he does approx 5:1 water/VRP ratio for trim. He uses it on all plastic trim & his tires too, although 5:1 ratio was for trim, idk ab his VRP ratio for tires
Nice, wow pulling it off is really getting thorough. Guess when it’s a driveway ornament it needs to look ship shape, tip top huh🤣
Driveway ornament??? You been in John's whiskey??🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you Clint. Excellent video as usual. Definitely helpful.
You da man, Bob!🤘🏻
Hey Bob, can you email me? I have a question that I'm hopeful you could answer.

great video

Awesome video. Just what I needed to know. Semper Fi
Semper Fi!
Do you have a video or know where I can find one on how to safely remove the drivers side charging port cowl on a Wrangler 4xe?
@@MrSeshy I'm sorry, I do not. Interesting question though.
Distinction Applied in California. Order yourself a painted cowl for $160.
Nah. Don't like painted cowls or fenders for that matter. Appreciate the comment, tho. Thanks for watching! 🤘
why would you need to take it off to do that?
Good video
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
Hi, it's been over a month since you posted this. How is it holding up? Does it look faded again? Is it something you constantly have to do after every few washes?
Yeah, so it lasted about 2 weeks. It's back the way it was. If you want long lasting results, I recommend Meguiars back to black or Armor All trim restorer. Kinda disappointing that it didn't last long at all. But, we live and learn, right? Thanks for watching and the question! 🤘🏻
@@ShockWaveOffroadI found that regardless of the product anything that is a whipe on only lasts a few washes.
I know this is an old video, but what tire Carrier do you run and Does it wiggle around a bunch and make noise?
I've tried 2 different tire carriers last week in the rusty's. Which was the best so far but I really like the tube look. Thought about buying gen rite
Mine is DV8 and it's total JUNK! If you're gonna go with this type of carrier, I'd HIGHLY recommend GenRight. They didn't have theirs out for the JL when I bought mine and was too impatient to wait. Lesson learned, because now I'm screwed since I cut and drilled into the body. If you're gonna run 35's or smaller, the DV8 would "probably" be ok. But, I'm on 37's with beadlocks and it definitely sags when I open it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
Instant like when you went to youtube and watched a video, then said fck you.. haha, you're my kinda people.
I mean...🤷♂️
😎🤣😂🤣😂😂🤣😂🤣🤘🏻
@@ShockWaveOffroad Just curious, you ever tried the blow torch trick on plastic to make it dark again? I am trying to figure out what to do with my cowl. I hit it with some armor all and it didn't soak in much.
@@iisreset To be honest, no I haven't. I'm extremely leery of that. Too much heat and you burn it, ya know? In full disclosure, this CG stuff that I used in this vid only lasted about 2 weeks. I've had really good luck with the Armor All trim restorer and Meguiars Back to Black. Over the years, I've used them both on my TJ and JK. Personally, I feel like the Meguiars lasted well over a year. The Armor All lasted 6-8 months. As for just plain Armor All....I found long ago that it's NOT a good thing to use on plastic that sees a lot of sun. It actually promotes drying of the natural chemicals in the plastic which enhances the fading.
Just give it a little wiggle...... Semper Fi...
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Semper Fi, bro!🤘🏻
Why do I feel like you were looking at me when you were talking about youtubers that don't show when they ride the struggle bus?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Actually, I wasn't looking at anyone in particular. When I made that comment, I was talking about videos I'd seen years ago when I had my JK. Don't even remember who the creators were. So no, Nicky, I wasn't looking at YOU at THAT time. But, if you'd have watched the WHOLE video, you'd have caught me looking right AT you, Mark, and a few others.......😏😉😁🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cerakote works too and you dont need to pull the cowl off. Just sayin
Yeah, I'm well aware that you don't HAVE to pull the cowl off. It's just a preference for ME. Now, thanks for the cerakote suggestion. Personally, I've never tried it. FYI...The CG stuff I used in this vid only lasted about 2 weeks. Would not recommend it. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
Honestly if you're going to bother pulling off the entire Cowl cover you're better off using a high quality plastic Paint to repair the entire thing
Yeah....not a big fan of the "plastic paints". Been in this Jeep thang a LONG time. Paints (in MY experience) have done well for a couple years. But, when they deteriorate......? It's a complete SHIT SHOW. That said, depending on where YOU live, and the weather conditions, a paint may suit you better. Do what YOU feel suits YOUR needs. All in all....the CG stuff lasted about 2 weeks. Not a fan. I would recommend armor all or meguiars plastic restorer. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
In the video you said that you use it on the tires...does it sling all-over when you drive?
Semper Fi. 0341
SEMPER FUCKING FI!! 0331
Yes, I use it on the tires. I have not had "sling splatter", but I always let it sit for a while before driving. That said, this worked really well on the faded cowl cover..........for about 2 weeks. I would not recommend this for the cowl. For all the trouble it takes to do it properly, it just doesn't last long enough. Next time, I'll use the Meguiars trim restorer. Thanks for watching and the question! 🤘
👍🏻
Ordered ....
HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TEACH YOU THIS OLD MAN! USE DIRT LAYER!
I'm not growing corn in MY Jeep, bro!😂😂😂😂
@@ShockWaveOffroad really missing out on life my man
Nah bro, it's ALL good!!😎
How long does the silk shine last?? I'm guessing several weeks?...
Yeah, I was (hoping) for several weeks too. Unfortunately, it only lasted a out 2 weeks. Next time, I'll use Meguiars or Armor All. Thanks for watching and the question! 🤘🏻
I got a 2020 JT and my cowl looks like Michael Jackson 2005
LMAO!! Well, that said...I would NOT recommend the Chemical Guys stuff for this. I'd go with the Meguiars or Armor All trim restorer. The CG only lasted a couple weeks. I've used both of the others with MUCH better results. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
For more permanent results, hit it up with SEM Trim Black.
Thanks for the input. Imma try something different next time, because the CG stuff only lasted two weeks. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🤘🏻
@@ShockWaveOffroad I’m thinking about color-match painting mine. If not, the SEM Trim Black is great. Used it last year on my JK fender flares and still no fade.
Have you tried that stuff on the door handles?
No, I haven't. I wouldn't use it on plastic. It only lasted about 2 weeks on my cowl. It works GREAT on tires, but not so well on trim. I'd use Meguiars Back to Black on plastic from now on. I used it on my JK and it works awesome and lasts several months.👍🏻
Thanks for watching and the question! 🤘🏻
You’re hilarious 😭
