What is your favorite Drum Hack?
In smaller club situations I am experimenting with Moon Gel on my crashes and China cymbals. It is definitely helping with stage volume. Cool ideas on the video!
Two tuning tricks-
1. you know those weighted, cylinder material things you put under your door crack to prevent a draft from coming under the door? Put one of those in your kick drum, either against the batter or reso head, in a smile formation . It kills just enough overtone that your drum still sound fantastic-and doesn’t choke it. Plus they are stuffed with beads and generally don’t move once you place them. The dollar store tends to sell them for around $3
2. Throw a small handful of cotton balls into your floor tom. When you strike the batter head, they will raise up and land on the reso head, gently cutting off some of the overtones from the bottom. Good enough for Benny Greb-good enough for me.

Back in the 1970s when the open concert tom sound was common, I often saw twin head drums with the bottoms left open and the kick wide open at the front, the bearing edge would get all rough and dinged up, the captive nuts and bits in the lugs would rattle and buzz, and I would often pick up such drums really cheap because all the parts had then got lost by stoner musicians!
My solution-- to cut an old head out to a big hole with only 3/4 inch or so left, just enough to hold shape over bearing edges, then refit rim and bolts and tighten enough to all hold firmly together.
Result, the open single-head sound desired, no damage to drums, and no loose parts lying around and getting lost.
And a tidier-looking kit, too.
Back in 2004, I had the chance of playing a full concert tom drumkit like Phil Collins style, it sounded really awesome!!!
I had to do that with a FT that got damaged. It still sounds huge! Most wouldn't notice without looking.
I use open face shells so I can internally stack them into the back seat of my car. I use a pro dampened kick batter head so no need for pillows.
Yes, I have "found" one myself. By accident, after replacing the HD Dry Batter head on my DW Nickel over Brass 14 X 6.5 Snare and retuning it , reinstalling the Reso head and Wires, I couldn't get the drum sound like before replacing the head. A few weeks ago, I placed the DW Snare atop my 16 Inch Floor Tom, to get it out of the way while I was playing at home for some recreation. I played my other snare - a Maple 14 X 5.5 in the stand - during a fill I hit the DW snare ! Bingo - that was the sound I was seeking. Better than before replacing the batter head. Sounded like a Ludwig Supraphonic - John Bonham sound. Take it off the Tom, it was not the same. Posts of various Drumming Forums posters said that I was playing 2 drums simultaneously; one poster said Jokingly that I may have invented a new Snare stand. I tried different Batter heads: UV1 and a UV2 - still couldn't get to that same sound of the HD Dry sitting on top of the Floor Tom.

Turning a cymbal inside out may not break it if you leave it that way, but returning it to its original shape and then inside out again will break it. bending metal back and forth will eventually break it.

Metal workers call the act of putting a bend in metal "breaking". Thanks for saying this, because they don't even mention the dangers of doing this in the video.

You can also use the same method of cutting old heads to make O-Rings for the whole kit, and if they’re warped in some way you can just stack something heavy on them to flatten them out. If you don’t have a soft beater, you can wrap an old sock over the beater head. You can also tape a small towel to the batter head of a bass drum to get a really dampened tone. A very thin piece of tape placed on snare wires(only on the wires, not touching the head) can eliminate unwanted buzzing, especially if the wires are old.
Cut out bandanas into the shape of your heads, basically a less drastic towel sound and it looks awesome too!

8-bit sounding Hi-Hat.
I've got a Zildjian semi thick Hi-Hat that sounds great. Any good Hi-Hat will do. If you want an 8-bit sounding HHat, take the bottom tray of a living room halogen lamp (just the tray) and cup it over the top of the HH loosely. BOOM! you've got an acoustic 8-bit sounding Hi-Hat.

I love the tea towel method
My. bass drum came w/ a huge hole in the reso head and a piece of that sculpted foam in the bottom, When I changed all heads to Evans, I put on a reso w/ no hole at all and no damping material. Massive improvement in sound. Very punchy and no ringing. BTW: you can kill ringing on toms by making the the reso heads very loose. If you want some overtones, it takes very small amounts of tightening the lugs to get it right. Go too tight and the drum will start to ring. For the snare, the best way IMHO is to get a small bag and put some coins or washers (something metal) inside and tape it to the rim, w/ the bag resting on the batter head. When head is struck, the bag will bounce up, letting the resonance come thought, the fall back down to cut of the duration of the over tone. You have to do a bit of experimenting to get the weight correct. I got this hack from Stephen Clark at The Non-glamorous Drummer site.Much better than tape or Moongel. Keeps your the true sound of you snare. I agree w/ post below. I would never attempt to invert my expensive Zildjian cymbals.
I once accidentally turned a cymbal inside out by stepping on it. I've been using it in a stack ever since!

Use a Remo silent stroke/ mesh head as resonant heads. Otherwise lugs/collets can all rattle.
I dont recommend ever trying to play your cymbals inside out, despite what the video says, it 100% does/will damage them.
Of course you have to be careful
Chris Colemam did that in a video long a go, he is endorsed so it doesnt hurt him. If someone wants to try it its ok. weel, i Broke 2 lugs on my snare because i used the "two lugs tunning" for a long time. I learned from Carter Mc lean and another random dude from youtube.
It works but it takes more pressure on other lugs on your snare.
Only do this with already damaged or CHEAP cymbals guys. DO NOT turn expensive cymbals inside out. This is NOT a good idea. Sorry, but most of these hacks will make YOU a hack, not good.
Imo id only do that with cymbals i dont care about

That is the famous Bernard Purdie half-time shuffle you can hear on Steely Dan's "Home at Last," and "Babylon Sisters." Jeff Porcaro sped it up for "Rosanna." And John Bonham uses it on "Fool in the Rain." It's one of the funkiest, tastiest, laid back grooves around.

I find it kind of funny how everyone is wilding out about the rods and cymbals hacks. I kinda get the cymbals one I likely would never do that unless I was a sponsored drummer. However gigging musicians use the two lug method trick all the time. And lugs and
Rims are considerably cheaper than cymbals to boot. That being said you’re also not trying to completely loosen or tighten the two it’s just enough to change to the desired sound.

Forget ballads, the lower snare/kick tuning sounded great. Never been a fan of ringy snares.
I've been tried all of tuning advice and all the drum hack but my drum's so cheap so no way to make it good except of sell it and buy a new more expenisve one

Folks, please don't invert your cymbals! I dit it and it doesn't want to remain in the original state anymore. Each hit makes it invert.
And also, for the sake of you lugs, rims and shells, don't detune your drums using adjacent lugs.

These "hacks" are for people with more money than sense. There is a lot of tension on drum heads. There is a reason we tune in a star pattern. It keeps the tension evenly distributed. If you have to, have to, have to change your snare sound so much and so badly. Use two snares. Only tuning what's closest to you will cause all kinds of problems down the road. You are striking the snare the impact will not be distributed even throughout the shell resulting in more stress on some rods than others. That will cause things to loosen up, and could result in damage the shell. It can warp and become impossible to tune.
I can't even deal with the cymbal molestation. Bending them, inverting them, and stacking them are some of the quickest ways shorten their life. Maybe you don't pay for your own gear.
Retuning with 2 rods - evil. Don't spread this info among youngsters watching you, or we will be finding more and more and more public drums "tuned" down like this. I'm tired to struggle with it.
Personal favorite drum hack - using a pair of sticks to unlock a super-tight bolts instead of pliers. One that I use the most often.

People turn their cymbals inside out on purpose? I've never seen that. The only time I ever saw an inside out cymbal was when I accidentally turned my old Paiste 502 ride inside out. Don't ask me how I managed to do that.
the Fat Head trick doesn't make sense as you are showing the 'old' snare head being used, yet it looks brand new. My old snare heads are usually destroyed.....

Agree. Granted I wasn’t paying 100% attention the first time, but I had to rewind and really listen to notice the difference.
Also removing the reso heads. Yes, it reduces the sustain, and there may be some situations that call for it, but I thought that mostly went out along with the 1970s, Phil Collins notwithstanding. To each their own.
Those first two hacks are terrible things to be teaching young musicians.
step one is a great way to warp your rim and shell, and pull your top head. all of the lugs should be providing equal pressure throughout the head, because that energy is transferred into both the shell and the rim. additionally, we clear the drumhead not only for physical purposes, but also audible purposes. if the lugs are not all in tune with each other, we get clashing of pitches and distortion. Its pretty obvious you did NOT do the "hack" you yourself gave, as it probably gave you a really muddy sound in the mics. cuz its a bad hack.
Also, inverting the cymbal DOES damage the cymbal. you are blatantly lying. You absolutely can invert your cymbals, its a good way to get a trashy sound and get a cool stack, but it WILL DAMAGE YOUR CYMBALS. you flat out lied.
This is a damaging video, and you should actually edit the first two "hacks" out. Kids learning to drum don't need to be breaking their equipment because some dude with studio EQing said its okay. get real dude.
