I mean it's basically a gaming pc so it's expected to have to go through windows. I was thinking about buying my son the steamdeck for minecraft and roblox but I found out yesterday that roblox anti cheat system blocks all Linux users.
On my 2nd one. First one started shorting out controller and led started shorting on and artifacts in games right before it stopped working all in the first 24h of owned. Best buy swapped in out zero issues truly is amazing for a hand held.
I just picked the rog ally, still working on getting things working right and getting used to it, so far it isn't bad, I do like how seemless the stea, deck is, minus the few tweaks here and there, but all in all so far what I'd expect from a windows operating system
Regarding the stand, I saw it in videos while waiting for my Ally to arrive and thought "hell no". Luckily, someone had already designed a nice 3D printable stand for it, so I had that ready by the time my Ally arrived.
ROG ally. Absolutely jank to get set up and get going, however once it is set up the thing is a monster. Its played everything well that ive thrown at it so far.
Lies, it's no harder to setup than a gaming PC 😂. Updates don't bother me at all and that's the biggest complaint I hear, is all the updates for the first time. Its hilarious watching people complain that it takes a little time to fully setup. Lazy mfers no excuse its pure laziness, build a gaming PC yourself then get back to me.
@JD-773 yeah i have a fully built gaming PC. Doesn't change the fact that PC stuff acts junky at times. Nothing to do with laziness it is what it is. The Steam deck while I don't like it as much is much more intuitive to get up and running.
@@Moe_Lester_fromUptwnbut asses has had months to tinker before the release but didnt listen to the reviews so good luck. Notice that no updates after that crappy 3.19 bios update? 😂😂😂
Lets not forget the steam deck wasnt perfect at Launch as well and rumors has it windows working on a Handheld version of windows so finger X.. I love both my Asus Rog Ally and Deck the Future of Handheld looking promising
I'm curious what are they gonna do with a handheld version of windows, is it just windows but much better to navigate with a controller and still have stupid bloatware like Candy Crush, hopefully not but at the same time I'm gonna be annoyed if I have to login to my MS account, which is really annoying but I'm not gonna be suprised since MS wants my ass.
That was a hackathon project it went nowhere. The guy who's idea it was went and talked to some people and the issue is everyone you'd need are assigned to other more important things.
If it cost 600$ for this kind of performance everywhere in the world. It might stand some small chance but for inflated 873$ they sell it here in europe? You might as well be better off with laptop
The value proposition is a lot worse in Europe, agreed. But gaming laptops are similarly inflated. I'm running Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Street Fighter 6, Forza Horizon 5 and Hogwarts Legacy at 1080p on medium settings. I also have an XG Mobile (RTX 3080) and that makes the combo crazy disruptive. So for my use case, the Ally is amazing.
@@shonen84 i can easily find gaming laptop with 8 cores cpu and 3050ti for same price as rog ally here which has better gaming performance. Valve has much better value proposition here in europe since it cost just 458 $ for 64 gb version. even with extra 512 gb ssd it is still 512 $ which is about 360 $ cheaper than rog ally which make much more huge price difference between them here in europe. For barely 20% more performance with worse battery life ,it is definetly not worth the value.
@@shonen84 nah it's just dumb USA and also Canada don't include the VAT tax on all things, like for example I bought a Ryzen 5 5600 like a few months ago and the listed price was 210$CAD, then I put the product on the counter and it was like 273$CAD, shits annoying and that's why car dealers here can get away saying its a "low" price for a price of a kidney, then I'm on the dealership gonna buy one and then bam they stole all of my kidneys.
@@baldlyrudy Steam Input tends to do that. That issue has never happened for me unless steam was open. Make sure the process os closed in task manager.
Got mine a few days ago. Have about 15 hours of gaming on it I’d say and so far it’s been amazing. All I’ve played so far is Diablo iv which is a match made in heaven on this device. At 720p it looks good. But at 1080 it looks absolutely amazing. The 900 looks great ! Can’t wait for many more hours gaming on this bad boy
Nice! It's potentially one of the best handheld experiences out there right now. And I can't wait for the next update to Armoury Crate. It seems like some good stuff is on the way.
I am not sure how many would agree with me, I personally think the analog layout of steam deck is much better. The analog placement like switch controller is kinda uncomfortable
I like both tbh, but yeah the steam deck layout is really good even tho it’s kinda weird. You just have to get used to it but it’s not like it’s hard to require your brain to work with it
At the end of the day Windows just isn't made with this form factor in mind. This is why I prefer my Steamdeck to other handhelds. Windows is nice for an option in a dual boot situation but I can't have it as my only option for a handheld.
Windows is definitely not meant for this type of application. If you push some of the jank aside, as well as the awkward instances where you only use windows, then you're essentially good. But yeah, Steam Deck is just a smoother experience.
@@baldlyrudy I actually would like to boot Steam OS to the Ally. Kinda wonder if the games that run better on the Steamdeck would run even better on the Ally if it were on Steam OS.
How did anyone read any reviews, specs, or watch any YT and expect this to be a console experience. It's WINDOWS. This thing is almost exactly what I expected. In exchange for dealing with windows touch screen quirks you get access to EVERY PC GAME and don't need to mess with the SD game compatibility Quirks. It's also faster, lighter, smaller and doesn't have that abysmal screen of the SD.
so far i'm enjoying the ally. set up took long but as expected since it is after all a windows device. only thing outside of battery life that i hate about it is the analog joysticks. they seem too loose so adjusting sensitivity is a must on it. and for the price4 of a e-gpu, i would get a desktop 4090 for a 100 or so more. also getting the e-gpu version of the 4090 is a bad idea for this device because of the major cpu bottleneck that you would get. btw where did you get that usb splitter?
@@baldlyrudy Look at it this way to blow our mind even more. the CPU scores the same compared to the i9 11900k. sheeesh. the GPU scores similarly on 3dmark like a GTX 1650. it's pretty impressive
I have both. Ally is level above, build quality, frames, weight. It's funny to hear all these people complain about battery life because they plug and play their steam deck anyways.
Yeah the battery life isn't much of an issue. I can see it being a problem if you are often on the go and don't have a lot of options to plug in, but otherwise it's fine to sit by an outlet, plug in, and play. You aren't going to get as good of a performance out of the matchine on battery. My biggest gripe about it is really the docked mode experience. It's impossible to dock it without having a keyboard and mouse if you want to access Command Center or Armory Crate. Right now, that I know of, there's no way to access that stuff on just a controller. We need an official Ally Wireless Controller with those buttons for the full docked experience. I'm buying one if/when it ever comes out.
@@cronoz7Similar battery life at 10 and 15W. The Deck does have the advantage of being able to go 3W, so when streaming or playing very undemanding games, the best possible battery life on the Deck is way better
I knew this was a portable PC, not a Switch. The main selling point for me was Windows. Sure, Valve is using a compatibility layer to run Windows games, but in reality that is not great. I have used that stuff in the past when I had my own linux boxes, and man, gaming is not that great on linux. Also, in terms of the thumb sticks, you can customize their sensitivity in the settings.
That's great! But you also need to keep in mind that some people will go into an Ally expecting a similar experience to the Switch or even the Steam Deck. Also, if you look at 11:52, you'll see that my dead zone is set to 0%, and it still takes a lot of input before it registers on the Ally.
I have a Steam Deck and I just bought a GPD Win Max 2. I found almost all game that I want to play run very well on the Deck (I have libraries of more than 300 games). On the Win Max 2, I have less desire to install and play games since it just feels more finicky.
Tbh I've got an ally and I have no issues whatsoever. For the average consumer this is fine. If you nit pick anything, you will always find a problem imo
So this is just a PC and I haven’t had one of those in over 15 years. Does this mean I have to watch out for spyware and adware and I have to use a McAfee and stuff? And I have to make sure there isn’t crap running the background, that’s draining my battery? Or am I good as long as I’m not downloading music from Limewire anymore lol
Really wish reviewers would stop selling building a pc when discussing the eGPU combined with the ROG Ally. I can go to a hotel and travel and setuo p my ROG Ally as a desktop whereever i go. Where if i build a pc im not putting that on a plane to travel with me. Thats the true beauty of the ROG Ally its mobile and with the eGPU it makes it even more worthwhile. Now if you dont travel and a home body, then i totally agree, build a PC and be merry
You know what, I hadn't thought about using this as an editing machine. I have an ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 and that's my mobile editing station. It would be interesting to use the ASUS ROG Ally and an editing station on the go with an eGPU. Then again, I'd probably want to have a portable monitor as well, because I would not want to edit photos or videos on that little screen. It's an interesting thought though. 🤔
@@baldlyrudy i can understand the portable monitor, if i am travelling i would just use the tv in the hotel room. Yeah its not 120hz but its still a monitor. I have cattied gaming monitors on trips with me ( car ride telravelling) and its still a pain regardless hahah
I haven’t used Xbox in a while. What Xbox games can I get on here? Only what’s on game pass? Or can I just purchase from the Xbox store digitally and stuff
I’m not gonna lie it’s annoying when someone reviewing a product says “I do find myself reaching for this product I’m reviewing more than this older product I am not reviewing.” I mean obviously you’re going to use the product you are currently reviewing more than you would a product you’re not reviewing. At least I would hope that is the case.
I'm not gonna lie, that's why I said that it's probably because it's the new and shiny thing in my gaming repertoire. I want to see what happens when the honeymoon phase dies down.
They should either cancel the $599 version or better yet release it with the same processor and everything except with 256gb memory, such as with the steam deck, all steam decks are the same except for memory. Would be nice if they would release like 3 models $599 with 256gb, $699 with 512 and another top tier with 2TB
I just think the Z1 Extreme is a no brainer. Why get something that's only $100 cheaper with so much less processing power. I'd get it if it was a 25% difference, but we're talking about 1/4 of the teraflops in one versus the other.
@@baldlyrudy that’s my point the weaker model should either by at least $200 cheaper , but if it’s almost the same price they should not release it at all, what they should do is what valve did with steam deck where the only difference is storage
@@baldlyrudy if they do release it after all, would be interesting to see how it compares in terms of gpu/processing power to steam deck, my guess if the extreme is about 25-30% more powerful then the steam deck, then the weaker rog model might be on par with steam deck, but only on higher wattage (probably) at 15 wats it will most like be just a little weaker then the steam deck, like 10-15%….
If you enjoy a console like experience, than no. If you’re willing to work within its limits and be patient than maybe. SteamOs on the steam deck has the best user experience, but is lacking in comparison. I am returning my ally for the lack of being able to sleep it and come back, but not interested in going back to the steam deck, because the ally screen blows the decks away. All imo of course.
The screen is SO GOOD! That 100% sRGB is gorgeous. And the 1080 screen is great too. I'm also a photo and video nerd, so I greatly appreciate the screen.
@@baldlyrudyone thing I forgot to add tho is steamdeck supports you repairing your device what I fear with most handhelds it soon warrenty leaves they not make parts available just being another thing to go into the trash.
@@pastdue7170 I feel like that's the case for most manufacturers today, including Valve. The ease of swapping the SSD on the Ally as well as the Steam Deck just shows more companies are okay with you opening up your device. The Ally's SSD is literally right there after removing the back. The joysticks are easy to swap (just like the Steam Deck.) Third party companies like Gulikit make pretty solid replacement parts.
@@baldlyrudy valve supports full repair you go ifix it get every part even replacment motherboard. Thumbstick and ssd are meant to be upgraded, but the rest is not in other handhelds. Planed obsolescence is a pain.
I'm going for Rog Ally right away... My Steam Deck 512gb anti-glare etched glass i bought for $649 can't run my favourite games e.g. FIFA 23 & more... can you just imagine... Valve is aware of this issues from customers but didn't find solutions...now Ally has taken over...i just make payment for Ally now.. gonna kick my steam deck out. steam deck would have been better is it run all games.
The thing that makes me hesitate is whether or not the software updates will even come (especially in the long term). You see all the time with laptops that the built-in proprietary software doesn't get updates except for like a year tops. As hardware manufacturers, it isn't cost efficient for them to keep supporting it. With the Steam Deck, not only has Steam already committed to no new hardware revision for a few years (meaning that they only have to support this version), but they also have the intention to. As the OS developer, it is NECESSARY to keep updating it (the same way Windows is). Additionally, since they also run the store, it only benefits them to make it better. They have also JUST updated the steam app to have the same UI as the Steam Deck, which helps them keep the codebase the same and makes updating both beneficial and easier.
I feel like that makes the Steam Deck a better investment, because it has longer term guaranteed support. Same reason I like conventional consoles, because the XSX and PS5 are probably going to be supported for another 6 years.
I don't think it affects my decision to purchase it too much, because this is the equivalent of buying an okay gaming laptop. The battery life is similar and so is the amount of support that I'm expecting it'll get in the future. Time will really tell, but I'm reaching for the new and shiny, ATM.
Thank you for an HONEST review. Very rare. Between my own unit, and my friends, 4 out of 6 devices needed to be returned due to QC issues. The Mobile EGPU is just.. Franky it's stupid. The accessories are bad, the software is shocking and 30-40% of your performance being lost due to a bios update is unacceptable. Not a good device.
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment and watching the video. I will say, the latest AMD driver update seemed to have improved the performance issue by about 20%. But yes, these wrinkles need to be ironed out.
People are just salty that this has better performance, higher refresh rate screen, 1080p screen, smaller form factor, more customisable controls and profiles and can output at a higher wattage. Also apps like GamePass for Pc work seamlessly and their argument is setting up was a little time consuming. The deck at launch was awful until it was patched.
Hey guys, I got my ally last week and everything has been going great untill today. My speakers randomly stopped working and I can't seem to figure out the problem. When it turn on the logo sound effect work but once I sign into windows it's just dead silent. If any of you have this problem or have a solution let me know please :( **also forgot to mention when I plug in headphones they work just fine, it's just the speakers and I don't know what to do /:
Hmmm...do you think it could be a driver needing to be updated for the speaker? Or maybe something got loose with the speakers physically? I would open it up myself, but I wouldn't recommend voiding warranty for that if you don't want to. Have you reached out to ASUS?
I find it funny when people say the speakers on it are amazing, sure from what I've seen they're like the best of handhelds, but they're like the same as my iPad mini, which is you know, an iPad mini. And it doesn't even begin to compare with the Macbooks. Apple is so far ahead in hardware, except they don't have the software to play the games....
I have an iPad mini as well. The speakers are punchier than the iPad Mini. I don't have much experience with MacBook speakers though. I have an ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 and the speakers on there are much better than the Ally, but that's comparing a full blown laptop to a handheld. They're not at the same level, IMO.
@@baldlyrudy iPad has better low end, they're both more than loud enough so I'm not sure which is actually louder. I think it's fair game to compare this to a Macbook because of internal volume, the iPad mini is a very thin device with very limited volume where as these handheld consoles have very thick bodies with very big internal volume.
I rather use my gaming laptop that has 32gb of ram and my SD. I need one more gen at least before I switch up. The Ally isn’t all that and really isn’t an upgrade from the sd
@@retroconsole_ it's also that but also 3rd window laptop makers don't have control over the software, unlike Valve which has control pretty much everything.
Put that bad boy on silent mode, 720p, 60hz, and play games that are 2D side rollers or pixel games. Easy. You could do the same thing with the Steam Deck.
@@baldlyrudy with the steam easy but not this one…well at least i havent managed…maybe like u said a 2D like pokemon kinda game but i dont think we can get 2 ours on a indie of todays… I like the rog but not as close as i like the deck…lets just say if rhe deck had the same power and a slight better screen the deck would still win. At the moment i look at the rog as an alternative cause the deck is too dam good…
The Ally is the most interesting tech. because. You can use it as an second PC. with 2.4 ghz mouse and keyboard. as an gaming server when you play with your real gaming pc. or you can use it as an streaming pc with the right dock. modding your handhelt will be also possible. a bigger under case for bigger battarie. or a mod for an nvme M.2 2280. iam thinking about for a dicking station with multible usb ports for external nvme usb drives with an static library for steam. A Steam deck ish back cover for bigger hands.
I haven't tested it on the ROG Ally, but I trust amFilm with all of my other electronics. Here's a link (affiliate) to their Amazon listing: amzn.to/3Xfr28I
Depends on your settings, but the difference between this and the Steam Deck is there. To me it's just not enough to justify someone going from the Steam Deck to the ASUS ROG Ally.
My biggest issue is I can't get my steam games to play in full screen mode. Specifically metal slug and marvel vs capcom3 not sure why but it's annoying. Lol. Feel like I've tried every option already. Other then that, a few crashes, some freezing otherwise everything else is awesome!
I have a modern gaming PC, a gaming laptop and a M2 Ipad pro...and yet I want the Asus ROG Ally to play PC games and emulators on the sh*tter, in bed and on the go. Oh so close to pulling the trigger on this. Having a full blown windows PC on the go sounds so enticing but so unnecessary.
the rog ally has a design flaw... the card reader should not be put near the top vents....multiple users reported card reader dead due to too high temperature
Hmmm...The amount of bugs that were there as well as the length of setup wasn't expected from me. If you're okay with that and figuring out how to get around the bugs, then yeah. I'd recommend it. On another note, do you have a Steam Deck? Because if you do, then I don't think you'd need to jump on this unless you want to play games that don't run on Linux.
@@baldlyrudy I’m just thinking about getting a gaming handheld. Everyone is saying steam deck. But what about Ayaneo 2 or ROG alli? They both have WAY better specs than the steam deck
Well, it depends on what you're into. There are some games that simply don't run on Linux (Steam Deck), but they're usually games that have anti-cheat software (like Call of Duty). Also the Steam Deck experience, albeit not perfect, is really seamless with Steam as a whole. With the ROG Ally (or any Windows based handheld) you can download all of the launchers and play anything you would play on PC. Like I said in the video, I've been reaching more for the Ally than the Steam Deck lately. Let's see if it holds past the honeymoon phase.
I'm planning on doing a video comparing the two soon, but yeah, I think it's worth reviewing a year out. I'm curious if ASUS will continue supporting it or if they'll just drop support and announce an Ally 2. I'll share my thoughts regardless. 👍
hey btw the sd card does not expand mem it adds storage also you talk in dept about the 2 things in the allys controller that were not holo sensers and just the 2 that have them where ok this seemed very rushed and lacks alot of details and just simple things you should of went over plus who thought the ally would be flawless everyone who bought one knew that windows was going to be poopy for a while? again makes this whole thing seemed rushed
If you don't mind a few bugs right now, then the Ally is more powerful. The Steam Deck is way more stable right now. The hope is that things will be more stable in the future for the Ally.
Steam deck was wayyyyyy too hard for me to set up my games on especially from other stores like epic and ubisoft. I tried 3 different methods to try and get Harry Potter to work to no avail. Granted I've never messed around with this os but I gave up and sent it back and got the Ally. No complaints here but it's what I'm used to lol. I most definitely would have kept my deck if it woulda been more user friendly I liked the deck but not being able to play certain games I just couldn't justify keeping it. Maybe if I woulda been more familiar with Heroic or Lutris but for someone at my level it was impossible
I guess that IS an issue with using the Steam Deck. Although, in fairness, that isn't the intended use of the Steam Deck. It's the same as sideloading another app store on Android or iOS, which usually doesn't work or messes things up too. The intended use of the Steam Deck is to use Steam. Verified games on Steam should work seamlessly (mostly). I understand you want to play other games, but that just isn't what it's made for. It's not designed to do that. To really enjoy and get the most out of the Steam Deck, you must use it the way it's meant to. You have to take it at face value. Just my two cents. 🙂 I do have all the major platforms to play games on (PC, PS5, XSX, and Switch), so perhaps I do have the luxury to play any game I want on at least one of the platforms. I don't feel the need to force games onto one platform.
Perhaps, you shouldn't have gotten a STEAM deck and expected to use anything else (not Steam). It's like me getting an Xbox then saying, "darn I can't play the Horizon Series and Uncharted", or getting a PS5 then saying, "damn it, I can't play Mario Bros. and Zelda". It IS called a STEAM deck, not an ANY LAUNCHER deck.
Yea it just takes some time to get used to it and figure out how to set everything up on it.. I’m loving my Steam deck I got gamepass on it and switch games so it’s just figuring out how to get it to work lol
I really don’t want to be rude here, but I think you just did everything wrong idk. Using other stores on the steam deck is super simple, just download heroic and done. It just works. It’s ok if you didn’t like it but I’m pretty sure it was more of an user error than the products fault…
First off I didn't expect anything being new to Linux and I followed 3 different methods for downloading Harry Potter. I had no issues downloading epic. Ubisoft and they worked just fine lol. It was just when it came to games like Harry potter needing microsoft visual c++ that was the issue. I didn't know how to add it to Harry Potter when I just had epic on Heroic. I tried downloading 86 and 64. Then I tried adding it to the Harry Potter folder and nothing worked. I didn't know any other way but what I Google so I liked my deck it's just when it came to needing to Google how to add certain games and what not it's tedious no one can say it's not. I'm not super tech savvy but I know how to follow directions and when those don't work and I can't figure it out I gave up. I mean everything else worked great just need a little more user friendly imo when it comes to those things because someone with no tech woulda not even know where to begin. But again windows is what most are use to but that can change.
@onomatopoeia5540 ow I've got m all too and I still got the asus ally and I'm loving it .laptop and pc is tinkering too..in fact for amd it's exactly the same whether it's laptop or ally .
Firmware updates a con? 🤔 The stand is really an issue to you? Seems like a biased review, I have an Ally and none of your cons have bothered me at all, love it so far!
Who said firmware updates is a con? This should've shipped with less bugs. It's far from a seamless experience in comparison to other handhelds on the market.
Let my gaming handheld be a gaming handheld dang it! lol I want someone to make a handheld gaming device to dedicated handheld console and not a miniature gaming pc or tablet. NOthing against pc gamers, i enjoy the simplicity of systems that act more like consoles than pcs.
@@baldlyrudy I had thought about it but for me i dont lik ehow bulky it is and told by few people their are times you do have to fiddle with settings as much as you do laptop or pc. I had thought about the rog ally since its a little smaller than the steamdeck but idk.
Hmmm...maybe when it first launched, since it was buggy. But most of the issues are ironed out through patches with the Steam Deck. If you're used to Windows, then the ROG Ally is a good choice as well.
@@baldlyrudy You know what the funny thing is, i used to playing handheld cause screens were so small. But after playing my brothers oled totally fell in love with handheld mode as long as the screen is big enough. So got myself an oled for myself, it may not have every game i want on it but totally like it. Love they brough back the cartridges too ^^ Since then i kind browse all these handhelds im seeing but again most if not all them either retro handhelds, android tablets with integrated controls or portable gaming pc. @@FierroSev While I agree with all the cons that you pointed out, but SD has more stable software, better community support and (at least from the beginning of the lift cycle till this moment) has the full support of a reliable and enthusiastic teams/company. The SD feels like it is more likely to last longer in the product cycle than anything else, so I think you are not making a wrong choice going with the SD really.
@@kyletan4063 community is trash all they do is troll um of course it's better by software they done plenty of updates and tweaking so no steam deck is not better lmfao
@kyletan4063 linux is more stable than windows. I agree 100% as user of Linux, it is night and day. As for better support? No bro, windows wins on that front as everything just works for it. All games just work. And how would the steam deck last longer? Windows 11 will get all the support it needs, asus will just need to get the bios right, and the hardware will carry the Rog Ally beyond the steam deck in the long term. There handheld aren't like PSP vs NDS, where games carried the DS to victory. If you want to make that case, the Ally already has the larger list of compatible games. The fact that steam has a community just to try and makes games work shows how much better positioned windows is over steam os.
@@FierroSev Windows had made a lot of promises on supporting handheld, but I will believe it when I see it because that is a big claim and I am not confident on that just yet. I can't comment on Asus as I have never used their products. But yeah! I am more than happy if Microsoft get their shit together to build a better system. Laptop hardware on the windows side is so much better now, windows is holding them all back in a lot of ways, like we still can't get the auto sleep right, in 2023, what the hell!? Allowing my work laptop to go to sleep when I close it is like getting a lottery, would I have battery the next day? Would I not? How exciting! That doesn't really help with my confident towards them as of now. With that said, I will be one of the first the nuke the linux on my steam deck and install it if they actually get their shit together, for the exact reasons that you pointed out. Bottom line is, more handheld the better, I am just thrill seeing something to be compared with Steamdeck. Though I am already own a deck, I am still really exciting seeing more legit alternatives from different venders. I am very much looking forward to a day where we can put the Steamdeck and its OS behind like how we said goodbye to Nokia's Symbian, still legendary and historical significant, but its way in the past now. And the reason I feel like the steam deck will last longer is, Valve is openly admit that they aren't planning the next version anytime soon, and like I said, they have been very active and "good guy valve" towards the customers for now, which builds confident for small nobodies like myself, who can't afford new toy every year. As on the Asus, it's not just on Asus for this, Microsoft need to get make their things better for handheld. I don't want my handheld start slowing down in a year or so for reasons that I can't figure out, which is what I am dealing with with my own Windows Laptop right now
Great video bro but you have to understand it just came out the steam deck had problems my ps5 had problems then later on down the road it was smooth sailing i have the ally and im loving it i have a laptop and a gaming handheld in one i wanted a new laptop and the steam deck but the ally came my way and it was a no brainer but the point im making is that the handheld just came out give it a chance.
I don't have a steam deck and would not get a SteamVac but I do have the Rog Ally the thing is buggy as hell I'm just so disappointed I'm really debating on taking it back to Best Buy today
That's a big fat lie!!!!!!! U can finish your gaming session without a charger!? Really? This thing dies in 49 mins. U have to stay next to an outlet. What perks did Asus give u to say that? Please show me how to get 5 hrs on the rog? The steam deck has way battery life and a more efficient operating system that works.
You must not play many 2D pixel games. Think games like Hollow Knight, Celeste, etc. Also, to think that ASUS would care about a channel of this size and give me any sort of perks. You humble me.
@baldlyrudy I'm not not even gon argue with you bald head need man. If u Gon say the rog does 5hrs, you should've at least gave some examples. You game a few examples exclusively to me when I called u out on it. I'll have to give those games a try and see, because no matter what game I throw at the ally, u only get like 40 mins. The battery life is what going to make this device flop. Why invest in a handheld where u only get 40 mins? It defeats the purpose of being a handheld. ✌️ rather get the switch 2 over this thing.
the battery life is fine.. Its using 30w of power... how long are u expecting it to last... Jus use it plugged in. it's fine. and truthfully it's awesome and way better than the steam deck. I have both, and the ally plays all the games I wanted to play on the steam deck and couldn't due to anti cheat. I use ally for graphically intense games, and deck for Indie titles tht aren't as demanding.
Mannnn it suck because I've always been a fan of my steam deck you know but after I tested my Asus Ally with how much game play it could hold from 100% to 0 and it was hold 4 hours exact I was lik3 smh yeahhhh that going to be my new to go to device like when I go out of town or something you know and also it charges from 0% to full in a hour and 40min so that's not bad 👏👏👏😎👍 oh and the game I was play in that 4 hours mark was jedi fallen order
In love at first until a few days after… Pretty cheap unit stand, pretty cheap that they didn’t include a carrying bag, compared to steam deck… Amongst all the other headaches, returned and went for a steam deck until next gen steam dock’s released… Sad… Pretty nice console but wayyy too many headaches, lag, bad customer service and freezing up on occasion including the disgusting battery life which was a complete joke. Sad….
Took forever to set this thing up and annoyed the hell out of me. "A-Zeus" please if you want to grow your channel - this is a dealer breaker for a lot of people, it determines if youre legit or not.
Yup definitely mispronounced it. After looking into it, because my curiosity got the best of me, I found that the origin of the name is the ending of pegasus, and its founder wanted it to be pronounced as such. Alas, it is what it is. "A-Zeus" is incorrect. ua-cam.com/video/hjjoGtXV6pY/v-deo.html
@@baldlyrudysorry you pronounce it the way Asus does it with the accent just like when you pronounce English words the Japanese people use with an accent when referring to certain references. You dont follow the origin of the word in this case since the company is Taiwanese. Just like certain words between the American English, British English, and Australian English all have different sounds. In this case you pronounce it base on Taiwanese English. Everyone knows it is derive from the last half of the word pegasus. And even that has variation "pegahhsus" or "pegeysus" or "pegAsus (the way you like to do it)" You can stick to your guns and that's your prerogative. However, most high subscribers channels already know what you are telling me but they are smart enough to know the nuance on why A-zuess is the being use instead of A-sus. Its up to you to decide if that nuance is relevant to your success or not.

No, I picked up the Steam Deck last year. I want to get the Rog Ally a little down the road when it doesn't fry my Expensive SD Cards.
The lack of seamless is exactly what I was expecting.
I'm sure that can be patched.
@@Moe_Lester_fromUptwn Its Windows 11.
It cant.

Thanks dude! That means a lot to me. 🙌
Completely agree that mic is clean and the video quality high with great lighting.
I must agree as well.
I just picked the rog ally, still working on getting things working right and getting used to it, so far it isn't bad, I do like how seemless the stea, deck is, minus the few tweaks here and there, but all in all so far what I'd expect from a windows operating system
Of course things will be tricky at first, it's a PC, it takes time to get all the patches and updates to install.
Yup.
Regarding the stand, I saw it in videos while waiting for my Ally to arrive and thought "hell no". Luckily, someone had already designed a nice 3D printable stand for it, so I had that ready by the time my Ally arrived.
Nice! Do you have a link to the prints?
works just fine with steam dock
ROG ally. Absolutely jank to get set up and get going, however once it is set up the thing is a monster. Its played everything well that ive thrown at it so far.
Agreed. It's a heck of a chipset.
I've already gone back to the Steam Deck.
That's harsh. Thing isn't even out 1month.

Okay, it's the weirdest thing. I have to highlight the icon with the controller and then long press on the icon to move it. Is that how you did it?

Yup. I get that.
Lets not forget the steam deck wasnt perfect at Launch as well and rumors has it windows working on a Handheld version of windows so finger X.. I love both my Asus Rog Ally and Deck the Future of Handheld looking promising
Agreed. Getting a big company like Asus to put their hat into the handheld space is exciting. The future is bright.
For barely 20% more performance with worse battery life ,it is definetly not worth the value.
esp with 1hr batt life

@@baldlyrudy Your welcome man. can you see if the Rog ally can play Xdefiant?!? No need for Video just curious!

ASUS tried really hard to make it a console-like experience with Armoury Crate.
very informative, thank you for this!
Thank you! 🙌

There's so much to love about it. And that chipset. 🤌
so far i'm enjoying the ally. set up took long but as expected since it is after all a windows device. only thing outside of battery life that i hate about it is the analog joysticks. they seem too loose so adjusting sensitivity is a must on it. and for the price4 of a e-gpu, i would get a desktop 4090 for a 100 or so more. also getting the e-gpu version of the 4090 is a bad idea for this device because of the major cpu bottleneck that you would get. btw where did you get that usb splitter?
Are you talking about the Jsaux one? I got it on Amazon.
I love my Ally. im on a Ally Review binge watch.

Thanks dude! Much appreciated! 🙌
I have both. Ally is level above, build quality, frames, weight. It's funny to hear all these people complain about battery life because they plug and play their steam deck anyways.
how would you rate the battery life compared to the Steam Deck? What about the track pads, do you miss those on the Ally?
"build quality" lmao
In the past it wasn't great, but the strides being made is not the same.
I have a Steam Deck and I just bought a GPD Win Max 2. I found almost all game that I want to play run very well on the Deck (I have libraries of more than 300 games). On the Win Max 2, I have less desire to install and play games since it just feels more finicky.
He forgot to mention you can add a 4090 for $2000 plus a monitor making this a portable beast
Might as well get a gaming laptop at that point.
Portable waste of money. 2 grand to help an already overpriced console? No thanks😂
Besides my initial set up head ache, mine has worked really well. I am loving it
Tbh I've got an ally and I have no issues whatsoever. For the average consumer this is fine. If you nit pick anything, you will always find a problem imo
Of course. There are always people that don't have any issues.

Seriously dude. It's embarrassing.
Dont forget the "waste 2 grand for an egpu" 😂

That would be interesting. But yeah, I agree with you.
Would you recommend this device, for a console gamer?
I usually only play the Switch and PS5
If you enjoy a console like experience, than no. If you’re willing to work within its limits and be patient than maybe. SteamOs on the steam deck has the best user experience, but is lacking in comparison. I am returning my ally for the lack of being able to sleep it and come back, but not interested in going back to the steam deck, because the ally screen blows the decks away. All imo of course.
@bababooey9251 interesting thank you for answering my questions
Nope. Not at all. I wouldn't recommend this for a console gamer. This is more for a PC gamer that doesn't mind tinkering with things if needed. 20:43

@@pastdue7170 I feel like that's the case for most manufacturers today, including Valve. The ease of swapping the SSD on the Ally as well as the Steam Deck just shows more companies are okay with you opening up your device. The Ally's SSD is literally right there after removing the back.
Even phones also get updates for like 2 years tops (maybe a year more on bug fixes)
Agreed. ASUS is, after all, a hardware company. They want to push more hardware above all else. I agree with the points you bring up.
@@baldlyrudyDoes that affect your opinion on the whether or not to purchase it?
I feel like that makes the Steam Deck a better investment, because it has longer term guaranteed support. Same reason I like conventional consoles, because the XSX and PS5 are probably going to be supported for another 6 years.
I don't think it affects my decision to purchase it too much, because this is the equivalent of buying an okay gaming laptop. The battery life is similar and so is the amount of support that I'm expecting it'll get in the future. Time will really tell, but I'm reaching for the new and shiny, ATM.
I think the bad battery life and power consume is because of windows. If you try and run it with steamos the battery life would be much better.
Too many background processes? 🤣
Wait till you hear Ally fanboys gloss about the idea of buying the egpu 😂😂😂
People are just salty that this has better performance, higher refresh rate screen, 1080p screen, smaller form factor, more customisable controls and profiles and can output at a higher wattage. Also apps like GamePass for Pc work seamlessly and their argument is setting up was a little time consuming. The deck at launch was awful until it was patched.
My hope is that the wrinkles will get ironed out with future patches on the Ally.
And is still inferior to a laptop😂😂😂
Cool you got one.
Thanks.

**also forgot to mention when I plug in headphones they work just fine, it's just the speakers and I don't know what to do /:
Hmmm...do you think it could be a driver needing to be updated for the speaker? Or maybe something got loose with the speakers physically? I would open it up myself, but I wouldn't recommend voiding warranty for that if you don't want to. Have you reached out to ASUS?
Takes some finesse to setup. But nothing else comes close. Batt life sucks but other than that I love it.
Agreed.
Asus better fix those bugs

iam thinking about for a dicking station with multible usb ports for external nvme usb drives with an static library for steam.
A Steam deck ish back cover for bigger hands.
I prefer a windows OS for the sole reason I can optimize the OS my self relatively easy. Linux is too complicated when you grew up with windows.
I get that.
Whats the best rog screen protector
I haven't tested it on the ROG Ally, but I trust amFilm with all of my other electronics. Here's a link (affiliate) to their Amazon listing: amzn.to/3Xfr28I
Mine lags a lot, and when playing games the frame rates suck
Depends on your settings, but the difference between this and the Steam Deck is there. To me it's just not enough to justify someone going from the Steam Deck to the ASUS ROG Ally.
My biggest issue is I can't get my steam games to play in full screen mode. Specifically metal slug and marvel vs capcom3 not sure why but it's annoying. Lol. Feel like I've tried every option already. Other then that, a few crashes, some freezing otherwise everything else is awesome!
There is an app to force full screen in games. Used it for the terrible nier automata port. Forgot the exact name for it.

Its new on the market. Give it time
Agreed. Just like the Steam Deck, the jank will get ironed out.
Lol. That's probably the best way to go about it. It's a nice to have, and not a must.
I love mine idk about everyone else
Rog ally 512gb price is very affordable ❤
For what you get? Yup.
the rog ally has a design flaw... the card reader should not be put near the top vents....multiple users reported card reader dead due to too high temperature
Looking forward to the new console wars
So ROG alley isn’t recommended?
The title is very misleading
@@baldlyrudy cool! I guess time will tell. Maybe a year later if it’s still enjoyable?
Appreciate the feedback. 👍
You're not what i have expected
Thanks.
still have not made my mind on this or steam deck! :D
If you don't mind a few bugs right now, then the Ally is more powerful. The Steam Deck is way more stable right now. The hope is that things will be more stable in the future for the Ally.
If you don't like it take it back im tired of the negativity like the steam deck never had issues thats why i never take UA-cam reviews seriously
Nah. This thing is a beast. My hope is that things will get ironed out with updates to the software.
Mine returned....to the dump😂
Pay for an egpu dock and pay for the privilege of getting a 3080 or 4080 with these crazy prices? No thanks asus
You're better off getting an actual 3080 FE for a PC.
I do have all the major platforms to play games on (PC, PS5, XSX, and Switch), so perhaps I do have the luxury to play any game I want on at least one of the platforms.
Am i the only one that has a seemles experience
Must be, because that jank was rough. It's gotten better with updates. And that last AMD driver update helped with performance.
Windows are never optimized for gaming especially on a handheld. I stay away until gen 2....to see .😮
Believe me you are missing out .Find a nice spot in your living room near a power outlet and it's hours of AAA gaming fun .
@@1977themayanpriestbelieve me im not, pc and laptop>>>>> ally😂

@@1977themayanpriest tinkering aint a problem but unlike pc, this shit device is harder to repair 🤣
They had months before releasing this to the public, but asses didnt listen to the reviewers. 😂😂😂
Let my gaming handheld be a gaming handheld dang it! lol I want someone to make a handheld gaming device to dedicated handheld console and not a miniature gaming pc or tablet. NOthing against pc gamers, i enjoy the simplicity of systems that act more like consoles than pcs.
I 100% understand that viewpoint. If I were to recommend anything to you, it would be the Steam Deck then. It's a much more console-like experience.
I seen one company do handheld with physical cartridges but they mainly do retro style games and any indie games that the system can handle. Evercade i think it was called.
Yup. That's the right one. They're super cool, though I don't own one. 😅
The eGPU is stupid in all honesty. Another typical ASUS thing to do...add the port only for use with their eGPU.
Steam deck for the win. Lol
Lower resolution, refresh rate, slower apu, less compatible with software. Only reason to get the steam deck, is if you can't afford the ally.
My Ally is very Janky. Windows 11 is atrocious.

Might be a bit more powerful at high voltages, but the software, battery life, and low wattage performance are worse than steam deck.

Battery life is the real shame here. Amazing otherwise.
Agreed. The power behind it though is impressive.
the battery life is fine.. Its using 30w of power... how long are u expecting it to last... Jus use it plugged in. it's fine. and truthfully it's awesome and way better than the steam deck. Yup definitely mispronounced it. After looking into it, because my curiosity got the best of me, I found that the origin of the name is the ending of pegasus, and its founder wanted it to be pronounced as such. Alas, it is what it is. "A-Zeus" is incorrect.

And even that has variation "pegahhsus" or "pegeysus" or "pegAsus (the way you like to do it)"
