Finally someone has said it! Chipping with an 8 or 9 iron is easier to direct and gauge speed and distance. Nick Faldo is a big advocate for using a high iron to chip and run from the fringe because it works. It's very hard to get distance right when you are dealing with lob height as well. Don't let your pride get in the way of a better result.
My senior golf mate always uses his 8 iron when chipping from around the green; and his score is amazing. On average he plays 84, even though his GIR is probably only around 20%.
I'm a beginner. This was my greatest weakness so far, but this video made a remarkable difference. I tried it and got consistent results from 20 yards around the hole- one went in! Thanks!!
When I first started golfing, one of the courses I played I ended up getting paired up with an older gentleman, it was a nice round and he took a liking to playing with me as our demeanors matched. So after that first time, anytime I was playing there and he saw me he would ask to get paired up with my group. As I was just starting out I had a lot to learn and he asked if I minded him giving me a few tips, I told him I could use all the help I could get. Well, I didn't know it at first but turns out he was a golf instructor and here he was giving me lessons for free while we played. His tips on chipping around the green and getting out of traps around the greens really helped me improve my game rapidly and they still help me today. One of the things he taught me was around the greens it is usually easier to use an 8 or 9 iron, depending on your lye of course. I got away from this for a while but the other year I started getting back to using my 8 iron around the greens and it has helped my short game a lot, I would say I have saved on average at least 5 strokes a round, maybe more, but easily 5.
This was the best video I've ever seen on chipping. I was also the worlds worst chipper and not enjoying the game. Tip #1 explains why my contact was always suspect. Not using the bounce reduced my margin for error. Too many times I've laid the grass over the ball. Thank you for the help.
I took your driver and irons lessons to the range and it was a miracle. Can't wait to try these chipping techniques. 3 years watching several UA-cam instructors, you are by far the best!
Well I’m honored! Delighted to hear that those have helped a great deal and I expect the foundation for chipping in this one will benefit you too. Keep at this crazy game 💪🏌️♂️⛳️
I've been working on every detail of chipping improvement. Not one video mentioned "too much grip strength in the forearms and shoulders". I appreciate you bringing that point up, because other channels do not address the SIMPLE thing. Thank you
Love this video, my short game has gotten so much better since I've let go of all tension. The feel I use to make sure is almost allowing the club to rest on my trail fingers through the swing, almost just cradling the grip. Getting rid of tension is the best feeling in golf.
Thank you so much. I have really been struggling with my short game and usually blade the darn thing well past the hole. This is a game changer for absolute certain
Thank you so much for the kind words! It means a lot to hear that the tips are making a difference for you. That's the goal for sure... Better, simplerand more enjoyable golf for years to come.
Dude what an amazing video! I did great around the green after this, it's pretty crazy, specifically the bounce of the club, stepping up with a steeper shift helped so much.
I've used tip 2 and 3 my whole life. Tip one has become a chip changer for me. My ball is now more consistently on the green and definitely closer to the pin. Thanks.
Excellent thanks. I do tend to use my sand wedge a lot when 10-20yds from green. Sometimes I have used my seven to bump but not in this stance or style.
This is a wonderful video about chipping and how to perform from what to do at setup to how to get through impact please add the extension part after the impact and rotation which is not a lot but a must.
Alex thank you!! After 51 years at the game I love and countless lessons you have helped me immensely! The putting and chipping video’s are perfect. I am curious as to you filming location as the surroundings look very much like the NE USA. Great work on these!!! Cheers from Buffalo NY!
Thank you for this tip, around the greens I get a little scare that I’m going to skull the ball and it goes across the green and off the back, so I’ve been using a 8 iron and just doing the bump and run, now I’m going to try your methods and I’m sure I will be better with my 60° and 56° and I like the 9 iron idea as well. Now I just need to practice it.
Great video and instructions you even answered my question, which club do you suggest 9 iron I will start practicing with it as I use my A wedge for close shots, pitching wedge for longer shots
Chipping I have been always using my 56° and my 60° ….. found it hard to use them consistently. So I went to a 48° for bump and runs because flying the ball I think it a lot. I had too much tension so thank you for this video you just made chipping much more easier and now I have more confidence
Thank you for this video. You’re a talented teacher. One thing I don’t understand is when you select the 9 iron over the sand wedge you state the nine iron has more margin of error saying the swing is shorter. Wouldn’t that reduce the margin of error? Why would I choose a shot with greater risk of error?
Thanks for the reminder on Step #1. I have been working again on chipping from a stance close to the ball, as you show here. If I stand too far away, I find that I can "duck" into the shot, to compensate, causing a dreaded chili dip!!
Full chipping session today. Started off normal with my duffs and skulls and occasional just okay chip. Stopped, reset, remembered The Steps. Forced myself to get my chest going through the ball to face the target regardless of where the ball went (probably my single biggest issue). Finally got 1 then 2 then 3 in row and after that I could not miss one. This wasn't just a light bulb moment, but a million watt candle power moment/session. The loose arms was a close second b/c I though I was relaxing them but realized was always "straightening" them out. So, after relaxing them I could hit high or low shots at will. As a result, I am actually excited about playing a real round of golf again. After a few more practice sessions of course. 😎
There are two things that really helped me with these shots: 1) Holding the iron with a quasi putter-like grip, and 2) Envisioning the exact spot where I want the ball to make first contact with the ground (e.g. the fairway, the apron, or the green itself). This has been incredibly helpful when judging how fast the ball will travel and which line it will take once on the green. If I don't make a conscious effort to pick out the exact spot, I get mediocre results.
I've found that taking this approach (or something similar) to all my shots improves my game overall. If I don't visualize my drives and iron shots, pick out a target that I'm hitting towards (a specific tree in the distance, for example), then I'm all over the course.
absolutely love chipping on my 9. my first set of clubs i had odd irons a driver and a putter so i learned to chip on it and honestly if im not in the rough or sand ive got that trusty 9 out.
Hi Alex, one of the best videos in UA-cam. Thank you so much for your input. I have two questions. My problem is not digging in with the leading edge. Somehow this works. It is more I hit it with the leading edge the ball and the ball goes on the ground. What would be in this case to correct? Are you saying in chipping we should use always bounce? Thank you.
@@TheArtofSimpleGolfI think the Hybrid wedge will not dig on the bounce and something if you could compare the differences. Hope this makes sense. I do not own hybrids just curious.
Great video! Tension definitely is not our friend. Personally I feel comfortable and situationally dependent to use almost any club in my bag for chipping. I’ll use hybrids on tight lies 7 irons- PW for bump and runs, and SW or LW for anything out of the rough or sand. I try to avoid using my most lofted wedges as much as possible around the green. To much risk for the reward.
The 9 iron is my favorite club all around. It has always been my most versatile club and I use it pretty much anywhere inside 140, right up to the fringe.
I love all aspects of the game but these types of shots I have a particular fondness for. I play these kinds of shots around my home the most and when I'm consistent with the shots it's a beautiful feeling. As always, beautiful in its simplicity. I so enjoy learning from you. Thanks for putting this up. I'm fairly happy with the way chipping has come along, 10K balls later, but i'm not 100 % on where the ball should come into contact with the club face. And more than that, how do i repeatedly create that wonderfully addictive click of affirmation, the wedge-gasm. Haha, Sorry, but thats what its like as an addict. Cheers!
Thank you! Cheers! Too true. Keep at it and learn and get good at a couple of shot techniques and test it out on variable slopes, lies and distances ⛳️💪
Hi Alex great video and I often chip with the heel slightly off the ground and I found using a eight iron even easier to to chip with and allowed more room for error for me.
Nice tips. Liked the explanation of using the bounce. Used to chip everything, but now I always way up using the putter instead. This helps make more hole outs.
Really depends on how much height you need and how much green to work with. Have other short game lessons on here that help with some upgrade refinement. But I’d test it out. Contact is king so get good at that reliably
The best advice I ever received was to adjust your swing as if you were putting the ball that far. It works. Of course you have to get the rest of the stuff right, but it is all about club head speed and following through to the hole.
Great video Alex, thank you. I try to apply everything you mentioned, and it definitely helps. I have to get the feel though that I brake or stop the clubhead (to control roll) after contact. Should this be a conscious thought at all ?
I remember seeing a Dave Pelz video where if the distance from the flag to the collar of the green was 3 times the distance of the ball to the collar, you can use a 7 iron. twice the distance use an 8 iron and the same distance use a 9 iron. The higher club gives you more run distance on the putting surface. It seems to work pretty consistently for me.
My first pro. defined chipping as putting with a lofted club. I have a fantastic wristy flowing action which works about one percent of the time so at the limit of frustration I remember what I was taught but golf is supposed to be hard so I always regress.
Lol! We do like to make it more challenging for some reason. If we all played basic and simple shots and swings out s ores would be a lot more consistent. But it’s fun to keep tweaking and trying extra finesse things too
Another excellent video Alex, thank you. Such an important part of the game. I'm constantly practicing this in the garden and it has helped me out on the course. Thanks again for the great content.
That's fantastic did not know about setting up properly on wedges have never used my wedges in fairways because wedge shots always went hard left will definitely open my wedge irons shaft straight up can't thank you enough!!!!!!!!

But it’s fun to keep tweaking and trying extra finesse things too
Ive been using either a 7 or 8 iron for many years when chipping on from the “fringe”.
Thanks so much. I will try it today
How’d it go?
wow another amazing advice and easy to understand and apply. Thank you

Another excellent video Alex, thank you. Such an important part of the game. I'm constantly practicing this in the garden and it has helped me out on the course. Thanks again for the great content.
