Well here we are! It's Neo Geo series time! Because damn it...it's my favorite retro gaming platform of all time and I've been collecting for the Neo Geo AES for years! As far as retrogaming collecting goes...it's not cheap, but don't forget...you can always get the 1:1 experience on MiSTer FPGA, which is how I am playing this now! (No I am not...this is a Neo Geo CD exclusive episode...so fingers crossed we get Neo Geo CD support on MiSTer FPGA one day soon!)
Patreon Thanks : Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kuranghi, Jason Hixon, Sam Matthews, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Eric Walklet, J Z, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane, tobemorecrazy, Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holder Schmidt, Tim Lehner, matschmonster, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Sunder Raj and Dorfus!
Up next: you guys voted OVERWHELMINGLY for an exclusive episode on Samurai Shodown RPG...and I made that :) BUT I got a LOT of comments saying how Crossed Swords II was an underrated and underloved Neo Geo CD exclusive...so I made you an episode on it too! It's half beat em up, half first person adventure game with light RPG elements...and wholly fun!
Technically it was ported to Neo Geo AES / MVS by Neobitz...but since it's not official...its still a Neo Geo CD exclusive!

Loved and beat the original Crossed Swords on Neo Geo arcade. I never new there was a sequel! Thanks for posting!
Happy to do it
CROSSED SWORDS LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!
These games have been a long time favorite of mine and I've just recently been able to introduce friends to them since receiving some cabinets.
Crossed Swords II co-op a few beers deep is an outrageously wicked time 👌
Happy New Year Chief and congrats on another year of UA-cam! My library has grown substantially while working through your catalog and the morning releases are a major boost to my work week. Thanks for putting in all the work.
Happy to do the work. Just keep watching :) Happy NY!
"Kaiju-looking Godzilla-reject turtle" had me lol'ing :D
I figured people would enjoy that line
Nice. SNK made a 16-bit Dark Souls.
haha now that you mention it...they did!
Fun game Crossed Swords II is for the NGCD VGE. It's interesting how they made this game an exclusive for the unit. Thankfully Razoola was able to post it over with the help of Jeff Kurtz over at Neobitz. I thought it was a great idea doing so. Thank you for stopping by to share this with us kind sir. 8^)
Anthony...
It’s an exclusive that isn’t. I guess I still count it as an exclusive just because that’s what SNK intended
I played this game on my Mister FPGA. Didn´t know that it was an Neo Geo CD exclusive and it was later ported.
Yep. Fan port to the cartridge style. Loses the soundtrack but amazing to have it
@@VideoGameEsoterica that makes me wish a Neo Geo CD core on Mister FPGA too.
That’s my hope too. It deserves it
I was always gun shy about picking this game up on eBay, since I figured it was more of what the first game was, but it's good to hear it's more of a console game, rather than an arcade game.
Although I wish they gave you lives/continues to add to the challenge.
Yes you can just “grind to win”. But you can set artificial goals. Four deaths? Restart
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yup! For sure. I also mess with the dip switches on the unibios on the neo geo and set that to 4 continues on early games all the time. Keeps me coming back for more! :)
A smart move indeed
Being a big fan of this game I played it in the arcade as a kid at a pizza place I later went on to work at as an adult I have an MVS cart of the first game, later on I found out there was a sequel so I had to play it on of all systems the Dreamcast I burned a disc of it to play it. I think it plays a bit better than the first game even though I have a lot of nostalgia for the first one
Both are great games but I prefer II as well
Cheers! Happy New Year!
Same to you!
Another cracking video. I really like this game. I'd played the original on a mates AES system but never knew there was a sequel until I discovered it years later (via the Neo CD emu on Dreamcast!!!)
While I love the Neo 1-on-1 fighters its always nice when other genres are explored & this rounds out the library really well. It has a great & consistent art design & the gameplay has that one-more-go factor. Just a stylish game all round.
One day I'll own a copy for my Neo CD.
Every time I hear cracking I think of Wallace and Gromit lol. I appreciate the other genres on Neo Geo too as we def need them
@@VideoGameEsoterica Lovely bit of Wensleydale Gromit ;-)
😂
It would be amazing to see someone create an updated arcade version with some cameras to see movement and a "sword" used as the controls somehow would be pretty cool
Like Tsurugi and Mazan
Man I remember the last time I fought someone while people threw carrots at me. Dude’s skin turned to dust and just the bones were left- that’s how I knew I won. Also gems did blast out of his corpse at me.
Carrots...nature's deadliest produce
Thanks! I hadn't checked out this game yet, but there it is on my Mister, ready to be explored!
Enjoy it. Just be aware the soundtrack is different since it was never technically released on MVS
This genre is essentially an extension to the auto-scrolling, lightgun genre that started with Taito's Operation Wolf and even SNK's own Nam 1975, just with hack n slash mechanics instead of shooting mechanics. These enemy designs are fantastic and I would have loved to see more games in this style, like a Double Dragon-esque, beat em up 😎👍
At least we got this and The Super Spy but yes diff thematic versions of this formula would have been great
Man, you always find the craziest games I've never heard of that I instantly want to try.
haha you know my rule...homework assignment! Go play it and report back!
@@VideoGameEsoterica *insert big boss salute gif
haha I do wish YT had gif support
@@VideoGameEsoterica Reporting back. This game is completely awesome. yeah, you really have to have good reactions and pay attention to patterns. And it's a little odd to control at first. But once it clicks, its just great.
It just takes a bit of a practice
This is the game that got me into Neogeo CD emulation, honestly besides this and the Blue Mary Blues music video on Real Bout Special besides slightly better music on a few games nothing really impresses me on this console though I do love the Neo CD "boot up bios"
The boot up is a fun time
This man’s voice is like a warm glass of hot chocolate. Another great video.
With whiskey I hope. Haha thank!
@@VideoGameEsoterica Absolutely! Also that turtle is definitely a Gamera reference so I’m giving you homework to watch one or all 3 of the 90s Gamera films asap.
I’ve seen one a long time ago. But I’ve seen every Godzilla ever so there is that
My son and I played a ton of the first Crossed Swords on my MVS. Definitely need a memory card for that game, it's just too long to go through one sitting, at least standing up at a cabinet.
Yeah it def helps. Gotta save!
Cunning how the game mutes the enemies' colors when they're on the background and can't be reached. This game looks very good
Yes it’s a good visual indicator as to what to focus on
Why haven't we seen a modern indie dev do a game in this style?
From what I can tell, Crossed Swords influenced both the Dragon Quest Swords games and even a LOTR plug and play but then... Nothing?
That’s a good question. Genre just kind of died off
I really need to give this game a try. It looks kind of like a midevil Punch-Out adventure.
100% try it. It’s worth it :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica Did a play through of it tonight on my MiSTer. And yeah, it was really good! I want to do another play through already since I got a lot better at it as I made my way through it.
Yeah it takes a few playthroughs to get really good. Glad you enjoyed it though!
Awesome! I just ordered a "repro cart" for the MVS or whatever you would call it. A homebrew port maybe? I don't know haha.
I can't wait to check it out. The first game is pretty cool but not great and lacking variety and content.
I guess it’s not a repro since it never actually existed. More like a “homebrew cart”? Actually I don’t know what to call these haha
neo geo's dark souls
someone else mentioned that and now I will never be able to unsee it
Here for the Crossed Swords references or jokes
That’s why I picked crossed swords II. You can’t cross swords with just one sword
Thank you - you didn’t disappoint!
😂
JELLEY...must be Italian.
Lol
dude its hard as shit!!!
It’s not an easy game lol
