- You know the Neo Geo is the Cadillac of 90s video game consoles. You know the Neo Geo actively rocked arcades for fourteen years. You know it plays host to some of the most iconic fighting game franchises of all time. Did you also know that it has games that totally suck? I mean REALLY bad $#!% that no one should ever be bored enough to waste their time on kind of stuff. Games that make LJN titles look like AAA releases kind of stuff. Here's a list of my Top 5 worst games for SNK's Neo Geo.

King of the Monsters 2 is far superior.
On many occasions I think nostalgia interferes with how good a game is. I remember playing King of Monsters at the corner store when it came out in the two slot cabinet that had that and Wakuwaku 7, and they never changed them. So me and my friends played those games to no end. So, yes KOM was not the best, but to me it's the memories of friendship.
That definitely makes sense to me. I can recall playing it once back in the day and thinking “what the hell”. At that point we had SF2, the Konami games were in full swing, T2 was out. It just didn’t warrant any quarters in a lineup like that. That’s awesome though that you had access to Waku Waku 7. I never played that until way after its release.
Oof, I had totally forgotten about Fight Fever. It reminds me of one of those weird-ass DOS fighting games from the mid-90s. Really thought The Super Spy was gonna be on this list, though!

Yes! Very reminiscent of Fightin' Spirit for Amiga (even if Fever came before it). In fact both games feature a stage with the military chopper in the background in direct rip off of John Crawley's from Art of Fighting - which itself was a direct rip off of Guille's in SFII lol

To be fair most people would put Legend of Success Joe first. I just happen to have extra hate for Power Sucks 2.
I tried Legend of Success Joe at least a dozen times and turned it off within a minute or two.
When I first heard this title and the genre it's under, I was ecstatic. Neo-Geo boxing....awesome! God, even Buster Douglas's Boxing was better than this pile of shit.

I have tried soooo hard to make it through King of Monsters on multiple occasions... but sheer boredom prevents this from happening every single time.
Same here. I love the sprites and idea of a kaiju-themed wrestling game but can’t ever get through it.
As someone who can 1 credit clear King of the Monsters I can say there is a little more to it than just button mashing :). I loved the game as a kid as it was one of the only games i could 1CC. Basically to do it, i would pick Beetlemania and the trick is to nail the running attack. Once you get good at it you can connect the running attack (which flips the opponent into the air) every time. Then you walk over and do the neck choke thing that gives you a power up ball. Once you get enough of them your special charge up attack levels up, which you can then use to complete matches faster. Rinse, repeat, game beaten on 1 credit.
And that’s all well and good (thanks for the breakdown), I guess my question is is that any fun? KotM was always a game I played when waiting for something else to be available. Games like SF2, Sunsetriders, and even guilty pleasure T2 were all out around the same time. It just wasn’t ever a go to game for me I guess and it doesn’t seemed to have aged well. I know there are people who love the game and who are good at it, like yourself, but I just never attached to it.
@@ScarletSprites I think for the time it came out, I had never seen levels with so many destructible things in them in any other games. Nuances like how you could catch helicopters flying past, pickup tanks and throw them at the opponent - i just never saw that kind of environment detail before in a game so for me it was pretty cool. I'm obviously biased with nostalgia on this one so criticising it is ok, it's probably not aged very well. As a kid it was super exciting to have figured out a way to beat a game on one credit, it kind of felt like id conquered something big (when in reality no one really cared except me hah).
That’s cool and a fair synopsis. I do appreciate that just because I’m not feeling something doesn’t mean others aren’t. I knew this was the most controversial one on the list for sure. I like hearing you point out the subtleties and the things that made it great for you.

Great video, I grew up watching Neo Geo being played competitively on GamesMaster TV show (UK) in the early 90’s, I was in awe of the games, namely King Of Monsters, years later I finally got to play it. Totally agree with you.
It just hasn’t held up. It was borderline even for its day imo but it’s not aged well at all.
How your vids don't have more views is beyond me. Great calls, all. I thought I was alone on my lack of appreciation for King of the Monsters. Fight Fever flew under my radar. I have a majority of the SNK fighters but somehow I never encountered that one. Though provoking stuff like always.

Always love the Neo Geo vids! This is exactly why I curate my MVS collection... well that and money! Not every cart is gold... And for the record I love SVC Chaos!

What I should say about my least favorite Neo-Geo games:
I hated all of the SNES and Genesis ports of the classics, they belong on the PSX and Saturn despite their loading screens.
Yeah you’re probably right. I suppose it was a lot like forcing butchered versions onto the NES before. It was what most people had at the time and a way to make some money. Definitely better ports available going forward.
Of course, there are MANY worse or pointless games on the Neo Geo, just like on every other system. A high price doesn't mean a good game - "Riding Hero"is a great example, the racing track is so narrow, it's almost impossible to mess around with the other drivers...
Riding Hero doesn't even come off the shelf for me anymore. I tried but it just doesn't workout because if the tedious gameplay. It's almost impossible not to crash and when you're faced with road obstacles you have to slow down to a point that basically stops the bike. The real problem is turning in curves. You immediately go off the track when you reach high speeds. I get the real life physics but this is a game and the fun in games is being able to do things you normally can't do in real life so it fails miserably in that department.
Legend of Success Joe on the other hand I play that strictly for comedy reasons. The game literally keeps me laughing from start to finish. The fight animations inside the ring are beyond hilarious. The gameplay physics are so over the top inside the ring it becomes purely comical how you get punched particularly taking uppercuts and you will find yourself flying backwards into the ropes which is nothing unusual but it's particularly what happens after you hit the ropes. Now instead of just falling to the canvas you end up actually going straight up back first with your body laying out horizontally flying vertically into the air almost 8 feet high then you come crashing down into the canvas face first bouncing twice off the canvas.😳🤣😭😂😭🤣 What this game lacks in gameplay it makes up for it in comedy. If you look at it from that perspective you will have a good time with it. It's great for a laugh every once in a while so in that sense I find entertainment in it.👍😎👌
Now to be totally truthful here King Of The Monsters 1 should be scratched from this list and the game that should be put in its place is without question "Ganryu"!!!!! Ganryu is not a Neo Geo game. It's a Nintendo game masquerading as a Genesis game on the Neo Geo platform. It wouldn't even make a good Nintendo game that's how disappointing it is in all honesty. It could of been special if the developers had spent the necessary time to actually finish it but it's clear they gave up and scrapped that project before it even had a chance to become what it should of been. Even Neotropolis agreed when I discussed it with them regarding this game so don't be fooled. I'm a Neo collector and I had to let this one go once I got it. It wasn't worthy of being in any type of collection. I'd rather have Superman 64 than that game that should tell you something in itself. I repeat Do Not Buy this game because if you do you'll be truly sorry you did, You've Been Officially Warned!!!!!🙏

I disagree about powerspikes and King of monsters but definitely agree about the others. It's a shame we never got sprite scalers on the Neo other than the pathetic attempt with Riding Hero.

I both hate and love King of the Monsters. I pop it in every now and then and love it for about 10 minutes until I get really bored lol.
I recall giving it a pity quarter back in the day while I would wait for other machines. I can agree it’s better in 2P mode but honestly, it just doesn’t hold my interest for much more than ten minutes like you said.

Great list. My list mirrors yours pretty much - although, I'd drop King of the Monsters to slot six and put 3-Count-Bout in its place. I feel much the same way about it as you do with KOM. Funny that they're the two "wrestling" games.
3 Count Bout would probably crack my Top 10. If you want to depress yourself even further, play Slam Masters right before loading 3CB.

As someone who became a big Neo Geo fan last year, I agree with a lot of this list. King of the Monsters is a boring slog to play without a friend and Riding Hero is an interesting idea with lackluster execution, though I can at least see why others would find them appealing. But Fight Fever, Legend of Success Joe and Power Spikes II are simply embarrassing by Neo Geo standards (aside from the cool intros for the latter two)--they would barely pass as Genesis launch titles, much less titles for the gold standard of 2D arcade game hardware!
Ghost Pilots is a pretty BAD game too... It's hella boring and not even worth playing at all. I think they tried to copy-cat Raiden, but that true arcade classic just blows it away completely!
I'm surprised you didn't mention that you can barely see the ball sometimes in Power Spike 2 lol

King of Monsters can be amazing...but only with another person. The CPU AI on that game is way too easy and makes such stupid decisions that it's not even fun. The controls/mechanics could go MUCH farther (with the insane effects possible on the NG, why tf can't I shoot the nuke beam??!?) , but PVP it's a RIOT with a couple friends over and a couple beers down.

That viewpoint for the volleyball game Power Spikes is horrible. The only interesting thing is how it looks like it evolves into a futuristic version, at least cosmetically.
The robot league stuff is kind of cool. It’s unfortunately still based on the same gameplay of course though. Slop.
For every bad game I have found in the library there is many more hidden gems. Nightmare in the Dark was a real treat I never knew about until I played it in my own cabinet.

It’s truly terrible. It sounds like it was almost like an indie effort from Viccom, and the first (only?) Korean developed game. It’s so bland.
On your list I only got to play King of the Monsters actually in the Arcades back when the Neo Geo was new, and yeah, I think I only actually played it once, concluding "I won't be needing to play this ever again". There were certainly a few of the early titles I considered stinkers at the time that I've never really gone back to play, the games that practically every 4 or 6 slot cab had, like Crossed Swords, Top Players Golf and World Heroes. Not awful just not.... great. My local Neo cab ended up with Mslug, Soccer Brawl, Andro Dunos and Fatal Fury 2 so it weren't too bad in the end haha!
Agreed, I believe I only played it once or twice while waiting for something better to be available. It was hard to spend money on this when SF, Konami, and Midway games were on the floor.
Legend of Success Joe is a piss poor representation of the iconic Ashita no Joe manga and anime
I can only imagine that fans of the source material are pissed about how this mess turned out.
As a kid, before I knew what Neo Geo or an MVS was (to me it was just some multi-cade)... seeing King of Monsters was a trip. I was probably 13 or 14 years old and Street Fighter 2 was all the rage. New fighting games were popping on the market every day. A trip to the arcade after a month would net you 2-3 net new games NOBODY saw coming and only few heard about before seeing in person for the firs ttime. I remember seeing a crowd around King of Monsters and it looked AWESOME! We all loved wrestling, so we saw this game as a new take on a fighting game... where you played as monsters, and you could hurt the other monster with the environment. Concept? 10/10... Now... I would have been a TON less critical of this game back then. I don't think I actually ever played it then come to think of it, but I probably watched people playing it for over an hour (thats what broke kids did in arcades, they watched older kids with pockets full of quarters play games... kinda like today watching people play games on UA-cam). Anyway... I happen to own this one and it's sequel on the AES and it did NOT age well. While still cool in concept, the game play is super frustrating. Playing against a friend is far more enjoyable than the computer, but I wouldn't put a dime in this machine today if I saw it out in the wild. It's very disappointing.
As far as guesses on other disappointing launch titles, there are so many. Neo Geo had a pretty weak launch... but I would have to guess Super Spy. Another one I happen to own, and I probably would have thought this was really cool as a 14 year old kid, but never ran into it... its a bear to play now. The amount of quarters you would have to pump into this game just to wrap your head around it... it would be cheaper to buy it.
The strongest launch titles for me would have had to have been Sengoku/Ninja Combat (Didn't age particularly well... but again... beat um-ups were all the rage, and these had weapons galore and made Double Dragon look like an NES title from the evolution of graphics), NAM 1975 and Baseball Stars which at the time was the most impressive baseball game released to date. The concept of having a stand alone sports game in an arcade was something seldom attempted and rarely done well, and this one REALLY put the "arcade" into it. While it's not NBA Jam ground breaking... they made baseball something exciting to play in the arcade.
You nailed it, I was thinking of Super Spy. I recall thinking how cool it was in the arcade with its first person viewpoint. Only later on did I realize that powering through the game was a real chore. It’s boring as all hell and a real slog to get through.
The most interesting thing about the Neo Geo AES Console is that it allowed you to bring the arcade experience home sort of in it's debut. The actually was missing the biggest component that officially delivers the arcade experience in your home living room and that was the unibios chip. Without that chip and it simply means no unlimited quarters. Now you're bound by the same rules as any other home console system and are forced to complete much harder games that were purposely made this way to keep you broke and out of quarters.
The bottom line is you don't officially bring the arcade experience home unless you got access to unlimited quarters because the Neo Geo AES was made specifically for an over the top gaming entertainment experience in itself. If I didn't have that chip it's just no way a lot of the games made for the system would be possible to complete on standard limited lives. I also would not have attempted to build a library of games either for that reason. Sports games like Baseball Stars 1 and 2, Dunk Dream, Football Frenzy I don't need unlimited quarters for but it's plenty of games that will drain your lives faster than a stage 5 terminally ill cancer patient losing weight, I Promise You That!!!!!
Now as it pertains to games like KOM1 and KOM2 without unlimited quarters you'll be torching the skies long before your time especially in KOM2. Good luck on completing that game without unlimited quarters. The final boss Farmady is what you'll be faced with if you want to see the ending. Without unlimited quarters you're going to need a mothership from the movie Independence Day to destroy his fat AZZ and even then the target still remains.😩 Trust me when I say this is no exaggeration. Farmady is large and in charge and without unlimited quarters it's going to take the combined powers of the Autobots Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Ultra Magnus, and Metroplex. Youre also going to need to call Tony Stark and tell him to get the HulkBuster online to help out Prime and the others because Farmady is a true behemoth who was bred to destroy all life in the universe.😳 Personal prayers won't be enough in this epic showdown so rally all the troops and prepare yourself for the ultimate war of gargantuans.🙏

Big Tournament Golf (Neo Turf Masters) is without question the better of the two and probably in the running for a Top 3 all time best golf game. It’s very addicting.
Number 1 for me is probably Pleasure Goal, and I usually love arcade football/soccer games. Others that spring to mind are Puzzled, Super Spy, Gururin, and Ghost Pilots.
Ah yeah, that is an odd one. It was kind of expensive for a while (not sure if it still is). I expected an arcade soccer experience and, well, it is I suppose but it’s a little underwhelming.

I didn't know there was an Ashita no Joe game on the Neo Geo. For it to look and play so bad should be criminal, given the reputation of the Ashita no Joe series (I've never watched it all the way through, but I know it was at least very popular during its time)

@@sladejosephwilson2300 it's a close one! But I can occasionally beat a character or 2 on AOF2. I have a love/hate relationship with the AOF series anyway...I love the huge character sprites and the scaling effects etc. but they are super difficult games to play for the casual fighting game fan. I've seen people beat these games on 1CC though, which is crazy!

Neo Bomberman, after playing the 4 player arcade bomberman world and the excellent snes versions (superbomberman 3 is the best btw) it was a massive letdown.
That is one awesome hat. Makes me wanna say are you ok? Buster Wolf!!! On a side note a recent neo geo game I never had thought was good was street hoops. Gave it a shot and was actually decent. I agree on king of monsters. I recently got on a snk fighters kick. Loving playing Sam sho2, 4 and 5 special and garou and the endless versions of KOF.
I actually like Street Hoops too. I have that in my cab pretty regularly.

Great spot on episode. Very funny. I think King of the Monsters and 2 didn't age well. In the early 90s it looked cool especially seeing it on Nick Arcade. Looked better from a far.
You’re probably right. They’re much more glaring by today’s standards than they were back then.
KotM1 is a poor wrestling game, but KotM2 is a wresting/sides-scrolling beat-em-up which I actually enjoy.

@Markus Müller it has microswitches. The games are solid. Check out alien syndrome if you've never played it. Space Harrier, Virtua Fighter, Cotton, two Golden Axe games etc.... not a bad lineup to me. A small piece of sega arcade history. Also i skipped the controller and got the arcade stick instead. So i can play with 2 players using the unit as controller 1. And then use this super premium stick on my raspberry pi and odroid xu4 and maybe pc. That's the only thing i haven't gotten it working on yet. If i could just get one of my many Bluetooth or wired controllers to work with it that would be cool
@Markus Müller the buttons and stick don't feel cheap at all. Quite nicer than those on the neo geo mini. That thing has a better game lineup, yes but this thing is better in every other way. Hoping it gets hacked so i can add some capcom fighters
@Markus Müller i have it and can confirm it is sanwa or the greatest clones I've ever felt. On par or better than my mad katz TES + SV5 which comes all sanwa. Also i modded my 8bitdo sticks to sanwa parts so I'm familiar with the product. You are just talking with speculation and without hands-on experience. This stick is much better than anything SNK put out on their stick or on the mini devices. And the non clicky neo geo mini pad with non original button layout you're referring to SUCKS. Apart from no clicky stick, the analog stick has huge dead zones. I think you fail to realize this isn't an FPGA device aiming for original hardware perfect performance and is instead a TOY made by Sega TOYS. It's for people who enjoy fun products and have disposable income, two things you seem to have no sense of. It's a high quality product and better than the Neo Geo mini by a long shot, especially with the Neo Geo minis awful blurry hdmi out. I have and enjoy both though and don't spend hours leaving misinformed comments like you.

Agreed. Ninja Combat has surfaced a lot in the comments. I don’t think I realized how many people dislike that one as well. That and Burning Fight would definitely would make a Top Ten.
Watched to make sure Riding Hero was well represented on this list. That game is extra nefarious due to it actually looking like it could be a somehat enjoyable experience from the box art and image screenshots. How did they make motorcycles so boring?
Using graphics that were five years dated and making people play with a joystick instead of handlebars. It’s truly terrible from an arcade perspective. I get that the control thing was to keep the convenience of a non-dedicated cab but good lord, don’t make a driving game then.
So, Power Spikes II is a slightly modified port of Super Volley II on the Super Famicom. Video System took the lazy road and brought one of their home titles to the arcade for some quick bucks. It did pretty poorly in the arcade, so remaining Power Spikes II carts were used as factory conversions for Puzzle Bobble. Legitimate Puz Bob MVS carts still have some ROMs left over from Power Spikes II. It’s by far my least favorite Neo title. At least Success Joe has a tie to one of the largest early anime franchises.
I do recall hearing that about the carts being harvested for parts. Puzzle Bobble often confuses a lot of people because it’s both heavily pirated and legit versions are often Frankensteined like you mention. Good rundown on the game history, thanks!

I just never liked it. I thought it felt dated even when it first came out, especially considering what else was available in the arcade at the time. It hasn’t gotten better with age either imo.

Power Spikes II looks absolutely atrocious. I've played Baseball Stars, Super Sidekicks, League Bowling, hell even Neo Turf Masters! I actually like and enjoy the majority of sports games on the Neo Geo. Great video!
If this had been a Top Ten list I probably would have included 3 Count Bout. That’s another one that I think had so much potential and then just fell flat. It is admittedly better than KotM imo though.
I’m devastated that the universally known worst neogeo game is forever gonna be Legend of Success Joe. That game was the gateway for me watching the source material (Ashita no joe) and it became my favourite anime of all time. It’s only redeeming qualities in my opinion are the few nods it makes to the Anime in the sense that some enemies will fight the same way they do in the show. I can’t excuse anything else however, as much I love the show I can write essays on what’s wrong with this game.
I’ve never seen the anime, not really an anime guy, but I’d have to think if you were a fan of that series that this game twists the knife into you that much harder.
@@ScarletSprites That’s what’s interesting to me too cause I hated anime before watching that show and I still do to an extent but it was one of the few anime that I actually liked. And you totally got a point with the last sentence, going back to this game after watching the show was only more disappointing. Made me realize they crunched 100+ episodes of storyline into a shitty beat em up with 5 stages that last no longer then a minute.
That Power Spike game reminds me a lot of Super Volleyball on the Genesis. Same developers, same flat playfield, same camera perspective that makes the position of the ball a mystery until it's already past your players. Crap, crap, megacrap!

@@ScarletSprites Thanks for pointing me to the team. The ASP works as an arcade stick on my pc still but it won't boot the built-in menu so I can't factory reset unfortunately. I'm guessing something on my flash drive got borked? Anyways, maybe the team can help me "un-brick" it somehow so thanks again for the direction!

Totally agree with your list, I’d consider football frenzy and 3 count blunt for much of the disdain you have for power spikes ii. Great concept, graphics even but the gameplay/camera is ridiculous and makes them almost unplayable
I’m not a fan of 3 Count Bout either. That’s definitely in my Top 10. Play Slam Masters and then load 3CB and see how disappointed you are. It’s painful.

The only redeeming part of legend of success Joe is when the screen pans up to show the look on your trainer's face when you lose. That's about it.

King of the Monsters 2 I liked... I guess I didn't play enough of the first one and always played the sequel instead.

Man I love SVC chaos. What's wrong with people? I also like Power spikes but only on the TG16 at a $20 price point(super volleyball). So yeah, definitely not a neogeo caliber game.
I’ve always enjoyed SVC Chaos. It’s one of those things that maybe I enjoy so I look past the flaws more than I should. I don’t think I’ve ever played Volleyball on TG16, I’ll have to check it out!

The first Power Spike was incredibly common in my area, and I bet all over Europe. It was literally everywhere (Edit: the really popular one was most likely the prequel Super Volleyball, which would make Power Spikes II the third in the series..they are very similar so i mixed them up). And to me it played like a turd as well but for some reason people kept putting coins in it. A ton of sports games that today are looked down if not ignored, at the time made a ton of cash (eg: Tecmo World Cup).
I’ve never played the original. Like a sadist, I wondered after making this video if I should hunt it down just to see what the original was like.
@@ScarletSprites The original game Super Volleyball was relevant for its time when it was released by Video System to the arcade in 1989. It was later ported to the TG-16 and Genesis and I actually enjoy it. Regardless of the camera angle, it’s a much better game than Volleyball for NES if you learn how to execute all the commands and moves. The issue with Power Spikes I and II is that they’re both irrelevant sequels that didn’t significantly improved in gameplay or graphics when compared to the original game even though they’re using more capable hardware.
I played a lot of Super Volleyball and Tecmo World Cup in the arcade back in the early 90s. Fun times!

I wouldn't say King of Monsters is a "good game".. but top 5 worst? Nah, no way. It was at least polular enough to warrant a sequel. Again.. not saying it blows my socks off but if you like wrestling or "classic" Godzilla or Gamera movies .. it's worth a go. I'd certainly play it any damn day over Blues Journey.
I think for me it’s just about the potential that was there that just didn’t come to full fruition. I get where you’re coming from and it was relatively still early in the Neo’s life cycle so some grace can be granted. I just can remember playing it once or twice while waiting for other machines to open and it was always the backup to SF, Sunsetriders, or even something like T2. It was never good enough to stand on its own against games like that on the floor. I also became heavily biased a few years later and compared any arcade wrestling game to Slam Masters. I feel like that was 2D wrestling done right.
@@ScarletSprites it surely needed some workshopping. KOM 2 wasnt all that much better but at least the graphics were an improvement. Maybe it needed one more iteration to work out the bugs. Hell, King of Fighters didnt hit its stride til the 96 version.

I'm not agree with Riding Hero. The story mode is BETTER that same option found on the Sega Genesis "Super Hang-on". I suggest try story mode in Riding Hero, but you have to be be very patience and must have memory card working; the end will surprise you.

I actually bought the console in the summer of '92, and I was rarely disappointed with the games I bought (which, fwiw, were mostly used and/or trade-ins).
I dodged some bullets by sampling a good many NG titles at the local arcade. For example, I thought the first World Heroes game was pure garbage. The sequel was still quite weak, but the 2.5 version turned out to be great fun...World Heroes Perfect, I think?

Just want to back you up on the SVC Chaos thing. Such a fun game; I’ll never understand the hate it gets from some. To add one game to your list - Top Player’s Golf. I especially hate TPG because the powers that be keep including it n modern bundles instead of the vastly superior Neo Turf Masters.

TPG does indeed suck. I can’t imagine why Neo Turf Masters keeps being supplanted in place of it unless there is some licensing deal somewhere else. It’s really strange. No one would opt to play TPG over Turf Masters.
The reasons why SVC Chaos had mixed views:
• The graphics of the stages felt bland, rushed, and lacking of many colors and cameo appearances.
• There are no Groove-systems, no sub-systems, no point-systems, and no 3-on-3 team battles.
• Compared to Capcom vs. SNK 2: The roster is too 1998-ish rather than 2003-ish; some of the fighters such as Zero, Mars People, and Tessa felt too out-of-place; and token fighters such as Sakura, Haohmaru, and Rock were missing.
In conclusion:
SVC Chaos isn’t bad,
it’s just lackluster.
@@ScarletSprites It IS a licensing issue, but not in a "deal" sense. Augusta National sued over the use of "Masters" in relation to a golf-related product and won. This is why the ACA NeoGeo release was edited to have the Japanese name, "Big Tournament Golf" even in Western regions.

Personally, I think that Ninja Combat is worse than King of The Monsters. I personally didn’t mind King of The Monsters-especially considering that it can be fun with other players (Team-Up ala what would be used in Fatal Fury, and even Player Vs. Player)-its better than the SNES and Genesis versions THAT much is for certain... its more complete. The music is... okay with the sole exception being Astro Guy’s theme; but in the end, I don’t think King of the Monsters is THAT bad... but I’d be lying if I said that the game doesn’t drag toward the end where you have to fight the monsters again.
Ninja Combat is just painful. It’s really a flawed game-the worst of ADK’s initial first-three games; no question about it. Magician Lord may be brutally difficult, yet it showcased the hardware at the time to introduce players to what the system was all about. Blue’s Journey is WAY too easy... but it had SOMETHING with the different routes you can take to spice things up. Ninja Combat on the other hand, no. This game isn’t EVEN the remote definition of the word “Fun”. Doesn’t matter if you’re Joe, Hyabusa, Musashi, Kagerow, or Gembu... the best part of the game? The Final Boss, and the ending itself-not because of “the game being almost over” but Genyosai’s final form is AT LEAST the closest to what the game could have and SHOULD have been. Talk about too little, too late. Throughout playing that stupid game, it felt like winning the lotto after being shot repeatedly to death. And the ending song is not that bad, either... its just baffling how this game made it past Arcade Playtesting at all. What is most intriguing about this game is the unused sounds. It uses Magician Lord’s Amphibitron (Frog Warrior) croaks in the game’s files, alongside MANY unused voice samples. It’s like they took Magician Lord’s source code, and had little-to-no idea of how to make a Beat-Em-Up. Ninja Combat IS a waste of a good engine.
You’re not the first to mention Ninja Combat. I’d totally agree. It’s premise is prime for an easy win, even if it’s generic. Somehow they managed to mess up something that should have been an average but safe arcade game. Brutal.
Take a look at what SNK made in the years PRIOR TO the Neo Geo… the vast majority of their arcade games were just astoundingly awful…
Oh for sure, there are some real bad games in that era. Even as an SNK/arcade guy I’ve passed on opportunities to pick up boards and systems that were relatively cheap.
Just like Taito prior to Bubble Bobble. Maybe the only arcade developer who was consistently good was Toaplan (if you ignore their three mahjong games) but that's just my opinion...

Even the worst game looks ok to me. Every single Neo Geo game was designed for arcade play so a baseline of quality is always there. I could have sworn there were some questionable puzzle games. But there are less than 100 games in the new geo anyway iirc. So every single game had care and attention.

Even though SvChoas isn't my favorite because of the bad ai, the underwhelming game play, and the weird sound effects. The rest of the game is good. The roster, the music, levels, the arcade mode, and the multi-player were all good. I also didn't love CvS2 as much as the average consumer but still enjoyed it enough.
Right! I’m not arguing it’s technically perfect, just that there is still some fun to be had with it. The roster and backgrounds are great like you mention.

@TrueSinister To me both of snk's and capcom's cross over games were not ideal games. But still enjoyable with their own strengths and weaknesses. As far backgrounds are concerned I will take svchoas backgrounds over cvs2 backgrounds. Except cvs1 backgrounds because they were beautiful. Also the character sprites mesh well together in svchaos.
@TrueSinister The fact that both companies decided to included other characters from each other series instead of copying and pasting each others rosters was one of the best things about these cross overs. I loved seeing neglected characters get some love and it's a once in a life time thing. Which makes it more special.
