Well here we are! It's Neo Geo series time! Because damn it...it's my favorite retro gaming platform of all time and I've been collecting for the Neo Geo AES for years! As far as retrogaming collecting goes...it's not cheap, but don't forget...you can always get the 1:1 experience on MiSTer FPGA, which is how I am playing this now!
Patreon Thanks : Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kuranghi, Jason Hixon, Sam Matthews, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Eric Walklet, J Z, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane, tobemorecrazy, Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holder Schmidt, Tim Lehner, matschmonster, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Sunder Raj and Dorfus!
Up first on Neo Nostalgia; we've gotta talk about the hardware and the history of the Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD...because in retro games history how often does an arcade pcb just BECOME a console with basically zero compromises? Once...with SNK of course! The Neo Geo is a 2D fighting game fans dream...but what makes it so?
We will talk about the Neo Geo AES, the Neo Geo CD Front Loader, the Neo Geo CDZ as well as the Neo Geo Games, arcade sticks and more!
Sure it may be a bit ridiculous to have a video game collection for Neo Geo when MiSTer FPGA and the Neo Geo core work basically 1:1 with original hardware...but I never said I was a reasonable person!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

My dad almost got me one as a kid, it was the best thing at the time. I remember my parents sort of bickering in front of me about it.
I love the handheld, that I do have. I never sadly got the home system, just a Neo Geo X. Which I also love, but I know it's emulation. =)
Haha sounds like my dad. And then mom comes in and kills the fun
Alright! It;s Mike. What's new with you bro? Glad to see you VGE's channel. 8^)
Anthony..
Awesome video and so happy to see a series of NEO GEO videos on your channel!
I recently bought Waku Waku 7 on the AES, so I've been playing tons of that!
That couldn’t have been cheap lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica Not cheap, no. But it was a very good deal and way below the current market price. Couldn't resist it. I'll just sell a few N64 games to get the money back lol
Nothing wrong with that!
neo geo such a legendary arcade style console with so many great games .. such a blessing now that mister can run neo geo properly
Yes Neo Geo in MiSTer is 1:1 perfect
@@VideoGameEsoterica it does make it way easier to play as playing on pc either have to rely on mame or neo geo emulator which can be a bit dated
I agree. MiSTer is fast and easy
Now THIS is what I call a video VGE,
What a fantastic way to start your new series with Neo-Geo. I absolutely love it bro. The moment you started speaking, we as your viewers know this was going to be more than just another fun and cool video bro. Excellent work. This made my day for sure. Best Neo-Geo discussion and the history of the units and games in a long time.
Also VGE, thank you so much for sharing this on the Neo-Geo thread for others to benefit and enjoy. We really appreciate it and always in the mood to see you in action on AtariAge for sure.
Always a pleasure to stop by to see your content VGE. Keep up the great work you always do for us bro. 8^)
Anthony..
I had a SLIGHT feeling you’d like this one haha. Plenty more coming!
Thank you for this series. I am a huge fan of the Neo Geo as well. I had a friend whose parents bought one for him for Christmas 1993. I have had a lot of experience with it since then and now own an AES and front loader CD as well (that is currently not working lol). My favorite game for this system is a really tough question to answer. I would have to go with KoF 2002.SVC Chaos would be second and Neo Turf Masters would be right behind that.
2002 is my personal fav KOF but probably because it’s the first KOF I ever owned on AES
@@VideoGameEsoterica I bought the Dreamcast version only released in Japan back in 2003 and have loved it ever since. It has an awesome roster.
One of the biggest rosters too
I love NeoGeo! There were ads in magazines for it, but I never saw one in reallife so it always remained a mysterious piece of hardware. The first AES I’ve ever seen in real life is the one I bought a few years ago. I did consolize an MVS though to not entirely drain my bank 😂
haha gotta protect the bank account when you get to Neo Geo stuff!
Glad to see you focusing more on the NeoGeo :) As for favourites it'S very hard to say: I've been playing the NeoGeo for 25 years now. Top Hunter, Metal Slug, samurai shodown, kizuna encounter, King of the Monsters 2, Soccer Brawl, Windajmmers, Last-Resort and Art of Fighting 2 are all games that I come back over and over. I have spent more time playing the NeoGeo AES than any other machine by far. I don't think that it's comparable to anything else and it will no doubt maintain its fans well into the future.
Yes I can’t imagine Neo Geo ever becoming “uninteresting” to retro gamers. Certainly hasn’t to me
This is great man. I've been a huge Neo Geo fan since I was a teenager. Played almost all of the library and still play the games now a days in fact I just recently got the Samurai Showdown neo geo collection for switch. It's hard to say my #1 favorite neo geo title because there's so many good ones to play
Picking a fav is hard unless you are me...Matrimelee all day!
One of the best retro gaming channels. Love your stuff.
Thanks! Genuinely appreciate that!
This is going to be an amazing series (as always). The first time I played a Neo Geo game was at a truck stop which had 2020 Super Baseball (I don't recall what other games the cab might have had, but I only had time to play 2020), and I was in love. And, once I got a chance to play Samurai Shodown repeatedly, well, I knew the Neo Geo was absolutely something special. Such an iconic system with an amazing library of games. I still have a special place for 2020 Super Baseball in my heart, though my top 5 favorite Neo Geo games are Samurai Shodown II, Fatal Fury 3, Neo Turf Masters, Mark of the Wolves, and Baseball Stars 2 though I love plenty of others. Do you remember which Neo Geo game you played first, Anthony?
A truck stop eh? That’s a first I’ve heard that. I first saw it at a pizza shop in my home town. Had Fatal Fury on it
Perfect timing... just moved to Japan for work and recently unpacked my AES (and just picked up Stakes Winner 2 at Mandrake Complex). Looking forward to your upcoming deep dives!
Ooh fun. Plenty of deep dives coming!
I need to add a Stakes Winner to my collection because why not
@@VideoGameEsoterica it's not terribly fun but it's a charming change of pace from all the fighting 😮💨🐴
Oh you mean the horses don’t go 1v1 Garou style? Lolol
You got it good, japanese Neo Geo games are so cheap compared to american copies lol.
When I would visit arcades, the Neo Geo was the first sytstem I looked for. And if they had Windjammers or burning fight I would be a happy kid. But wind jammers was my favorite.
If you like windjammers you just might like one of the episodes in the series coming up ;)
For some reason I've been on a neo geo fighter tear lately. I love the animation style so nostalgic
For some reason = because their fighting games are straight up classics that’s why :)
You had to be dedicated with big pockets to be an AES true believer!!
I remember being sat there with my early collection up to super spy and then everything went dead for a little while…..
Thought that was it!!, the end of this console then one day what seemed like months and months later was in a test site for snk and my mate and I couldn’t believe they had 3 new titles.😮
Eight Man, Robo Army & Fatal Fury!!😮❤
The restart of the Neo Geo was here and after that it never stopped!!👏👏😎
Such an amazing console from its looks and quality to its performance!!👌
It was a fun time. It’s still fun to think an arcade board was released as a console with no cuts to the hardware
It can address up to 330 megabits (41.25 megabytes) of cartridge ROM data, WITHOUT using bank switching in the cartridge. You said WITH. No biggie. Thanks for the video!
Noted. Misspoke
I bought a CDZ a few months ago, slowly growing my Collection. Love it!
It’s a fun console to collect for
Great video! Ive got the same 3 consoles except my CD is a top loader of course because they are much easier to find. I actually got it for free because in the mid 2000s, people couldn't give them away let alone sell them. There's a fix for the later serial revision AES jailbars on RGB issue. I did it and it looks incredible. You do sacrifice composite input in the fix but I would never use composite on a Neo Geo unless I had no other options. It's cool to see videos from other people who collect and play SNK hardware. Thank you! I couldn't tell you what my favorite Neo Geo game is but I really love the shmups on it!
Yes Neo Geo CD units used to be basically free. Not any longer. Nothing Neo Geo will ever be cheap any more
I may mod my RGB one day but I kind of like the old school "modded in the early 2000s" aesthetic of it
@@VideoGameEsoterica Thats %100 percent truth. If you didn't get into SNK early on, sadly you missed out. I'm seeing standard Neo Geo CD top loaders at well over $300! I'm considering selling mine to buy another AES game lol.
I sold mine for like $125 boxed a long time ago
@@VideoGameEsoterica I think it's time to let mine go. I mostly play my AES and CDZ. I think maybe I can get past the temptation to SD mod it 😆
Hype!!!
Looking forward to the rest of the series my guy!
so am I. Fingers crossed it does well! I need a hit
@@VideoGameEsoterica You've been super slept on, just keep putting in that work man.
haha I wont stop as long as I am entertaining myself
just do me a favor and go tell 20K friends to sub hahaha
@Video Game Esoterica I'll keep blasting your updates in my Discords Boss, that next 20k is gonna come a lot easier than the first 20k 🤙
Holy shit. I didn't realize the front loader CD was so big!
Just got to the part where you mentioned the size. I am in awe of that chonker.
MASSIVE
What modifications need to be made to the CDZ to keep it from overheating?
I will show it in another video coming soon in depth but…pull the bottom RF shield out
I own exactly three games on AES and it’s probably all I will ever own
I am gonna guess one is Fatal Fury Special
Did I miss a link somewhere to that RGB quality check?
No I probably forgot it
I love Neo Geo. I've been tempted to get an MVS and supergun and turn my foot locker into a portable arcade box.
I mean that doesnt sound like a BAD idea
I love my Neo Geo - I'm so looking forward to this series AND best of all, it's running into December too - HELL YES!! This is going to be a fantastic ride.
Ironically, I wasn't really sold on the Neo Geo until ports began turning up on the SEGA Saturn - starting with The King of Fighters '95 (which got a UK release) which completely blew me away !! I started collecting SNK hardware seriousy in 2014, after a lucky find of a VERY cheap Neo Geo CD toploader locally along with a few games. These days I'm all in with my Neo Geo CD, AES, MVS, Hyper Neo Geo 64 and Neo Geo pocket color. (I'll try not to ramble too much as this series goes on, but it'll be tough).
Also - Not biased. 😉
Hard to believe you weren’t sold considering your username haha. How’s your Hyper collection going?
Oh man! it's 8BitSnkBoy. Good to see you again bro. Long time no see. Hope all is well and having fun playing Neo-Geo bro. 8^)
Anthony..
Gangs all here
@@VideoGameEsoterica I KNOW Right!!? I've currently stalled with my hyper 64 collection at the moment - but I'm pretty addicted to Samurai Shodown 64 though, so it's all good.
I almost picked a Beast Busters board and cart for a reasonable price a few years back, but I didn't have the confidence to sort out something like that back then (If I'd have seen your video I'd probably have gone for it). Sadly, I doubt I'll ever see one for that kind of price again though - especially with the guns included.
Hey @@Charlie-Cat. I regularly see you in the comments of many of the Neo Geo related videos I watch. Still having a great time over here thanks buddy. Keep up the great work, my friend. 👍
Frontloader with furrteks ODE is a game changer
I may do that to this one once I get it working
Neo Geo is my personal favourite in my collection and speciality 😎
Same. It will always take the top spot
Great job 👏🏽
Appreciate that!
Played a lot of NG CD back in the 90s. A friend bought one bc he is a fighting games pro and kof95 had much more depth than sf2 at the time. The best 16 bit (24bit;) console there is. Legendary line up of arcade games. Enjoying NG goodness on my MiSTer and NG Mini.
95 was a fun one. Probably doesn’t get as much play as the later games (outside 2001 which is kinda bad)
Excited for this series considering I originally found the channel watching the bootleg cart video. I'm not sure what my favorite game on the system is, but lately I have put a ton of time into Xeno Crisis on my OMVS
Oh the how to spot a boot video? Wow that was a long time ago now
@@VideoGameEsoterica They very one, definitely helped kickstart my own Neo Geo hardware adventure.
Haha I apologize for the money you’ve spent due to that video 😂
@@VideoGameEsoterica Worth it 🤣
Yeah it is!
Im so glad I didnt get myself the console and got a cabinet instead. Some of those AES prices make Cave games look like a Chicken McNugget.
McNuggets reference for the win!
Hello could you tell me does neo geo support stereo sound?
AES does from the headphone Jack
Front loading is a real beast. Not as atari 5200 but... very closed. I remember from my old magazine of 90 era... neo geo was a dream console. Not for all. Magician lord and nam 1975 wete the first games here in italy.
The front loader is wildly massive. Almost comically so
I really hate it, that to this date no one ever cloned that clicky thumbstick for other controllers. Even SNK dropped it in their USB versions of that controller. And I really was hoping for them to have it, so I could use it for other games as well. Six button layout would be nice as well - so maybe a Saturn controller with the clicky SNK stick would be the best retro controller ever.
That would be great. The clicky thumb stick is just the absolute best for 2D games
I have a top loader (not the Z) and I added a region switch for language selection to the back. Seeing as the CD games generally carry both NA and JP dialog and region aspects. I recently got the JP AES as well and one of those 161-1 carts. sure some of the games are janky but the legit ones play great.
I owned a top loader for forever boxed and matching serials but I sold it to someone who really wanted one. So the CDZ works for me (and this front loader once I get it running)
Actually VGE if you ever get the chance I'd reccomend at least on MVS cart for your collection even if you dont have a system to play it on. They are as satisfying as the AES carts and even one of the sports titles would be super cheap. Well worth having one
Oh I’m sure one day I’ll do it
God I love the neo geo. Used to have a decent AES collection but downsized to a multicart on mvs and aes after a move. Maybe one day I’ll get more things, but for now it’s acceptable. Happily got a hyper 64 with fatal fury and Buriki one though.
Buriki One is a total hidden gem and I love my copy
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah I really lucked out. I bought an untested copy for $80 and it works great!
they are built like tanks so not surprised it worked. I have all seven Hyper games in the closet next to me
Hi Evan. Good to see you again bro. Glad you still enjoying Neo-Geo and stopping by to see videos of it bro. 8^)
Anthony...
Yeah the same fixes that work for the Sega CD model 1 work on the Neo Geo CD as well.
In this instance I’m still not sure what is wrong
@@VideoGameEsoterica Maybe you need to do the something to the two switchs in the CD unit. Like this: ua-cam.com/video/MKYV0fLXfGY/v-deo.html
P.S. He says you can't open the switch but you can do it, once open you can fix it easy.
Not a bad idea but I should still get a image on screen if that was the issue
@@VideoGameEsoterica Oh your not getting video at all, yeah the fix I'm thinking of are mostly just for the CD drive itself.
Yeah I have no signal sadly
could be cool an AES - CD game comparison. CD used to fail with many bugs where AES for obvious reasont doesent.
That’s a really good idea actually
Neo Geo is life :D
100%
I love how big the OG CD was.
IS there an ODE mode? For it
There is a SD loaded for front and top loader yes

I can’t think today lol. I have a snes video tomorrow
Yowza - that KOF collection cost you a pretty penny :) I love NEO GEO. Eveytime I see that logo I hear da da da dummmmm, da da da dummmm.
Honestly I finished the KOF full set maybe 8 years ago so while they weren’t giving them away it certainly was much less than current day values
@@VideoGameEsoterica Glad to hear it. Blimey - even MOTW is crazy just on its own now.
Yes and that’s not even considered an “expensive” game
I had no idea how busted SVC Chaos was until I started playing against people on fightcade. I'll probably never own a Neo Geo of my own. I had a chance to 20 years ago and I was talked into going to a Florida trip instead...the trip from hell.
What I do have are Neo Geo ports on just about every console I own. Some of those PS2 collections are rough, they in 480i and it shows. But I have a USB AES Stick for PS3 I can use with a Brook adapter on PS2 so...
Neo Geo vs Florida...Neo Geo wins every time!
It should have on that occasion too. It was going to be an AVS with MVS adapter. I almost got a consolzed MVS over the summer but it was still an expensive proposition. The MISTer core will probably be my means of playing. I'll have to show you the Neo Geo CD themed stick mod I did.
MiSTer should really be how everyone plays at this point
That'll probably be how I do it. Neo4all on Dreamcast does a good job emulating Neo CD. If the PS2 collections could boot to 240p that'd be another matter altogether.
Final Burn Neo is good too
90s kids know that these cases look like the old porn VHS's. Different content but just as arousing lol. Happy new year everyone! ✌
🤣
The answer is (probably) Metal Slug series.
Always a good choice
CDZ for the win! 💿
I love the console. Looks good, loads faster!
Love the Neo Geo. I always wanted one when I was a kid back in the 90s, but that price was just too much. More so the price of the games than the price of the console itself honestly. If the games were priced in line with other consoles at the time, I actually could have gotten one.
I did too. Of course I never got one. But as soon as I became an “adult” (are we ever truly adults? I’m not) and I could make my own decisions…started collecting Neo Geo haha. So I’ve been getting games for maybe 15 years now
NEO GEO CD CORE WHEN?
Fingers crossed. It is def possible
Too rich for my blood but I love it on mister
I really just tell everyone NOT to collect for Neo Geo but just use MiSTer. The smart move (I am not smart lolol)
The big question is- is your aes headphone jack flipped? Also- seriously ballsy to say “value for money” while looking at SvC.
lol well it was value for money when I bought it. No my headphone jack is correct
I mean I bought that Loopy, had it shipped from Japan and then basically gave it to you after making like a large pizzas worth of ad revenue from the video. Does that sound like I understand the value of money?
@@VideoGameEsoterica Shit yeah that all makes sense. I'm gonna scrounge around the house now and see if I can find anything I can sell you for a lot.
one of those cabs of yours
@@VideoGameEsoterica You had your chance to steal one
Is it worthwhile to buy an AES nowadays? I mean we all got the games available to play on emulators, MiSTer... So why put up with 30 year old hardware? It's sexy though...
Sure. You have more money than common sense lol. No I’d play on MiSTer. Because unless you want to start dropping $$$ on AES carts you’d be better off on MiSTer since an AES with a multi cart = MiSTer anyway
😂 I could never imagine giving some fool with a ridiculous price my money for a dead system that's been dead for decades. So yep emulation for me every time. The neo geo does look really cool though with those insanely large cartridges.
We all have our own ways we needlessly waste money lol. Plus most of these have been with me for a very long time
@@VideoGameEsoterica too true. I've wasted stupid amounts of money games and ssds alone lol. Hard to believe still I even buy them at all. Neo geo is definitely a big time classic so anywhere that has emulators I put the entire set on. There's still something that looks so great about these games even beautiful 3d games and it's always the amount of animations going on.
They will never not look good. They age gracefully
So this is where our money goes 😂
Dunno what you are talking about....
@@VideoGameEsoterica uhhuh
..................shhhh
I have to disagree with you on the controller. While I appreciate the clickiness of the joystick, that sucker is prone to failure! They're only good for so many hours and then no matter how much you try and clean the switches, they just don't work. In comparison, all other original controller joysticks I have (except for N64) are still going strong.
I swap parts in them. So I guess I’ve improved the wheel sort of speak
You got some hairy arms, mate!
Italian 😂
THIRSTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol
Soft boxes 100%.
Both are fun but finding decent condition soft boxes can be a chore
It’s obsolete now as the mister plays even better
Doesn't mean I still dont love it lol
Not all mister cores are perfect. I measured input lag on neo geo mister core a few weeks ago and metal slug is 7 frames lag. The pcb is 4 frames. Groovymame with framedelay 6 is 5 frames. For neo geo you are best with original hardware followed by groovymame.
I mean this nicely but that’s above the amount of lag that MiSTer has on a CRT with a hard wired controller. What is your setup?
@@VideoGameEsoterica The metal slug game itself has that amount of input lag on the button 1 press. Press the button and it is 4 frames before the gun raises and the shot is fired. I tested it on a crt with slow motion camera (you see each frame drawing top to bottom on the slow mo).
Some games have just one frame like the pcb of bad dudes. Mister and groovymame measured 2 frames for that one. Neo geo was off more than others.
I’ll ask around on this but hard wired I was not able to see any additional lag with my cameras and they also go high speed. So I’m wondering if your controller is introducing latency? They are using MiSTer at tournaments for Neo Geo now
I never fully understood the appeal of the Neo Geo. Unless you’re HUGE into fighting games and have a DEEP pocket…this system (imo) sucked!
Sucked? Those are fighting words!
Or should I say fighting GAME words
