Crab people killed me lol.🤣
Please don't take as long a hiatus from Neo Geo Generation! This is why I am subscribed to this channel.
The PC-88 PC-98 stuff is dope too but i do like Neo Geo stuff
FUCK YES!!!! THE NEO GEO GENERATION RETURNS!!
Yes! I've been waiting for this episode for the longest time! Oh, and what's interesting is that Magician Lord's story takes place 100 years before the events of Crossed Swords. The manual to Crossed Swords even states that Gadasis (Cadasis from Magician Lord) would become the kingdom of Belkana. Interestingly, the game also has similar mechanics that would be used in the Mario & Luigi RPGs-i.e. the dodging maneuver when anticipating enemy attack!
Oh MAN, this is a great game. Crossed Swords II is criminally limited to the Neo-Geo CD but it's a worthy sequel.
I love the Neogeo series. One of my fav systems
"Crossed Blades" might have been a more appropriate title, seeing as the hero and enemies wield more than swords such as axes and maces. Brilliant gameplay that really tests your timing and skill. I wish I could see more lore in this game and find out more about the rat-folk, the multitude of dark knights you fight and the locations that you visit.
Yes. Also, crossing swords is frowned upon for good reason 👍
Good to know there will be an episode on the CD only sequel. Also I'm pretty sure that wasn't a "wink" from the king, it was more of a raised eyebrow.
No choice. If I'm going to hit all the NGH numbers, I'll have to cover the CD exclusives. To that end, I've already been covering unreleased games.
lol about the wink.
This game is the specific reason I bought a memory card. The credit limit on AES makes it nigh impossible without one. I've finished it on my MVS cabinet with my son as well, but it does drag on when done in a single sitting. Like Super Spy, the combat can feel reminiscent of Punch out with its block and counter gameplay and combo patterns to watch for each enemy.
Thanks for another awesome retrospective!
Glad to see this series return. This game looks like something I'd have played the hell out of as a kid.
Not too late. Very easy to emulate.
i don't know much about neo geo so i like every one of these episodes
Finally, a new episode of the best ever neo geo documentary series in yt
Love this game!
In fact-- A PC98-inpsired game I've been developing, has combat based on Crossed Swords! It leans a little into Punch Out, as well.
It's a first-person dungeon crawler like Dungeon Master, with the player becoming locked in place, during monster encounters.
You're making a PC-98 inspired game? - Mr. Jakes
@@BasementBrothers Yeah, my game is limited to a 640x480 resolution, with only 16 colors.
I had originally experimented with using 640x400, but decided to bump it up to use the extra space seen on MS-DOS, and later PC98 models.
A couple of eroge were ported to MS-DOS, using the larger screen size.
I'm using a global color palette, like Tiare's visual novels, just so I don't have to juggle colors around...
Rusty on PC-98 is just ridiculous. I can't believe it never made it to PC Engine (CD)! Such a sweetass game with a bangin female protag 😍👍
Great to see the series back Alec. I love Crossed Swords. Still enjoy playing this on te Neo-Geo after all these years bro. 8^)
Anthony..
Don’t call it a come back but it’s great to see you back with this series.. Neo Geo is forever!
I hope you're not tired of all the praise for your videos. Because here is some more. Welcome back.
It's certainly a lot more colorful than The Super Spy, and a bit less monotonous, with only a limited set number of enemies to fight instead of an endless hoard from the former.
The key to the game is patience and quick reaction, recognize the battle animation of each enemy's high and low attacks and react swiftly to it. A quick note, the enemy is defenseless when they're preparing to strike, so a bold maneuver is to forgo blocking and instead seize the opening and attack, course if you miss you'll end up getting hit instead, a risky move.
One thing I noticed is that if you block high or low continuously without change, they'll attack with the stance you're not guarding from. For example, if you were to block low, the enemy will likely use high attack, and since the animation for it takes a bit longer to execute than low attack, you can easily see it coming and shift the shield up to block it. In other words, bait them into using a telegraphed attack that's easy to block.
This game seems fascinating; I never really knew much of anything about it before now. Thank you for making this video!
Glad to see a new episode in the Neo Geo series. Thanks for uploading these!
Thanks!
I’ve been waiting for this!!
This is one of my favourites! I played a lot of it when my local arcade had it. Never managed to beat it 😅
oh yeees! i missed those neo geo reviews so much
oh wow. new neo geo Basement Bros! let me get some popcorn.
This one looks epic!
This game and it's sequel are amazing in my opinion.
Great to see another Neo Geo Generation video! I have a soft spot for this game even though I find it frustrating. I just love the idea and aesthetics so much.
Everybody drop what you're doing, Neo-Alec just dropped a new video!
I'm new to your channel. I really enjoyed your review of this game although I never played it. You were very thorough in your analysis and I really appreciate you reviewing Neo Geo games in particular since there's just not a whole lot of Neo Geo related content online. Thanks! Subscribed.
Fantasy is my favorite genre, so when I found this game through the emulation scene in the early 2000s it was love at first sight. Classic.
Fantasy is not a genre. It's an aesthetic
I loved crossed swords. The second one to me wasn’t quite as good, but it may just be a nostalgia factor.
I loved this game, me and my little bro played this a ton. Thanks for another cool vid guys
I know this will be a good one. I own this one on AES and CD (along with Croased Swords II)
I was just halfway through watching this series again when you uploaded this, nice! I was a little worried you'd dropped it.
Love this series, there's something about the games on the Neo-Geo that had such a great aesthetic sense, even when they missed on the gameplay front.
I look forward to you covering Crossed Swords 2 on NGCD. How about the few other NGCD-exclusives like Ironclad and SamSho RPG? I love these NeoGeo, per-game videos! I can't wait for you to start covering the King of Fighters series. Thank you and the other Basement Bros 👍
No choice. If I'm going to hit all the NGH numbers, I'll have to cover the CD exclusives. To that end, I've already been covering unreleased games.
@@khalismur They probably meant exclusive within the Neo Geo universe (no cartridge). I make the same distinction all the time myself.
I'm just surprised ADK decided to make the sequel for the Neo Geo CD only.
The streams you guys did a few weeks ago was really nice, are you planning any more? Also, really happy to see this series return.
YES!! I was wondering when the next one was coming out!
Thanks for episode, Next video looking forwards for review ( Crossed Swords II ) on NEO-GEO CDZ, Please..👍🏻
these graphics are amazing!
when i was younger this was one of three games one of my friends had for his Neo and we played it to the point of mastery... so many fond memories of this game!!! great video and keep it up!
Love your channel to death, so dope.
I always digg ur videos! Yea, as long as Ive been seeing crossed swords in my emulation collection, I've never been compelled to play it. At all. Maybe I will now after this video. 👍🏾
I LOVE this series. Very well put together videos, love your work mate.
Omg crossed swords, my childhood was full of dirty jokes like this title
... don't forget 'docking' 🤣👍
Fantastic to see the Neo Geo series back Alec 😊 when your vid popped up in my sub feed I was hyped and NGH-037 didn’t disappoint. Thank you and look forward to the next instalment.
This is a really neat looking game! I'll have to check it out at some point.
I think I played this in the arcade once or twice? I may have to revisit it. was a pretty neat idea!
Thanks for another fantastic episode of Neo Geo Generation video and for the usual tips your videos provide (I own a Japanese system, so I usually find out a fair amount of stuff I haven't been able to figure out myself).
I didn't bother with Crossed Swords for ages, mostly due to the fact that I expected it to be similar to the Super Spy. My mistake, as I've really gotten into it recently (enough to snag myself a copy) and I keep getting sucked back into it. It's definitely an unusual and enjoyable game for the system. It's a shame the sequel is locked to the NGCD.
This a good one, I got it on AES CIB; glad I got it just before inflation. The price on it doubled.
Love this game
You know a modern, indy game in this style could be cool.
After I watched the video, I immediately looked for a Rom. I find out amonge other things that this was released on NS and PS4 as a downloadable game called ACA NEOGEO CROSSED SWORDS.
Hooray!
I always wondered if this and Magician Lord are set in the same world. There are many similarities, including Frog Men!
Crossed Swords does take place in the same universe as Magician Lord. The Crossed Swords manual explains that the land of Cadacis that Magician Lord takes place in became the kingdom of Belkana in Crossed Swords.
@@BasementBrothers Thanks for the conformation, I never saw the manual. I wonder if that info is on the ADK wiki?
I love shared universe law, especially pleased about this and when I found out about Irem's D.A.S games being linked. Last big one I want to confirm is if Data East's Dark Seal, Hippodrome & Death Brade are a linked universe?
While the soundtrack isn't super catchy or memorable I think it compliments well the dark atmosphere of the game.
I can't go play some Neo Geo, as mom says I have to clean my room first.
Alec the elusive.
I do not know why this game is compared to Punch Out so much. Because if anything, it has more in common with the arcade game "Dynamite Duke" from 1989, and The Punisher for NES.
I consider Dynamite Duke a gallery shooter like Nam 1975 though, and Crossed Swords isn't that. I agree, the Punch Out similarities end at the wireframe protagonist.
@@BasementBrothers Nam-1975 is more like Cabal, and it didn't have close-range combat like the two games I gave examples of or Crossed Swords.
You can actually level up to 11 in this game. You have to kill practically every single enemy in the game for that to happen, including those that can flee such as the bugs, frogs and rats. You might also have to take certain routes although it might be possible regardless, not sure. Even in a perfect run, you won't hit level 11 until the very room before the final boss. Doing that without save states is borderline impossible.
It's good to be back, eh, Alec?
... wink?
We had this game bootlegged (a Japanese version) on an arcade here in my hometown in Mexico. It was an amazing game, but we could never get very far because all the options were really confusing due to the language barrier.
are they twins?
Bro I need the cross swords 2 video I'm begging you 🙏
It's NGH-054, so it's 12 videos away.
Literally stumbled upon your channel today and have been binge watching the entire 98 paradise series your vids are seriously amazing!
I played this before and it is overly long and drags a bit. It's perfectly suited to playing in an emulator with save states, play for 30 minutes then come back to it another day.
I'm glad to see this series return! Easily the best Neo series on the web. Looking forward to future episodes.
Thanks!
