Totally, it’s probably the best Eagles song because it rocks and it’s got great melody and harmonies. The best of what they do and great lyrically too.
They were perfectionists. It shows all over but nobody talks about the live performance quality. It always meets or exceeds the studio quality. Other bands come out live and have a good time. You can recognize your favorite songs but when the Eagles do a song live you can hear every instrument, every single voice. Imagine just trying to get Don Henley's voice over the top of his drums. Yes, I know he has been caught lip syncing in later years but the Melbourne concert is real and sounds as good as the studio. I think those who don't like the Eagles do so because they are perfectionists.
If you travel in the way back machine, Randy Meisner sings lead on an incredible live performance from 1977 "Take It To The Limit'', generally regarded as the quintessential version of the song.

I always liked how Don Henley, primarily a drummer, at the Hell Freezes Over concert (1994), at about 5 minutes in, he stopped the orchestra while they were practicing and told the conductor that one of the strings was playing his part incorrectly. So, the conductor asked the guy to play a Cappella (i.e. alone, w/o other instruments or accompaniment), which he did, and Don was right. The guy was playing an incorrect note. Amazing, the group, and amazing is their incredible attention to detail.

@@breakdownlounge9541 I'd go with: From the At Fillmore East album, Whipping Post, Stormy Monday, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Trouble No More. Just a note, these are usually LONG versions and Whipping Post is 23 minutes long, but it's the best version. For a shorter version, see the last album mentioned (below). From the Eat A Peach album, One Way Out, Les Brers In A Minor, Melissa, Trouble No More, Blue Sky or Little Martha. From the Brothers and Sisters album, Ramblin' Man and Jessica. From the "The Allman Brothers Band" album, Whipping Post (the short version). There are videos of some of the live performances that are either synced to other versions or are just a little less "good" as the ones off the live albums I mentioned but, that are always good. I'm just steering you to "THE BEST".
I would suggest you go back in time a little more when Don Felder was with them. The guy doing the bulk of the lead guitar work is a fill-in because they fired Don Felder. He was a AWESOME guitarist and responsible for most of their killer lead guitar. He also provided a lot of vocals. Don't get me wrong, Joe Walsh did his share of lead guitar work too, AND even some lead and background vocals, but most of the really catchy, well-known (definitive Eagles) leads/licks were Don's. However, everything changed when they were recording Victim Of Love. Don Felder had originally recorded the lead vocals, but while he was away, they (Don Henley and Glen Frey) decided 2 things: 1), they wanted to change the way the money was split, with more going to them and less to everyone else, and 2) they decided they didn't like Don Felder's vocals. So, without even telling him about it, they erased the lead vocals that he already laid down for Victim Of Love, and rerecorded them with Don Henley doing the lead vocals. When Don Felder found out, he was rightfully upset, but when he questioned them about the money situation, they fired him. Anyway, I think you'd really like the guitarwork that Don Felder did. Here's a link to Eagles with Don Felder, doing Hotel California live (ua-cam.com/video/09839DpTctU/v-deo.html ). Here's a link from the same concert (1977) doing One Of These Nights (ua-cam.com/video/-d3dIgcSY30/v-deo.html ). I think it's even better than the one you saw here. They also have the original Randy Meisner on bass who did a lot of their higher register work. The vocals are better, more "present" and the lead is much sharper, like the studio version. Update: I brought you something special ... a link to them doing the studio version of I Can't Tell You Why (ua-cam.com/video/Odcn6qk94bs/v-deo.html ) ... a beautiful song with song sweet vocals and lead guitar work.
@@breakdownlounge9541 You are most welcome 😊👍!!! Always happy to help a guy out who's trying to learn and understand about these bands, and the info I provided is important to know. Incidentally, Don Felder also did the title track to the movie Heavy Metal, and was appropriately enough called, Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride). I was an animated film of nothing but Rock songs. Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/SYqEgFEkxek/v-deo.html . It was his only real solo hit, but get this ... backing vocals were provided by ... drum roll please ... Timothy B. Schmit, the bass player in this video who replaced the previously fired bass player, Randy Meisner and Don Henley, the one who fired Don Felder !!! It is one CRAZY 🤪world out there !!!
@@StevesFunhouse Randy Meisner was NOT fired. This brilliant talent left on his own, feeling he was being treated like a sideman in the band he co-founded. According to Don Felder's book, the easy-going Randy was being bullied by Henley and Frey. Randy played killer bass, sang like an angel, and wrote beautiful, heartfelt songs. The Eagles' loss and ours.
@@margaretross9150 True, but my points, both of them, while not technically correct in that 1 particular vein, was about Don Felder, NOT Randy Meisner. However, being bullied is pretty much the same ... you are forcing the guy out of the band, to the point he had to leave ... but no, technically, he wasn't fired.
Don Henley song/video? "Boys Of Summer". That and Dionne & Friends's "That's What Friends Are For" were top ranked songs of 1985! Don Henley's "You Belong To The City" will seduce you as well.

Recording technology was becoming so good and was allowing for all kinds of crazy new sounds and experimentation and with where we were culturally and creatively it was just the perfect combination of all factors, but the technology wasn't SO GOOD that you could fake it. You still had to be great at what you did and hence why the era produced the most good music we've ever had. You know they actually perform dirty laundry in that same concert... You should react to that it's amazing live
Moody Blues....Blackfoot.....38 Special
They were Linda Ronstandt 's back up band.
Please do EAGLES "Take it to the Limit" LIVE from 1977 Capital Center
Eagles best evah......
Need to listen to the Allman Brothers Band!! Some of the most talented musicians of the times
Aw man that would be a perfect group to listen to some live performances of. If you've got recommendations (or links) please do share.
Doobie brothers also
@@breakdownlounge9541 I'd go with:
From the At Fillmore East album, Whipping Post, Stormy Monday, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Trouble No More.
@@StevesFunhouse Awesome thank you
I would suggest you go back in time a little more when Don Felder was with them.
Wow thank you for this lengthy comment. I appreciate it and will keep this in mind going forward with the Eagles.
Anyone know where I can find this particular concert …….it used to be full on UA-cam ??
Don Henley song/video?
"Boys Of Summer".
That and Dionne & Friends's "That's What Friends Are For" were top ranked songs of 1985!
Don Henley's "You Belong To The City" will seduce you as well.
they are great live, but you have to listen to the recording to appreciate the clarity of the sound. The 8 track or cd was recorded in the 1970s, right ?
Eagles "Take it to the Limit" 1977 live tour. Or
Hotel California from same live tour 1977 so that you can witness the BEST GUITAR duet of all Time...
Doobie Brothers "What a Fool Believes"
Journey " open Arms" or " Faithfully"
FOREIGNER "Juke box Hero" or "Cold as Ice"
Hall and Oates
Credence Clearwater
Where is this performance on the internet? I can't find it anywhere...
This was done when they were a bit older.
True fact, this is what President Obama said when he awarded the eagles their medals. His exact words were,", the eagles sold more records albums then any other musician in the 20th century, and that's quite an accomplishment considering all the great musicians in the 20th century". That's a fact
Dude you should check out The Night owls by Australian group the Little River Band, another band where all members are superb musicians harmonisers and singers, the official video if you can it's live
Listen to America, Boston, Crosby Stills and Nash, Kansas , Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Moody Blues, the Doors, Steely Dan, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, Procul Harum
The Beatles, Zeppelin, and the Eagles! Led Zeppelin are the GOATS! Do them live! That’s an old Eagles concert!
🎶💜🎶
Boston
Journey, live (with Steve Perry) performances sound better than the records.
So many great albums.
1981 Houston live concert video stone in Love, troubled child, wanted dead or alive. All in this concert.
You will enjoy Journey and their harmonies and then STEVE PERRY vocals are out of this world
Trapeze, midnight flyer
If you’re serious about classic rock start with bands like the Spencer Davis Group / Blind Faith / Free / Three Dog night/ Grand Funk Railroad just to name a few essentials
Another one at Don Henley songs did I like a lot is "in a New York minute". Maybe you might want to react to that one
The original 70's live concert videos are on here, can you imagine being there, then.
Anyone under the age of 40, you've only ever been brought up on dross 😞.
The 60's (before my time) was the decade
Would have been great to experience both decades me thinks
@@breakdownlounge9541
In so many ways. You learnt & mastered your chosen instrument. Natural talent. 60's was the best, 70's still great. 80's took a new turn with the synth... It all started to go wrong with the manufactured crap & boy bands circa 1988...
@@philtheecow3404 That echoes what I've always told people. And like you said, a few years later the tech started getting good enough that people could chop and cut and...really not have to be as skilled as their peers where just a decade or two prior. People just started phoning it in and letting computers do the leg work, producing really generic and boring sounds without human soul. It wasn't all trash, but to me, it always felt like such a departure from 60 and 70's.
and the Doors....try ' Peace Frog'
Journey!! Steve Perry.
Ice reaction, brother.
